dear Form, have you run out of poetry?
i think that this is not how it should be.
betwixt the mind and keys there lies a link
through which we all can see how Form doth think.
so please incline thine ear and give me place
and spring forth from thy loins your style and grace
to be put into words both true and eloquent
and save not for the match, which is irrelevent
in both this time and space because this forum
is built on honor, rules, and, yes, decorum.
to see is not to think, yet not to feel;
good luck to 9ine. LET'S GIT IT ON FO' REEEEEL! :moon:

I've always been a fan of Neil Gaiman for interesting premises (his storytelling sometimes comes up a little short). Stealing some ideas from him:
++The "Old Gods" (Norse, Babylonian, Greek/Roman, Inuit, Egyptian, etc) are still around, but have fallen from power and are forced to take "mundane" jobs. Illustrate one of these gods in their new life (stolen from the Novel "American Gods")
++Illustrate the short story "Chivalry" (The idea is very simple: A late-middle-aged widow finds the Holy Grail in an Oxfam shop and decides it will look perfect on her mantle. All is well until Sir Galahad turns up on her doorstep, hoping to complete his quest in her modest living room)
++"The Sweeper of Dreams"-- This one is short enough I'll just type it out:
"After all the dreaming is over, after you wake, and leave the world of madness and glory for the mundane day-lit daily grind, through the wreckage of your abandoned fancies walks the sweeper of dreams.
Who knows what he was when he was alive? Or if, for that matter, he ever was alive. He certainly will not answer your questions. The sweeper talks little, in his gruff gray voice, and when he does speak it is mostly about the weather and the prospects, victories and defeats of certain sports teams. He despises everyone who is not him.
Just as you wake he comes to you, and he sweeps up kingdoms and castles, and angels and owls, mountains and oceans. He sweeps up the lust and love and the lovers, the sages who are not butterflies, the flowers of meat, the running of deer and the sinking of the Lusitania. He sweeps up everything you left behind in your dreams, the life you wore, the eyes through which you gazed, the examination paper you were never able to find. One by one he sweeps them away: the sharp-toother woman who sank her teeth into your face; the nuns in the woods; the dead arm that broke through the tepid water of the bath; the scarlet worms that crawled in your chest when you opened your shirt.
He will sweep it up-- everything you left behind when you woke. And then he will burn it, to leave the stage fresh for your dreams tomorrow.
Treat him well, if you see him. Be polite with him. Ask him no questions. Applaud his teams' victories, commiserate with him over their losses, agree with him about the weather. Give him the respect he feels he is due.
For there are people he no longer visits, the sweeper of dreams, with his hand-rolled cigarettes and his dragon tattoo.
You've seen them. They have mouths that twitch, and eyes that stare, and they babble and they mewl and they whimper. Some of them walk the cities in ragged clothes, their belongings under their arms. Others of their number are locked in the dark, in places where they can no longer harm themselves or others. They are not mad, or rather, the loss of their samity is the lesser of their problems. It is worse than madness. They will tell you, if you let them: they are the ones who live, each day, in the wreckage of their dreams.
And if the sweeper of dreams leaves you, he will never come back."

Man and his shadow or the man and his runaway shadow. There is a book about this story when shadow ran from the man and become more successful and suggested him to become her shadow, I think, even shadow number two. Eugene Schwarz is the author of the story.

hey, I just realized something Cody (yeah, I'm slow on the draw sometimes). When you ask 271 people to toss some ideas around, you get no place, fast. I think that we need to just agree on a basic theme and then let cody just surprise us with the topic so we have no real idea what to expect. Obviously your not going to please everyone with whatever topic we pick..and there will be people who are not in their comfort zones but that's the point.

