DEADLINE
MONDAY, MAY 1st

Platform Game (Mario/RayMan/Oddwold) - memorable characters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_game
it's our turn...

for the fun part - add the very first enemy, the smallest of them all.. you know.. the first thing that you encounter in this type of games ;)
feel free to add descriptions/powers/moves.. whatever tricks you.
Now... concept! :yayca:

That's a pretty fucking wide range there. Sure you couldn't throw in like one little parameter? And do we have to describe all the stuff he/she/it can do? Otherwise it sounds like a killer idea, i'm definitely in.

Oblio
April 25th, 2006, 06:22 AM
There is no need for description.
The range... may be wide but that's the hard part. I can think of a bunch of platform characters that did not stick with the gamers. There is no point in aiming to do one, if you don't want it in the hall of fame.

For description i would highlight the moves/actions that stand out - no need to describe the jump or double jump unless it's something different/or special etc.

Also - i suggest you think 2D platform game - but it is not a restriction. It's only my personal opinion that a 2D setting will highlight better your character.

nice and non-linear. I like non-linear.

It has to be a human or just human-like character?

old 2D - mario,sonic,prince of persia,metroid,pacman,zelda,metalslug,lemmings,...

This could be quite difficult. Jazz Jackrabbit was the first thing I thought of for some reason...

So your supposed to draw the character the way it was in game in your style or do a redesign?

Cool!... I wanna see some Castlevania-wannabes and Megaman/Rockman-type characters!!!...

For some reason, I was thinking of Klonoa when I read the topic...

No redesign.
It is not required to be human or humanoid. It can be .. a "thing" if you make it become a character ;)

Um, i did some sketches for an initial idea. I think it's got potential but i could use some feedback, i'm not sure if it's all doable or real memorable. I kindof based myself on an old idea, dunno if that's allowed. The little guy's tentative name's Pango (yes dumb i know) he's going up against the machine monsters that are taking over and destroying his green planet and he's very elastical.

Alright, here we go... Quite a lengthy description/story.
Update 28/4: Added B&W part with story on image, and frame with details.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f107/cognitionsb/cognitionsb_CHOW23_GREGapr06.jpg

Possessed Greg (continued from image story)

...After running riot, Possessed Greg was eventually captured and stored in a subterranean facility, bolted into a box inside a chest inside a sarcophogus. However, as the next Halloween approaches his powers grow stronger. Strong enough to break free of his shackles!

Now... As the player you must guide him to his birthplace, devouring souls along the way to increase your abilities.

As a character he's limited to human movement (walk, run, jump), simply because of the scarecrow vessel housing the demon. However, as a demon his connection with the 'other side' provides extra functions. Also, the demon is not restricted to any one form, growing stronger with the addition of more souls. He's essentially invulnerable, but you need to keep the scarecrow body habitable while heading towards the ultimate goal.

here´s mine, first the sketches and then the final:
(edit: removed the WIPs)

In an alternate japan 1740, a blind farmer namned Tuchiro lived a happy and quiet life on the Okinawa countryside. His grown up son Jaisho was a soldier in the shogun Domoichis service. Domoichi ruled the land with an ironhand and seemed to have no mercy. One day Jashio was ordered to kill a farmer for not paying his tax. Jaisho disobeyed, which was not taken lightly by his superiors. He was executed for treason and his body was sent home.

That night, when Tuchiro held his dead sons body, he made an oath. He would not rest until he had put an end to Domoichi and his dynasty. He would avenge his son.

Now. Tuchiro is not the ideal warrior. First off he´s a 75 year old farmer.. and he´s blind. But his devotion to his son and the oath that binds him, brings him great power. When the game begins you have only a sword and your sons armor. But as you fight your way from the countryside to the capital, you can obtain new weapons, martial art moves, armor and equipment.

Alright, reformatted my image to the new guidelines, also added another little pic and moved the intro onto the image.

Lingmerth, Tyranx, Tuchten - Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

Tuchten - I get a nice old school vibe from your piece, seems perfect for Gameboy - also got a chuckle out of the pixel animals. heh

hah yea, that detail was always there. I found it amusing we both had the same idea. Don't worry about it, I'll change it in my piece since the farmer is just an extra. Your guy's the main character - he needs to be the underdog!

Lingmerth - You'll get there... There's a lot for me to learn, too.

I went for the "cute happy happy rainbowland" type of platform ^^

You start the game whit broken wings (since some mean human has tore them appart for fun) and no skills, but later in the game you will regain the ability to fly for a short period of time and learn various spells. The thing he got in is hand is a bread crumble.

