Beautiful work. It's interesting to see the compositional changes you made along the way.

Hahah! I love the chaos of the first paint, but the cleanliness of the finished. Very nice colors and stuff.

Only nag is that I think my eye is competing between the Figure and the ship... but both are very nice, maybe just blur out the ship a bit more?

I like the indication of rubble and ruins that these guys are walking through in the speed paint. The dust is so much thicker as well, which you can tell by how opaque the sunbeams look pouring through the skeletal frames of the buildings. . The finish is technically flawless but it's definitely a different storytelling angle. In the rough, the ship looks like it's accompanying the platoon on a search and rescue, or search and destroy mission. In the finish, the men look like they're escort guards near a landing pad for the ship and they're just on a routine shift.
Both are beautiful works of mastery, they're just very different from one another.... I'm not sure if you wanted to maintain a consistency between the two or if the changes were deliberate.

Hi,

I saw your post on Sijun ! Very nice work !
I'am agree with PixelDragon...i like the chaos and natural artifact about the first picture !!
Just one ''crits'' ... the fact of to polish change your first feeling (a little)...!
Well, i like your post !!

gorgeous work! i also like the composition of the first one better... the ship and the guy compete in size and importance in the second one... i like how the two figures in the first one balance out the weight of the ship and the hint of more troops in the bg...

just my two cents, theyre both cool!

Hey there! man this is beautiful man! gorgeous! I also like the composition and look and..feel of the first one as opposed to the second, but its not bad by a long shot. : D the refinments and details you added are gorgeous, wish i was that skilled with painer!

keep rockin and a rollin dudee!

Theyre both cool although I prefer the rough. I was digging the rubble and search and rescue feel of it-or perhaps bounty hunters. The second one has a more mundane "waiting" feel. Painted REally well, just not as dynamic IMO

The second one is cleaner, but also less loose in lines.
Yep like the first one more, because it can "breathe" so much more through the glass of your screen. Try to catch this more in your finished paintings.

Blaise : thanks!

Pixeldragoon : thanks. you're right. As Andrew Ley cleverly suggested in mysketchbook thread, I should have made the character look at the ship.

Dutton : thanks man. Yes, my intent wasn't to make a finished pic of the exact same scene. Just continue further working on the base of the speed. Definitely not a professional approach :p

rainart : thank you! yes it changed, but it was (kinda) intentional.

Layil: thanks for your input.

Halos Chain : thanks!

perineum : yes I switched mood. I definitely wanted to have that clean enviro style in the end.

Alday.J : merci :)

Infinit : thanks

Loga4 : cheers!

MIKECORRIERO : thanks. Hehe there actually are 2 other characters but they are just mere brushstrokes :D can someone spot them :D but yeah you're right more characters would have put more depth.

Skureal : hehe that's definitely a hard thing to get. I'm always stuggling with that argh. Not having a more detailed pic become static!

oh wow, that is just magical, it will take me like years to become as good as you yet -bangs head on the table grrrr, but this is looking really sweet and lovely !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My problem is that when I start working on speed paintings they start to suck very easily but you just seem to know what you are doing

Emrah : thanks my friend :) hey where are you? don't see you around msn anymore those days.

Egets : thanks you :)

Mr.Vision : thanks!

SHADOW X : Er.. okay. I guess, thank you.*

here's the 3D base I used : not much more than a few vanishing points would have done, but well, it's quicker in 3D.

real good. i had a doubt about using 3d program to do lines, but now it looks like a great idea. great job. like it very much.

m@. - I thought your speedpaint was awesome - but the final image's even better:P
Anywayz - which program did you use for the 3D basis?

