Very cool designs, I love the bold graphic shapes and pixelation. Have you worked in other raster programs, experimenting with your pixelated style by intoducing anti-aliased elements or color? Might be an interesting avenue to start to explore.

Awesome work! the "God" one and "_invigorate_null" are my favorites though I like them all. Some of these would be cool as tee-shirt designs too. Oh, "god" reminds me a bit of pyrimid head from Silent Hill, awesome. If you don't mind could you give us some insight as to how these are created, like a process or something?

Just visited your website and it is fucking great! I wonder if Trent Reznor and company visited it or saw your work before doing the "With Teeth Era" artwork. nin.com, the album art for With Teeth, and the LCD's during the WITH_TEETH tour all echo your style and vision. If I wasn't such a huge Nine Inch Nails fan I'd say you should sue.

g0d, the one with the arms spread out and a triangle head with a spiral in the centre is my favourite. It also shows an understanding of anatomy and proportions, judging from the arms & figure.

Well i could sever my finger and draw on satin sheets, but I think loss of blood would inhibit me from ever finishing a composition. So i think our tools do have some relevants to the intuitive choices we make as with our work, but its cool if you prefere to keep the mysery alive. best of luck with your renderings.

to people asking how he did it, it reminds me of GIF compression, if you make it black and white only, it will give you that grainy look, pixellation is easy to achieve with nearest neighbour upsizing in PS... If you draw in the pencil tool it is also quite grainy looking like this stuff. Anyway, just the way I'd get this look, the fact is Churis+ did it first and he does it well and amongst the stereotypical sci fi and medieval this is a breath of fresh air on these boards, thanks for sharing Chursi+ :)

just back again to say how badass these are. your style has devoloped even more since the last time i saw this stuff. ive been extremely influenced by your work since i first saw it. ive been doing an image recently(mspaint :P) and the character is a mechanical god and he has a pyramid for a head. at first his head was centered at a corner of the pyramid, but it was told to me that it looked to much like a silent hill character so i put it where a plane was facing and now it looks exactly like your G0d piece:

they weren't done in ms paint. maybe PARTS are done in ms paint, but not all of them. i can see places where you're using custom PS brushes, but its all cool. im a big fan anyway. i've been doin shit like this for years, its easy. but i hate people who dont share their techniques:
its the disolve transfer mode for the gradients and a threshold adjustment layer on top of everything so that the linework is pixelated too.
to control your shading, just layer solid white shapes that you've painted (set to disolve of course) and adjust their opasity.

it took some digging, but i found this old piece i did in this style about 9 years ago:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/glasse_of_dust/cyborg_test_01-copy.gif
(i had to shrink it down in size, it was HUGE, thats why my pixels seem a bit small)
but my piece doesn't have that beautiful graphic feel to it....

wow, i just love "_armor"
we see a lot of this kind of subject matter, meaning odd creatures and mysterious figures, around here lately, that this technique really makes me stop to look at it in a different way, the pixels give it more of an at-edge feel - i wonder how you would approach color! :]

impressive stuff churist. your handling of black and white is extremely well done. I especially like the ambguity of the works, leaving only the required details to convey the message.
how long do most of these take you?

Crewl Stuff Chur.. I like thise one the most: http://www.ef.art.pl/katalog/8199.png
I wonder why u didn't try'ed some inverted ones?
U also seem te be drawing mostly typical 'cool fighter stuff'. I love the more surreal pieces u did. U schould try to let completely go your concious mind and follow the flow...trying to draw what u s when u r high or asleep... I believe u could create much more interesting pieces in this way!
Keep up the believe here :D...I hope to c u developpe a more natural style in your works (in means of theme)...The technique is pretty much ok...I would try to use more black areas in your work and less whites (thats just personal)...Maybe add more patterns (i love the mirrored looks some of them have)
I hope i gave u abit of supporting advice here, otherwise just ignore my words and remember that im a fan of your work,
Greetz,
Kir!

Just out of curiosity, considering that photoshop doesn't allow you the ability to display the raw digital nature of these works, are these part of a series conveying some kind of commentary on digital artwork in general? Is that commentary negative, or positive? Is it your stance that digital illustration relies too heavily upon emulating traditional media, rather than being embraced as it's own entity?
The point I'm trying to make is that this work, though striking, and an obvious show of your talent, it's difficult to fully grasp the purpose of this work, beyond emulating to some extent the "happy accidents" that can occur when working in traditional media, where randomness of a wayward graphite smudge, or an ink-bleed lends itself to the overall design in a way that could not have been achieved had you "micromanaged" the piece from the beginning.
So, in all honesty (like myriad other abstract or semi-abstract work) I have a hard time reconciling the apparent intentional handicap of using a less intuitive and far more confining program vs. photoshop - which begs the further question of why not just using traditional pen and ink, as that is the style which you most apparently are emulating in these works?
Please don't respond with a brief "this is my chosen medium" response either - the point I'm trying to make isn't "Paint sucks, photoshop is better" the point is, why digital at all?
Just something I wanted to ask you since I first saw these a while back.
For what it's worth, I do enjoy them, I was just curious.

