View Full Version : Wolf painting, and animation cels

Yeah..I'm back with some other stuff. First off, a watercolor painting of two mated wolves. Scanned horribly, so my boyfriend was kind enough to use his digital camera to photograph it. This painting is 15x20, and took about 3 weeks to paint. It's tube watercolors, with salt in certain areas, to achieve a 'grainy' look.

And now, while I love realism, I also enjoy animation, and have gotten my hands on some cel paints and acetate from my art teacher, so I went nuts with it ;)
One of the first cels I did. From left to right, Star, Greg, Edan. BG's eh..cruddy..but it was a rush job. The cel was layered over the BG, wich was painted on illustration board. I ended up matting this one and sending it in with my AP Art Portfolio.

Silly animation cel I did for my boyfriend on Sunday. His character, Hasky. The BG is a laser print of an old BG I had laying around, for use in another project. I did this one in under 2 hours.

Inks for a cel I'm working on right now. Igal (left) and Edan (right) Igal is confronting Edan about something, though Edan seems more interested in his pizza, and the cute chick that walked by offscreen. Heh.

if you wish to see more of my work, I have galleries here:

Cool stuff!
Those cels look like they are a single frame of an animation (so you succeeded there).

Hey Starfinder
I must say that I like your first image very much. It seems that you can render hair very well without using Photoshop wich makes it easier for you. Very well done, nothing to comment on this one.
The cell shadings are a different story. They are a stab in my chest. I truly hope that you will think this as a fun thing to do for a week or something and will then realize that this sort of thing is more for kiddies. C’mon, cell shading!!!!!! Do you wan’t to ruin your style or something?? Cel shading is nice for tv and stuff but your true abilities are in the realism part which you have shown us in your previous thread. Please continue with that and look upon cel shading as a new thing and then go on with other stuff. Like anime, these drawings can ruin your emense prowess and skills.
Look, those drawings look nice, but they make you seem far less skilled. Don’t become one of those Disney nerds wich can’t draw serious like hell. There story’s are very nice and so on, but there drawings…… don’t get me started. You have surpassed there skills already in my opinion so please stop doing this and carry on with your realistic drawings. They carry in my opinion even more personality with them. Those eyes, those expressions in your realistic images are ten times bether than a cell shaded image. Believe me.
I know that you maybe don’t give a f what I am saying right know, but you have to trust me. Just keep it as a practise, as something you have done before, and then carry on to your realistic thingies. I don’t want to discuss these things with anybody, just send pm’s or something, because I feel like I fucked up Starfinders last thread, I don’t wan’t to let this happen anymore. I just express my opinion, if you don’t agree then I respect that. BUT I WILL NOT DISCUSS THIS IN THIS THREAD!!!!!!!
To you Christina I can only say,
Keep on going girl, your star already shines brightly, but don’t let it become a supernova. They are easily forgotten

Somehow the problem with starfinder's threads are, that people just don't read, what she writes (as it happened in her first thread with the 6-12 hours story).
Here a quote from her (and look at the colored part...this is the important one!):
"And now, while I love realism, I also enjoy animation, and have gotten my hands on some cel paints and acetate from my art teacher, so I went nuts with it "

stop discussing, the images are nice! The characters are cool, w/ or w/o shadows.
The first image has nice colors and a nice technique - It looks like one of those typical posters :D
(The word in german is "kitschig", no english word for it, Fozzmaster will understand :D)
Keep on drawing, I'd like to see some human characters (which are probably nice one's, you have so much passion)
edit: gosh, just saw your other pics - I hope you don't mind me to do this - just look at the eyes of the left one

If only you could do something else than furries that would be great.
what's up with furries? I can't understand that.
StarFinder

I draw furries and such because I ENJOY TO! Art is SELF EXPRESSION, and I don't feel I need to justify my reasons for drawing what I do. I don't go and ask other artists "Hey, why do you draw ____"? No..because art is a personal choice, and as far as I'm concerned, as long as it's executed well, who cares what the subject matter is? I LOATHE anime, yet, if it's well done, I won't pester the artist to 'stop' because I don't like/understand it.
So yeah, Regardless, whether it is furry art, wildlife art, anime, etc. you can't just pester the artist to 'change' because you don't like it. I draw because I enjoy it, and I enjoy furry/wildlife artwork. I don't draw things I don't enjoy..plain and simple, unless it's a commission. Otherwise, personal works, are of things that I enjoy illustrating. If that bothers you, tough.

