Here's my 'The Journey Begins' CGChallenge entry- the mood I was going for was one of the emigrants just setting out to a new land, being forced from their country possibly because of poverty or misfortune. They are boarding a ship- but they're not sure how it will go- they may die on the way, they might find out that their 'promised land' is not all it seems....

Why was this moved? It's finished! This is the entry I put in.

Hmmm... I think it's a bit strange to move this Theresa. Seems a bit bizarre... However, wonderful expression on the characters faces. Your colour choices are fab, and the clouds are great! I won't critique it, because you didn't put it in this section, and I had my chance on t'uther site, but good luck with this!

My finished piece got moved as well, without any explanation or answer to my PM queries.

I like the renaissance quality of this :)

The brushwork and subtleties in the colors are great. However I think this was moved because there are still a few things that seem off to it. There seams to be a sparse muddiness with your brushwork that appears on the cliff and other background elements. Also, the figures ascending the stairs are very blurry and even appear transparrent. I'm not sure who moved this but either way, you shouldn't take this to be in anyway insulting. This entire forum is dedicated to technical development and the finished section exists as a showcase for work that's been refined to a state of completion. Sometimes that means that general skill need to be developed more and in other cases, such as this, there are stand-out issues in an individual piece that should be addressed before being called finished. Either way, you definitely exhibit skill here and I have no doubt that you can push it even further.

Posh: Hey, nice seeing another cgtalker here! I'm not hoping to win or anything, but I've put a fair bit of work into this piece and I don't really want to work on it anymore. :D I'm sure you know what I mean! Thanks for your nice comments though!
LM: Yes, it's rather bewildering isn't it? You work on something, you feel it's done and put it in the finished section, then someone moves it without saying why and it's sort of hurtful. Yes, I know I'm not as good as some of the people here, but it just seems a little too elitist for my taste. I felt this was finished, and, well...I won't talk about it anymore. Exo: Thanks for your clear explanation as to why you feel it was moved. I'm learning how to remove contrast in the distance and I guess that's why it's a bit sparse/muddy in the background- what I'm doing is obviously not working. The figures were meant to sort of change into ghostlike forms as they went up...it's very hard to do crowds of ghosts in the distance!

I guess I do need to work on my general skills more though. Oh well. Back I go to the drawing board....thanks for saying i have skills, it's encouraging. :)

Hey Paperclip, I got bumped out of the finished forum as well! I thought I had a finished piece then got the boot. I know what you mean about not working on your piece anymore. I turned in my piece (Colonization Of Mars) three days in advance to the deadline, I was going back in forth, am I finished or unfinished? Now that the challenge is done; I’m like getting more ideas for the piece that I submitted! I liked your piece; I think there is a lot of imagination there. From one cgtalker to another “rock on bro!”

Exo gave a nice crit, but let me add a couple things about the ship. For one, it has this dark glow about it. That's detracting from the believability. There also doesn't seem to be a very consistant light source. The shadow on the bottom of the hull is indicating a very strong light, but nothing else is. I'd also have to say the hull is oddly shaped.

From a functional standpoint, you have quite a few sails set forward and the seem to be at full draw (bluged out). That doesn't make a lot of sense for a docked ship.

It's a fairly nice piece, but with the sky oddities and the composition scrunching the eye into the lower left corner, there are things that could be better.
