Hey gang. Its been a very long time since i've last posted on this forum. My art has taken a huge hit, and I want to go back to essentials as much as I can. So i'll try to update this badboy daily, and with some colour sketches as well.

Ok, so here we go...

gmags - Thanks alot man! I'm really trying to get back into the flow of things.

Hey gang. Here is today's batch. I really need to get back into bridgeman...

First one here was a blind drawing. I saw another forum sketchbook where they did this, looked fun :)

Here is today's batch!

Just a couple of quick warmups off the top of my head. The 2nd page has little dudes on it, and I made a finalized version on page 3.

Then lastly, this one was a real quick doodle, where you sort of scribble around on the page, then make something of it. Really fun thing to do.

Hey gang! A lite post this time! Tomorrow's will be better. The first is a quick paint over of a previous post. I'm trying some new things around in photoshop. I don't think I like the preset brushes. Maybe i'll thinker around more, or just stick to painter.

And the second is a panel from the comic i'm working on. Cheers!

love the city scape! good to see you back again, hope you can stay for longer this time eh eh!
a suggestion with the females, make their waists longer, essentially i think it might help to group the external oblique with the waist to make the lower part softer and wider. also make sure the rib cages arent too big but be sure to keep it at roughly 1.5 head lengths.
look more into the pelvis too- have a go at drWing the bone structure un-simplified and try get access to a skeleton if you can its immensly helpful for figuring out how to place the legs and the muscles...you definitly have the riht simple shapes its good to see the waist as a rectangular box wider at the front- keep that up! cheers :)

I thought I would start this post off with some colour! The guy beneath this is Trace from Metroid Prime Hunters. Not sure how many of you are familiar with this guy, but none the less, he's sweet. Just a quick drawing and colouring job. I may do some more in the future :)

After that is some sketchbook stuff, followed by a design for the comic I'm working on. The design is for the Sin known as Sloth in his demon form.

Until next time! Keep creating! And keep it FRESH!

This one was kindda fun. I was at work, and was about to start drawing, when one of the girls I work with said to do a characture of the guy on the cover. I'm not very good at doing charactures, but what the hey :D

After I did the pencils, we photocopied like 10 copies, and posted them all over the employees rooms and washrooms. Each had funny messages attached to them. Great fun!

evildisco - Hey thanks! I'm trying to work at better quality line work. Especially Line Weight.

Hey gang. Just a quick paint job before I get started working! I'm trying hard to learn how to paint "painterly" I guess you could call it. I've seen multiple people start a painting with the pencils, shaded and rendered, then in photoshop they greyscale paint everything, and colour over top or something? I'm trying to learn this technique, but I find it hard as heck!

Anywho, here is my first attempt;

Today's update is rather small. Just some drawings from K.Chen and Bridgman. The things I like most from thier work is that they break things down to the most simplest shapes. The hard part, is learning how to apply these to real things. The concepts and techniques are there, they just take some applying.

Also, still trying some things out with painting in Photoshop. Today's was a greyscale one that I read from BrokenCow. It's a great read, and I will continue to do them. The one I did was from reference, then I added a colour layer overtop of the greys.

Anyways! Until next post my friends!

Great going Jar! Nice to see you practice that Kevin Chen!
Did you see some more of his notes on Character Design.org?
I also find Gottfried Bammes anatomy book useful, thanks to a guy named Taxman.

You guys are awesome!
Is that a self portrait or the 40 year old virgin guy?

nah I think you ahead of me in painting .. what attempts in paiinting, both traditionally or digitally, are the ones you see in my sb :)

as for your last painting, the face is too angular and the sharp shadows doesn't look good on a woman's face :)

September 25th, 2006, 07:01 PM
Bard - Thanks for stopping by! Kevin is a great artist, and his work is helping me alot. I have old drawings that he did before, but thanks for that site. I actually have that bookmarked, and i'll have to take another look through it :)

I'll keep busy, you know that! Caanan? He has a book with the Dable Bros. and they got picked up by Marvel. So yup! He's officially published under Marvel now, so congrats to him! And finally, yes that's the cat from the 40 year old virgin. Ha ha, i'm surprised you recognized him!

OldNoobie - Thanks for the critic. As for the shadows, I drew it from ref and there were heavy shadows. I thought that would add some sort of dramatic punch to the pic. Better luck next time on my end :)

Hey friends! Today's post is a decent one. Did some life drawing and found a wonderful tutorial online for drawing, and thought I would try it out. It's something I'm going to try out more often for sure.

