Ok more sketches, this samurai idea I had with ninjas and junk, epic battles etc.. did a bunch of sketches on some paper lying around one day, I'm not sure what some of the panels on the pages are though, oh well, c'est la vie and all that, here's some and a couple that I played with. I guess this would be roughly 38 comic/graphic novel pages. enjoi

maybe one day i'll do a break down of what's going on in each page/panel and maybe that'll help me to remember what I drew storywise. ok cool, late.

Some good stuff here man, i like the penciled pages and stuff.. the action seems nice in a lot of them..
But whats apparent is u really are loosing lots of quality of your linework when u photoshop in it..
Try not to single out pencil lines into the thick black photosop lines.. it really kills it. Try just working with low opacity brushes to paint ontop, and maybe redrawing line, paint dont fill unless u clean up the lines and work vector. Id try to avoid using gradients aswell.. unless your vectorising them.
Id like to see more of the small pencil stuff, like this (http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/elvessketch.jpg).
Its good stuff.

Kee posting :)
Andy.

I enjoy the pencil work you are doing but it seems to loose feeling when you go to color. Follow phatandys advice and slow down on the coloring process. I wouls also suggest drawing from reference to improve your skills even more. Good work! (and thanks for stopping by my s.b.)

i really like the energy in all of these but i think that you are missing some fundementals that are really holding you back.
take a step back from stylization and start from square one. draw a sphere and shade it. include reflected light and correct gradation of shadow and light. do some work with line shape and form. you have the drive obviously by the amount of work you have shown.
now think about how you can improve.
all of the best stylized artists have a firm grasp of line shape and form. they can distort the human face and body because they understand how it is supposed to look and how to draw it without stylization

roidvoid
August 28th, 2007, 08:06 PM
oh and dont worry about photoshop for awhile. its keeping you from learning the basics of drawing.
get good at drawing then move into the basics of photoshop. then you can get really good at photoshop

then youll have all of us giving you five stars on your sketchbook!

and i'm kind of undecided on the monster monster look, I like his cowl, and the M monster logo with the arm sleeves, but boots and gloves are just too plain, i kind of don't like the thumb/wrist brace thing, but it's different, and foot wraps are just enf, I was thinking of just going black arms and legs but that might be too dark, also wasn't sure wether the lower jaw was too much on the chest piece... was thinkig the utility belt went with the boots and gloves kind of like a military/spec ops monster squad thing... I guess.. more later, I've got some more with like a monster gizmo radar and stuff... hmm ok i'm tired, later...

here's another monster monster page sketch I did, the big ink mark on the second panel just ignore. I kind of got tired of this cause I didn't like how it was turning out and it felt kind of forced so I just gave up and came back on occasion to add some penils here and there, but I ran out of pages in my sketchbook so I came back and inked it in a little to see if i could save it any. Here's what I ended up with about an hour of coloring in photoshop. It's kind of enh. Monster Monster vs Giant Dracula, in a village.

Heyo, smrtbob!

I looked all through your sketchbook and WOW!! You have so much stuff you've worked on! I commend you for that! :D Envy you even. :3 Hee hee!

I'd be repeating what others have said about your colouring and using refs and whatnot, so I just agree with them. Take your time practicing on those areas. It's never bad to have fun with the drawings! I hope to see you working on the basics too, though! :)

I did see improvement in your colouring lately, so keep it up. There are some awesome Photoshop tutorials on colouring too, if you find yourself at a loss!

Keep it up! ^_^

yeah I need to work on still lifes and drawing from reference more often, also i need to find my other pencils and stuff to work with. Usually I just sketch things and have fun, drawing from my head or just making marks instead of having a complete idea to go with.
and I occasionally go through the tutorials but I'm working with PS elements 5 or older I believe, so I'm a bit limited, but I make do.
I went through some of your sketchbook but not all of it, I'll have to check out the rest later.
thanks again

Hey, I love you style, and your coloring certainly has improved since the very first image you posted. The shading is very nicely done.

