I dunno about your enviroments (lack in atmosphere maybe), but your character designs are strong, especially the cyber guy with the cain.
I did a project at college this year, only a small one, that was about primates. What I was doing was just sketching from photos, good excercise to get familiar with the animal kingdom. Hard to do colour studies of them because they lack in colours really (apes), so i think the images here are done really well.
If you didnt use photo reference as a basic guideline then you should, it really helps, helps me anyway.

I wonder who inspired who, the Halo Artists, or the Artists for Blade 2.
As for the enviroments, I guess I just like things more solid and vibrant. Maybe just a personal tase where we clash :P

Hi Fl3wk,
What do you mean with inspiration, i didn't really understand it? Sorry, i'm just not so advanced english-speaking person.. I don't get the connection between Halo and Blade...
Nevertheless, i'm a very sick fan of Halo and had this revolutionary idea: "HALO, THE COMIC"! Being so proud of myself for having such an incredible concept, i found that comic has already being done by some of the greatest masters like Moebius & Co:teeth:
So now i'm pissed. First of all: someone already did it, and secondly: someone much better then me did it.
Sh*t.

Well just in case your dont know:
Blade 2 is a film where an African/American vampire can walk in the day. He tries to protect humans from vampires. Well, on Blade 2 his foes are...zombie like, they are like an advanced vampire race that were created by the current vampires. Well these advanced vampires look 'a lot' like this dude you are showing, just in the mouth region though.
Crappy short description, but busy doing studies ^^
i like the last one, its a very 'clean' study.

Slaving_maniac: Hi & thanks. That is my very first concept design ever, done in the school many years ago. I might get beck to that subject one day again..
Listing: thanks, but the first ones are actually full studies rather then sketches. I have a really hard time learning to draw and especially to paint out of my head because, as you can see in the first examples of my sketchbook, i was trained to repeat the reality and not to design from the blank page. But thanks to this community, i feel comfortable with that more and more every day..

Drawings throughout this book are simply awesome. Nice to see some brush play too, that 3 prong ship might make for a pretty cool concept, folding when it lands :).
The space port reminds me of martiniere's ringworld painting (http://www.martiniere.com/imagepages/ringworld.htm). Perhaps the depth and scale could be pushed by bringing the hood into view more.
Great work all round!

I've never seen anyone's skill level jump around so much, God damn. You've got like these five star sketches, then every now and then stuff like this http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24587&stc=1&d=1158569880, and http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18554&stc=1&d=1157224516. Then you've got something with good rhythm http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=17377&stc=1&d=1156958191, then turn around and draw http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=25593&stc=1&d=1158766302 like you'd never heard of it. You can kick ass when you want to, but I don't know, maybe those were just throw away sketches.

the mysterious goblinshark wants to comment on the legendary chupacabras thread:
good you have started to practice anatomy and form as i can see. on post 90 i can honestly help u with saying , never! draw the faces so little like on this one draw them big enough to put all the flowing lines in it, to find rythmn in it much better, that it would help.
the composition of your eviourments is good, they got potential just work more on the mood in there and try to make those space ships a bit more dynamic, like i can see "yeah they´re flying fast, !" so put more action in it and work more with effects , just try it:)

Nice Hogarth studies and really good stylised gestures. The legs look a little blocky and stiff but thats nothing that cant be solved with Hogarth. His diagrams of legs in Dynamic Anatomy really helped me with their shape and dynamics.
Keep going, man!
Kan Muftić
October 3rd, 2006, 01:39 PM
bradley: Thanks, mate. the #71 was really about going crazy with the brushes and then trying to figure out something with that mess.
maxetormer: I'm happy to hear that.
Beonarri: Hi! Hands are really a pain. I studied anatomy in the school ten years ago but have to repeat all that now. 'Cause i never had to deal with drawing out of my head before; now i started doing concept design. But you know that already, right?..
nineself: Hi there! Yes, Hogarth is a great help. But when i'm doing studies on him, i make it pretty difficult: the goal is to draw everything mirrored. Meaning, if i'm looking at the left hand, i draw right hand. That way, i really get to understand the shape and the logic behind the anatomy.
So here's something completely without any ref, just trying to remember stuff from the book and to make up stuff.
And btw, tomorrow i'm going to the zoo and will spend the whole day doodling beautifull creatures.
Stay tuned,
Chupacabra

