When you scan a drawing and it has a huge shadow over it, there's a few ways to correct that.

In photoshop:
ctrl+l. Play with the sliders and see how they effect your drawing. You can eliminate the shadows entirely and leave only lineart.

You can also select the magic wand tool and click an area of shadow in between lines. Then go to select>similar. Then hit delete. You should be left with only line art. I may have messed up these directions, don't have a copy of photoshop handy atm to cconfirm it.

If you truly interested in getting better (most people here are), you're going to have to drop the stylized stuff for a while. You can still draw comic-esque things for fun, but you should try studying anatomy from life or photos, and doing still lifes. Draw more from reference, and less from your head. No, it probably won't be as fun as drawing hot chicks with big boobs and guns, but it will make your hot chicks with guns look better when you get around to drawing them again. It's hard to find a balance between having fun and improving yourself, but you'll find it.

On the same vein, you can become better with colour in photoshop by getting back to the basics and painting with acrylics and oils. It's certainly helped me a lot.

And don't be discouraged if you update 5 or 6 times and nobody says a thing. Remember that on these forums you're on the same playing field as professionals. Also keep in mind the guest to member ratio. Right now, there are 91 members and 650 guests browsing the forums. That means a potential 650 commentless views all at once. So don't equate lack of comments to you not progressing or anything. I only mention it because I got discouraged about 2 years ago and just dropped myself off the site.

Just keep practicing, and goodluck!

May 21st, 2006, 01:11 PM
hey there! nice to see you in the sketchbook-section, too. your last photo for the challenge showed huge improvement, so i guess you'll show a similar energy in drawing. :)

sticking with the general proportions and not going into details right now is a good way, so is working with reference. sorry, can't give you too much of advice here, because you seem to know what to do. :)

best of luck for the spanish finals, see you

Hey ivy, nice loose sketches here! Try and get yourself a copy of Andrew Loomis' book "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth". Just google A.L. Hope this helps. :) Keep postin bro!

wi_2
May 21st, 2006, 05:38 PM
hey man, a noob then huh? :)

here is my shot

be loose.... beware though that loose really means stuff like 'dont be afraid to put lines where you wouldnt expect them' or 'if you make a mistake just let it be and go over it or something' well yeh.. so being loose is more like.. dont be afraid. whatever it is you are afraid of.

being loose does not mean stop you brain usage and scribble whatever.
it is very very importand that you do think.. or more like 'see' what you want to draw .. what your next line is going to resemble.. what your current line is resembling..
just so you know.. :)..

draw with utmost concentration on what you are doing.. AND.. do not be afraid to do whatever... anything is allowed.. there are no rulez..

now.. that chick and/or the death maker dude you drew is much better then drawing those stick figures... if you want to learn posing.. do think about the anatomy at least to a simple level.. do draw the bulges etc.. this to keep your mind focused on forms and keep your attention to what you are doing..

good luck..
thinkfor yourself. and dont fear.. dont even lisnt to me.
but i would reccomend to test what i say and reinvent it for yourself :D

May 21st, 2006, 06:13 PM

Hi there. wi_2 made a really good point in his post.
I don't have much to say and don't know where to direct you without confusing you, but one thing that's the truth is to start drawing from life. Study people in cafés or on the street, it'll help you with proportions. And you'll learn how to see how light and shadows work.
I'll check by again and see what more you've posted.
Good luck.

Hugs!

wi_2
May 23rd, 2006, 03:13 PM
another thing i forgot to mention
another meaning for drawing loose :)

you can use it to draw quite brainlessly.. just draw some lines randomly
and in this see whatever you see.. whatever pops up.
then draw that with full concentration..

off course you can mix these.. if you get stuck.. draw some lines to free yourself and then go back to full concentration..

this is a really good way to inspire yourself..
youll be amazed at what you will see in these lines once you got the hang of it.

or just draw something you do have in your mind but dont know what it looks like really loosely on paper. so aid you.. then go back to pure concentration..

always go back there. you must not loose track of your brain too much or youll dump notingness on paper like poking with a stick in the beach sand..
very relaxing.. but not very productive.
:)..

hope it helps you.

