Jooo-leee-annah!!
I am sooo glad you are sketching again. I was getting worried that life would consume you and bury your first love: art. This is some good stuff alright, and I am glad others are encouraging you as well.
These sketches are tight yet loose all at the same time. I think with more practice your hand will become more proficient and your lines will become more efficient (which means simpler). Less erasing (not that that is bad, I use one, too) but just that the lines go down easily because the hand knows where and how to create them because it is experienced. Somewhat like a singer: when they first start out their voice is tight, but the more they sing, the more beautiful it gets because it gets used and practiced.
I look forward to that with you. I love seeing talent developed.

These are great. Nice shading, I don't know how you people get such finesse out of that brutal bludeoning pencil. I'd like to see what you can do without a ref.... you need to practice your imagination too!

September 26th, 2006, 02:11 AM
I like your method for rendering shadow on skin, it makes it look rough but you get the values down well. I like your studies, but i think you should take on the challenge of drawing the full figure from head to toe. The first one in post #4 was the one that improessed me the most, and it is the closest to a full figure. Keep up the good work.
aph
September 26th, 2006, 03:21 AM
Yeah thats a good point working solidly on the head has its good points, but working on some figure drawing would help. Hands and bodies are very expressive. The first two drawings from your second post show that, a lot more involvement for the viewer. =)
Good work! Nice job on the update. Keep going back to that scanner!

I like this one, great update.
Just some minor crits:
The girl on the right, the thumb on her right hand seems a bit too high or out of place to the plane of the hand. I really like those fingers though.
Her chin needs a bit of sorting too, but I guess you noticed that one hehe.
Looks as if her ear is too high, maybe thats just the way she is. Keep going =D

Hey Julie, great sketchbook. You have an good sense of proportion, keep posting!
This one is particularly well done. I love the texture and the strong lines. It is also deceptively clean.

Yes, that is my boyfriend whom I made sit in his shorts for me actually.
What do you mean by deceptively clean?
Jason Rainville
September 30th, 2006, 03:35 PM
Well I take it as: it looks like you're quite scribbly and smudgy with your pencil, but in actuality everything in terms of value and line is all in the right place :)
Cordy
September 30th, 2006, 09:27 PM
Some of your shading has a smudge effect to it- but that might be intentional.
last one looks good.

October 1st, 2006, 12:55 PM
Your style's really unique and impressive. Whilst the lines aren't smooth it doesn't stop the images from looking realistic, which is very effective!
Like Rhinestone, I think that your figures are stronger than the faces, but I guess with the method you draw with that the faces would be hard to draw??
aph
October 3rd, 2006, 03:45 AM
Wow that new one is great! Nice.
Heres some small crits:
- I think the eye is too far forwards, it tends to be more sunken into the face, and this is normally evident from the side more than anywhere else, that said.. some people are different so. =D
- The hand needs to be pushed further so that it matches the rest of the picture. (more value)
Keep posting and hitting that art! Good work =]

Here are a couple of skeleton/skull studies. They aren't great cause the proportions are way off. I was using a photo.
I'll also get a whole skeleton in there someday.
There is also a pic of a girl I drew at the bus stop who was reading a book, and the other faces are just me trying to draw from imagination. Those ones aren't great cause again, the proportions are all funky. I'm trying to work on that more.

So I started to colour in the girl with gun pic. The gamma on my screens are really wierd so I don't know if it will look too dark or too high contrasty on other monitors.
All you gun enthusiasts will probably scoff at my gun design too..
I have never really drawn one so if you can crit me on that so I can get it right, that would be uber.
Cordy
November 2nd, 2006, 02:00 AM
hey julianna. I'd say that her right leg might be turned out a little to far, and the gun will probably need a hole at the end of the barrel for the ammo to come out of. other than that, it's dang nice.
aph
November 10th, 2006, 02:09 PM
I agree with Cordy in that the right leg does seem to be too far, its a sideview while the pose would suggest a different angle to the leg. I think the contrast is pretty high as well, maybe could use some attention. Love the face and design though pretty cool, think about making it a bit more your own though. For the gun get some ref!
Oh just also, make sure that the lips curve around the head, they seem to be a bit flat on the face. Keep it up Julianna! You took a huge leap and its really great so keep at it.

