A belated thanks for the comments. Sorry to keep people waiting *cough* but here's a bit more. I absolutely love your art and style Walnut! I came across your stuff by accident and have had it bookmarked since early last year! Please don't ever stop sharing your works of art. I know it's "concept" art but your piece "posarama.jpg" reminds me of some artwork I saw at my mother's house last time I visited her. It was very much finished and yours looks it! I'd go so far as to say I'd probably buy it if you made prints of it *heart*
Where else do you post your work or is this everything? You are so very talented - what is your day job? *grin*

Hey Misara, glad you like my stuff! There's a little bit more over at epilogue.net, gallery is here (http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/list.pl?gallery=6562).
As for my day job, i guess you could call me a part time illustrator's assistent. Not as hot as it sounds, mainly comes down to screwing around in Photoshop. Hope you like these modelsketches (and maybe even the piece of crap painting i'm working atm). Sorry for the tardy reply, haven't been active for a while.

Awesome update. Great work on everything; I really dig those ogres. The only nitpick I have is in regards to the fairy. Her left leg bothers me... it seems to be protruding directly from the vine/root on which she is seated.

you have a really rich sketchbook, and you do a better job than most with translating your life drawings to your more creative works. nevertheless don't let those intricacies you capture in your life sketches to get lost, it's the little surfaces and specifics that really make something look alive.

Well Walnut, you are spending A LOT of time on figure drawing, and thats admirable. Truly. I can't wait till I'm in Figure drawing next year. Well done. ^^
I suppose post number 104 is awesome. Love the picture with Cthulu, and would love to see it a little more developed if its original. All of your pencil sketches are delightful. The troll sketches are really coming along but they look a tad bland occasionally. I'm not sure why. The color seems flat in the one with the two long lower teeth. Theres alot of cool blue and some ocher yellow... cadmium-ish red might help a bit.
Sorry if I'm being picky...>.>

Krigbrann: Thanks man, i'm glad you're liking the model stuff. I really pour my sweat and blood into those. I was putting in some 9 hours into it, so i guess you could say a lot of time went into it. There's some bigger 1 hour+ drawings too, but they're trickier to photograph, so i'm letting those lie on the shelf. As for #104, a lot of it's subconsciously stolen from 30's pulp covers, so i'm not sure where the line of originality lies in that one. Been hung up on the format and compositon too. It will take a while to get it right.

Ok. I love your sketches and studies, your style is sexy! Girls studies are top notch imo. About painting, I'm a little angry with you because I think you should dare more than that, seeing how you can draw. I don't know...try to treat color and light as you treat lines in your sketches..dare more!

I really, really enjoyed designs and characters and ideas and style and crazyess and basically, everything!
Great progress from the beginning, you just really inspired me to draw more sketches (i will do so immediately after i finish this writing)
It is a really shame that you don't yet have your stars, i think it is because people usually look more into rendering than style and overall cohersion of work, i gave you 4
Stuff you need to do is little speedpaint-rendering practises, your drawing skills are better than your painting so if you got your painting in order you really start to rock
ps: How did you learn your anatomy, what are your practise methods?
EDIT: hmm it seems you had you stars after all, wonder why it didn't show up before...
walnut
November 6th, 2008, 04:27 PM
Nettle Mountain (great name btw): I try not to care too much about the stars, so don't sweat it. I like getting lots of comments lots more anyway. :)
About anatomy, i guess what skill i have in it is the results of lots and lots of model classes. Studying the bones and muscles is pretty vital too. And i really love drawing naked people too, that helps enormously as well. Try doing short thumbnails poses, always a good exercise. I'll have to take you up on the painting advice, it's something i've been too lazy about lately.
And while i'm at it, here's two more things in the clogged and overful pipeline:

November 9th, 2008, 02:39 PM
You're definitely starting to come into your own now. May we see the referenced photos for your enviros (if they were from photos that is)? We'd be better equipped to critique your work then. :D
Try doing some referenced life studies from people with more dynamic poses and also try drawing more animals. When working with more dynamic poses, really take the single flow of motion into consideration (usually a Line of Action that represents the spine in many cases). Keep practicing those types of poses and you'll start to "loosen up" your drawing style, which'll help your drawing greatly overall. :)
You're improving pretty substantially, keep up the good work... and by the way: Working hard at art is all well and good, but don't be ashamed about the alcohol and walks that you said you were taking before. :P If you work too much on something that you love doing, you'll eventually become unenthusiastic about it. Make sure you don't kill your own enjoyment from over-exhaustion.
Nettle_Mountain

If a critique maybe a slightest bit soft at some parts, sharper edges could do the trick there and there.

