Nice one Davi :)
The keyboard shortcut 'Shift + X' will toggle between the foreground and background colours (black and white) if set up in the colors palette. The old stylus will be on meltdown.

wow i didn't even think about trying that.
that will make grey scale drawing work at uber light speed.
this is a great brush trick until you get into details, things seem to get rather annoying with the resat.

I think the most important Trick to getting 8 to work properly out of the box is to set up your Brush Tracking.
Apparently a Pressure Scale of 1.00 seems to make it act like painter 7, where as the brushes don't 'dig in' as much.

I have been messing around with v8, and of course it still suffers from "slow brush" syndrome. A good number of brushes (acrylics too) still lag when above a certain size, doesn't have to be that big either. Does someone know of a setting or brushes good for covering larger areas withouth too much lag?

Hi there,
In Painter 8, I can't figure out how to simply desaturate using a (photo?) tool. (what I want to desaturate's on a layer).
Basically, I want to be able to desaturate like in Photoshop, using a brush that (de)saturates.
I've tried Photo/Saturation Add with all possible numbers and combinations, and it only adds saturation. In 7, if you tweaked some parameters you could turn anything in color into its grayscale version.
I've try Photo/Colorizing using black or white and it doesn't work.
I've looked for other tools but can't find anything other than selecting the shape and using a menu (pain in the ass).
I'm pretty sure there's a way, but I haven't found it and the help doesn't point out to anything (obvious). I don't have the manual for 8. Seven worked slightly differently, so its manual's not useful in this case.
? clues ?

Talos: I have Plenty of HD space and 1 Gig of ram. When my brush are beyond a certain size, they slow down to a crawl too. I don't know but 1 Gig should be enough, huh? My processor's "only" an AMD 2.0 but still...

When you are working in high resolution (like tegehel has to work for professional pieces) you are going to get lag...it's inevitable. One thing I have found that helps (this is a side note) if you are using win xp...create a seperate logon for just when you are painting. Over time if that's the only thing you ever do with that logon name xp will start to allocate all ram to it, etc...) One thing I have started doing is picking a color and filling an area with the actual paint bucket or something like that and then painting over top of that. Even the selection tool could be used to select areas to fill in. Also remember your feature setting as well...if your feature is set too low and your brush size is too high it will go really slow. Hope that helps a little.

Does anyone know the shortcut keys for the actual drawing tools. I want to change from the pallete knife, to the oil pastel. Also does the pencil have a quickkey?
Any quick keys would be helpful.

The 1 to 0 keys bump the opacity of your brush strokes up and down from 10% to 100%
This one should already be obvious. Just building on davi's tip.

If you like some of the impasto brushes, but don't want the impasto, you can permanently turn them off by setting "the draw to" to "color" instead of depth.

Does anyone know of hot keys to switch between brushes? I Like to jump between painting and erasing while working in photoshop but there doesn't seem to be hotkeys for the brushes at all. Anyone know?

Sorry, no hot keys that I know of :(
You could invert the double ended Wacom stylus and select your eraser and associated settings with the 'eraser' end. That way, you can always access your eraser (or any other brush if first selected) by inverting your pen (stylus). This can also be done with two separate pens, with one set as an eraser.
In Painter 6 and 7, you could also make yourself a nice custom palette for quick access to the erasers and other favourite brushes, papers and even some menu items.
Unfortunately, in Painter 8, the custom palette feature has been dropped. There is a 'Tracker' palette, which will allow access to your most recently used brushes however.
In Photoshop, the eraser is actually a separate tool from the brushes, whereas in Painter, the erasers are simply brush variants.

Asked earlier:
I've tried Photo/Saturation Add with all possible numbers and combinations, and it only adds saturation. In 7, if you tweaked some parameters you could turn anything in color into its grayscale version.
Solution:
Select the Photo: Saturation Add variant and reduce the "Grain" slider to 0%.
Save as "Desaturate" variant.
Restore the "Saturation Add" variant to its original setting for future use.
The new "Desaturate" variant will, uh, desaturate color imagery. You may want to additionally set the "Opacity" expression pop-up (Brush Creator "General" tab) to "Pressure". This will make the variant more controllable.