You are on a good way, and the last one will look great with a bit more work. Just consider the tips the others gave you, the thing with her legs and feeds. And I think it would be better to use some less strong colors, maybe a bit more pastel-colored and a less shiny violet. It's more friendly for the eyes.:)

Wow, well done all around - I think some minor crits would be to either scale back or fine-tune your shading so that it doesn't look so "choppy" or "heavy" like it does not. Maybe try small pools of darker tones, and blending them out where you need them with a blending stick.
As far as your monitor's color problems, you've obviously got an eye for smooth tones, so I don't think that'll be a recurring problem in the future.
Good work.

lines are looking pretty good. When you go to put down tone in pencils, think about how your stroke is going to read form [cross contour hatching]. how you put down the stroke of tone makes a big difference in how the form will read. :)

I'm really diggin' your pencil work. Those dinosaurs are looking great :) Your hatching is awsome.
I'd suggest that you experiment a little with your subject matter. Your studies are awsome. Your dinosaurs are awsome. Maybe do more of your own concepts? Those dinosaur studies could be used to create some awsome dragons.
You might also want to do a little more colour work. You did a great job on this piece http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=43970&stc=1&d=1162451988 You might want to work with more "neutral" colours, however, before you get into bright purples and whathaveyou.

tones are looking remarkably better after the master study. Something to keep in mind, when doing value studies, is working on a neutral background, and pushing it to light and dark values. It's very easy [and quick!] to do when working digitally. It will also help keep your values more accurate.
as for the dinos, I would look into the construction of the front arms. You seem to have given them a bit too much human shoulder connectivity.
more studies, and more of whatever you do to keep it fun :) you're definitely on the right track

Lovely picture your last one. You did good at capturing the underwater elements such as refrections and reflections. In the same lines as aph, I just think the red reflection on the left above that fish is not quite matching with the perspective. It doesn't really look to be on the water surface only in the water. Hope that helps, keep it up!

when doing self portraits, if you can get a stronger single light source, or "dynamic" lighting, I think it will help you with pushing your values. Also, if you get good values, you won't have to be so dependent on those hard dark lines you use.
also, with the hatching, you might want to look at this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51658&page=4)
sone_one does a couple of portraits, and he really impressed me with his use of hatching to show form...something I'm still trying to figure out :|

ah that last samurai on the sb page is looking pretty active! I'd think about tilting the sword so the tip is going towards the viewer [I know I know, it'll be harder to draw something thin like a sword at an angle] I think it'll give him that extra bit of preparedness to strike.
nice grinning wolfie too <3
hrmm I need to get into gear, you're gonna kill me on this project!

nice stuff. the birdies are very nice, and ur dinosaurs are also very nice. i'd mebbe try to consider the weight of the subjects, tho...they seem to be tilted at slightly weird angles. as u seem to handle mass pretty well, considering how mass operates in space shouldn't be too difficult:)

YAY 4 UPDATEZ!!!11!!eleven!1!!one!1!
Your lines are pretty schmexy as usual, but don't be afraid of the eraser to make them more schmexy! These studies are really nice. I think one of the only thiings you are lacking is fleshing out [furring out? har har] your animals. Your values seem to be a bit spiked in the light areas, with large differences in light [usually the white of the page] and shadow areas. Maybe concentrate on three tones in the light, and two in the dark [ I think, or it's 3 tones in the dark and two in the light] when thinking minimalistic. Right now you've got white of the page, dark grey, darker grey. If you ad wider range of value, it will help render 3d form.[it's why you liked that hippo so much, use of values]
although, where are the cute things being ripped apart by the dinos? :< I was so looking forward to that! hehehe
<3 as usual. Keep up the good work :)

Love your renderings of the faces, your line weight emphasizes alot of clarity but check you skull and anatomy studies, some of the bones are misproportioned...shouldn't be a big concern though since they don't translate into your gestures or renderings. Thanks for the crit! :)

Your sketches are very nice, I especially love looking at the animals and dinosaurs, their body language looks very natural and lifelike.
A suggestion for the first monster in your last post though: I like the way you've positiond the neck, but the mouth is a little flat and unconvincing. Maybe if the lips were curled back a little it would add some more dimention to the sketch. Other than that, your work looks fine, keep it up!

Wow, I don't know how much have you spent on this last one, but so far it looks very beautiful. I like how you paint the mist in the environment as well as the fade in the background. If it weren't for the animals in the painting, I would ask you if you are doing this from direct observation?
The detail of the tree's leaves and the grass is well done. Don't know what to suggest to make it better, but you really have outdone yourself in this one. Keep it up!

your wetlands pic is coming along very nicely. Try to continue thinking about lightsources and value ranges of the creatures in the environment. They stick out a bit right now because they have a strange range of contrast from that dark dark, to light colors in light...that really isn't present anywhere else in the image. I agree with rhineville about the brushes. The integration of custom brush and then your hand on top creates a good result. Get back in there and clean it up...and goodluck on that image :I it's come a long way from when you first started :)
that steampunk dino is a pretty cool idea. I'd like to see you finish that image up, and loosen up the posture a little bit. Just 'cause he's a robodino, doesn't mean he can't be smooth. or if you want him to be a bit of a stiff robo-thing, maybe make some chunkier parts to show some crudeness of design.
Looking forward to some moar artz!
disclaimer: erm. if this doesn't make sense. it's 'cause I'm tired.