Really , really nice!
the landscape sketch (15 min) looks like it´s from ALien-the movie.(my opinion) nice.
and the anatomy studies are also really nice and awesome and intresting.
I´m forgotin something...oh yes, NICE!
Kan Muftić
October 4th, 2006, 09:21 AM
Bonfire: Hey thanks! You're right it looks like Alien. I guess that's something i carry with me. I went to same school as H.R. Giger did (creator of Alien) and was extremely inspired by him during the studies.
And here's the result of my visit to zoo. So tough. Haven't done this for years. Just a few moments to catch proportions, drawing mostly while standing, surrounded by screaming kids, letting anyone stare at my sketches.
And those creatures can move, i can tell.
Try drawing a swiming fish and you'll know what i mean:)
Cheers,
Khan

However fun it is to draw gnarly and rough hands with bones poppin' out all over and they look like they are ready to totally rip apart whatever they touch, it's rarely the case where hands actually look like that. Especially with women. They have very soft and delicate fingers.
I got berated by a teacher for make a girl with he hand clenched in a fist, kinda edgey, like I would draw with a guy.
I'm going somewhere with this.
Draw some smooth and delicate hands for practice...unless you've drawn some already and I just forgot your previous posts. If so disregard everything I just said.

I understand, I'm just pointing out that girl's hands aren't like that, unless they are older...or witches. Then they can have gangly hands...and hooked noses.
The shoulders on the anatomy look off. It's a smoother curve betwee 1 and 2. There isn't a dimple there.
I had to break out my Peck book to see that.

Aye, chup.
Those monkey designs and the undead pitbul are all sensational. I see that you also included a few science fiction futurustic landscapes that hint at your talents in that category of art. I would advice you to continue to draw nature - animals, creatures, orangatang lipstick. You're great at it. The attraction to a calmer selection of colors can leave the smoke diffused - only for a short amount of time. The path of the tornado continues.
Sorry for the mistake in COW.
Keep doing you

Hi folks and big thanks for kind words.
Here are some of the samples of a recent workshop that i gave for a film school (Matte Painting fundamentals):

http://www.streamatica.ch/sketchbook/matte_excercise_01.jpg
http://www.streamatica.ch/sketchbook/matte_excercise_03.jpg
It was about understanding and respecting the given footage and extending shots based on the realistic photography.
And unfortunately, i didn't want to use any custom brushes. Basically two layers: original shot and the paintover, that's it.
Keep inspiring me guys.

Anatomy is a never ending issue for almost everyone. It's like, you get down one thing and you thing you're gold, but another thing is pointed out to you. Usually, it's not pointed out to you until some months of you making the mistake.
The matte paintings are pretty awesome, and that's not a word I throw around often.

Very neat. With the Photo edits, you sampled colors from the pictures, correct? Then just painted. Did you use anything like Photo Filters or a Grain Filter...you know, color correction stuff, or was it just paint?
Also, did you use some of your own photos or just some you found somewhere.
Very nice.

Hey Chupacabra, You have a really nice SB going here. I am really enjoying your environment pieces. The thumbnails in post #45 help me to see how to simplify my enviros. Thanks for posting those. Yep. I totally understand the frustration with knowing just under enough anatomy. Can get by, but to really design and create shapes with realistic but stylized forms, need to understand anatomy like a mechanic knows a car. Admire that you set your site and than run for it. Great studies and I'm sure great results when you put it all together.
Keep posting more good stuff.