I have a question:
in Painter 7 I used to have the ability to change the background in my canvas window to another color, is it possible to do that in Painter8 ??
thx for your help!
All the previous posts were awesome!
David could you post an example of what you are explaining in your first post. thx
tegehel

That's a good question, Vyle. In Photoshop (PS), under WinXP, you could go to Desktop Properties/Appearances/Advanced, select "Application Background" and change the color there, then the background would change to that color (so will the background of every other application - but you can reset it later).
In Painter, you have Painter's background (default is light grey) and the canvas's background (a darker grey.)
The canvas's background color (darker grey) _seems_ to be hard-coded: I can't find a way to change its color (it's not even mentioned in the Help section).
However, like in PS, you can change the background color (default light grey) to any other color, as explained above. It will change the background of Painter, but not the canvas's background. Then if you "minimize" your canvas to its bare minimum (so it doesn't show that darker grey canvas background but just the painting itself) and place it in the middle of Painter's background (now with a new chosen color), you'll have some sort of similar effect, except you'll still see the canvas's borders.
It's not ideal, but it's as close as I was able to get it.
By the way, Vyle, saw your site: nice skill evolution in time. You're getting much better with that program.
Cheers and if you figure it out, let us know, please.

thx for the tip tegehel! It's a clever way to emulate the effect.
I run on W2000, and I tried to find a way to alter my canvas background window, but with no chance either.
I think it is hard-coded too for the 50/50 grey canvas background (how dumb is that btw), I was hoping that did not change when I received 8. I got so disapointed that little details like that got lost in the new version. I loved how you could customize your ui in 7.
Maybe a patch to fix that?? pleaaase forward that to the guys at corel!!
Thx for the comments on my progression! It is really thanks to forums like this one...
My turn now! : I really liked your Asheron's Call Templates ( I like those monochromatic paintings).
Other than that, Painter was an eye-opener for me: I barely use photoshop nowadays.

Hi,
You don't need to wait for anyone to forward your comments to Corel.
Send them directly to Corel Painter Program Manager Rick Champagne at:
rick.champagne@corel.com
Be sure to include your complete system specs, OS version, Painter version, with patch number if any, and all relevant details.

It's annoying that you can't hit "r" for smudge like you can in photoshop, but I have figured out you can build your own toolset like "oil"... I just made my own folder
Corel Painter 8 > Brushes > Painter Brushes > [your folder name]
Start by copying a couple of jpg, nib, stk, xml files from say "oil".. You can make new brushes in painter and save them in painter.
Play with it for a bit, I messed it up the first few brushes I made.
Now you can right click and pick one of your custom brushes from the menu... yummy!
Still not as good as a hot key though.

Learn to use Painter's Custom Palettes, available in all versions up to Painter 8, then in Painter 8.1 as well (with the patch installed).
You'll find instructions in the updated Painter 8 User Guide available in PDF format when you download the Painter 8.1 patch.
It's the quickest way to set up your brushes for ready access.

farmer,
Tell us what it is you're puzzled about, specifically. Then maybe we can help. Post your questions in a new thread, since as you can see by the thread name, this thread is for people to share their Corel Painter 8 Tricks and Tips.
Painter 7 is not better than Painter 8, nor is Painter 8 better than Painter 7.
Some people prefer one over the other for various reasons.
Take a look at my website, PixelAlley, where you'll find a lot of basic tutorials and information for Painter 7.
It won't teach you how to paint or draw, but it might help alleviate some of the confusion.
URL's below my signature.
You ask "how can it be there are no shortcuts for tools?".
In Painter, all tools are found in the Tools palette. There's only one tool for painting and drawing and that's the Brush tool.
There's a letter key assigned to each tool in the Tools palette. For instance, B key for Brush tool, G key for Grabber tool, M key for Magnifier tool, and so on.
If you mean there are no keyboard shortcuts to select brush variants, that's right, there aren't. In Painter 8, there are over 400 brush variants in the default Painter 8 brush library and many more on Painter 8 CD 2. It would be impossible to have a keyboard shortcut for each brush variant.
However, in Painter 7 and earlier versions, and in Painter 8.1 (with the 8.1 patch installed), you can set up a Custom Palette containing your most used brush category icons, main menu command buttons, and palette menu command buttons. If you want to understand how this works, download the updated Painter8UserGuiide.pdf and read about Creating Custom Palettes... at:

Hi TODDLER,
Again, this question and other Painter questions would be better posted in their own threads with appropriately descriptive subject lines.
This thread is to share Painter 8 Tricks and Tips.
Since the answer to this question is short and we're already off topic in this thread.
There is no Corel Painter 10.
The current version is Corel Painter 8.

Hey, quick question.
In painter 8, I have a hard time accuarately painting in things like buildings or other rectacular stuff (stuff with straight lines). In photoshop I ususally first make a selection with the polygonal lasso tool, but in painter that isn't there.
Also, is there a way to tilt tools like the palette knife? I love that tool, but the fact that only horizontals are available limits its possibilities.......
Any suggestions?

Hi Chris;
Please see this thread (http://www.indeptharts.com/viewtopic.php?t=804).
In addition, right clicking/control clicking on the canvas with the Brush Tool selected will bring up a contextual menu with various options including increasing/decreasing brush size.
Also, individual brush sizes could be scripted as presets and selected from a custom palette.
If you click on the Help menu in Painter 8 and select 'Help Topics', the last item in the topics is Keyboard Shortcuts.

Here's my settings, and i feel like i can do almost anything i need with only oils.
Edit - Preferences - Brush Tracking...
Pressure Scale : 0.80
Pressure Power : 2.00
Edit - Preferences - Operating System...
Maximum memory for Painter : ON
Free memory for Printing : OFF ( if you don't print... make it off )
-----------------
This done, you shouldn't worry about the settings too much, focus on your brushes.
The ones i use :
( Large surface )
Oil - Opaque Bristle Spray
Oil - Opaque Flat
Oil - Opaque Round
( Details )
Oil - Smeary Bristle Spray
Oil - Smeary Flat
Oil - Smeary Round
Some times i use Acrylics ( Blending with strong colours ) and Palette Knifes ( for background textures )
Now with these Brushes, i can tweek their : Size / Resat / Feature
Size - Well a lot of people are having trouble with the Painter LAG, but i usualy start off with a smaller resolution to work with the background, using big brushes. Then when im good to go i boost up the reso and work on my focused points. ( Any size can do, it depends on how big you plan on working )
Resat - Like Davi said/explained , it's awesome if you plan on building up colours quickly. +Resat = strong strokes / -Resat = Slower or Weaker strokes but better result if you seek to blend the whole thing. ( Between 10% to 80% is good )
Feature - This changes the space between the ''dots'' or ''lines'' on your brush.+Feature = Big space and more texture / -Feature = More flat and uniform. ( Between 1.0 and 5.0 is usualy what i work with... but for hair maybe, you would go up to 8.0... )
----------------------
EDIT : typos... ima retard.
Anyway, that's my 2 cent.
I'm all for comments.

This could be a little late a reply .. but anyway .. Use the pen tool to create a shape and convert it into a selection. Round about polygon lasso tool.
You cant tilt the palette knife but you can tilt the canvas with the space/alt pressed.

first thing check that the brush tracking is set right, this will make a big difference to the way your brushs work.
I guess its really up to you how you use them .. there are tons of tutorials on the net. I find water colors a little tricky to use sometimes, they have a few quircks.

