i see me a samus there <3 and also, is that orianna somewhere there too? :P
and i love love the first illustration in the first of the last 2 updates, with the bodies dangling down! i dont really have any crits on that one except i wanna see it finished D:
and i do really love your gestures with lots of arms and legs but the blacker lines doesnt really have the same quality and feels rushed and ruins the picture a bit
and, more love, that little dragon/ogre/monster creature is ubercute :D

Whitevillage: Thanks!
Rumpenstiltzkin: Right on about the Samus, but which one is the Orianna? I never played the game you see. Or is that from somewhere else?
Here's an update on the tree piece. I have no real clue as to where this is going, and im' fearin for the worst. Any advice will receive a warm welcome.

it was the 4th picture form the bottom in your last post i thought was...
anywho :p
i like the update on the tree, to me it looks like a nice progress, not sure what i could add for useful crits :( just keep it up !

Looking allright direction, maybe you could add some more light into figure/circle around fiqure like with overlay layer. Other thing would be to make some contrast into the bodies you have hanging over there, some more lighter and some darker and also make some feets be lower than others, now they are in same line almost. Othervise keep sailing, never be afraid of the unknown waters, dark monster be hidden in there but unimaginable treasures as well! ooH!

Quike:Fuck, i've been meaning to mail you man! Gotta make work of that. But great to have you around again, and thanks for the comment!
Nettle: I've found the monster, but not the treasure yet ...
So, everyone, thank you for the advance, but i've hit the banks with the way i've been approaching this picture, and i strongly feel i should rewind and start over on the right foot with this pic. Therefore, here are some thumbs for the reboost, which should have more rythym and more of a general principle behind the execution. And be prettier overall too. I've got to add that i'd like to go more with a screenprint sort of, a little a la these guys (http://www.malleusdelic.com/) :

I am liking the composition on thumbnails A and F, especially A. Is that a scythe I spy her holding? Other than that, your still life studies are looking great, you're painting skills are getting much better, and I am loving the sketchbook work, in particular, these drawings (http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1279070&stc=1&d=1310829469).
The multiple limbs thing always looks cool, I've loved it ever since I saw Wesley Burt's sketchbooks. Keep going!

It depends on the question if she's a victim or a executioner (executioness?) First case, B and E; second case, A and D for me.
When are the epic children coming? :P
rumpenstiltzkin
July 24th, 2011, 08:40 PM
i really like B and E, there she could be either one, i kinda like not really knowing if she did it or not D:
in the rest she looks confident enough to be the executioner, well except D i guess..but i dont like her turning the back at us x) composition-wise i like all of them except C ...
aah, im not good at giving crits really, but i look forward to see the progress :D

July 25th, 2011, 05:35 AM
Now you are talking, hell yeah! That's the way to approach, my suqqestion goes for B and E.
I see the image that this girl is kind of demon/witch that lures more or less innocent people to her by her charm, so cute and inviting would be in my viewpoint way to go. The beef of the image is juxtaposing of all the bodies in the tree and girl that does not belong there, so i would make the contrast between these elements. it's like you first see the girl and the tree "that's nice" nd after that notise all the bodies in the tree and start having second thoughts.
Oh well, your choise but it's getting there, i can feel it :)

July 29th, 2011, 03:13 AM
Thanks all for your suggestions! I've had to overthink this for a second, but it's going to be B, i didn't want to stray from the original idea too much after all. Now the problem lies in the execution, the plan is to try some different approaches, digital as well analog. Or maybe just analog, we'll how things go from here. In the meantime, here's a barbarian lady i've been reworking:

Here's a follow-up on that one picture with the tree. I'm unsure of where to go from here with it, use a more graphic approach or more painterly. I'm not feeling confident i can manage either ...
rumpenstiltzkin

also, i wouldnt dare call the barbarians horn cheesy, she knows how to wear them :D

August 5th, 2011, 01:45 AM
That barbarian lady looks good, proper values there between backround and subject, also i like those controversial horns.
I think you could add sharper edges to that woman in illustration, and stronger shadows as well into her? maybe also paint more details around the woman in the tree, like bark and skulls. Detail & sharpness draws eye so maybe it could work, maybe.
I would go for more painterly for now, we can do if you want next challenge an illustrational approach to image...

