Introduction: (if you care to read about me)
Hello there,
I've been meaning to join this place for a while, but have been too scared... Anyway I guess I should give an introduction about myself:
My name is Pavel , I'm currently a university student down in Australia. I've never really took art seriously until I graduated school. So throughout my childhood I've been playing games, reading books (I love sci-fi) and making websites. It's been a bit more then 2 years since I've taken up drawing (started 2004), so I've been trying to work hard so I can catch up to everyone. I like drawing anime/manga and sci-fi stuff. I also like to do some life landscape drawings.
edit:
Well, I had some crap here written about how I'm gonna post my rough work here and such, but in fact I'll post most things here. I'll keep this bit, you see I come from deviantART - my deviantART gallery (http://rayk.deviantart.com)(yeah go and laugh) , but I'm not quite sure why I didn't join CA earlier. Who knows, I might have been a much better artist now.
so... little doodle I did in one of my classes.

that's about it for now (more coming soon), so another rough work:

Halos Chain: Thank you! Btw, I'm usually known as "rayk", but some one had that already here so I chose the second variant of "raykart".
bhanu: Haha yeah, after finishing school life has become so much better :D. Thank you for spotting typo >__< (I'm such a shocker with them). Thanks for your comment.
I'll try posting here as much as I can :D!
I will also probably reply in "batch" mode, so that I don't spam the forum with my sketchbook :|)

Guh time flyies... haven't had too many chances to do much work, but here i s sketch " bus stop: cloud shop". Been very inspired by - http://tksn.web.infoseek.co.jp/ (http://tksn.web.infoseek.co.jp/) empire boys work. I really love those enviromental art he has.
Well here is the sketch, gonna paint it when I get a chance (pardon the random japanese, it's more or less self learning practice):

Hey rayk!
Nice to see you updating finally!
Not bad, but the anatomy is looking a bit shaky in your pics, even accounting for the stylisation. Watch out for cutting the backs off skulls as well.
I'd love to see a few life studies and gestural scribbles thrown in here. Let's see some more updates eh? :)

August 11th, 2006, 03:47 AM
Ok more updates are here! :D:blahblah:
sue: Thanks! I'm trying to find some life drawing classes in my area currently, so I hope I'll have some life drawing to post soon.
Anyway here are some new stuff from me:
Title page for my sketchbook, have mixed views on it :^^;: Gonna colour with copics when I get the chance, might improve it a tad from it's current state.
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/sb_title_040806.jpg
Some environment stuff, the drawing kinda grew out of a house I was doodling in the upper left corner. Pretty happy with the result, might make a painting using a part of it at some later time.
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/kadoya_sktch_110806.jpg
That's about it for now, will try to get more stuff happening.

Your first image (sb banner) has to be my favorite. That last enviroment is looking good too, perhaps it needs a more assertive and clean linework, like the one you used in your weapon's ortho.
Keep 'em coming and welcome to the SSG!

Welcome to the SSG! I like your linework. Work on hands and realistic proportions - both will greatly improve your stylized work. Keep drawing and update often!

August 16th, 2006, 01:54 PM
Welcome to the SSG! I like the style (anime though it is). Try some full body shots and see where your anat stands at. I read about the anatomy dysfunctions and that can be taken care of with a few references from either Louis Gordon, Stephen R. Peck, or Loomis.
Again, welcome and try to update everyday...will help you alot

