Hello, Hi, and Good day to all of you on the board!

I am Hannah Spute, currently attending SCAD (http://www.scad.edu) pressing into my major as a sequential artist. I do freelance artwork on the side. My hobbies include artwork, plants, and studying animals.

Favorite themes? Fantasy and Ancient Greek and Roman Culture

Favorite interests? Anyone who knows me knows that I am a dragon fanatic. But my interests actually vary. I enjoy portrait drawing, life drawing, animal studies and plant studies, occasionally cars (when an RX7 or Corvette rolls around, even old timey cars and trucks). I am always open for ideas.

My inspirations? Michelangelo, Alphonse Mucha, Mike Turner, Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell, Jaime Sidor, Linsey Huish, Christy Grandjean, Brett Booth, Jess Booth, Heather Leuterman, many ancient italian sculptors, and most of all...mother nature. I give credit to all of these artists since they are the people who of course, inspire me and have helped me become who I am.

Likes and Dislikes:
I like it when people do their best to become who they are. When they can agree to their faults and understand that they are not perfect. I also like it when people give credit to those they were inspired and helped by.
I don't like it when an artist cannot work on their own and must copy or become a sheep to be noticed by others. Who's pretentious arrogance sit behind a smiling mask while others are oblivious. I dont like it when people cannot "grow their own talent", but instead thrive off of the talents of others to get a name for themselves.

-----

Aside from that, Hi, hello, and I'm glad to be here ;) Lookin' forward to seeing everyone's art, as well as getting some help with my own!!

Greetings, Hannah, and everyone else!

I'm a newbie here as well. This is my first post. SCAD - that's Savannah, right? I attended CalArts, where I majored in character animation. Now I'm between jobs. One of my films and lots of my artwork are on my website. I haven't been drawing a whole lot recently, because my job hunt and my hobbies (writing) keep me too busy.

Cool inspiractions. I am also very inspired by natural landscapes, especially the sky. Just last weekend, my boyfriend and I took a road trip into Death Valley. That was quite beautiful.
I'm also a fan of the artist admins on this site. :)

How was Cal arts for you? I've heard both good and bad, a bit pricey.
Ditto with the drawing. I'm busy packing to move into an appartment as well as getting ready to take a trip to Utah. So, any artwork I do is just sketches :\

CalArts was pricey, but I guess all private art schools are to some degree.

The good = a very nice character animation department. Every student is encouraged to make one short film per year, which they can enter into festivals and such. The teachers are mostly industry professionals.

The bad = it is extremely hard for a student majoring in character animation to learn computer skills and techniques. The school seems to be run by technophobes, or just people who have been out of the industry for so long that they no longer understand what the typical requirements are. I had to jump through major hoops in order to take a class in SoftImage. There are students who never got a chance to take computer classes at all. That's hard after graduation, when the only companies that seem to be hiring are videogame developers.

Have fun on your trip to Utah. :)

Scad probably would have been a better choice. Although I dislike the way the college is run, it's one of the very few colleges who has almost any art major you can think of. Our animation department is both technical and manned work. People choose later in thair major which is most inportant to them and go into that direction.

Scad is also one of the least expensive (or maybe now anymore), but it's $30,000 a year. A little cheaper than $56 grand and up that I've choked on as I overlooked other private colleges.

The downsides to the college, as with all, is the administration. It's not a safe city though :\ Problems have occurred but I wont get into them.

Maybe you should look into SCAD for the things you missed out on?

That sounds better- tech and traditional art together.
I chose CalArts mainly because of the character animation department. I've always been interested in films and animation, and many accomplished animators have come from CalArts. The animation teachers were great. I just wish there had been more emphasis on learning 3D computer skills.

But the people I've known who went to SCAD have spoken highly of the sequential art program. It looked like fun. Was the emphasis there more on animation/ film making, or on comic book illustration?

The CalArts admin was also ridiculous. I have no idea where the funds were going, but they were not going to faculty or equipment. The equipment WAS good, but it was bought from privately donated grants.

The setting of CalArts is very safe and suburbian. I did attend a pre-college art program at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. That was in a dangerous neighborhood.

Maybe you should look into SCAD for the things you missed out on?

I'm still looking for a job in the animation industry... not quite ready to go back to school. I think if I did, I would major in something completely different. Thanks for all the info!