That's like asking a traditional artist what materials to use to create realistic art. It could be done with any number of options.
Painter also offers us a lot of options, and the only way to find out what you're going to like using is to experiment.
You could ask a specific artist what he or she uses in Painter.. for a specific piece of art. They might remember, and then again they might not remember each and every detail, which brush variants, what setting adjustments they made, which Papers, what setting adjustments they made to the Papers, and so on.
Though some artists say they use only one or two simple brush variants, that's pretty limiting if you want to learn how to make Painter work for you.
You might as well stick with a program that doesn't offer the advanced brush technology Painter offers, or the wide array of user options Painter offers.
I doubt this is all Anry uses to paint his beautiful paintings, but in his Tyrael Knight Painter script, it looks like he uses the Painter 7 Brushes' Round Camelhair at sizes roughly between 20 and 30, for the entire painting which is done on a 9000 x 6000 pixel 72 ppi Canvas, entirely painted on the Canvas.
Other artists use several brush variants in a single painting, often adjusting the settings as they work, and sometimes use their own custom brush variants to get just the effects they want.
There's a brush library created by Chris Cimonetti called Fine Art 2 that contains Chris' custom acrylics and oils variants. It can be downloaded on my PixelAlley site (URL below my signature) and loaded into Painter 7 or Painter 8.
First, though, open a large white Canvas and, with the default Painter Brushes library loaded, test each brush category and all of it's brush variants from the top of the list to the bottom of the list. When you find something you like, take notes, then open the Brush Creator and study the settings in each of the Stroke Designer tab's sections.
After you have a fairly good idea of how each of the default Painter Brushes library's brush variants works, or at least how the brushstrokes look, then download Chris Cimonetti's Fine Art 2 brush library, load it, open a large white Canvas and test all of it's brush variants.
That will teach you a lot, if you spend the time looking at the brush variants' settings in the Brush Creator, Stroke Designer tab's sections and comparing them to begin getting a rough idea of what the brush controls do to make a brush variant work a certain way.
Don't expect to learn Painter right away. It doesn't happen.. to anyone. Pace yourself, be patient, and experiment a lot.
Read the Sticky thread at the top of this forum and make a habit of following those suggestions:
Keeping Painter 6, Painter 7, and Painter 8 Running Smoothly
Experiment, practice, and most of all have fun!

Lynda.com has a tutorial video for Painter 8 and i think they just busted one out for Painter 9. They're pricy though. I got one for Painter 8 and i wasn not able to get through it. It's nerarated by 2 women that put you to sleep with their crappy paintings of flowers and constant repeating of the word "Swell". The information is useful, especially if you're just a beginner with the program, but it will take some effort to get through the tutorials.

Post painter8 tricks and tips here.
Grey scale armor you say?
Try this brush setting out:
Gouche: Opaque smooth (any size)
:: Change the resat to 10 and pick black or white.
Resat makes the color of the stroke change by useing the color under it. So, if you pick black and you do one stroke on white it will become 10% grey; If you do a stroke on that stroke it will be 20% grey; If you change your color back to white and do a stroke on the 20% grey you will drag it down to 10%. So, this will allow you the ability to buildup and build down your greyscale at warp speed.
I have a little problem with painter 8 and I hope you can help me.

I created a (nearly) clean airbrush for painter IX:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/airbrush.jpg
The lower example was created with my airbrush, the upper example was created with the normal "digital airbrush" from painter IX. It is at 25% zoom when zoomed in to 100% the new airbrush looks like the one in photoshop at 100% zoom (so still a bit of grain).
EDIT:
You can download this brush here: www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/airbrush.zip
for questions don't ask them in this thread, go there instead:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43802
Extract it into following folder:
Windows - /Documents and Settings/[User Name]/Application Data/Corel/Painter IX/Brushes/[Brushlibrary Name]/[Brushcategory Name]/
Mac - /Users/[User Name]/Library/Application Support/Corel/Painter IX/Brushes/[Brushlibrary Name]/[Brushcategory Name]/
Additional Info about this Brush:
The reason why the normal airbrush looks crappy is because the normal brushdab is not smooth and the spacing settings really amplifys this effect.
Please tell me if it works fine on your painter too, I didn't test it with other brushtracking settings or with an intuos airbrush.
Thx jin for the info. :)

Hi johanna,
Since this is a thread for Tricks and Tips, in the future please post your questions in a new thread so they'll be noticed by more members and you'll have a better chance of getting them answered.