Do some from pics or do some self portraits. WACOMs can be hard to get used to, they have slick surfaces.

If you don't mind running through alot of nibs, then put a sheet of paper over your tablet and it should feel better.

What you need to try when doing still life is to almost wrap the tones around the object, dont use heavy black outlines to start the shape- let it grow as you flesh it out. Do another and try starting light and letting the tones of shadow outline it for you ;)

June 3rd, 2006, 09:46 PM

When studying anatomy, try to make your drawings as accurate as possible. Also, don't just copy blindly, try your best to understand and remember the text and pointers that comes along with it. Remembering the proportions, muscles and how they function will help you in the long run. Keep it up!

nothing wrong with bad drawings as long as you
see where you went wrong and what you need to
work on. As your observation skills improve, you will
notice more mistakes and problems, so you just have
to see how you can correct them. If you can put one
thing right, you can put them all right, just take it
one step at a time.. that and persistance will help
you improve more than anything.

don't give up and try and draw everyday..

ok.. now there we are :)...

please look at that awesome dragon you did.
look at the movement in it.. look at the silhouette of it.. how interesting that turned out...
see what happens if you would kill the quick tail scribble in the lower left corner.. the dragon would turn into a rectangle basicly..
that scribble fooled my brain into the actual tail.. its a beautyful addition to make it move.. wow.
now transfer that movement into your characters.. f*k anatomy for now. get the basics first.. compare the silhouettes of this dragon and your characters.. looks at the shapes.. and see the difference.. see why one moves and lives.. and the other stiff and static.. figure that out.. and continue.

movement and flow for all.. dance with your lines... flow free and happy.. :)
and i dont mean ballet.. its a nice dance.. but sinix for example is dancing a different dance.. a wild dance.. but its still a dance.. do the dance.. feel the rythm the flow..
the connection of it all.. its this.. the simple design that feed pretty to your images.. to that dragon.. not anatomy or realism..

anatomy make thing look good because of the flow.. the muscles flow.. they are amazingly beatiful... but not because they are corrent.. but because they flow.. look at bad drawing.. bad faces.. see how the faces look sepperate.. falling appart.. no connection between the lines.. look at the faces you do like.. the ones that are awesome.. see how every shape.line.shading makes sense.. the connect.. they flow all around..
try to draw falling cloth.. if the shapes dont flow.. it wont make sense and look bad..

try to understand this and apply it.. realism wont make your images good.. its the design that does.. the feeling it gives..

sorry for the brainstorm.. try to understand :)

Its good to see you are putting in the segment lines to make sure your proportion are on. Keep doing it it will only make you better. Good job keep posting! You will only get better with each pencil stroke even though at times it doesn't seem like it. :rendered:

beatifull last post!!.. color them man.. f*ck it.. who cares.. have fun doing it.. see what you can do wand what you like.. dont think of it as trying to make pretty pictures and then failing.. htink of it as a game.. a play or a dance you just do for the fun of it.. not to entertain your onlookers.. f*ck the onlookers:)

i really love the 'one more'' beautifull feeling to it:)

also i read something about segmenting.. useing the 8 head for a person thingy.. i agree and disagree.. . its good to know.. but using it maked your dance woody.. so i'd say.. learn it.. then dump it in the back of your brain and just go on drawing... now and then it'll pop up in your mind (youll remember it) and then you can use it if you want.. (if you want).. dont let anything block you dance though:).. keep it up.. doing great!

thanks wi :teeth: for ur wonderful comments , hehe i will go dance 2mrw and break a leg as they say lol and the "one more" was actualy a result of a mistake lol but they say there is no such thing as a mistake in art i just continued with it and i love the result! **starts dancing**