Hey M@

I think that the initial speedpaint is the better painting... The initial speedpaint is much more dynamic, the sense of scale is much more established... all of which makes the composition much better

The speedy is more dynamic because the spaceship is not exactly parallel with the ground... because it is slightly off kilter it has much more implied motion. the whole piece has much softer edges, which also implies and allows for motion throughout the piece... the hard edges actually kill some of the motion and dynamicism. The atmospheric perspective is also sexier, the buildings in the middle ground are effected by the atmosphere, and in the tightened version you lose that atmosphere. In fact, you lose some of the nice value relationships as well, especially on the tunnel-thing in the lower right part of the composition.

The sense of scale is much better established because there is more than one figure. Just one figure doesn't really help our sense of scale because we can't see that figure receeding into space. there is this weird illusion in the second one that the ship is miniature or the man is super big... having more figures... like you have in the speedie would solve that problem.... but if you want to do more than just solve the problem, you should repeat that ship or similar ships throughout the scene. If you really want to establish scale, do that... and make sure to apply atmospheric perspective to the ships as they recede into space.

the only real improvements I see in the tightened up version are the solidity of the ship and the clarity of the ground plane. I think that the figure closest to us looks better in the speedy... there are a few reasons for this. The lighting on the figure in the tighter version does not make sense. The cool middle tones you added actually kill the lighting. He looks to me to be silouhetted and because he is mostly in shadow, the values should all stay in the 7,8,9 range... it looks to me like you pushed it too far and got into the 5,6's. that is just a simple matter of knocking some of the values back..

Anyway, I really love seeing your speedpaintings around.. so keep on keepin on. However, next time you take a speedy to a more detailed level, try not to loose some of the nice stuff you have going on in the speedy just to justify more "detail."

Well I'm glad you decided to continue working on it, I love both pieces.. they both have their charms but at the end of the day the second one really stands out. Great work.

I was like hmm speed paint by M@, this is going to own...
I was right.
I've got to get my hands on some 3d modelling skills. Looks very handy for setting up large scenes.
Yeah Mullins always likes his sketches better then the final rendered pieces. I agree with Mr. Blonde. But i love the final piece too.
You use any lighting refs? Or do you splash colour together until it works?

Sarcophagus : thanks

Scoobydoo_lt : thanks. Yeah it definitely saves time.

TidalWave : thanks, I used 3dsmax. But you can do that with free programs like blender , too.

Mr.Blonde : hey thanks a lot for your indepth crit! very interresting. It's fun, because a lot of people tell me that, that they prefer the first one. But it's not easy to know if they prefer the technique used (very loose vs a bit more tightened rendering) , or the subject (ruin atmospheric rescue vs clean landing pad). Not very scientific eh. Also a lot of people tell me they definitely prefer the 2nd version, and that they like the fact I kept the looseness, so well, I guess I gotta make my own opinion.
In an objective point of view I would say it's one of the first times I do a "detailed speed paint" so it's normal that I don't nail it right away :) thanks again.

dem0n : thanks!

Evil_Sloth : hey thanks. No I didn't use any lighting ref . I usually think that too , I prefer my quicker piece to my longer pieces. For this one though, I was quite happy with the result.

I think lot's of artists prefer their sketches to their more "tightened" peice...I have to agree with blonde that the 1st one has alot more life and is overall just more interesting.

I kind of do this on a more noob'ish level, where in trying to tighten and detail my picture you end up dwelling on things too much, or trying to make everything too perfect, and end up making it dull and lifeless....I suppose that's why looking down a hallway made out of perfectly straight lines and 90 degree angles would be alot less interesting then looking down a path with leafy hedges as walls and an vined arch as a "ceiling", you know what I mean ?

It's like in the first picture you are suggesting enough detail for the viewer to fill in the rest, but still add your own emotional element to it....whereas in the second picture you are giving us all the details to a point, but because of the subject type there is really no emotion, so it really becomes "stale" or really technical....like looking at blueprints or something (not that extremem, but you know what I mean ? )

Sorry to rant but this is something i'm trying to get a hold on as well...a good balance between the spontaneous lines of a sketch and the well thought out ideas of a, well, well thought out picture ;)

No matter, i it's still really tight and just wanted to add some food for thought ?

take it easy.