August 22nd, 2011, 08:37 AM
Ace job with those still lives, you are doing great don't start having any doubts by now... Anyway by setting up a picture you mean, way to start digital painting, how to approach it, right?
personally, I think there is more or less two camps, and styles and approach mostly fall somewhere between these two camps:
Other is line, and other is value
Line approach means making a detailed drawing and using that finished drawing as a basis for painting values inside lines. example of this would be algenpfleger: http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/art/Sleeping-Beauty-Steps-245290658?q=gallery%3Aalgenpfleger%2F23487&qo=5
http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/art/War-Tutorial-205511893?q=gallery%3Aalgenpfleger%2F23487&qo=23
http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/art/Raiga-112859887?q=gallery%3Aalgenpfleger%2F23487&qo=68
http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=587589&stc=1&d=1234132847
Value approach means Starting from messy value/colour shapes, silhouettes that are plain areas of value without detail, and tightening up from there gradually, example would be daniel C:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7KrYZzIHHn8/Tki4M8ZqK1I/AAAAAAAABBA/Q1AcpsJcVDk/s1600/doodat.jpg
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SnARE6fMCls/TYbXNhE8fSI/AAAAAAAAA6c/Vjcthy2wyNI/s1600/Pathway.jpg
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kG-XA88XCxI/TOYDwPP6EDI/AAAAAAAAAzs/08ebIb2T3qY/s1600/scribble.jpg
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kG-XA88XCxI/TOhwNXZQXFI/AAAAAAAAAz8/gVHYKoEpXsE/s1600/scribble%2Bcopy.jpg
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kG-XA88XCxI/TM5j3Wtf2QI/AAAAAAAAAwU/bWwnAGshSBY/s1600/desert+poop+break+.jpg
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kG-XA88XCxI/SkMwE1DlluI/AAAAAAAAAdA/eADIZt1yqLw/s1600-h/Zombies+vs+Robots1+.jpg
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kG-XA88XCxI/SkQHjGPdrtI/AAAAAAAAAdI/mlftehmW2bQ/s1600-h/Zombies+vs+Robots2+.jpg
Which one are you, where do you fall between these two camps or do you have your own approach that is neither of these? I think artist should be able to do both, personally i fall more into value camp than lines, i feel you might be in lines, camp but i don't know. Maybe none of this was useful or "corrrect" but here i did anyway how one could approach setting picture, it's still life but it would be any image offcource. Make drawing correct first and put values in there or make valueshapes correct more or less and tighten up from there? ((or something between these two???)

Nettle, Velocity: So i've been thinking about your suggestions and when i take a good look at how i do things, the value route seems the most, erm, valuable to a messer like myself. Starting out in line and carefully planning the picture requires more patience than i could ever muster. Just these stills alone have been taking everything i've got just to get them finished. So, in any case, thanks for helping me out, great to know people care! Now, this pic here i did mostly with blocking in the values, and it went pretty well. Picking something with this many details is a masochists banquet however.

The two main characters in that last pic are looking slick. I'd recommend trying to keep your paper cleaner and actually scanning / slightly photoshopping the image quality though. :) While these are just sketches, it definitely makes them easier to look at if they're presented more cleanly, just makes the eye rest on the image a bit better.

p sage: Heh, season of the witch :) Bet your ass i be drawing some more witches this month; i'm an october boy after all. About quicksketches, i've done a fair share of dose, though it's been some months now since i had the chance for 'em. I think i'm reasonable good at that, but so far i haven't been able to transfer that skill when it comes to more finished or detailed sketches. I also have to add that a LOT of erasing was involved in the drawings from the last few posts. Guess that shows huh?
Nettle: I never did get round to finishing the last one right? But okay, load up some new thumbs in your thread, and i'll pick one, and you can pick one of mine, and i'll give it another go. Deal?
This was fun to do after a while (thanks to p sage for the suggestion ;) ) Not all of them are equally succesful, but i don't have anything else to show so there you go. Also, i have a strong feeling i've already drawn several of these before.