Black_fish: the same reason people got to argue about the Jedi Chix in the past. Some peeps like it, some don't. If she likes do draw furries and is good at it, I dont' think we could really ask her do, like, furry Mechs, or furry landscapes, huh?
Maybe I'll draw a furry pinup one day...:D

@fozzybar/starfinder - I hope it doesn't bother you - If you want me to remove the links, please say it.
It just did it because starfinder linked her page, and so I thought it wouldn't be offensive.

I draw furries and such because I ENJOY TO! Art is SELF EXPRESSION, and I don't feel I need to justify my reasons for drawing what I do.
You are lucky SF, I have to justify with almost everyone online AND offline why I draw furres. I am constantly told that I have to stop drawing furres and draw more life drawings. Some people have told me to forget fantasy art completely, sacrafice creativity for Ringling School of arts. But art is ABOUT creativity, I do not see why people have to sacrafice such things for art. "do not draw furres, it is bad!" Rubbish! Look at Disney, hell, your animation cells are better than Disney, I don't see what anyone is complaining about. And Those cells really remind me of All Dogs Go To Heaven. ;) Don't know if you liked the movie or not.
Rock on with the furre art thing, but now I have to try to explain to my art teacher, and a lot of artists/comerads online why I refuse to stop drawing furres. ^^ Glad you carry the "I enjoy it and I don't care" attitude. It's good for an artist such as yourself.
Oh yes, before I forget. I like your realism drawings, yes, but for some reason, I'm more drawn to the cell shading bit, you convey more emotion with it. Keep it up. ^^

One thing to keep in mind, though: as far as companies are concerned, if you want to get hired, you must prove that you know how to draw everything first, then you can focus on "furries".
Disney will not hire you with a portfolio full of furries, neither will Pixar, etc...You must show that you know anatomy, have a sense of design, poses, dramatic views, etc...they care more about sketches that show dynamism than perfectly rendered animals. To show dynamism accurately, you must know anatomy, etc...
That is why a lot of people tell you to expand your horizons and get to know everything else before focusing on what you like the most. It's easy to dismiss the rest now and focus on what you like, except that it might come back to haunt you later.
As a final thought, I offer this quote. The first sentence is particularly a propos.
"Artists can color the sky red because they know it's blue. Those of us who aren't artists must color things the way they really are or people might think we're stupid." Jules Feiffer.

Hello Starfinder
I see…… I think an apology would be very aduacate know. You guys are right, to become a master you have to master very different styles. Only then can you truly express yourself from a technical point of view. It seems that Starfinder has an aditude that fits perfectly with an artist, I must give you my compliments on that.
About celshading and Disney, well it was just my opinion, nothing more. I like celshading in a way( anime and stuff) but Disney, very creative, but the rest………..
About the furries, I assume you guys mean that starfinder draws dogs. I just want to say that she should draw what she likes, and it seems that dogs are her favourite. But I must stress out that when you get older Christina and you want a job, you will have to have a broad variety of skills, anatomy, clothing and so on. To begin with, draw other animals. Then try humans and humans with animals. Stuff like that. I know you can do it, you seem to have the devotion and it seems that you are not lazy( oh man, I am the laziest person in the world :D:D). So get ‘m.

I have drawn a few humans before, and just finished this piece a few days ago:
http://www.shadowlands.biz/greg-edan.jpg
It's my friends, Greg (left) and Edan (right). The faces were drawn from a tiney yearbook photo (all I had as reference) and the bodies were done w/out reference, though I've seen these guys on campus enough to know the basics of how they look and dress.

cool pic. i like the way you shaded the pencil drawing. . it appears textured and smooth all at the same time. gregs face looks a little off.. .i think the problem is that the 2 sides of his face dont match up well. they almost seem like 2 seperate drawings that were pasted together.
on a side note, while you can (and probably should) forget all the nonsense on this thread, the last response tegehel wrote is very true. it doesnt only apply to companies either, it applies to colleges too.

*petpets* Good job starfinder. Keep it up with the furres, since you love doing them. ^^ It's obvious you can draw from life very nicely. :D It seems to me that you know what you are doing. Hehe, I was unprepared and didn't scan any of my life drawings when I first posted a furre. As for your portfolio, well, I've looked at your site and I see a good mix of humans and furres, and I -know- those aren't ALL of your drawings. So you are doing just fine!! XD I love how you capture the faces so well, I'll have to start practicing.

Excellent work on those wrinkles in the last one. The grid on that shirt is really making me sweat. :)
Nicely done. Looking forward to see your website when it's finished.