August 18th, 2006, 08:25 PM
Updates!!! w00t! I had a big assignment due in yesterday hence why I couldn't update earlier. Well to the new stuff!
I'm gonna put stuff in order of completion so from oldest to newest.
This is just random organic study, plus trying copics out in the moleskine (forgot to spray fixative before using them... so colours got mudled a bit). Spore inspired!
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/organics_page_160806.jpg
Ok, now some more enviro! This time with animu included :bashful: ! It's called morning dialogue cos the girl is talking with that bird thing (think rodent, mixed with bird that can swim) if you can see it (should have punched the values on the bird..) Some place as the other one. I'm kinda tired of sci-fi right now :(.
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/morning_dialogue_180806.jpg
guitarjames: cheers! I try to draw everyday now :).. anatomy is yeah... an issue
fedezz: Will work on having cleaner lines and more assertion! :yayca:
Fishspawn: hands, yeah those things annoy me!!!
Everyone else, thanks guys! Will try to keep this as update regularly as I can! Sometimes course work has other ideas on what my free time should be used on :(.
Cwn Annwn
August 18th, 2006, 11:39 PM
The second pic is cute, the first enviro I'll admit isn't convincing me. I think some studies of real landscapes and botanics will help. The plants just don't look...planty enough.
:(
Keep it up Rayk. ^^

Ok updates!!! Nothing really that ground braking, but it's better then nothing :) ne?
This is a quick drawing I did to show how to work in perspective for one of my friends artworks (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=75164), but I kinda put a funny spin on it which gave me a few ideas. Very rough, but I will keep working this idea up when I get time.
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/lollercaust_200806.jpg
Was doing one of my shape drawing warm up exercises last night, I only spend a few minutes on them usually (just drawing basic squares and such to get my arm flowing), but this one kinda grew and ended up investing about an hour or so in it (and going to bed late when I had a 5am get up  ).
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/fire_robot_220806.jpg
Well that's about it, I have another drawing which I started in my moleskine so I might be able to finish it soon. Oh shameless plug, but please welcome my friend who's joined up CA!! - Shakken's SB (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=75476)

Yeah, more updates to my スケッチュー ブック ロル~! :meow:
*ahem* anyway it's more my bad stuff update then good, but bad art is part of learning too!!!
guitarjames: :) That's that highest the HB values will go on that paper, I happened to make a mistake of buying really cheapo paper album so now I'm trying to use it up by doodling and warming up on it. (the paper sucks so much that the HB looks like H or 2H pencil).
Fishspawn, Punchy: Thanks guys, will try to keep the artworking flowing in. But some times it might not be that great as today one... :nohope:
Ok time for the sketches!
This is a doodle I did today while watching a feng dvd "quick sketching" (love my uni library), nothing much but thought it kinda had a cool idea there.
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/junk_ship_240806.jpg
I've started on this one few days ago, but ended up ruining it... I ended up playing around with different techniques and approaches to much, so I should prob hold on to going so heavy. Well good learning experience.
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/tree_temple_230806.jpg
I got around to colouring my moleskine sketchbook title page! But while I think it looks better now, I somehow ended up totally ruining the eyes :( . I also wish I lived in asia so I didn't need to import copic sketch markers from usa!!! くそ! Lol I love how awfully wrong the arm is :D
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/sb_iro_title_240806.jpg
Well that's all for now, hope I can make some better stuff to post next time, sorry if I dissapointed anyone... I tried my best, but not always you get the results that you want.

August 24th, 2006, 05:08 AM
ohh you have a really cute style... what i'm seeing a lot of though, is just bust shots of anime characters. i know maybe it's not the style you're going for, but a bit more lifedrawing would do much good. some finished digital stuff also?
take care

August 24th, 2006, 11:17 AM
hey there again!
Nice to see you updating again so soon.
On the last batch - the coloured anime girl has a few anatomical issues. Her arm holding the paintbrush looks both bowed and too long and her eyes are a bit off.
Also with your machines, adding a bit more value to the pic will help give them form and weight.
Yes I know I'm repeating myself and every one else, but a life study or few would be awesome too.
Good to see you working hard though.

August 24th, 2006, 11:50 PM
Put me on the list of rayk-should-life-draw-ites. Ahem. I think you could fix that middle drawing by darkening up some parts really black, if you wanted to. Keep up the drawing, good or bad it will help you improve!