I'm enjoying those lines on the characters, but as far as the studies go, not all of the lymbic combinations are working for me perspectively. Perhaps try a sequence of studies side by side. As a study or composition that technique tends to look pretty flappity. Overall, waiting for the next big one.

Walnut, thanks so much for your kind words on my sketchbook. Your stuff, especially your figures, are excellent and full of life! And awesome work ethic too, something to aspire to for sure.
As for your question on what is from memory or ref, I'm gonna be a little long winded here. I really, to be honest, don't think those questions matter, as long as you're gaining the knowledge of form and structure. 90 to 95 percent of my work and sketches are done from ref, but not just copying a photo; I use ref for everything but I apply my own artistic filter to it and blah blah blah you know :D I feel, personally, that if I don't use reference I'm not improving or learning, I'm only spewing out what is in my brain, and I always wanna learn so I'm always using ref, especially from life.
I'm not ranting at you or anything, so please don't take it that way! I'm just sharing my personal opinions with you :)
Anyway, awesome studies and I can't wait for more! Those multi-limbs are very graceful
Edit: Also, OMG I JUST FOUND THAT SAME FFX TOY (the one on your previous page) IN MY BASEMENT LIKE 2 DAYS AGO! What a coincidence. Oh the memories

MacTire: Thanks!
rumpenstiltzkin: It's cause the love the female form so much myself :p
fernteixeira: No, i'm just in touch with my feminine side. I think ....
p sage: That one was for you, kid.
Nettle: I dunno. Chinese import?
Cout<mecha: Was thinking of doing that kind of study. With multilimbs it gets hard to see the forest through the trees sometimes. Also, i don't know what flappity means exactly, but i'm assuming not good?
Ixius: Thanks for posting back here! The reason for my question in your thread was because i felt strongly that a lot of observation had gone into your figure drawing. And that's always a good thing, whether from memory or direct reference doesn'st quite matter in the end. I'm impressed anyway. Don't be afraid to share your opinions either.
Which toy are you referring to? The iron giant? OR any of the other ones? They're fuckin' cool aren't they?
This the last batch of these multilimbs, i got carried away with them, but now it's time for other things. Hope you like some of them.

These are really cool man, the latest one is especially nice. Your designs are always really good and I love your quirky style.
The only thing thats bothers me is that it feels like youve tightened up a lot for these and the line work is so minimal and clean. Its loosing some of the energy of the your normal drawings. Not sure how it could be better though, maybe just use lines more, put some in in colour aswell.
Great stuff regardless, keep it up!

October 30th, 2011, 09:26 AM
PHATandy: You're hitting the nail on the head there. Trying to get a picture to look presentable i have to trade off energy for accuracy a LOT; and so far i haven't found a way to get both in a picture. Maybe work more analog and stop being a sissy about making marks? I dunno man. But i'm glad you think my pictures are quirky. Not sure what you mean by that but it sounds nice :)

Hullow again
I must agree with phatandy, that super sharp clean style might not suit for you in the long run,,, since you lose your lively lines and energy in those images (also value composition) (anyway, since i believe in relative-subjective school of art theories, you decide offcource in the end what is you and what is not, i only make my assumptions based on my own bullshit and empirical bullshit gathering :)
Anyway i might have some nice images for you, some japanese artist that use both colours and lines in their work that are bit sketchy but very delicious and finished looking (not incredibly detailed & clean but working as artwork, perfectly) I will post some of those here, maybe they will give you some ideas about different ways.

Wow, this is so different. Looks really good, great colours and a nice sort of storybook feel.

Great work though as always, keep it up!

image looks good, silhouettes read well and values are quite nice! maybei would have gone little crazier with girls clothing or decorations, not like very complicated but little fun details that adds the story, who the girl is and where he is going, little hints there and there, emblem, something hanging from her belt, black skeleton key?
Anyway i really like atmosphere and colour/style, it reads as children book illustration and i would buy a book that has that kind of illustrations on it! great job!