Also, some of you may have seen on another forum that there is a torso workshop. Draw/paint 50 torso's in a month. So I'm trying that as well.

Finally, I new painting with a new technique I tried out. Let me know what you think! Thanks again for stopping by!

I'm also working on a painting from reference. I have to stop now to go to work, but I thought I would share it anyways. I have to adjust the levels and the hue/sat pretty soon as her skin is looking more yellow then it should.

I also midly screwed up and didn't put in dark enough shadows! Cheers!

Oh man I love this thread. You are doing just the things that I should be doing. (studying the anatomy) I have a lot to learn from this thread. Thanks for keeping those form studies "simple". You have a beautiful way of using the contour line. It's something that I can't do myself.

Lovely stuff. I do like your pencils better then paintings, maybe you should do those just as much. I also prefer staying monochrome and penciled whenever i can, but lately, i found that painting without drawing helps A LOT.
Cool works here!

Heya gang! Been a few days since I updated, so sorry :) I'm really trying to get better at this whole life drawing jazz. I've been reflecting alot on my art, and where I want to go with it, and what I want IT to do for ME. This also means what I NEED to do for IT.

Ok. So. We start off with some life doodles, and 2 concepts that some of you may have already seen for the Kord and Harley comic book project that I'm working on. These two are 2 demons from the book. Greed and Envy. I hope you enjoy them, as PRIDE is next! Can't wait!!!

Hey gang. I have something to confess. The main reason why my art has taken such a drastic hit, and the lack of post is a stupid, and shamefull reason. World of Warcraft. I have been literally ADDICTED to this piece of crap for too long. I am no longer letting it control my time (as sad as this sounds, it's true.)

One positive thing has happened from this experience though. My art appetite has increased 5000%.

Thanks to those who stayed with me, and I hope to share more, quicker, and better!

Whoa you're definitely one hard working learner Jar.

I'm enjoying your sketchbook so far, I personally think you have a talent for comic drawing.

I guess one general suggestion I'd make is for you to try your hand at portraying more characters with different build, height and weight.

jar
February 4th, 2007, 04:37 PM
JERI - Thanks mate! That's actually something I plan on trying real soon. Hopefully the life drawing class I'm taking now can help me with this.

Well, today I had off from work, so I'm tinkering around with colouring! All but the last one are line works from Blizzard, and I coloured over them. Till next update!

I've been hacking away, trying to understand this starting a painting in greyscale, then adding colour jazz.

Anywho, I didn't draw these, I'm sure these are Blizzard concept drawings, I just wanted something cool and fun to paintover. Please let me know what you think!

Little rough. I like the rough-ness of it though;

painting is hard :( but what you can try on those is push the highlights more, right now they seem kind of on the dark side. It is only a suggestion, I am by no means a decent painter :bashful: so I am probably wrong in the approach.

Life drawing was great and fun this week (like usual). There is some tragic news however. Apparently, there are not enough people to meet the demand, sothe life drawing class my come to a hault. I am not looking forward to that.

I have been doing some thinking, and I have come to the conclusion that I don't want to pursue my interest in comics. It's a tough business, and I'd rather spend my time getting a concept art job. So expect to see more "wacky" shit.

Here's todays post. First is a warm-up from my MIND!!!

dude your anatomy studies are realy coming on you realy starting to creates cool forms and poses but you should build on those studies you have all the scketches and gestures but no big final pieces, i think you should do a few solid line human drawings of head to toe usuing the knowledge u have from your bridgeman studies. i would liek to see that:D

(P.S mario is greatest video game character ever concieved by the human mind!)

It sems you have corrected this problem, and to make sure you don't do it again I'm gonna point it out-

Your female figures almost always had that ribcage muscle thing, and it really freaked me out, it gave too much of a masculine edge, so be wary, also you seemed to fixed the slightly masculine jawline as well.

That said I enjoyed this SB very much.

3 or 4 pics are just MSN/loading screen doodles!

Last pic, is a rough design for a game some friends and I are working on. I'll try to update more soon. Thanks guys!

Very interesting treatment of the kid's face in your recent post. I'm assuming that his face is covered with some sort of slime in the non-shadowed areas; combined with his expression, it gives him a sinister, horror-movie feel that I like.