August 27th, 2006, 06:38 AM
Ok, some minor updates! (Mainly cos I wanted to show my nude from ref drawing).
Cwn Annwn: Yeah, I realised how broken that artwork was after I applied fixative to it. :dead: I think the colour helped it a tiny bit.
tie, Fishspawn, Cwn Annwn: Life drawing is coming on 7th!! If all goes to plan :D!!!
Ok now for some art!
This is a doodle I did, I kinda like some of the ideas going on there. The stick figure in the upper left is gonna be a charecter drawing I'm gonna do soon. Oh and I've been working on drawing straight lines freehand! :D
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/doodles_270806.jpg
This is a photo of my drawing desk, I mainly use it for copics, sculping and anything else that requires lots of room. Otherwise I draw and doodle infront of my comp.
Well that's all for now, been trying to draw everyday! Even if it's a 2cm x 2cm drawing.

August 27th, 2006, 01:17 PM
Cool update. The womans head looks a little too big. I also think the shadows on her stomach/shoulders are too much contrast, maybe try toning the rest of the skin and pulling some highlights out? Good page of sketches. I should really set up a space to draw like that, for doing still lifes, but i'm too lazy :/. Great to see you drawing every day and updating almost that often, its a good practice to get into!

August 28th, 2006, 09:10 AM
Hey rayk, good to see you updating regularly.
The sketch of the woman looks a little odd. Her legs look like sticks without any muscle definition and she looks a little bit stiff. Watch out for the wrists and arm proportions too.

Happy news everyone, I went to life drawing yesterday :D! It was untutored, but still very good. It's weekly, so I will be going there every week hopefully :meow: . I've comped together my better stuff.
These were 5 min poses I think.

You have some really nice sense of color and figure.
Your anatomy is great, but you need to get away from the biged eyed anime faces.
Thats one of my biggest problems was I was drawing anime so long all my faces started to look the same!
Really good work and keep it up! Nice to see an amateur in there too, I know I hate twisting all that wire but its worth it.

Great to see you life drawing. If it's not interesting, make it interesting! Take the model's body, make it proportionate and get the pose right, and then make it into an alien or a monster or something, and keep looking at the model to make sure you're basics aren't going off track. You can also use the model to help shade it. There's nothing saying you have to go for complete realistic drafting. Keep up the good work.

アプデット 時間 だ!
Ok was gonna update with more, but I have assignment to work on.
Chiko: Why do I need to get away from biged eyed anime faces? I draw realistic life drawing so I don't see myself running into problems. I'll try varying the types of characters I draw however.
ender.saka: Ahh thank you, I know not everyone is a fan of anime/manga style. But that's where I get my inspiration from :).
Fishspaw: Interesting ideas there!!! :D Shall try something this wednesday!
Well FIRST of all PLEASE WATCH my motion graphics poromo!!!
--> Brush Samurai poromo ( 5mb ) (http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/brush_samurai_lowq.mov) <--
It's in Quicktime, so please install Quicktime Alternative (http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm) if you don't have it.
Well first up is the drawing I used in it. I'm happy of it because of the time it took me to do it (twice as fast as it would normally take me!!!)

This is colour version from animation:
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/brush_samurai_anim_310806.jpg
Decided to take that further and made a paint up! (roughly took me an hour or so, also a great surprise in my speed improvement!)

some great stuff here. i like your use of colors on some of these pieces. i see you have some of the same problems that i do and that's not drawing enough action/non-stiff poses. try adding some foreshortening to your figures so that they're in more interesting gestures. hope that helps =)

Yo. Awesome character design. I didn't get to watch the video yet, but i'm looking forward to it :) I noticed your reply to Chiko, and i think that your anime experience is influencing your life drawing and making it more cartoonish, even if you aren't aware of it. I know i have the same problem, and the only way i can figure to fix it is by doing proportion studies alot. Anyway, great char design, and i look forward to more life drawing :)

That environment piece you posted on the 11th of Aug is great! Lot of nice sketches in here.
I watched the video. Very nice. I really like the part where all the plants are coming up. My only crit on the video would be that some of the camera movements feel too mechanical. The art is so organic, it would feel nice if the camera mon=vements were smoother.
I'll be checking back.