Umbravita: Yopu mean that? It's just a big butterfly really ...
Gnoll: Glad to see you still alive and kicking! Thanks for dropping by, always appreciated. Loved your update btw.
PHATAndy: The foreshortening not reading that well huh? Hmm' guess i'll have to look into that. Had a feeling something was slipping away from me there. I found going more extreme with the angle gives the pic some pizzaz though, maybe i should exaggerate with the other limbs then, like push them further back in the perspective?
Nettle: I agree the knight could do with some more personality, i wasn't thinking about that tbh. What makes it a girl for you if i may ask? And yeah, i was going for a more kid-oriented style, though i was shooting more for something platform-game related. I'd like to do some concepts for a game like that sometime ...
knut: Thanks dude, i like to keep things exciting with styles, glad you like it.
And since it's my police to always show AND tell, here's a space pilot thing based on an older thing.
PHATandy
February 13th, 2012, 03:25 PM
I think the problem with the foreshortening is, that the leg is the only thing that's really being effected by it. Like the monster isnt warping around and making itself big, or becoming much smaller than the swordsman. The door isnt getting really small into the distance or the bridge. The main thing also is the sword. Its pretty parallel, which id assume doesn't happen much in very foreshortened pictures.
I think you just have to consider everything when you think about foreshortening. or include more elements that get foreshortened, like other stuff around/close to the camera.
Anyways, I'm just rambling now. love the spaceman too. gj.

Qikalain: Thanks man, the animeishness showing through that much?
OK, hope this doesn't break the sketchbook. For the most part from reference. And by reference i mean ... well i think you guys get the drift. I wouldn't be the first around here right?

Yes! New stuff! Those thumbnail portraits from the 28th are awesome; so much variation and expression there. All your medieval-ish sketches are great, and I'd love to see more of them. Not that there's anything wrong with the girls :)

Metal Fingers: Fuck yeah, GIRLS!
PhatAndy: Thanks dude!
rumpenstiltzkin: thanks, er, dudette!
Davie: TBH the thumb portraits are nicked off Marko D, but they're a lot of fun to do. The mighty walnut recommends. And thanks for the comment!
p sage: Not a problem :)
poetry man: Always welcome.
This here's a bit of a mixed bag, i hope to do some nicer pages from an actual sketchbook somewhere this week. So stay tuned!

And i will stay bacon even if it kills me.
meticulous: Thanks for the links, even if i kind of already have a lot of those sets :bashful:
HunterKiller: Merci beaucoup pour ton comment!
OK, so no sketchbook pics today. The photos i took were horrible and the scanner's not big enough to scan the pages whole (and i'm too lazy for the scan twice and paste together thing). But i think i know a way,so somewhere this week maybe. In the meantime, some thumbs. First set are for a challenge with Nettle_Mountain. If you have a favorite, you're always welcome to share ...

I love the sketches on the previous page! I think some of the thumbnails can use a better value range though since a lot are sort of middle value and kind of look boring/flat because of it. You can also try using more colour temperature to push things forward or back in space.

Man, you put so much effort on your figures! so much hard work on your sketchbook, that's very nice i think, by the other hand those last thumbs you posted are incredible! my favorite from the first batch is the last one, the one which has a creature with ornaments and has people surrounding it, but i think they are all very interesting, it would be nice to see one of those thumbs as a finished piece, i think, looking forward for more!

Andrew Sonea: Thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to play with my values and hues more next time i do the thumbnail thing.
Gpozzeo: Glad you like the thumbs. I'm not making promises about finished work though :bashful:
Ok, let's hope CA doesn't bounce this post twice. Buncha pages from the current sketchbook, scans are crap since i should have scanned it in colour, but oh well. Hope you like some of these:

Damn I really love this latest update! How do you generate such good compositions and ideas? All your designs are also really fresh looking...do you have a general process or way of coming up with it? Do you study anything in particular?