Blightedart: I'll keep your advice in mind, my thanks for it. As for people studies, i'm doing that on a regular basis. I'm putting some sketches in this post. Plus, i'm putting up the originals from the enviros.

Sick stuff mister, i would have sweared those poses were life studies... i really have to take real life drawing classes as well when i get to finland, my characters are so stiff still...
And latest challenge, I really love that man with a sword, the desing is complete whole as a sum of it parts, interesting and different. Only critique is the light is little too much daylight, like on the day with clouds front of the sun , i am allways a sucker for clear & strong light shadow contrast and a clear direction of light

i really like the clean lines, expression on th face and concept here, to nitpick: her right leg seems to be little weird, like she is not having her weight on it but floats and shadows are right from the up so it makes her look little flat

That bluish tint on crab is really neat, like that one and solidity of spider one. I also like the use of air perspective in limbs of crab, it is good thing in opencanvas when trying to separate overlapping forms. (i use it everywhere)
I first was little hmmm with middle picture but it actually did grow one me after little looking, i quess the thing what bugges me is that colours of tail, tube and lover "tail" doesnt connect into body too well. Maybe because colour values are lighter in those parts than in middle body?
Do you use tools for colour adjusting? I would recommend trying: selective colour and colour balance, you can deepend and mix colours together in painting with these tools. I tried to make a fast example (bad one) about use of these tools by using your picture here, Experiment will tell if this is for you, idiot apathy uses these as well when making his enviroments, i think you can find example about use of these in his highquality videodemo here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...=56810&page=39

you're doing some excellent studies and dedication shows, its all about doing it and thats it.
I really like some of your pencils a lot, like the one in post 173 (the design on the cloth ain't 100%, you should make up a figure and dress it up with a costume from ref with different pose (you might already know http://www.hel-looks.com ) and the "underatree" one from post 170 (really really promising pencil...instead of just laying down gray as fast as you can to render, try and do somethign like you did on the bark of the tree and develop a shading techinque, be it hatching, crosshatching, make the hatching follow the form or not, this kind of stuff, that whats missing a bit imho, because the lines are really good and fluent once you're warmed up imho)
another one i found really interestign was the naga piece in post 166, love the idea, that would deserve some more love imho.
And just in case you wanted to try something different, experiment a bit with your work, not to find a new style, but to enrich your own.Try doing rendered characters on toned paper, try traditional painting, try mech vehicle design...dunno.
May i ask what ref you used for those female gesture studies in post 166 and 169? cause i'd need to do a ton of those as well asap, they look fun and useful.
keep sharing!

Trooper: You know, i was thinking just the same thing. So i'm planning to add some space to the right part of the canvas.
Krigbrann: thanks man, that's a great comment.
elf: Yes, i will!
Thegnoll: Thanks for the indepth critique. I know i can be a bit lazy with the pencil rendering and clothing folds, i'll have to watch out for that. Nice link btw. As for those gesture studies, i try to do those from my head. I find i often repeat myself that way though.
And now for some beastmen:

Nice balls :) haha maybe use soft and hard edges so the balls don't pop from the photo so much. Also do you know any way round my proportion problem (small heads, short feet) other than to just think about loomis proportions more? Keep it up.

really cool stuff here! your colour choices look brill, and I'm pretty fond of your rendering (and the redhaired, blue eyed lady a bit up the page. that's really striking). practice, practice, practice and just keep at it :)

Ahem, i'm at a crossroads in designing this pick and i would like you people to give me some input. Do i go with version 1, 2 or somewhere inbetween. Don't be shy now, i know you guys have an opinion. Let's hear it!

