I've recently read the 4 available books of A Song Of Ice and Fire series (which are badass btw, blankslatejoe got me hooked), and here's an attempted depiction of Daenerys with Drogon, one of her 3 dragons. If you are familiar with the books, i painted this to represent them late in the next book, age-wise.
I usually have trouble thinking of what to paint, but these books give plenty of ideas. Any critiques welcome. I'm particularly terrible with backgrounds.

Nicely done, I've gotta give you props on the subject matter, George R.R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series are my favorite fantasy books. The medium is handled well, and the color palette looks pretty good, but could be more interesting I think. Also, I know you mentioned being bad at backgrounds but, I think you could do more with it. For me, I always found the sections in (I think the 3rd book....) which describe Daenerys and her dragons hunting while on that ship an interesting image, or perhaps when she acquires the slave army of the Unsullied and the ensuing massacre in the city square. I dunno, just ideas, anyway good work.

I can tell you haven't spent time on the background....but the dragon and the girl look great!

hm...isn't Dany 15 in the next book? Your girl looks along the lines of twenty-something...-__o

lovely rendering on her anyway, but I agree about the background....if not with some kinda environment, you coulda tried filling it up with the other two dragons, or perhaps give the black dragon a bit more room. He's sorta crouchin' down outta sight there, when he could be fillin' up the emptiness nicely.

I like it, but the background is a little boring. It's nothing wrong with the colors, everything works good colorwise, but it feels like it would have been a little more interesting if you did something more with the background.

Im not familiar with such concept but I love the skincolours, however dont much like her broad face she reminds me of that one actress whos appearance I dont like I actually made caricature of hers but my memory is playing games with me again, OPA! there it came: its Gwyneth Paltrow, no wonder I had probelms remembering the name, thats a difficult name !!!!!

Yeah, I agree with the "15 year old" comment. It's okay if you make a hot 15 year old. Middleton draws hot 12 year olds and we still love him for it. Secondly, aside from the background, you might try doing something more interesting with the characters. I was also considering illustrating her, but with her 3 babies. Some sort of interaction between her and the dragon(s), ya know? Rather than them just standing in some abstract mist. Also, pay attention to the costumes Martin gives her, they're more interesting than just a toga-esque outfit. For instance the topless one with the open silk robe and baggy belly dancer pants in that marble palace with the merchant dude. Just push the idea more. There are looooads of great scenes in those books. Do your best to do them justice. You're headed in the right direction in any case. Keep it up! Peeeeeace!!

very nice, but the backgroung isn't up to the rest of the pic.Actually i would have chosen another moment in the story, i just loved here story while she was Khal Drogos wife. But she was even better even "later", with lionskin to keep her warm in the Dothkati's sea of grass, her yougn draons resting on her body, riding a horse as the queen of her people.Grat series of books BTW, here in italy i'm still waiting for a "FEast of crows"...doh!

i quite like those curvy hips too...:D

Thanks for the replies!

I'll definately work on it some more. I tried a few different backgrounds but they sucked. One had her other 2 dragons flying around in a deserty area, I think I'll revisit it. She's already regrown her hair quite a bit by the time the next book takes place, and i figured she would be around 17 in the next one, altho i may be wrong. It's definately challenging to make her look that young in the face. I decided not to bother making her body look that young since she's already gone through a pregnancy and martin makes every character seem older than they are. I'll have to re-read some of the books to get an idea of what she wears, i just kinda made her outfit up on the fly.

Again, thanks all and I'll get back on it tonight, hopefully!

great to see some asoiaf stuff up.

I never pictured her as a blonde, and I always pictured her much younger. I think one of the great things about the character is that through her experiences she becomes wise beyond her years.

Have you seen the art book for the series? There's a painting of Jaime on the iron throne is just incredible.

I too did an image with her years ago, when i was just beginning to draw: it is so ugly I don't even have the courage to show it to anyone!:teeth:

I like your image, totally better than mine, what troubles me a little is the fact that the dragon looks somewhat pasted, like a flat image.
beside this, i still like it ;)

Easy_tiger: Dany is supposed to have silver-blond hair and purple eyes, so hes spot on.

nice, i like her figure and expresion... i dont think she looks too old, though id liked to have seen a bg and more detailing on Drogon.

i frikkin love those books, need to get a hold of the latest one. took forever to come out!

Can me the opinion of the others only attached... your work it pleases me. :) The girl and the dragon look excellent, but the background is a little too plain and simple.

Cheers

Excellent man... I love the series, just finished Feast a couple of months back, and Daenerys is one of my faviorite characters.

I will jump in to and say bg is very lacking. The only other negative that I see is that she is very hot, but her hair is definitely not. Paris would throw a tantrum if she was caught in public with this hair : )