Not in marketing, are you? :) Just 'last man standing' would seem to make sense.
With regard to the topic, I'm in for what Coro's saying. But given as he's mr senior art bod, he's probably got the best idea. The problem is that he's competing, no? So how about he or Manley suggest someone they know for Topic Master? Might increase the coverage too :)

I updated the reserves list. If someone pulls out of the competition, I'll draft the reserves in the order they are listed. Keep in mind that this list is only valid for round one, as drop outs from later rounds wll be replaced by merit in the competition (usually by a vote). Keep the hope alive, reservees, I've already drafted one.

to all the reserve listers: are any of you making a piece regardless of not being officially in? I will not be the least surprised when the deadline arrives and at least a few of the 271 contenders flake/choke/disappear with no prior warning. If it goes down like that, you wouldn't have time to create a piece, but you might be able to arrange with Cody to slot your already completed piece in. be understudies or something. Wost case scenario, you'd have yourself a new piece for your portfolio. Just a thought. Judging by the turnouts in the first LMS (which was, what, half the size?), this is what I'd do if I were a reserver

Kinda late Corey! Thunderdome is under way. you will be put on the reserves list, so you gonna have to wait for some people to drop the contest. Then Cody will add you to the reserves list. So you will have to check back, periodically. But, don't count that you will be added, as cody holds these and he does up the tournaments. I wish this site was alittle better with promoting things. Atleast send members an email or something O_O. I feel cheated. I was waiting for the last one to be over, now i'm too late for this and have to wait another year ! ArGgggggghttp

This was not an official sponsored activity, so there was little advertising other than a thread in the lounge inviting people to join in. Take Palumbo's advice and carry on through the contest.
If it were possible, I would give up my spot to let you replace me (love your work) and participate from the sidelines myself. At the same time, its not a real competition, only reward is bragging rights. Once I'm booted off (hopefully not first round, but still highly likely looking at my competition) Im still gonna follow through the topics and create work as if I were in.

like me, so count me in for the "safe" reserve list. :lens:

The reservists are welcome to complete a piece alongside the main competition. If you have one completed when there is a dropout at the last moment, I would be able to slip you in their place. I am not going to organize a second "reservist" tournament however, 271 people is enough to manage.

If I was on the reserve list again, I would definitely be working on the same topics alongside the competitors. You don't want to be called up in the last week before the deadline and have to start from scratch against 2 people that have been working for 4+ weeks.

as i recall, didn't people who were on the reserves or missed the previous last man standing competition hold their own small t-dome with the same topic that the actual tdome had?
oh, you mean this? http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50535 I think it was mainly for round 1 losers, but yeah.
With all these reserves, why can't the entire reserve list battle for a single spot in round 2? I doubt the extra person in round 2 would cause much trouble, and he'd likely take the place of a round 2 no-show anyway. It would let everyone compete, but it would still make it harder for those who didn't sign up in time. That, and us normal signups have had a 2-week head start.
Just a thought. That, or you state with absolute confidence that there will be enough no-shows that any reservist will get a shot. With this thunderdome being twice as big, we'll surely get more dropouts.

I think you are right Mike, john o. put something together as a little mini-match for reservists. I think the same topic was illustrated and the deadline was the same as well. It would give everyone who missed out some competition, and you would already have a piece ready if you were drafted late in the competition.

I wish that I had seen this a long time ago because it would have been fun to compete in. Is it too late for the reserve 2nd battle?
And if you are still looking for topic suggestions, how about:

Personally I think a melee where all us reservists duke it out for one spot on the second rounds would be very cool. but the mighty TD moderator would have to agree... One Poll like the _ow's. would be great .
but what ever Im still painting an entry

what would work well would be a reserve list "last man standing:epilogue"
i would be happy to front it - tho i'm sure there is someone who knows more about it out there that may be able to make it happen a bit better :)
if its as simple as starting a topic and sorting out whos against who (randomly of course) then i will do that if everyone thinks its ok? I want to be involved too :P But also have our round go to a poll instead of guest judges.

Yeah, it was called LMS out for blood, so all those you got dropped or didn't participate got to go at it. Sadly it only lasted one round, I think it got a bit confusing about hose wanting to come in after the round was over and more defeated peeps wanted to come in...I dunno. But, it was fun. Thanks Johnny boy, glad to see you down for this one-

Yeah it was for those who didn't make it past the first round or didn't get on the list in the first place. There were some really good entries, so having something like this for the ppl on the reserves list would probably work. Of those who entered we had a lot of no shows though so a second round would have been pretty difficult to set up.
It was fun to do, and its not as much work as keeping the whole 270+ TD going ... how do you ever do that strych9ine?

Strych9ine, thanks for getting me on the reserves but im so far down it's unlikely i'll get drafted. Quite busy with professional work at the mo so i'll probably duck out. I'd always fit it in if i got an official place coz hell its the last man standing but im an uber reservist. Please, please, please tell me there will be a number 3?:)