The Painter IX Application folder is read only, so Painter IX stores custom settings and custom files in the User folder. You'll find your custom brush variant in the appropriate brush library located here:
Windows - /Documents and Settings/[User Name]/Application Data/Corel/Painter IX/Brushes
Mac - /Users/[User Name]/Library/Application Support/Corel/Painter IX/Brushes
Copy the .XML brush variant file to a new folder somewhere outside of the User folders, Zip the file and upload it to your server, then post the URL to the Zip file here.
When you post the URL to the ZIP file, also explain where the .XML file should be placed in order to make it available to use in Painter IX. That would be in an existing brush library's existing brush category folder.
It can be placed in the brush library's brush category folder in either of the following locations as Painter IX should automatically place it in the User folder if you don't do that yourself:
Application folder - Corel > Corel Painter IX > Brushes
User folder - (see location above for Windows or Mac)

Is there any way to draw straight lines by holding down a button (like holding down 'shift' in photoshop?)
I think I read somewhere that this was supposed to work in Painter 8 as well, but I've never found anything.

There is a way:
Either shift (but thats only horizontals and verticals)
or by pressing V (its the standard hotkey for activate the straight line mode in painter)

G = Grabber
B = Brush
- Most helpful ones to me.
Zak, In IX it's diagonal too, isn't it in 8?

Alright, I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I don't feel like creating a whole new thread about a small question.
It's about Painter 8, btw.
Since a while I have noticed that when I for example change the size of a brush (to for example 4,7) or the feature (to for example 2,9), it automatically rounds the number to below (I would get 4,0 and 2,0). I usually use the slide menu, but it also rounds off when I type an exact number.
This is very annoying, because size matters when working such small brushes...
I thought it'd have to do with the 'brush size increment' in the edit > preferences > general. But that is already set to 1 pixel and can't be set smaller (not to mention it doesn't matter when I change the size with that slide bar).
Weird thing is, I have no idea how this happened. It suddenly happened, while before that I could set everything to a tenth unit precise.
Does anyone have any idea as to why or how this happened and foremost how to get rid of it :\. Thanks very much if you know the answer...
btw, my English is quite sucky at times...

im running painter 9 so im pretty uneducated in regards to earlier versions of painter. but in painter nine what i did to learn basic shortcut keys was simply press buttons and see what happened. and from that extremely scientific method ive learned a good bit of useful ones. (some were already listed so sorry for repost) B = brush (holding shift for 90 degree of 45 degree straight lines) V =straight line brush (holding shift after you place initial star point for 90 degree of 45 degree straight lines)
spacebar =grabber spacebar + alt =rotate page spacebar+ctrl = zoom in spacebar+ctrl+alt = zoom out ctrl+alt (drag) =change brush size [ = -1.0 brush size ] = +1.0 brush size F = layer adjuster tool L = lasso (R and O for rectange and oval selection)
well those are the ones that i find myself using the most.
earlier there was a post about the P = pen shortcut key and finding no good use for it. thanks to JIN (thanks a ton) you can draw a path and with the align to path option can draw that exact line with pressure sensitivity. i now use that shortcut a lot.
use brushes from different categoryies? drag them off of the "brush variant" icon onto your background and create custom pallete to quickly change from one to another.

This is an excellant thread. I am glad to have found it! I live for keyboard shortcuts. Work is so much more efficient when you use both hands. F for layer adjuster/image mover, W for magic wand selection, C for crop, T for text, K for paint bucket fills, Ctrl+K for preferences, and of course the best one that I found was Ctrl+Alt to quickly resize you current brush (as someone else mentioned already).