Hi there,
Delmar: Thanks a lot!
Helcom: Thanks! I also liked him, but it doesn't seem to be anyones darling. And it was such a hard job to do, believe me...
Beonarri: You're welcome!
Jorge Gecov: Thanks! But I'm recently trying to stay away from the custom brushes though.. Makes not much sense for a real job. Well, maybe sometimes...
Envisor: Thank you, sir. Yeah, i do have a look at photos and movies a lot. That's why i just told Jorge Gecov that i'm not really into this crazy custom brush thing anymore. Mostly, it's like client telling me exactly what they want: time of the day, vegetation, geographic situation, camera position, etc.
So i don't have too much freedom to go crazy and wait for "Happy Accidents" to happen.
Maybe other people have that freedom. Maybe they also like working that way. But i prefer being in exact control of what i'm painting.
I'll be posting some steps very soon, so maybe that'll help.
Basically, it's working the way you like it. Not only the way we see it on some DVD's even if they're quite helpfull (i made that mistake myself).
kischi: Thanks a lot. Yeah, i kind a dig that dude too.. And concerning MP, it's a wonderfull thing to do - takes very long to finish but i like getting hypnotized by the image. Go for it and let me know, i'd love to support you with some friendly advices.
JAIR428: Thanks! What you see here are just fundamentals, not the finished mattes. After i finish the concept, i add photographic elements over the painting the way you mentioned.
poise: Thanks Tiffany, but that's nothing for sure yet. I'm just going there to introduce myself.
God help me there!
designboot: Hey buddy! Thanks a lot. Oh, i'm so sorry for not having time to work on your fantastic project. But who knows? You have some great ideas there and i'm sure there will be some serious echoes about it.
Thank you all guys and girls for supporting my humble design skills, i can't stress enough how much that motivates me to keep on the track.

This is going to be a B-movie one day, i hope.

Excellent work. I could easily see you becoming a storyboard artist for a movie studio. Your designs would also be perfect in comics or gaming. Very cool.

Totaly off the subject. I'm totally passionate about the skiing. We developed a style that we call "snowsliding", which is basically whiping the slopes with your ass. Here's a pic from one of my ass-slidings:

Shameless self-wanking, right?
No serious, in case some of you guys happens to come to Switzerland at some point, feel free to join me in the beautifull Alpine slopes.
Let me know.
Cheers,
Hey, nice edge angles! You are kind of in the back seat though. I'll have to try this style the next time I am in a slalom race.
Oh yeah, your sketches are nice too. I am a big fan of the impressionistic environments myself. And your anatomy sketches make me want to go practice. Looking good...

tekdj: Yo! Thanks a lot man!
Listing: Thanks! I'll try to.
robmorfin: Hey! I feel there's just too much quality in that thread. Keeping up with guys like Sparth, Pringle or Dallas is just... Crap, they're all too good.
sabe2003: Merci!
alti: Hey Alti! Well, You've seen it in the FF section now:)
DennisCurrie: Thanks, that is very nice to hear.
voraz: Hey, dude! I spent so much love on this lion... It marks a very special time of my life and has a great emotional value for me.
Jorge Gecov: Hallöchen! Thanks. For more enviros, check the FF section right now:)
dCepT: Many thanks, glad to hear that!
BludHund: Thank You very much. I am really trying it hard.
mr. m: Thanks! It is kind of a real funny thing to do...
Grimwolf: Many thanks. But I don't think I could ever be doing storyboards. That is the most difficult thing for me to do.
giloosh: You are very welcome.
sanoma: So thank you for doing it now. Welcome, bro!
Solon: I am very glad to hear that. More stuff is on it's way soon..
BrewSki: HEYA! Cool, another Snow-Eater like me.

Paintball, the grownd up version of playing war in the backyard.
Or, if you want a darker, more psychological approach. It's like saying, "I want to hunt down people and shoot them, but I don't want the hassle of a trial."
Er...good painting, nice motion, nice clothing, gun could use some work though. And I think the rock in the middle ground is a bit too detailed considering how much detail is in the person. I think toning back the texture would fix that.

Hey folks,
Thanks for kind words. I thought, i'd post some old stuff here again.
I was at my parents place and thought that some of the paintings that hang in their appartment were made with huge ammount of effort. All trad.
The nude was a study i did in '97. and the lion was made in '99.
Size of the nude is about 1 meter high (european measures) the lion a bit smaller.
Hope You like it,
Khan
that female portrait is amazing....