I just have one question. What do you use to color? It looks like markers, but I'm not entirely sure.

smrtbob
March 11th, 2008, 01:56 AM
hey thanks Gundamx67,
When I do color on the paper(the last spiderman sketches, the red on the monster monster, most of the first monster monster, and a few assorted other things) I mostly use copic markers(mostly the oval ones, I have a few of the squares, I just prefer the felt tip), but I also have a few Chartpak and Prismacolor markers(these have really well designed tips), but the later 2 bleed really heavy so you have to be careful, and one or both contain xylene(or an equivelent) which is used in photo transfer pens(you bleed the ink from a xerox onto another sheet of paper basically) and smell pretty heavy(my wife's pregnant and her mommy senses increased her sense of smell, so it's kind of noxious to her, same with the sharpies). Oh yeah, I keep an extra sheet of paper under my page cause of bleed, but that doesn't always help and cause of the transfer stuff sometimes my bleed page marks get sucked through.
For inking I just use assorted sharpies(fine, ultra, extra, chisel, super). A staedler pigment liner .3, a micron for my little lines 000 I think, techniclick 2 mechanical pencil .5, and a lead holder with probably the lightest lead I have... I have a bunch of different ones and blue ones, but I can never find them... buried under old art supplies and crayons.
all the rest of the coloring I do in photoshop elements 5 or something and I have a wacom tablet, graphire 3 the 4x6 I think.
probably more than you wanted but there you go, i was thinking of adding pics, but maybe later as I'm tired and lazy

added some stuff I'd fix/ change/ add to the 2nd monster monster page

Hehehe - dude your stuff is cool! that lil cartoon superhero jumpin off the roof with big open mouth made me laugh out loud XD .. he's totally like 'ya-daaaa check me out!' please learn photoshop asap as you're killing most of your art when used on it - but having said that, the pure energy and cheerfulness with which you attack stuff almost makes it ok (almost ;P) one big tip that may help is set your lineart layer to multiply and colour underneath and stay away from soft blurry brushes for now - just fill areas.

One thing that confuses me is your random swinging from total awesomeness to sketchy cringe and back to total awesomeness again! (edit: sorry not meant as an insult - you must just be posting everything - keep it up!)

And is it possible to draw too much spidey? ;)

anyways gotta go - keep rockin on dude - subscribed!

heh thanks The7Artist7

yeah, I mostly post the better stuff from my sketchbook, sometimes random junk, or if anything's process related... and yeah my ability jumps as I draw. so sometimes I can keep good consistency for a few weeks, then I crap out or I take a break and my style changes a little. So I spend a lot of time just doing random sketch stuff and seeing where that takes me.

And yes, I still need to spend more time in photoshop, but I only have an old version of elements so I kind of just play with it, and nothing here is really meant to be a finished product(cept the stuff I've made into products, but I update those too on occasion)

I also keep a little lined notebook, I go through one of those every few months, and a few pages made it in awhile ago. I've got some good stuff in there mixed with a bunch of idea sketches and other crap. I was halfway done scanning in the better stuff, but I still got 5 more books to go and then some.

I Just got a new computer and need to hunt down my old PS Elements cd, I'll scan more stuff in soon. Been awhile since I updated. Maybe I'll dig up my old high school sketchbooks as a comparison.

smrtbob
July 14th, 2008, 05:23 PM
ok so I found my old elements 2.0 cd that came with my wacom pad, and today i went to scan stuff, and the drivers didn't load. new vista 64 and a 7+ year old Umax scanner which was never that great to begin with. Having trouble getting the drivers for vista, and it looks long and complex, Would xp drivers work? probably not huh? oh well so I ended up taking a couple of pics.

I saw 7artist7 had a link to a spidey challenge, and I checked it out like 30 minutes before it was over, but since I was up anyway I decided to just doodle something out. did some real loose pencil, then just went over it with a bic pen. Spidey vs green goblin over the streets during a parade. You got a Spidey balloon and a garfield, and I guess barney would be back there too. Band members, balloon wranglers, crowds, etc. You can see that I rushed in a lot of it, and there's a bunch I'd like to change/ finish, but this was meant more as a sketch.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/spideyblimp2.jpg

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/spideyblimppage2.jpg

and I don't know, added a stupid joke, with no response, even though goblin's laughing(i figure it's a laugh track like jack nicholson's joker at the end)

The7Artist7
July 15th, 2008, 08:51 AM
Hey dude - I think the pic was really cool - just didn't get the joke at all - ...'man, do I look like a blimp? (struggling to grasp the reasoning behind it already lol!) then ...'nothing? too obvious?' (what the.. huh? now I'm really confused!)

