So I've been here for about a couple of months and have hardly posted any art. I’ve only just gotten back into the art habit and it feels really good, so I think it’s time I start a sketchbook.
To start are a couple of selfportraits I painted today with photoshop and a mirror.
10 minutes, to see if I could do it in ten.

hey there! nice start for a book. : D doing self-portraits like that is definitly good practice, just keep doing that and I'm sure you'll progress. Really try to anylize the shapes and form too, and get it as accurate as you can. The harder you stress those points the more your mind gets use to where they really lie, keep on rockin and a rollin. : D

Just posted and three comments! Yikes!
Thanks Death and Asoir, encouragement much appreciated!
Halos Chain, thanks for the ideas, I've been working on trying to be more accurate as i tend to just make a mess with the brushes and not get in close and work on details.

very well done cercie!
this is my favorite of the 3 for sure.
I would try working with bigger brushes and work down to softer smaller brushes for detailed areas.
keep it up and hurrah for peer pressure

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Gasp an update!
Alright start off with some throw-aways.
a fishy doodle.
http://www.noleftsock.com/old/oldies/digital/fishy0516.jpg/IMG]
What would have been a throne room for the EoW, but I was about a day late and a dollar short.
[IMG]http://www.noleftsock.com/old/oldies/digital/thronemay16.jpg
And a fat guy with no arms.
http://www.noleftsock.com/old/oldies/digital/fatman13.jpg
Things to work on: arms and hands.
Enjoy.

I very much approve, even tho you are married. :P
Something about the face looks a little off to me tho, but i cant put my finger on it.. maybe you should try flipping the image horisontally and see if the error pops out?

The selfportrait is looking gooooooooooood!!! Very nice! Totally! :teeth:
Slash mentioned face ... i think the perspective on the forehead might be off a bit .....
BlueMech
May 21st, 2006, 01:15 AM
Why is the fat guy smiling? He has no arms! And what a predicament he is in! Above him is the throne room, which he will havce trouble climbing with no arms, and if he cannot get there he cannot get the fish. And even if he could, he has no arms with which to catch the fish. And below him is a woman that he cannot even reach out and touch because he is armless!
The man has no reason to smile, I dissaprove.

hehe i like the fish and the fat guy - blood should be coming out of his arms and he should be smiling cuz he's a sick bad guy like on Sin City. haha!
i like the self portrait, but not just because i see your boobies... but beause you were bold enough and hot enough to post it. keep it up and make awesome pictures... draw your hubby. ;) and post moree!!! MORE MORE MORE! hehe

Hey hey hey!
Thanks for the encoragement and suggestions people.
Matt: thanks for the kind words, and here's a little more, I don't seem to sketch often enough.
Bluemech: That's a very linear way of looking at the pictures, I hadn't though of it as a story, but its funny. Yeah I guess he shouldn't be grinning with no arms.
Slash and Fooxoo, thanks for the ideas, I haven't been back to the self-portrait since then but maybe I should. I'm such a lazy artist.
An update after what nearly a month?! Sheesh I'm pathetic, and only three sort of good things to show for it.
A pressie for my husband, he wanted me to paint the badger (a stuffed animal), this is from life, he's still sitting next to me.
http://www.noleftsock.com/old/oldies/digital/littlebadger.jpg
This is my robot friend, kind of grew out of thin air. Still a bit messy but I've had enough of him.
http://www.noleftsock.com/old/oldies/digital/robotyjune15.jpg
And a very wip landscape I've been stuck on. I think I need to work on tonal value more, because when I desaturate it its very flat. Add it to my pile of flaws. =^)

Love the badger cercie, you did very well on that one. One thing that i noticed is that there is a lot of sketchy stuff here, not so much finished drawings or even attempts at a more "finished look". I suggest you move on from doodling and think more about what you want to draw, work on compositions. Like the wip landscape. More of that :)
Slash

VERY nice work on the badger dear! I'm impressed.
Here's some suggestions to what you can do to fix that robot a little. A pitcture is better than atleast 100 words, and thats more than i wanna type out when i can do a quick paintover instead. :D Put this one over the original in photoshop and turn the layer on and off to see my changes clearly:

Thanks for all the advice and support guys. I see what ya did Slashy, it did help him pop more, but I gave up on Mr. robot ages ago. =^\
james: I know what you mean, just doing anything is an accomplishment these days. ‘Mildly prolific’ I like it!
dirty_c: Thanks for the warm welcome. =^)
Johnny: I know what you mean about finishing things, though I think I better work on the actual drawing bit before I try anything else, the more I try the more I realize that I need to work on my basic technical skillz.
Xzacto: you’re a madman. ‘Nough said.
Groove: <3
Its been a little over a month so I better get to it. It’s sad how little I’ve done in a month…
Guess I post my paintings in my sketchbook cause I don't think they're good enough to go anywhere else. Meh.
Anywah, I got this catalogue in the mail full of quite terrible clothing that I would probably never wear, but it is good for drawing pretty ladies in craptastic poses. I broke out a cheap ballpoint pen and my homemade sketchbook and off I went.

Well it appears as though I haven't done shit for six months, and while that's not entirely true, I haven't been doing any concept art. What I have been doing is work for drawing and painting class, and as I photograph what I have done, here is the first in what is hopefully a long line of drawings/paintings.
http://www.noleftsock.com/old/oldies/oldwomannude.jpg
We had two live models in the two adjacent panting studios, I got the skinny older lady, which is quite intimidating if you've never oil painted from life before. I think this is 12 or 15 hours work.
That funny bit that makes the bottom half of the space heater look transparent is just a bad glare off the flash. But an interesting affect, nonetheless.
more to come!

I love your studies! and the oil painting came out great
if you ever do another fantastical landscape, the key thing to remember is NOT to work from your imagination, but to be inspired by reality =3 Go outside, look at your house inside and out, study architecture, study trees, look at rocks - and so on.

January 8th, 2007, 12:01 AM
NIce SB you've got going. Quite a variety from tonal studies to some poses. Keep the coming looking forward to more stuff!
Jove
January 8th, 2007, 08:34 PM
Nice stuff, Smellykitty hit her head on the nail. To do really good environments or characters from your mind you need to do real studies first or be inspired from a real place. Id suggest doing more full environment studies and keep doing the people studies and mix in more men, pretty much all your life studies are female right now. Keep us posted :)

the composition for your red circley landscape is very nice.
the teapot drawing is interesting. it would be great to see that idea developed further, and more attention applied to the form of the teapots. (i took a ceramics class last semester and made some teapots. maybe you could draw some of mine :P )
it seems you are able to do realism very well when given the right amount of time. (that live model painting looks awesome)
i think practicing more gesture drawings will help with your speedy accuracy. cant wait to see more.

Nice stuff! great start on your sketchbook!
I would suggest some perspective studies to compliment your life drawings. Also try to work with a full range of values in your pencil work and in your digital paintings.

So first one is a quick study of the little private road I live on. Very quaint. I was trying to figure out the perspective of the hill and seem to be failing. Practice practice, I guess.
Also, since I felt so dissatisfied with the perspective drawing I went to my safe place and came up with these beautiful badgers. I think its just what I wanted for my next linoleum print too.
