My first sketchbook start today.
They are very simple drawings: I am learning. :p
I've done these sketches a few weeks ago...

"The kid" was a poster i had found in a cinema. I was there to see The Lord of the Rings. ;)
But these are some pics i've done watching TV...

It's difficult to me to draw the human figure proportion, so i've done some sketches using my jointed manikin
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/sketches/cashmere-0001sketch.jpg
and i've continued with the head studies
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/sketches/cashmere-0002sketch.jpg
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/sketches/cashmere-0003sketch.jpg
The jointed manikin is very useful: a day I decided to draw a dog I had seen in a photo.
It was terribly difficult to me to find the right perspective: the dog and his "best friend" always was in conflict with me...so I decided to use the manikin.
In this pic you may see the "underground" ovals that helped me to catch that stupid dog.
( two days of useless tests before finish this sketch :p )

That is one of the hardest things to learn Cashmere...to think of things in terms of structure. You know what I am doing that is really helping...Learn to draw simple shapes in perspective first...like draw a square in perspective using guidelines and then try to draw it without guidelines and see how close you were...etc... When you can draw these simple shapes correctly then you can draw a more complex figure...like a dog....more easily. Great work man keep it up!

MindCandyMan - You are right. To think of things in terms of structure often has helped me (look at pic here above).
I think I'll drawing more simple shapes. This exercise is useful also to improve the use of the light and shade.

I would try to do some cubes and cylinders in perspective now. Read through this section and it should really help...this will help you to start thinking more in 3d...try it out and definitely post the results...read through both one and two point perspective.

One thing you want to keep in mind when doing these perspective pieces cashmere is that you want to keep the vanishing points far away from each other or you will start to get a fish eye looking type of shape. It's more natural for shapes to have vanishing points that go off of the paper. Keep it up bud you are doing great!

June 7th, 2003, 09:40 PM
That car is pretty cool, the touch with teh seats is really nice.
I feel like I should see the last tire though. It looks like you drew the rear wheel on one perspective guide line (is there a technical term for them, or am I just gonna make stuff up ? ) and then the rear tire on the other side should fall along it too.
I don't know how you can put the vanishing points off the page and still draw so accurately! :)

sic1- you is right, I've wrong to calculate the right perspective of the tyres. It was difficult to me becouse I had drawn the car by a 2D reference, not from life.
How I can put the vanishing points off the page? Try to put another sheet of paper near the original and use them as a big page. ;)

Today I've read the Fun with a Pencil by Andrew Loomis (http://www.saveloomis.org/)
It's too fun to draw strange faces using circles and spheres
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/sketches/cashmere-0007sketch.jpg
A few days ago I utilized the same technique for Disney's Mickey Mouse
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/topolino1.jpg
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/topolino2.jpg
If you like Disney's works or you like cartoons or animations, I advice this fundamental book: Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/5550441357/qid=1055535024/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/103-1546625-2506218?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)
...it is the Bible of animation. Some citations... (http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/context/72404/0)
sic1
June 15th, 2003, 05:42 PM
Cashmere, I like the loomis heads with different shapes, and Mickey turned out well also. I like how when you draw a head (mickey in this case) you do a flyaround of sorts -- where you draw each side of it. I think that really helps to understand it in threed!
Keep them coming!

sic1, I didn' know Loomis could be so funny :p
Textures and patterns are a bit boring to draw. I have just completed this strange work...
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/sketches/cashmere-0009sketch.jpg
Textures are helpful like the basic objects (cubes, spheres..)
This drawing is a copy of a Paolo Parente's cover from a french GDR like Magic.
This humanoid-wolf is full of textures that give the character a solid aspect.

those eyes are really good...especially the last one. i also somehow like the drawing style you used there.
what kind of pen did you use to do that?
micky's head is also very neat - i dig that turnaround-animation-like progression you did there :)

Thanks MindCandyMan you are inspiring me!.
Kortez, thanks for the comment, I would like to see your progress when you will start the new class, so keep us updated ;)
Golgari, thanks. For the eyes I've used exactly a black "Pilot BP-S MATIC FINE"...well it's a normal ball-point pen but it is versatile like a pencil. I like it.
Keys to Drawing, a Bert Dodson's book. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0891343377/qid=1056659615/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-6945758-7882312?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)
In this book I found an exercise: to copy a b/w photo applying the right tones and light and shade.
So I copied that photo using a "trick": drawing a shape is more simple then drawing a face.
(2B pencil)
1) I turned the photo by 180 degree
2) I found four great shapes
3) I signed, on the central shape, the central point and some references, distances and proportions.
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/cashmere-0001port.jpg
4) Then I started to draw the central shape putting the eyebrow, the eye's line and the mouth's form, adding also the left black shape (the hair)
5) I turned the photo and my drawing to the right position and I finished the tones shading the pencil's strokes.
6) Background.

Ok, it seems finished...

that looks indeed good...yeah, that turnaround-for-not-recognizing-it's-parts-anymore-method often works very well when copying stuff. maybe i would have paid a little more attention to the textural side of the drawing, though. the middle of the picture is very smooth, but the corners are structured with hard crosshatches...which looks a little odd together.

Jester, yes I found that method in Betty Edwards book. It's a boring method but fun.
Kortez, try that method to sketch your subject, then reverse the picture and work normally.
Golgari, you are right, the corners are structured with hard crosshatches.
I used a 2HB pencil, it was very hard and I did't reach to darken the corner with soft strokes...so...
Buffaloe, thanks, Loomis book is very fun :)

that horse of the rider in the middle is very strange, though. i can't figure out at all what's the head supposed to look like.

MindCandyMan, I am late with the updates, I must draw more...and best.
I like Rembrandt too, his pictures are full of power.
Have a nice trip to Texas :)
Golgari, the Rembrandt copy look hasty because I tried to reproduce the quick movement of the strokes and probably that (the original) was only a sketch.
Maybe yes or maybe not but, in my opinion, Walt Disney was a genius.

Golgari, I tried to apply the ideas I found in a Disney's Book ("The illusion of Life". The autors are Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, two of Disney's famous Nine Old Men).
Mickey's head is a sort of ball and the body is like a pear. Stretching and squashing these simple shapes allow me to move objects and characters.
Like this:
http://digilander.libero.it/tuttobianco/sketches/mickey7.jpg
Here is a half-filled flour sack: with simple shapes it's possible to achieve any sort of attitudes.

That Hogarth-Hand is really great!
Your own hands are not bad, too, only they fall a little short beneath that hogarth-drawing ;)
maybe try shading them with more contrast - this is a great part of the depth that is created in hogarth' drawing, i'm sure it would work well in your own, too. also, there are some minor flaws like for example the thumb on the last hand, which seems to be to broad or the index finger and the little finger on the second hand (foreshortening problem/too thin?)
for 30 seconds, those puppet sketches look good.
i like especially the way you used the line on the head of the last puppet...

Another sketchbook which is showng tremendous progress! This entire last page of the thread is filled with awesome work! I think my favorite is the kitten, just because it has always been really hard for me to draw something like that in a realistic way.. You've captured it perfectly! I like that it has a nice range of values to it. Nice work! And the Giotto Tower s maginficent.... Great work!