Sorry man - maybe my humor understanding chip needs an update!

keep up the cool stuff - see ya at the next challenge! (there's a hulk one going down at the moment if your interested? http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=131168 )

smrtbob
July 15th, 2008, 02:30 PM
yeah, it wasn't really funny. Spider-man looking at the blimp of himself saying he looks like a blimp(the blimp's all fat). And then saying Nothing? as in no response, and was the joke too obvious(apparently not)
heh heh, yeah lame...
and I looked at the hulk challenge, maybe I'll give it a shot
I don't know all I can think up at the moment is Hulk vs Alcoholism(not really a superhero) Hulk Smashed!! and Hulk vs Gestault Decepticon Devastator to see who the strongest really is.

debating to go back and grab an epson printer/scanner that had cables, the manual, and disc, only thing is that it's sitting by the dumpsters...

smrtbob
July 21st, 2008, 05:35 PM
so I ended up doing a bunch of hulk vs sketches, and a few sketches since I've never drawn the hulk- but I'll have to scan that all when I get a compatible scanner. Until then you get what I crammed out in under an hour. Totally sucks, I even skewed it a bit to make it look better. Oh wells, I had a Hulk vs Carnage(not a hero though) where he was ripping carnage in half kind of like the Sentry did, but more down the middle in half. But for the quick one I went with Hulk Vs. Angel(of the xmen) where he would be shadowed except his glowing eyes and blood coming out of his mouth and around his hand, which held angel- headless(hulk bit it off like ozzy would) and broken bloody wings with limp hands... obviously I took the crap route and just mashed this out, I should've done a better position like my sketches and maybe added a little of light to the edges, as well as redrawing it, learning photoshop, etc...
>:{ >:| :xpld:
so here it is... crapola

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/hulk.jpg

and the one I posted

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/hulk2.jpg

I'll have to try/try harder in the future

man that blood really looks like crap... I really did an eighth-assed job

.................................................. .................................

(edit) : I figured I'd edit this in instead of making another post

I got bored the other day and broke out my tablet to get used to it again, and I colored in my spidey challenge sketch a little just to see if that helped.

still having scanner issues, so I took some pictures and cropped it... I was doing some sketching for the spider challenge 2 w/black cat, again a character I've never drawn. Same as MJ, so I gave her a shot too. I like how the MJ's came out, and some of the Black Cat sketches, I wish I could've scanned it. Oh well, maybe I'll work on finishing one of them for the challenge or just turn in something that's meh.

ha ha, so i took the half assed approach and just photoshopped one of the pictures. Could be a bit better, and I noticed a few spots I meant to color better(almost looks like you can see black cat's nipple cause of it, that's supposed to be her suit) and maybe spidey should be have anime sweat drops in the air or something, and maybe more little hearts? or lots of "mine!" 's

anywho here's my Spidey-challenge 2 w/ black cat entry...

So I finally got a new used new scanner, it's a lot faster than my old one, but the software I'm still getting, seems to run better through my old elements, and there's a few different options, some of the quality is meh, but I'm still adjusting.

Was going to scan most of my sketchbook in, but I decided to try a few pages to check out the scanner, so here's what you get from a few months ago.

Anywho here's a spiderman sketch that didn't scan so great so i had to do a bit of tweaking. Something about pencils and pens pissing it off with the contrast. And yes, that's spider-man pooting on juggernaut's head.

Then a couple of monster monster stuff I did and colored in to figure out what kind of style I wanted to go with. Pencil, pens, sharpie, marker.

some stuff for now, still trying to figure out my new scanner and software. pencils still aren't showing too well.

here's a daredevil page I did around the spidey contest.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/daredevil.jpg

drew this a week or so ago, the Rampaging Rhino, travels the earth with his rucksack, chest plate armor, and cans of spray on concrete to fix his hide.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/spideyrhino90.jpg

carnage and other spidey stuff I did a few months ago before the hulk vs. competition. some spider-hulk, scarlet spider, and would his impact webbing balls go *thwhop*?