Ok, I always have a hectic first half of the week so I don't update for a few days. Well decided to update now, to get some of my drawings up (while I finish others).
character: Yeah, gotta force myself to make more dynamic figures. Keep forgetting, thanks for pointing it out!
Fishspawn: Ahh I see, gotta watch it then.
crazy3dman: Yeah I get the really stiff mechanical feel too.
tensai: Thanks tensai, I wonted to write " corner shop ", kado ya. Those aren't the charecters I should have used?
JERI: I love his work to death, it's really amazing. It feels like a trip down some really cool and crazy world when I look at his work.
Ok now some art, Wednesday is life drawing so here are some of the drawings form it.
Few quick poses for warm up:
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/lifedrw_rough_060906.jpg
These were the longer poses, some of those were 15 min and some 30... I was feeling tired so I did some "fun with life drawing" as Fishspawn suggested.

Yo, nice update. The limbs look a little strange on that guy, but he may have just been a strange looking guy. One thing i notice is that you tend to make all of your shadows hard shadows. There are lots of different types of shadows, like cast shadows, core shadows, reflected light, etc. It would do you well to research them a little and try and work that knowledge into you stuff, i think it would add a new level of realism. Great enviro, keep up the good work.

Good to see life studies as well as the anime influence. I like the little Feng DVD sketches too. I guess one crit would be to shade for overall volume, not just individual little details. Simplify it. Here's are some examlples of what I mean http://community.conceptart.org/gallery/I/2005/01/01/13264.jpg and
http://community.conceptart.org/gallery/I/2005/01/01/13266.jpg. Get the overall masses to have volume, then add detail. Hope that helps.

Blue Severin's advice is spot on.
I dig the two figures from the top in the second sheet of gestures. They have a nice stylized feel to them. Schiele keeps coming to my mind.
Keep doing those anatomical studies, what you learn from them is priceless.
Cheers!

Hey rayk. I'm not usually in support of rulers, but you may want to use one to help straigthen the lines on your enviro. The main problem i see is that everything leans to the left, i don't know if it was intended or not but it looks odd. Only problem with the girl is the breasts, they are wrong in a lot of ways >.> Anyway, keep up the good work, i look forward to more.

TheChosenOne_RHP: Thanks, I really love working with colour - I just don't get many chances to do it (stupid uni work  ).
Fishspawn: Yeah, I was thinking exact same thing! I think for main perspective lines and construction I should use a ruler and then everything else I will be fine to freehand. You should have seen the version before that, it was leaning left even more ahahaha.
Nyako: :)
Ok life drawing yesterday, I've been really tired mentally as of late. It gets really depressing when what you study is at large irrelevant to your chosen path.
Well no excuses for the quality, I still put my best effort into this but it turned out rather pathetic.
Warm ups and 5 - 15 min poses I think

September 14th, 2006, 10:16 AM
Hey there, dropped by accidentally but good thing I did ^^.
Nice work, can see you're growing bit by bit.
Your environments are the stronger pieces in my opinion. Only thing I can say is watch out for characters.
In both the environment + girl in front of window there seem to be some minor problem. The first girl looks like she's banged her head against the roof. The second girl's lower body looks like it's inside the wall. Think that's because she hangs out of the window but not bending her body.
Maybe I sound a bit harsh, but just trying to crit :P
Btw, I'm a anime lover hehe. Good to see other anime artists. Keep it up !

September 15th, 2006, 01:36 AM
Hey, rayk, nice update. I completely understand the slump thing (in fact most of the time i feel that way!), best thing to do is just to keep drawing. by building onto the habit you strenthen yourself for when you feel more like it. Those figures are looking better. I'd reccomend trying them in charcoal. I find it to be great for flowy gestures and good for tight rendering on longer poses. Keep fighting the fight, we're rooting for you :)

Yep, definitely showing improvements in the shading deparment, specially here (http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/lifedrw_rough_130906.jpg). And don't worry, slumps are usually on the mind of the artist. You just need to look at your work with fresh eyes, do what severin says, and then get back to it. This is all about having fun. When you're not having fun, no matter how good an artist you are, it's worthless. So keep it up, you're doing great, believe me.