Your values blow me away at times. Your last environment is also very beautiful.
You know I just started painting with Photoshop about a month ago and I noticed that the brushes I use have a big impact on how the shading results....So i went into window-brushes and i started making my own custom ones. If you get a chance try it...its really interesting to see the kinds of textures you can muster up.
great work so far. cheers

Wow, those life drawings are wonderful. You have a great understanding of planes on the figure, how they catch light or do not. Just very solid figures all around, great job! Don't let up over the summer, keep building that momentum (I'm saying that mostly for myself, almost finishing my first year of studying art too and I really need to keep the drawings going).

April 29th, 2008, 11:34 AM
Not bad! You figure drawing is something else though. Seems you got a better understanding of line and rendering while at Calgary. Keep it rocking and keep updating. Also, some of them aren't fully grounded and seem to be floating a bit, but you've gone and passed my skill level of critiquing, so not much more I can say other than ^.

omgomgomgomg I want your babies.
One piece that sticks out to me is the weight shift of your ogre. I see from the guy that's flying backwards that the ogre just struck him, but the overall posture of the ogre is "i'm about to swing this here hammer/club/thing" not "i just swung this and kicked your ass" Also there's no real foreground elements in the left hand side, which realy flatten the space, and bring the puny human into the foreground instead of the middleground where he should be. Just darkening that shrub a bit and having it less influenced by the mist might be enough.
your life drawings are really sexy as usual [erm can I really say that about old naked men...:nohope: I really do mean the quality of the drawings] I'm really looking forward to more updates...so that I can be even more jealous of your improving skillsets. You done any painting at school? I wanna see some of those! ;)
JM
April 29th, 2008, 08:58 PM
Tex: I think you're looking at it the wrong way? He just took a big swing and lunged forward as he was doing it. That's about the position you'd take if you just swung something from left to right.
Yeah, I agree with you about the empty/flatness of that side, which I will see about what I can do to fix it. I also have to fix the dudes shield cause the pieces are flying the wrong way which I just noticed...
Stark: Thanks :) I've gotten a lot more opportunity here to study the figure. I'll give you more to crit soon enough~
Safesheep: Thanks, I guess now's the time to see if I can keep things moving :P
Here's a couple more. Crits always apreciated!
Edit: Yeah actually Tex I think you're right bout the ogre. I think it might be the hammer being placed wrongly. And I think the guy flying back's arm is also kind of misplaced. Siiiiigh...
Texahol
May 5th, 2008, 06:47 PM
I think on the ogre, the posture is probably 'correct', it's just that it's too late in the action of swinging a hammer, so it reads more like a windup. If you had more torso twist, or had him offbalance from the swing [giant hammer would create a lot of force], it would read more as a post-swing. Another option for this scene would have been to illustrate just after the hit, making it really dynamic...and allowing you to have shards of the sheild follw the direction of the hammer creating a 'connect-the-dots' action.
I think the shield shards are fine, I wouldn't worry too much about the direction. It was a powerful hit and the shield is 'sploding!!! boom! I think they work well compositionally anyhow. the falling guy does have something funny happening in the torso/shoulders, but I'd honestly need ref to figure out how that would look :/
I'm not sure how much I would worry about fixing everything, as you want to submit this in your portfolio for school...so maybe keep it clean, fix the easy stuff and remember what you learned for the next time?
not really sure what to say about your life drawings, aside from being jealous :) looking forward to more schtuff!

Hello -
I've been enjoying art school a lot so here is some stuff from my studies. We got to do a nude model the other day which was nice - haven't had one in a while.
Also, I've been getting into watercolours so here's a few veggies from life - did some portraits of a few of my classmates but still trying to get the hang of painting people.
Oh yeah, a few studies of Anthony Hopkins face for a school project. (Ref pics taken from the net)
Aaaand a few pages from the ol' sb. Trying to get better at drawing people from memory - I'm also trying to draw more action, jump, kick stuff to make my sb look more interesting! Haha, sorry my stuff is still pretty basic at the moment. I'll eventually get more into digital and less academic whatnot.
I hope you do enjoy, and comments/crits extremely welcome!