Here's my WIP. I plan on doing all of the transformations...

http://www.tgarbarini.com/dump/chow23wip.jpg

Ruvana

In ancient India, the King is kidnapped by a mysterious villain and the Prince, Ruvana, is the nation'ss only hope!! Taking up the family's secret treasure (glowing energy blade and Tranformation Gem), Ruvana embarks on a quest to save his father.
In his human form, Ruvana can attack with his energy blade, block with his shield, and use a limited amount of offensive spells via the blade's energy. Using the power of the Transformation Gem, however, enables Ruvana to transform into a Bear, Monkey, Elephant or Octopus. He must use each of the animals to get past certain areas of the game.
The bear is the most powerful and uses his strength to defeat the most powerful enemies, destroy walls and barricades, and hibernate to regenerate health among other abilities.
The monkey is the most agile, using his speed and dexterity to climb walls and work around traps and pitfalls.
The Elephant is the wisest animal and enables Ruvana to cast a variety of spells.
The Octopus will help Ruvana through the underwater areas.

I wanna play my game :(

Absolutely fantastic tuchten! Really like the mixed style too.
You just keep getting better and better Lady Medusa. Love it!

Now I know it's VERY simplistic, but i'm trying to get something that looks iconic and comic without losing character. If i'm failing utterly in that respect tell me and i'll ditch it for something more detailed:

Arse! you updated it while I was typing - looking good :)

**

I think this guy could make quite a funky little platform character! Something really styalised as in a similar vein to "Exit" on psp.

http://uk.gamespot.com/psp/action/exit/index.html

Just think of all the cool stuff you could do with a character that is liquid :)

I think you need to make him look a bit more "blobby" though, there are too many sharp edges on this guy at the moment.

Ok., here is main.
It’s not finished but I think I won’t have more time to finish it. In that case that’s my FINAL.
I am not a big fan of platform game – but I have played in few of them on my ATARI and COMMODORE :D. Now I prefer RPG, but usually I don’t have much time and I don’t play much. Anyway, her is a JAAP [is this good name for this character?], a dragon-like character. He has a magical and technical equipment to fight with enemies. He has a long telescopic stick to jump over the precipices and a first aid kit to heal the wounds.

Crits and comments are welcomed.
Cheers

jakkas- beautiful as always, do you do all that in PS?
erilaz- I agree with your choice of simple, simplicity tends to lead toward iconoclism (sp? even a word?) mario never got deeper than fireballs, and racoon tails before becoming an icon. Sonic runs fast and jumps....man I miss my NES and my Genesis. simple=fun.
Cognition-I love the concept. I'd play it I love that kinda stuff.

Hey guys,

This is my first time posting on this site so, don't laugh. I kind of threw this together in a day, but I think it's the gist of what I was going for. I'd have liked to work on it more but the deadline approaches and I have work tomorrow *sigh*. Some of the technique I see around here just blows my mind. I only hope I can keep up!

Meet Molly, Im racing to get this finnished on time!

http://www.trevorwhite.co.uk/mollycopy.jpg

Phew!

O k - Molly works as a mechanic fixing robots, and in her spare time invents cool gadgets. In this world everyday household items are robots - things like toasters, washing machines, microwaves etc.

However - suddenly alot of robots have got thier wires crossed - literally - and are causing mischief. Its up to Molly to fix them and find out the cause.

I focused on the main aspect of any platform game - jumping.

Molly has a pair of spring loaded boots that allower her to leap over enemies and obstacles, the longer you hold the trigger button the more powerful the jump - the tilt of the analog stick determines how far or high, so timing and accuracy are key: especially when avoiding some of the BIG robots.

She can also scale great heights by kicking off one wall to another, as well as backflipping out of harms way.

Her main weapon is a big wrench - useful for twatting unruly robots! It can also be used as a hook so that she can latch onto wires and cables and use them as a zip line.

I also had an idea for a magnet gun that would temproarily stun enemies by scrambeling thier circuits and allower her to 'fix' them - letting her use the robot as a sidekick + whatever abilities it has.

An unfinnished render of it which can be found here (http://www.trevorwhite.co.uk/molly.jpg)

The Roaster Toaster is a toaster gone bad - its quite small and weak but it will ping slices of flaming death at you untill its taken out (by a big wrench to the noggin ;) ). The thickness of the smoke indicates when its going to fire - which it does by tilting its head down in the direction of the player.