You seem to have a good understanding of light and shadow; it particularly shows in the image of the woman on post #122. Whether you're aiming for comic book illustration or illustration in general, you should do quite well in the long run.

Hey gang!

I've been pretty busy with Kord and Harley, so sorry for the lack of content. Today i'm starting two things;

1) Daily 30 second life studies. I'll be doing 30 second gesture drawings. Once in the morning, and one before bed. Keep it FRESH :D

2) Super hero Fridays! These will be digital or pencil. Whatever I feel like doing that day. Todays superhero doesn't count ha ha.

So, with that, I have a few posts. I will be posting again tonight as well. I took one of the 30 second gestures I did, and did a quick paintover. Was kindda fun.

See ya soon!

I've also got a couple sketches from phone-calls/listening/watching movies, and a sketchy Hulk!

Have fun...oh...and guess what comes out today???

Hey gang.

So, the first pic is a thumbnail. Around the size of your hand stretched out. Basically, I bought this "Drawing Comics" by Stephen Platt. Really awesome artist too. So it all fundimentally boils down to these steps:

Work small. Thumbnail size. Then blow it up via photoshop/photo copier (to the size of comic board), then print her out, somewhat trace it on, and detail that som-bitch up.

So far its really interesting. I'm able to keep alot of energy this way. It's taking me a little longer than normal per/page. But I'm sure that will get fixed!

http://www.angelaroy.ca/jar/ish5_pg006_test.jpg

Next up is a few life drawings, as well as a combo of em all. I think I will upload them weekly like this. I like it.

Also, I thought I would throw 2 links out there. One is this awesome site I found that does 30s gestures. If you can't get to a class, or your on the run, I seriously recommend this:

Pose Maniacs (http://www.posemaniacs.com/)

And finally, there is this great book I bought a while back that has helped me as well:

Figure In Motion (http://www.amazon.ca/Figure-Motion-Thomas-Easley/dp/0823016919/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224873480&sr=8-1)

Hey Jar!
cool to see that Kord and Harley is still coming out. Your pencils stand out amongst your digital stuff. I think that it is because it looks "harder" but we all realize that digital painting takes a lot of work too. I think that the work is paying off for your color pieces. watch your edges, sharpen your color choices and push the details.

good luck.
five stars from me btw- just cuz i love ur comic pages

I really like a lot of your stuff posted here. I think that Spiderman piece is pretty strong and could make a nice portfolio sample. And could be stronger with a flat rendered cityscape behind him. If you use the black, grey, white theory. The cityscape should be grey to white. You might have to put a bit of light on the spiders so they don't get lost. Would really emphasis the idea that's he's hanging upside down. Like your stuff, keep it up.

Just making a nice LONG awaited update!

I'll get back to replying to the previous posts asap! Talk to you soon you guys!

So a quick little back story to these. I've been doing some pretty solid client work as of late, and it's keeping me super busy. I came to the realization over the last few weeks that I have not been posting sketches, or any content really.

So to remedy this, I'm going to draw a Hero a day (to the best of my ability. Might be every other day). So instead of posting a new thread all the time ha ha, I figure I'll drop them in this thread.

So, here's to plenty of drawlings!

OH, I should mention some rules as well. No drawing can be more than an hour, unless it's on a weekend ha ha! And these drawing are all digital unless otherwise stated.

Here we go!

DAY 1:
SPIDER-MAN
http://www.angelaroy.ca/jar/spider_man_05122011.jpg
This one was fun. The hour came up real close, so that's why Spidey here is missing the classic webbing on his costume.

DAY 2:
THE HULK
http://www.angelaroy.ca/jar/hulk_05132011.jpg
Not terribly fond of this one. Again, the hour came up quick, and left little time for shading and rendering. Ends up looking very flat.

DAY 3:
THE SILVER SURFER
http://www.angelaroy.ca/jar/ssurfer_05142011.jpg
This was fun. Learned some stuff today that will affect my workflow. Took a little over an hour, hell, it's Saturday right? :)

DAY 4:
GHOST RIDER
http://www.angelaroy.ca/jar/ssurfer_05142011.jpg
I was able to stream this drawing on the UStream this morning, which was great! If you were there while the show was live, thanks once again for watching!

I took suggestions from the room, and we went with Ghost Rider. I got a chance to add those cheesy smoke effects! Either way, had a blast.