Blue Severin: Yeah, just life grinded my brain away.
KaWaii: Ahh thanks, I should really watch for sloppy mistakes like that.
Fishspawn: Yep, I'm powering through no matter what I feel like! I was thinking of trying black pencil next time to get some values happening.
fedezz: Thanks fedz :).
Ok well, update. I feel that slump has gone (I just stopped caring about it and continued drawing no matter what). So some new things!
Some enviro thumbnails, some are done with refs. More for building some ideas.
http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/thumbnails_170906.jpg
I've been experimenting with using a black pencil. So this is the result!!! For some reason I associate dragons with wisdom and long life rather then the scary monsters most people draw them as. Hence why this is titled "Forest wisdom" :D

I feel my speed is getting better, so will try keeping pace :yayca: ! I love you guys, I really appreciate all the help :D .

Excellent, glad you're back into it. Thumbnails are nice. I love the dragon, but i have a couple of suggestions. I'd make the enviro dark next to where the sun is hitting him, to make him pop out more and define what's him and whats the enviro. And, uh, i'd give him wings, 'cause wings are friggin sweet. ;) Keep up the good work, i look forward to more updates from you! Half of our ssg doesn't update anymore so we have to make up for it!

The lines on those thumbs look a lot more confident than in earlier posts, wich was one of my first crits on your sb. And perspective looks solid, even at that size.
I like the dragon, its design and pose, and the angular construction is fabulous. However the leaves and nature sorrounding him are bothering me, mostly because it's made of small unrelated bits just floating around kinda chaotic. Try simplifying it, relating the parts with each other and to the figure.
Great update, keep it up!

Sweet, more enviroments and cityscapes. I know these are probably primarly drawing practice for you, meaning accurate shapes and lines but you might think about working on translating a bit of depth too, a good way to do this is to go thicker with your lines on things that are closer to the foreground and things that have sharp edges. Let the foreground one override though. Just a thought.
Also don't be afraid to take them into photoshop and do some quick value comps on them, it can be pretty fun and pretty good practice to do so. You might start with the sky in some of these - think that the sky will probably be brighter than anything that does not have a heavy dosage of sunlight on it.
Cheers dude, thanks for dropping by my sketchbook.

Your art lacks imagination. It’s far too basic.
Try and get some decent ideas instead of just working off straight up repetition of the same style you see everywhere.
If you had any originality you wouldn’t blindly follow basic manga character cleches. Anyone can do that.
Be original, and you’ll find it pays off in the big world.
guitarjames: Oh yeah, I'm trying to find a penciling style that suits me. So I've been trying different things.
Ragathol: Ahh thanks. I'm always looking for crits :)
Fishspawn: Ok, I've been working on that.
Idiot Apathy: Colours... I'm gonna work with them this week hopefully.

Oooh fun update. Loving the enviro. Again watch the hands on your other one. This is just preference, but i think the wings would be cooler if they were more curvacious and stylized (ala Cardcaptor Sakura).
That quote you put in your post is what a lot of people here have been trying to communicate - striving for realism is the best way to create your own unique style, which i'm sure will still have some anime influence. The key is that life drawing, so break yourself and keep at it!

JavKiller: Ahh cheers. Too many sci-fi books during my childhood ;) ! (Way Station by Clifford D. Simak I highly recommend!)
guitarjames: Yeah trying to work on the value thing with pencil, I'm still far from something I'd be happy with but I'm starting to find certain things that I like.
fedezz: Thanks, I'm redrawing the whole thing (Kaoru gave some thorough feedback on it (it was meant for her too... :^^;: can't even draw a decent gift).
Fishspawn: I see, I get mixed opinions from people - some say just keep working on everything and never abandon one part of your art, others are being anti anime. With the wings, I wanted to do something half half so it looks a bit more original (should refine the design).