whatta ya mean photoshop doesn't allow you to do this? bullshit, haven't you guys ever heard of "threshold"?
you can take ANY IMAGE you can find and make it look like this in photoshop in 2 seconds.
i like your work, but dont be stupid man. you can do this in photoshop 10times easier than in ms paint.
and personally, i dont believe you only used ms paint because i can clearly see places where you've used grunge textures AND custom brushes.
no offence but i think you're full of shit.
BUT they are beautiful pieces in the end.
i just think your lying about your process.

complete2> I am processing with Paint only.
try to gain the same effect using PS treshold; you can not obtain that effect because it does not have genuine value of MS Paint pixelization; it will be always fake without that basic value.
I do not give a fuck if you think different.

btw, im just saying that i PERSONALLY dont belive you're using ms paint only.
my main argument is that you CAN do this with photoshop.

they weren't done in ms paint. maybe PARTS are done in ms paint, but not all of them. i can see places where you're using custom PS brushes, but its all cool. im a big fan anyway. i've been doin shit like this for years, its easy. but i hate people who dont share their techniques:
its the disolve transfer mode for the gradients and a threshold adjustment layer on top of everything so that the linework is pixelated too.
to control your shading, just layer solid white shapes that you've painted (set to disolve of course) and adjust their opasity.
i posted a psd of this as well.
im not commenting here anymore because i dont want to hijack your thread.
i just needed to prove to others browsing your thread that you CAN do this with PS.
i'll leave you alone now.

I like this stuff... I don't think it matters what he did it in.
I don't get what it is with the mistrust on this website...I've seen a lot of arguments like this. If I go to an art gallery opening and some guy tells me he painted stripes without the use of tape, I'm not going to pull out my magnifying glass and try to prove him wrong in front of everyone. The art is what matters!
And really there's no way to prove one way or another what churist's process is, so isn't it just easier to give him the benefit of the doubt?

your efforts are pointless nevertheless pathetic.

Very inspiiring! Reminds me of old comicbooks. I especially like the guy on the floating orb. The subtle sugestions of an environment makes it more interesting.
Kir Nuyt's idea about more black and less whites is interesting aswell. you should try it.

dunno complete2, seems perfectly possible in paint, you can copy selections and scale them to make repetetive patterns, you gotta be creative with the limited tools you got.
Went in paint and tried something out, it's a piece of crap.. but still

jens, im not saying this is impossible in paint, im just saying that it IS possible in PS.
THATS my argument.
btw churist, the thing i posted was just to prove you wrong, NOT to create a piece of art, and it worked.
i proved you wrong. it may not look pretty, but it does prove you wrong.
but again, i DO love these pieces. i never said i didn't like them. in fact, i've given you ton of praise for them. i think they rock.
i just personally believe that you're using photoshop. but thats just my opinoin, not what im arguing.
i dont really care how you did them, either way they rock. but dont say that you CANT do this with photoshop, becasue you can.
and i've proven that.
so please, lets move on.

complete, why is it that every thread I go into, I see you trying to pick a fight with the artists and their superior work? Were you not hugged enough as a child? Discussion is one thing, but when you continually are straight up rude for no reason. I dunno man. It just seems really childish. Churist, your work is excellent.

complete2 - seems like churist allready moved on...u just gotta catch up, dude:)
i believe that, for the artist, the process of making these is very relevant to the meaning of the pieces...and, even tho i tend to think in terms of craft, and not fine art (meaning i personally couldn't care less about which tools were used, or how - the end result is all that matters to me), i respect the artist's choice of method and delivery.
...and i wish the updates would come more often!

Jesus Complete2, chill out. Maybe you're right, maybe you're not. If he doesn't want to share how he does his work then its his loss, he won't be moving forward, progressing, which is quite evident in his work.
You're work is great churist, really dark and atmospheric, always loved pixel-art but your pieces are starting to look all to much alike, maybe time to do something a little differant, experiment a little?

There's a neat trick I'm not sure a lot of people know about: Open Paint and draw a random stroke. Then, use the selection tool to to isolate something, and hold down Shift while dragging it around... The technique is an awful lot like what we've seen here, making it all the more likely that these were Paint-exclusive.