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/carnagepage72.jpg

For some reason i had this weird image of joker in robin's costume, rather disturbing. Did a little sketch so I wouldn't forget, never got back to doing it. I figured he's have long skinny legs, maybe like an old man? manbat, two-face, golden age catwoman, and batman and robin

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/batman100.jpg

I was watching venture brothers when I did this, so there's a lot of inspired looks. When they open the Jonas Venture Museum on Skull Island I think.

ok here's some.

Wolverine sketches, did them in pencil, went over in BIC pen, meh.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/wolverinesketch90.jpg

For the Thor Challenge, I came up with a few idea, Thor vs. a bong, vs various Thors, vs the ocean, vs Hulk, vs Sutar, and vs a bunch of Giants(which would've been cool and in a different style, but too much work, you know how lazy I am.) So I went with a Venture bros. inspired Thor theme. I couldn't decide if Loki should be Dr. Venture or Monarch(since they're both kind of evil), this was the first sketch I did, Thor was gonna be next to him about to smash him with his hammer.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/lokiventure.jpg

The bulk of the sketches, I really should've look at this, or used it as reference, that or my puter, but the baby kept screaming at me.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/venturethor.jpg

This was what I was gonna do originally(well what I did, but more in a venture style) I put thor helm on Brock Samson, and I was gonna have the words on the hammer, and Loki's helmet twisting about. I think it's Brock punching some Plug-headed guy. Cut and paste baby.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/thordemo2.png

What I'm up to so far, did a quick sketch without looking at anything, so it looks like poo, colored it in with copics for the hell of it, a little photoshop here and there. Meh. Brock "THOR" Samson vs. The "Loki" Monarch.

I wanted to do it as a moving GIF with the rain seeming to fall, and maybe like lightning flashes.

whoops been awhile, meant to post stuff, even for the superhero challenges but I never did.. so here's some of the stuff.

some monster monster sketches I did the other night, mostly I like the lower right corner one, playing with costume still.
http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/monstermonsteridea90.jpg

one of a couple of pages of captain america sketches
http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/capam90.jpg

My initial sketch/drawing for the Avengers vs. Challenge, like this the best of what I drew, some of my undraw ideas were better though(plus included the whole VS aspect of the challenge)
http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/avengers190.jpg

Was even thinking of doing multiple pages, and adding them together like a poster, feature most of the avengers...
http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/avengers290.jpg

The only Avengers VS sketch that fell into the VS category I actually tried to work on. Vs. the X-men. I was gonna reverse nightcrawler(so he's using cap's shield to block iron man's blast) and use PS for the energy effects/blasts
http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/avengerxmen90.jpg

Wolverine Dynamic Challenge Sketches-
wolverine healing a bullet out of his head, sniktsnikt pop the claws, weapon x fierce jab, short wolverine's upper jab to the face/throat, ripping something apart berserker style, fastball special(probably gonna do this one, crouching in shadows/shadowed, being held back and screaming while someone near him gets shot, running/leaping, kneeling in a circle of cars with headlights beamed on him, hack slash slice
http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/images/dynamicwolverine90.jpg

Guess that'll have to do for now, hopefully more sooner than later.

need to shrink some sketches before i post them...

15 minute sketch of scarlet spider vs venom, based on an amazing spider-man cover by todd mcfarlane. slapped 15 minutes of quick color on it.
it turned out okay, the colors and shapes are weird, and it needs some foreshortening. Also todd draws weird clawy hands, and I think fists would come across better for Kaine "Scarlet Spider" Parker anyway.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/sketch/img_1145.jpg

demon ninja battle panel idea, with notes and junk.

http://www.eatmonkeygood.com/sketch/img_1389.jpg

is that terribly hard to follow? I was thinking about cutting up and rearranging things, or zooming in on certain sections.

the ninja in the home-made looking costume is pulling some throwing spikes and chunks them into the armored ninja just as he slashes him.
I was trying to get the zoom of the spikes digging into 'something,' and I guess maybe move the slash so it's more noticable that he cut the guy across the chest before being spiked.
rather than making it appear he dropped his sword cause of the spikes, and then is about to cut him with his left sword and all we hear is the slice and left wondering.
