First post here, I just hope that my newly found interest and attempts in sculpture can someday be at least half as good as the majority of works I`ve seen on this forum. Smellybug`s tutorial is what really made me want to give it a go.

Anyways....having trawled around many `craft-type` shops around my area, I could not find anyone who supplied Super Sculpey. One firm claimed to and 2 hours drive later I discover that they sell regular old Sculpey >:{ They did however sell Fimo Puppen. At first I thought `uh-oh...not Fimo` having played with it a few years ago without much success, but, having made the journey I thought `what the hell` and bought some.

I`m bloody glad I did :teeth: Not sure how it compares with Super Sculpey, but I find working with it to be a blast. Having never seriously tried sculpting before I did a `test` piece Dragon-type head thingy and, without being big headed, I was amazed at how easy it seems to get reasonable results. I sweated a bit whilst it baked (imagined it melting into a puddle...lol) but it held up no problem. As this was a test, I tried adding some Fimo Soft as this is very easy to smooth and texturize and then re-baked it...again no problem.

Does anyone else here have any experience of using Fimo Puppen? The main reason I ask is that when it comes to smoothing, I am unsure what chemical to use. Rubbing alcohol or white spirits, the same as Super Sculpey?

Hope I didn`t bore too much with my first post and I look forward to becoming a more active member of this forum in the future.

I know someone who worked with fimo before and it can be pretty cool. you could alway test some extures on a small piece of fimo and try to smooth it out no?

Hello MRGREY,
I have used FIMO but prefer PREMO!....Wow I’m a poet and didn’t even know it!... I’ve used alcohol, Turpenoid and lighter fluid to smooth FIMO. My favorite is Turpenoid, but don’t use a lot as it attacks the clay pretty viciously.

If your having a problem finding Super Sculpey check with www.polymerclayexpress.com they have it…but they also have on of my favorites Super Sculpey firm…..Happy sculpting!!

I've never heard of any polymer clay reacting differently to alcohol/turp/lighter-fluid so I'd say to try out what ever you have. Experimentation is your friend.

Since your in the UK, instead of Polymerclayexpress you might do better with one of the following UK located businesses:
http://www.polymerclaypit.co.uk/index.html
http://www.gocreateworkshops.co.uk/
I've never used either nor have heard anything bad about either.

I didn’t say it reacts differently to each chemical. I was trying to give several options for him to try.…and yes I agree experimentation is your friend and the support of other artists.

Thanks for the responses.

Kobold, thanks for the links, I will investigate.

Hiddenpixel, I have bought a small bottle of `English Distilled Turpentine` which it says is designed for oil paints. Watered down it`s still quite strong but seems to be doing the job. Just test baking a piece now...hope it doesn`t melt...lol

HiddenPixel, I'm confused, my post wasn't directed at nor in response to anything you said.

It was a simple flat statement that I have never heard of any pc reacting differently to the various chemicals used for smoothing and that therefore, MrGrey, should experiement with what ever he has.

Oops, hope I haven`t started an argument :blah:

I have had some success with the distilled terpentine, but have to watch how much I use (definately gotta water it down as it seems to really attack the clay). Used it on this first sculpt http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67147 on the face.

The `gills` on the cheeks were seriously weakened with the terpentine, but after baking all appears fine. :teeth:

Hi all,I have just joined and have been reading with interest about Puppen fimo. After giving up painting I decided to try sculpting.I use puppen fimo and have been having trouble conditioning it.I bashed it,I rolled it,I sat on it,lol, put it down my bra to warm,I used the FIX thingy, but it still seems too dryish. The supplier says that it is not their fault but I do wonder if, when being shipped it has got a bit warm and dried out.I want to do right by my babies.Any / all advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi@all!
Today, this is my first post in this forum (but i have watched it for a long time :)

The works in this forum are the reason why i've started sculpturing.
I've made my first experiments with some terracotta clay-stuff...and learned that its not the right material for sculptures like yours. My first work can move the arms now :D
I'm from germany and found no supersculpey in my local stores. Second try, i bought Fimo too. But it makes his job very well (i think).
To smooth my work i've used several types of sandpaper, but i will test alcohol in the near future....and post some pics of "work in progress"

P.S. Nice to find other people using Fimo :)

Hi! I haven't been online in ages but you can take a look at my sculptures on my website if you like. I use puppen fimo. I highly recomend :) It isn't really like those tiny packs of fimo clay. I also prefer to smooth as much as i can without anything and then use some tls. Yes you can use tls with puppen fimo :) Alcahol will darken the clay somewhat but not to the point where you may care much but I do. The mix of puppen fimo I use is still very light.

I tried the alcohol on puppen fimo (96%) but nothing really happens to it. Receiving some living doll/pro sculpt soon (I hope ordered it on the net) to see how it compares.
I hope puppen fimo handles the same cause I can get that in a shop anly a few minutes away. the other sculpey stuff needs to be ordered online :s .

Do you have any pics of your sculpt?

hehe, just saw the date on the first post... 2006