You don't need this thread to learn Painter keyboard shortcuts. They're available via Help > Help Topics and in the hard copy User Guides along with answers to most other questions that come up.
The keyboard shortcuts vary slightly with each Painter version. For instance:
In Painter 5, Painter 6 and Painter IX, Ctrl/Command+Alt/Option is used to change brush size.
In Painter 7 and Painter 8, Ctrl/Command+Shift+Alt/Option is used to change brush size.

Hi Marleen,
I understand that there is a problem with these keys when using French and German keyboards. Here (http://groups.google.com/group/corel.graphic_apps.painter/browse_frm/thread/66e7602036b3ae94/ebb58a42c2eacac5?tvc=1&q=german+keyboard+shortcut+group%3Acorel.graphic_a pps.painter&hl=en#ebb58a42c2eacac5) is the relevant thread which may be of use.

Is there a way where you can switch back from Photoshop CS2 and Painter IX with out losing hue and saturation in the paintings? I basically need to know what file do I have to save out as in Painter IX to bring it in Photoshop CS2? Or have they not made this compatible yet for both programs?

You need to set your color management policies in both Photoshop and Painter to the same settings in order to view images with the same onscreen color. Once this is established, save your images in the PSD format. PAinter embeds profiles in ONLY the PSD format.
In the chart below, I've set up my working space as AdobeRGB. If you prefer another working space, be sure to set it to be the same in both apps.
Monitor calibration is a key ingredient in establishing consistent color, as well.

When you are working in high resolution (like tegehel has to work for professional pieces) you are going to get lag...it's inevitable. One thing I have found that helps (this is a side note) if you are using win xp...create a seperate logon for just when you are painting. Over time if that's the only thing you ever do with that logon name xp will start to allocate all ram to it, etc...)
What does it mean to create a separate logon? And does it work for Painter 9.5 as well? I fight with Painter slowing down over a large image at the moment.

Hello
There good books up the market, about painter and I have there three buyed by amezon.I have painter the full version and it work great. You must see up the web for filters and that work great for photo's. And with desaturate's it is difficult to explain but corel give you a good help.
Have a nice day with painter
Hi there,
In Painter 8, I can't figure out how to simply desaturate using a (photo?) tool.

I understand that holding down *Shift* is supposed to cause your brush tool to draw in angle increments, (vertically, horizontally, etc.)
However for some odd reason, that shortcut seems to have no effect for me! All the other shortcuts work fine, I can navigate, etc. Even according to the help-topics it should be so, but when I hold shift while using the brush tool, it is still free hand!
Anyone else with this problem?
BTW: This is an excellent thread, and has been very helpful in all other regards!

Jorx,
Using the Shift key to paint straight lines is pretty limited anyway since it only allows us to paint horizontal, vertical, and 45 degree angle lines.
Instead, click the V key to paint Straight Line Strokes:
1. Click at the beginning point of the line, then click and hold approximately where you want the line to end.
2. Before letting go, drag the ending point to the exact spot where you want the line to end. (While you're dragging the ending point, you'll see a thin "wire" indicating the line so you can tell where it will be when you let go.)
3. Let go to end that line.
4. Click and hold again at a new ending point to continue the line at another angle, drag to place that new ending point exactly where you want it, then let go to complete the second connected straight line.
5. Repeat Step 4 to continue drawing connected straight lines.
6. Click the V key again to begin a new straight line in a different location.
7. Click the B key to return to Freehand Strokes.

I have the "[ and ]" set as the buttons on my pen tool so i can quickly change brush size. This works very well on my crap toshiba laptop where I only need to press and hold the pent tool button and the sizes zoom along. Does anyone know how to set the buttons to continually increment with a press and hold? On my desktop it moves one size per press.....which is very slow. Any ideas?

I have a question regarding notifications from this topic - I get some from time to time (just got one now), but see no real posts added. What's going on?
Idea - it would be good to change the topic name from "Painter 8" into "Painter" alone, since we've got Painter 12 ATM. Or pass here a link to a newer Painter topic if there is one. But a general Painter topic would be the best, as for example I am still using Painter 9.5, while trial of Painter 12 with a really nice looking layout worked strangely on my computer and got kick out quickly.