Hey there,
Envisor: Hey mate, what's up? Thanks..
Beonarri: Hey there. Good point about the paintball.. This is actually an anti-war piece made to simulate images from Iraq. Terrible things..
dkounios: Thanks a lot, dude!
Ok, so now I have a big statement. I got hired by NC Soft Europe in Brighton, UK for the position of the Senior Concept Designer. I am so happy and my heart goes bonga-wonga all the time. This forum and Your support helped me get there. So folks:
BIG THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope, I'll be posting often enough in here. But if I don't, have in mind that I'm very gratefull for all the crits and comments given in this little sketchbook of mine.
Here's something I did in 1992, during my first year in the art school. I modeled the portrait of Leonardo based on the only selfportrait he ever made.
The other one is just a creature without a clue..
I hope You like it.

I'm pretty new to CA and You are such an inspiration! Your enivronments and industrial design are beautiful! The color and line work in your paintings are unique themselves and open my mind to a new place. I've always been afraid to experiment like that. Is there a name to the technique? Thanks so much! :)

Good morning,
Thanks for such a feedback, guys. That's a great starter into the week.
bradley: Hi! Well, it's much better than I expected to be. At least for now, I know I'll be longing for my sunny swiss mountains in few months:)
Helcom: Thanks, good to hear that. I can't tell how much animals I drew as a kid and the passion is still there. These days it's more characters and machines but I plan to get back to them again soon.
Dabaers: And you just earned a drink from me, sir.
crimson13: Hi and welcome to the best school of the planet: CA.org. The technique is called Draw-Fu. Just kidding, I draw so much and I get better with each attempt. That's how things work, I guess. Thanks for your kind words.
Chermilla: Hi there! Brighton is Nutterton! Full of crazy people, beer monsters, cheap harbor food and hot girls. Me likes! The job itself is a dream come true.
Really. You around here too?
Clodioz: Yeah, it's a crazy place. I still fight to accept that fact, mate:)

Ok, so this is what happened due to lack of my beloved XBox, without bed, without anything a geek like me needs to survive. The reason for missing those props is that I just moved in a new (hahaha, new... the oldest phuckin flat in Brighton, I think) flat and was sleeping on the floor.
So, instead of trashing myself with beer, I decided to stay home and draw.
Here's the result.
Cheer fellows!

I like how much attitude you've put into the recent sketchbook updates. Your work is showing serious confidence, style, and grace. There is a rhythm I'm picking up in a lot of your design choices and it's progressing with each piece. Totally glad you're getting more attention and congrats on the new gig at NC Soft, looks like a good spot for your innovation and creativity to run wild!

Wie häsch de geil color Effekt so anebracht? gseht echt geil us!
Your pencil Sketches looks once again fantastic. just little crit I have to the samurai. the posture lookz not so correct, the character needs more balance. but easy, Im a Nooby so you must my crit not to seriously. :bashful:

zweiDee: Hey Bro! Yeah, he's falling on his ass any second. And about the cheesyness of the enviros: it's what clients asked for. You know me very well and you know I'm not that flowers and singin' birds type of guy. right?
Tmza: Thanks a lot for giving me some serious motivation, mate!
undergroundsean: Thanks! But MPs are mostly pain in the ass, to be true..
darkchild: Thanks, that's what client (Eyeball NYC) asked for.
spazazo: Thank you very much!
So, here's another product of a boring weekend.
Instead of using my hand to touch myself again, I used it as a model to practice a bit. And the other one is just the generic stuff..

I made music, storyboard, directing, played that guy with the long hair, edited and posted the video. My lovely sister helped me a lot on the day of shooting.

there is great stuff in here, man. it's late so i can't comment on it all, but i went through all the pages tonight. there is a really nice feel to some of it, and the concept design stuff is really solid. i respect the ability to ideate like that--i tend to just do pictures or sequences without thinking about design too much.