Hey rayk, nice drawings. I don't really think you have to give up anime entirely, but from my own experience trying to ditch it, the habits hang on hard and cement themselves in everything you do, so i'm just trying to go without until i can nail stuff realistically. Then i might throw some back in.
I actually like the gestures more, because you didn't overdo any lines/shadows. In the 30 min poses you have lost your line quality (some of it anyway) and you have some shadows that are just too dark.
You're definately getting better at proportions. Keep up the drawing.
guitarjames
September 28th, 2006, 01:57 PM
oi, you:P
well i agree with fishspawn.and the 30 min ones look strange , the left has a weird neck ,and the heads to small and the right ones armpit is going to far up.
Maybe your being too careful ,sooo go and do somthing crazy with paint or pencils or what ever , and post th results (eve nif you dont like them)
armando
September 28th, 2006, 02:41 PM
Judging from those 30 minute poses you need to work on your observation skills. Try a few studies where you're working strictly in 2D, that is taking proportional measurements, strive to describe the individuality of the thing you see. You're building up your life drawings from an anime base. The truth is we build up everything we draw from a prior knowledge base, we run into trouble when that prior knowledge is incomplete, wrong, or unsuitable to what we're trying to draw. The most versatile things to build with are the basic forms, use a drawing method not stylyzation. Do some drawings using only boxes in perspective, same with spheres. Now try life drawing building from those forms. Drawing is searching for marks that are equivalent to visual perception, best advice I can think of is to read the book Art and Illusion by E.H Gombrich.

Fishspawn: Ok I see, I'm really hating the 30 min ones - what I think happened is my speed got faster so I ended up over working them. Thanks :).
guitarjames: yeah, I think your right - just got too overboard shading.
armando: Ooh thanks, I think next time I will spend the 30 mins concentrating on nailing those proportions.
Ok! Well coloured the gift drawing (the fixed lineart is the result of kaoru pointing out them mistakes and and giving me feedback - kinda embarrassing since it was a gift for her...).

I like the enviro studies. Some crits: seeing through the trees is cool and all, but it ruins your perspective because it makes the horizon too low for the ground plane. If that's a light source, then make the surroundings darker, and pick up light from the glow, not the ambient light. The girls left leg has no thigh, her ankle passes through her right knee. An easy way to fix it would be to take the right knee level and swing it out. Also, Use contraposto to make it look like she is walking. girls never walk straight up and down, their hips don't allow for it.
Fishspawn
October 9th, 2006, 07:15 PM
Oooh that enviro is much better. I agree with severin, darks would help a lot. A foreground element would also establish perspective - how big is that place? I like it much more, it inspires the imagination.

Fishspawn: Yeah, needs a fore ground. But it's more or a less a concept idea hence maybe that's why I went a bit slack  I put those 2 figures there to give some sence of scale... I guess you can't really tell that they are figures.
Hyptosis: I've really been getting into greens as of late.. really weird cos I'm a blue person by nature.

That last thumb is sweet. Contraposto is a classical theory that the human body looks better when the weight is not rested evenly. Look at Michelangelo's David for a good example, but as far as women go, they roll their hips when they walk, and I think your piece would lend itself well to using this. The hips and shoulders tilt in different directions in contra posto. Here's my hastily sketched example.

Yo rayk. Life drawings are definately improving. I love the one at the top of the 2nd page, its very... nice. On the shorter ones, i'd like to see gestures instead of stick figures. Feel out the form without lifting your pencil/pen and be loose and rhythmic. It will help you warm up better as well as help you learn rhythm and where energy is distributed.
Ehh that didn't make much sense.. but try some gestures, and what blue severin said wins. Keep it up.

Ok an enviro tonight. Spent a little more on the colour. Used an artwork from legend of mana as a starting idea ref, then just branched out my own way.

You can go and blame Hyptosis for that. I had totally forgotten about legend of mana, turns out that's been influencing my work on a subconscious level!