sexy! man youŽre really into the figure. rock on Id say!
bout the concept from above, I also prefer no. 1 because of the detail, but I think I like the pose of the 2nd one better = mix em…
hope youŽre doing fine

great studies on your lady's, I like the opaque brush work.
I think that version 2 reads better at the moment, but the pose looks a little bit stiff and it looks like he's falling backwards (...about to jump in vers. 1 ?). Design wise I prefer version 1 tough...
ps, I love your high key landscape painting on page 5 :D <1

Thanks for the input fellas, i decided to go with a mix of the two. Still lots of finetuning to it which i'm not in the mood for, but this is largely going to be the pic. I also have a few old designs i've been redrawing which are also far from where they should be. Any remarks on those? Yucky pose or something?

Just awesome stuff really. Those nude paintings look like a sweet exercise of picking up lighting skin. Which sites do you use for reference? Keep it up.
walnut
February 8th, 2009, 06:15 AM
SamC: Um, it's fairly easy to find that kind of reference if you dig around the net, but at kindgirls.com and some of the sites it links to you can occasionally find stuff that's a little, er, classier than most.
Here's a SP for weekly challenge and another, er, referenced pic.

Hello there for a while
Your digitals are getting more solid, so are the characters, the way they contain different shades in clothes. Stronger contrast make them more interesting.
Beautiful as ever

zoe: i've done some Bridgman studies before, but i agree that i could do more.
Nettle: Glad to see you back, i'm glad you can see improvement. Must be doing something right eh?
Trooper: Acrylics yes. I'd rather use oils, but i've no separate room for painting and they stink up the house so. I do have some oil SPs from a portrait course i've been following. (Learned the trick with the green there, you should try it) I'll post them when have them here at home.
And this is pretty much all i did for myself. Goofed off for a while there, too tired and too lazy. This is pretty much as far as it goes for this pic, it's almost gotten too stale already.

Big R-R-Respect for the amount and quality of sketches here, i really liked the dogfaced guy with gun and jumping girl!
All i can really critique is two things, the left leg of the dogman is little flat, should it be more foreshortened? dunno
Second thing is that then and then you do legs of your characters little airy, what i mean by this is that they stand on the ball of their foot (is this the correct word?) instead of keeping the foot completely on the ground.
Where to use this and where not is yours to choose, just observation

The girl with the ray gun is great, totally frazzetta like.. the dogfaced guy reminded me of El Incal...
but what i really like is the jumping massive fat guy n the bottom of the last page xD

Trooper: Thanks man, you know I love you too :)
Nettle: The feet thing was conscious, but i'm in two minds about it myself. about the dogman, i think there need to be more folds there, where the knee pushes against the cloth. Good call.
Quikenobi: Damn! Here i was thinking i could swipe from Jodorowsky and have nobody notice. Bad thinking there. And yeah, that girl is a hat off to ole' Frank and the whole pulp fiction thing.
WhiteC: thank you, the lines are that impressive? They could fool me.
And here's some more harvest from the challenge. The inking was done yesterday though, so that doesn't really count. Sorry about all the boobies people, it's the lecher in me making me do it.

You know, i really, really wait for you to master your digital rendering because what you have now is phenomenal core drawing skills developing there. I don't mean completely accurate and lifelike rendering of every detail but style, dynamism and imagination, the stuff that really counts.
I honestly think you should force yourself into reqular digital painting exercises, like doing little 20 minute paintings 3-7 times a week. reqular work no matter how little every day is key to success here... i cant really explain it why but it is really more effective than using 3 hours into one painting only one day a week.
you have it easy in a way, like coro said it once the drawing stuff underneath is the hard part and once yo get into it you will see that rendering is actually, really easy.
Ha, right now we are opposite mirrors, i struggle with bettering my core drawing skills while you have some work to be done with digital :)
well, end of rambling, sorry if i feel edgy with my suggestions but im just so taken by what you have done here that i feel i must say this to you. I feel that once you get seriously into digital we have to witness really interesting paintings here. over and out

March 15th, 2009, 04:48 AM
