Hi
Well I was scrounging through my hard drive and put together a bunch of stuff that I thought was interesting. This is all upto 6 months old. No project inparticular, just messing around.
This is usually the quality of work I do for my concepting jobs. I try to do things as fast as possible and still convey an idea. Most of this stuff is pretty rough. I am short on patience too so I get bored after a couple hours working on something.
Anyhoo, hope you like. Sorry for the big D/L

You are an insanely good SOB...I love it! Even though these were just for fun...how long did they take you roughly? Do you do each one in one sitting?
Well, anyway always a pleasure to view your art.

Wait I lied
Some of those character drawings took me quite awhile. I tend to work on something for a bit and put it away and then come back to it a week later. That girl on the very bottom is killing me. She is based on a sculputre by Degas. I have been messing with her forever. So longer than a couple hours on some of those.
I really enjoy doing character stuff so I tend to spend alot more time doing them. Environments are another story. I cant seem to find the passion with them Just dont interest me as much. Thats probaly why I only spend an hour or so on each one. I cant handle any longer. Drawing little chairs and windows makes me mad. ahahaahaha.
oh man and sorry Nard....... most of these are done totally in photoshop. DOH!

Hey Hawk,
Thanks for sharing! I think the last image of the girl in the crazy skirt is very interesting. I would love to see her completely super detailed in color... I feel if you color it to your maximum ability with nice color play...I believe you will have completely out done your self.

Hey thanks Joshua
She is killing me man.
I thiink its because the original is HUGE. I wanted it to be poster size. So I am getting way bogged down in the little details. She has tons of little bolts and crap on her.
You are right. I need to pull back and lay down some broad color and stuff just to keep it moving.
Thanks man

Jay,
the 2 penciled creatures in the lower right quad of the second grouping make me want to cry....
I haven't gone "monstering" in WAAAAAY too long...
You have inspired me...

These are freakin amazing. you got the guy in the red suit, then the characters, weird monsters, and then the environments. Man I'm going nuts. These just made my day, and I'm sure I'll go back to them to get inspired.
Thanks Hawkprey!

Hey thanks Stale..... You know I feel pretty comfortable doing monsters but when you start talking about aliens...... man I have a hard time. Its a wierd distinction.
Hey Ink...... that guy in the suit was tough. He is actually one of my favorites. Try making a guy in a business suit look cool. It aint easy. ahhahaa

Wow hawkprey that is awesome and inspiring (although I'll never get close to being that good)!
Hope you don't mind entertaining questions for a total newbie; is the shading for the characters done with markers too? (I think so, but haven't seen anyone else do it so well for organic things) How do you get that gradually darkening or lightening effect (as if blending the different gray values)?

That red suit guy looks fantastic. I like how you made the focal point so interesting, while it is the (seemingly) least saturated area. Kudos!

Very nice. I really love that style, reminds me of my inspiration that got me drawing again recently - Feng Zhu. As much as I believe in being original and such, your and Feng's style is something I'm aiming for - or at least that level of quality.
Lotsa work for me, I need patience, confidence and an open imagination. I look forward to seeing more work from you!

Wow, Very cool work, I'm always ready to look at more Hawkprey stuff :) You have a really nice style to your illustration that is very distinctive without being trapped in a particular idiom. I also really like the way you highten and develop detail in character drawings without overcrowding them.
If these are photoshop, you've managed to make the linework and rendering look very natural.
Only one crit: personally I'd prefer the green station perspective with a horizontal eye-line, but that's just me ;)

That's some fine stuff! I really like the crouching creature wit da cyberhands. Excellent concept work on all! Why not add some ideation notes (like, um- "400 round/minute slugthrower with optional grenade launcher") Clients love that kind of thing, and it's a big help and inspiration to the folks who model up these things.

even more than your style, i love your ideas.
shapes, form, size relationship... in the hands of a skilled man they are the mightiest things ever.
i still have the two pics of different blade/axe designs you posted way back at the old team gt forum. i am sure you did them, although they are unlabeled...
they still kick me ass and get my creative juices flowing :)
your latest stuff really shows a lot of progress, compared to the older rock-my-ass concepts like that four-legged monster for bobo to model (bobo: you invited me to skin it, so where's the sdk, dammit ;)).
keep it up man :)

You can definitely tell that you enjoy drawing figures more than environments. Which is a shame because as good as your figure work is, I think you can make even more stunning environments if you had the desire for it.
But I can definitely empathize. I get very bored and weary of doing backgrounds. For me, figure work and design is where the fun stuff is at.
My favorite pieces are the ones with all the noodled little details, half inked and half penciled. That look just really appeals to me. The 'black mech' really stands out to me, too.

Hey Thanks alot guys.
I am really flattered that you can see the worth in these rough drawings.
SInce being in the industry my main goal has been, becoming a solid concept artist. This usually means be very fast as well as conveying a decent idea. I think I got the fast part down, but of course quality will always suffer.
The kicker is.... Now that I am so used to churning out these sketches, if you asked me to do a full blown production peice I would choke. This is my huge weakness now. YOu wont be seeing any book covers from me.
Oh well something to strive for. Its really cool that you guys see the value in this quick stuff. Makes me want to work even harder.

Maybe it is just me, but I prefer to see sketches. The roughness of the pencil/marker is always exciting to see because it has so much energy. Sometime that energy gets lost in the tight rendering of a final product.
Really enjoyed seeing your work and the new posts. And I agree with Jason, you are definitely improving. The quality is there....and it will keep getting better. So it will be exciting to see your new pieces!
Don't worry too much about producing 'Full blown' production piece... speed, clarity of the idea, and quality of the sketch is key to working full time in the industry. I know a number of ILM artists and that seems to be the key to working full time as an illustrator/concept artist.

here a little treat for those of you who read to the end of the thread.
These are some quick comps I did for this project that was really rooted in reality. They were pushing for realistic and close to contemprorary.
I know this is evil to do in the concept biz, but I photoref'd alot stuff. Saves time and gets stuff down on paper. If the client wants realistic sometimes you have to bite the bullet and give him photo. Kinda sux.