Oooh, nice enviros. I agree with james that the top one could use a little more variety. Legend of mana did have really nice artwork. On the desert one, i'd reccomend using bigger brushes, its kind of choppy. Also, like fedezz taught me, play around with some overlay/color layers, they can help establish atmosphere really quick, which is fun to do in speedpaints. At any rate, your enviros are rocking. How about some anatomy studies? Keep up the dailies.

The green enviro is cool. So is the last one, I really dig the palette. Try some structural brushes (m@'s and barontieri's are cool) to define shapes quickly in early stages, i.e. those dudes you mentioned lay a couple of predefined shapes and then work from there to describe volume instead of painting every little part with a round brush. Also, hit the sharpen filter a couple of times (maybe fade it the second time) once you cropped the image to its final size, that really makes a difference.
Ohh, and I looove this one (http://www.artbypavel.com/sketchbook/along_path_101006.jpg).

Yo. Whatever enviro you put her in, don't do it in the dead center like that. In the sketch she was on one side of the page - it was much more interesting. Putting her in the middle flattens the enviro i think. Keep up the good work.
fedezz
October 23rd, 2006, 10:26 PM
That last enviro w/character is looking good. It's nice to see you integrating figures in your enviros. Agree with fish about the placement of the figure, try placing it on the left line of the thirds, and maybe raising a little so his head falls on the intersection of that leftmost vertical third and the upper horizontal third. Well, that's supposed to be one of the most active spot of a composition, or so they say :P
Keep it up!
Blue Severin
October 24th, 2006, 02:15 AM
I guess you may have never been to NYC living in Australia, but the narrow areas channel wind and actually make the gusts worse, so that could work. you'd just have to show debris being blown too, as no city is ever clean enough to not shoot stuff all over from the wind. As far as having the figure in the middle, if that's what you really want, then try to change the background so she's not in the the symmetrical center of the enviro. The negative space around her is roughly equal on both sides. It's tough to make a central comp work, but trying can make an interesting piece. Or you could just move the figure and no more issue. Looking good.
paberu
October 24th, 2006, 07:39 AM
guitarjames: Haha that would be out of place too.
Fishspawn: Hmm yeah, center not best idea - that was only an idea rough.

Blue Severin: I'll play around with that enviro and try to make a central comp work. Think would be a good exercise.
Well this is my second idea (I have a third but it's too boring), I think I will stick with this one - heavy inspiration from empire boy XD. I'll use the other one for something else, or maybe alternative version.

Hey rayk, those roughs do keep getting better. I think on the longer poses you are trying to be too "finished". As fedezz told me, after you get the proportions and values in, then you add in the loose gestural lines to your finished pieces. Fishspawn: Ok, yeah bit more contrast.
fedezz: Thanks man!
guitarjames: Ok will keep that in mind.
Punchy: Gotta disappoint you, not many sketches were done.
Listing: Ok I'll do my best.
Ok well I'm back, stayed there a bit longer. Had an amazing time! (been back for 2 days now, just first day was dead and second day had work which didn't help me recover). I did draw a tiny bit, but I will only post a few things up as others are personal/no interest for you guys. I plan on going back there in jan, so I will draw more then.
Well to get the ball rolling again ...

I like the way you do your enviros! I think I'll start doing some in my sketchbook too. I know all the rules...surprised that I never used them. :P
btw...that's a good idea to create like five WIPS and then start completing them. I think I'm going to try and create five WIP's, then choose the one or two that I like most and just do those so I can get into the creative stage again.
Something abuot that train sketch is realyl elegant.

Well to keep things different; something out of my moleskine when I went to sydney.
First one drawn while I was in the bus (from mem), the second one too (but from life) and so is the third one. I had to take a bus to some town in middle of nowhere, from there I was on train to sydney (This is how the overnight service to sydney runs, the one from syd to bris is normal with train whole way).

