I just want peoples opinions here:

Your friend wants to check out your cd rom drive and see something about it. There's currently nothing wrong with it, he just wants to look at something. He opens up your computer and is messin around inside for about 15 minutes or so. closes it up. Turns out the motherboard is fried. It's his fault, he didnt have his hand grounded when messing with it. You have to get it fixed. It costs you $300. Do you have him pay for it, or do you eat the total cost of it yourself? (or split the cost, whatever). what seems most logical to you?

The problem is either a fried mother board (which would be his fault), or a messed up graphics card (which wouldnt be his fault).

As for the two of you, you can both financially pay for it.

I ask because this recently happened to me. My friend says he'll cover the cost if it's his fault (fried motherboard); and he won't pay for it if it's not his fault (messed up graphics card); and we both agreed on that. My brother and father say that I should pay for it, regardless. Apparently I'm a "bad person" if I let him cover the cost of it.

What do you guys think? I want to see what random people think about it.

What kind of motherboard was it? Unless it's a server motherboard, I don't konw why it would possibly cost 300 dollars. I am looking on newegg.com, and very few cost that much.

Or does that include the installation fee?

It was just a normal motherboard in a tower. dont remember the brand name and all that.

I just guessed a number; it's currently in the repair shop. So you figure 100ish for the new motherboard, plus paying them to install it. I (or he) could probably install it ourselves. He's a computer programmer and more computer savvy than me, so I'd probably have him install the new motherboard.

So, we're looking at a minimum of 125 (new motherboard plus 25 for the repair shop to asses the problem), up to a couple hundred (motherboard plus 25 assesment plus installation).

I'd say that the solution you and your friend came up with is completely fair and the right way to go about it.

my solution is to not let people monkey with my computer, so I guess unless you've perfected the art of time travel, that's no help to you

Random Answer

Seven, if you get the one with the sort of raffia-work base.

Otherwise, it's just shave the bottom and wring it up the mast.

I think that this is exactly the reason why I only mess with my own computers. If things go wrong (and they do… oh yes they do >_>), I pay. By the by, I think to avoid any hard feelings you could both pay for the new parts. Split it half and half to prevent finger pointing.

Also, if you want to know the model of your motherboard, you can usually find the model number near the Northbridge. You can then google the number to find the specifics. Some manufacturers have a long warranty period, so you can contact them and see if you can request an RMA. Asus, for example, has a three year warranty.

Aaaand this was my random opinion.

I think you should bash him in the face with your fried mother board and make him lick your feet! That's how you should go about it!

Woah. Wait. 300 bucks to just fix a motherboard?

A motherboard is the cheapest thing to replace so long as the chip is still good. You could spend 100 bucks on an amazing mobo.

But, you should definitely let your friend pay for it regardless of whether you fix the old (which, once it's fried, is almost impossible to do) or buy a new. He broke it. He buys it.

If he is indeed responsible, by all rights he should be paying for it. He even offered it, so what's the deal?

You know, I meant to come right back and make a less cryptic comment. But you know life: always getting in the way.

Anyway, if you'd asked him to check your innards, it would be on you. But you didn't. You and he seem to be on the same page, which is cool. With regard to how your dad feels, you should be able to generate some analogy related to something closer to his heart (e.g. a buddy wants to check how the high-speed bumper bolts are aligned in his '63 Impala and accidently strips the fifth gear on his flux capacitor).

'Cause I don't think your dad is going to listen to a bunch of opinions from the internet.

I don't know why, though...

hey, thanks for the replies:

Dogfood: "'Cause I don't think your dad is going to listen to a bunch of opinions from the internet."

haha no, he's not going to. I just wanted to get some random opinions from people who dont really know me... so I could see if my viewpoint really was craaazzzzyyyy or if he was just being a douche.
". . .analogy related to something closer to his heart. . ." did that, but he's hard headed and said "that's different, though." I'm not gonna try to convince him that I'm right, I just wanted to see if random people thought I'm wrong!

jeri:
"He even offered it, so what's the deal?" Exactly my point! haha.

magicgoo:
"Woah. Wait. 300 bucks to just fix a motherboard?" That was just a random guess, I don't really know. I was figuring 100 for the new motherboard plus another 100-200 for them to install the new one. I could probably do it myself though, eh?

Spacemanchuck:
I already did that! And then he powerbombed me through 2 tables and smashed my head in with a chair. It was a jolly night.

ceberae:
yeah, I probably won't let anyone mess with my computer anymore, even if I trust them. I figured he does that stuff all the time, works on computers for a living... but even professionals make mistakes!
And thanks, I'll look into the warranty. It should still be under warranty, I think. Asus sounds very familiar.

Yeah, 300's definitely waaaay above what you'd need for a new motherboard. I'd say (after doing some better price research ;) ) let your friend cover it. If you feel guilty, at least split the cost between the two of you. And if its not the motherboard, no problem! Just don't let anyone who's not getting paid for it open up your case :P