November 17th, 2006, 08:02 AM
guitarjames:Yep it's like a walk way on a pond. I wasn't really paying attention to composition and etc, just had a funny idea that I coloured.
Well made the top right thumb into a semi finished ilo/speedpaint. Kaoru did a remix in the end of it which came out with a warmer feel (I punched the value on the space ships after it).
So your fun task can be to pick which one you like more. Aka cold or warm! :yayca:

I like the mist tribe but it seems flat. I LOVE those thumbnails. I think the second version looks better because it has higher contrast at the focal point. Might try shifting the focus more to one side and adding in a "pathway" to it so there's more to look at. Keep up the good work.

Ok coloured version of last nights drawing, different to what I usually do. I think I hit a block/slup or something (+ I'm feeling sick) so I did many attempts to colour this, Kaoru preferred these colours so I went ahead with this palette.
I think I need to study tree + grass colours more. Oh well, can't stop! Gotta keep drawing through blocks/slumps/whatever.

Hrm hrm, block and stumpage? What's the problem chief? Colorwise your palette of choice seems to be a more subdued pastel or watercolor sort - you're using fairly low saturation colors and basically adding in white as you add light. I like it but it is perhaps stylistic at times and of course as with everything not always the case in different situations. Try going towards 100 saturation and 100 brightness as you add light and see how you like that, when you can go no higher in the color palette window then go towards white or hue shift to a 'brighter' hue. Like orange to yellow.
Anyways, hope that helps. This last enviro is nice mate! Small crit; the branch on the right creates a bit of a tangent with the horizon. Overlap is great for depth though so it shouldn't move too much.
Cheers!

Hi ,Kayk,i like your drawing.
It's more like Japanese' style.so lovely.
I think some of these come form your life. And some of these come form game?
I like the drawing "white""dream""wind"(白梦风).The feeling of it is comfortable, natural, beautiful. But i am curious about the name. Why you call it "w""d""w".It is something you like?
Fishspawn
November 19th, 2006, 02:50 PM
Hey Rayk. The colors don't look bad, they just look cartoony, which may not be what you're going for. Midtones should be the most saturated, with less saturation at the darkest points and lightest points. Also, work on your atmosphere a little more, its hard to tell if the grass is far off/ far below, or right next to the tree. Also, more dynamic lighting wouldn't hurt. Keep up the drawing and get through that slump!

Blue Severin
November 19th, 2006, 10:37 PM
push the values and it'll look less cartoony. Right now you have a colored drawing, not a digital painting that gives a sense of depth. Those light parts on the tree should glow compared to the background, not be the same value. The foreground's darks need to be the darkest (black, usually with a bit of a tint for better temperature depth). The Black frame shows as the darkets thing in the painting. Crits get more specific and evil sounding as you get better, so keep up the good work.

Idiot Apathy, Fishspawn, guitarjames, Blue Severin: Wow guys, thanks for the support and help!!! I'll use your advice and wisdom next time I colour!
Kenzo: I guess those three words is what I felt when I drew it, white dream wind as in a soft breeze with pure dream like feeling. I sometimes feel that breeze during sunrise. Most of the stuff in this sketchbook is out of my head and some from life and photos.

Good thumbs as always, and that new enviro is killer. Much much better. Don't be afraid to use a few textured brushes in some areas to make it look more dirty or rocky. Also, i can't really tell what the white shapes are, they could be clouds or they could be aliens... maybe i'm just not looking right. Keep up the good work.

Rayk homey, don't stay away from doing anything - traditional training or not. You need to constantly branch out and experiment. Go nuts. If you stuck to the same path everyday in life you would see the same sights over and over.
Using a photo texture might get you started and help you see things better.
Anyways, last few paints have been real nice.

Hey Rayk. I was once told that when drawing enviros your pencil strokes should reflect the texture and energy of what you were drawing. So, for example on those ferns you would use the side of the pencil and make one stroke that goes up and then droops a little. And for different kinds of leaves you make different pencil strokes. Just an idea to try. Keep up the awesome pace!
