Im kinda new to this site, and it may seem like a weird question, but i wanted to ask all the professional concept artists out there how long it takes for them to do a concept drawing, and also how long they have been drawing, and any other information you can give me on becomin a concept artist. This would be very much appreciated.

If I told you it took 20 hours to do a concept drawing would you draw for exactly that long and then on the 20 hour mark suddenly stop?
Common newbie mistake, it's not about time, at all. That's the first lesson.
EDIT/ unless you're working on a drawing due in a short time, then maybe you shouldn't be in that job..

Draw a bunch. The faster the better, don't bother comparing yourself, just do it as fast as YOU can. Some concept artists have been drawing since they were kids, others since they were in Highschool, and other since they got out of highschool. It varies greatly. Just draw.

yeah what pixeldragoon said... go your own pace... some are faster at one level and slower on a nother.... in the end it doenst really matter.

if doing art for life is your goal, try to learn as much as you can and dont worry about time... never worry about time...youll become faster by things becoming your second nature. take your time... give your best.

Pixeldragon is right, the only way to get your speed up is to get experience under your belt.

Speed comes with practice and time, the guys who can pump out insanely fast concept sketches have spent a lot of time honing their skills over the years. I like to think of those quick 1-hour speedpaints as taking "exactly 1 hour and 13 years" to complete, with the 13 years being all the training leading right up to the 1-hour piece.

So don't worry about how long it takes you to do work, you get faster with every piece. Soon you'll be wondering why it's taking you an hour to do something when you want to draw it in half the time, when only a month before the same piece would've taken you all day.

It takes as long as a ball of string, as my animation teacher says.

They say a painter paints for 30 years until they begin to really paint.

Mark kinda pined the tail on the donkey! Ive been drawing(sculpting painting making snowmen ect) my entire life, it is all I ever wanted to do with my life, I'm 24 and have more than 24 more years before I will ever be to the point that I want to be.

Look at some of the work you see posted here, amazing mind blowing stuff, I cant do that shit! YET! So, I will practice, every day! I will go to art school, which I am! And I wall draw for years and years until I get to where I want to be. Being an artist is a lifestyle and if you choose it you have to work your little greasy nuby fingers to the bone!

And you might work on your gramer, since I aint, aint gonna get you very far in the game art industry. Just a suggestion. I shouldnt talk shit, my gramer is horrid and I spell at a 5th grade level... But you shouldn't...

Actually, I have stupendous and quite superlative grammar, I am just a lazy and lethargic typer, as far as chat rooms are concerned. That includes blogs, forums, or any other form of "chatting," so, no offense, my good man, but, since i have such an expansive vocabulary, I feel, as far as this forum goes, I think I can say whatever the F*** I WANT! Lol, I'm only kidding, except for the good grammar part. That is true. I mean, how many people here actually know what lethargic means, and how to spell it? I think that counts for something.

That's very offensive.

Well, now I'm incensed, and I despise posting in the lounge as it usurps my time from being a productive and useful member of this forum. The mere fact that ignorance is assumed and you don't have the manners to use proper language and punctuation just goes to show everyone who happens to take the time out of their day to read your posts, that you aren't a clear thinker and that you think less of them. The state of our present society is appalling, heaven forbid that one turns off the television when eating or that a person graces our presense with tact and intergrity, no matter what the forum. And forum has more than one connotation, since we're assuming ignorance here. Post some art, let's see where you are in your quest to become a concept artist. And use the search function, I've seen at least 3 versions of this thread in my stint here, and each has been treated with less and less dignity. We have to judge you based on your words and art alone, so make the best of your chosen medium.

Edit: This rant wasn't really directed at anyone, its just the fact tutu brought it up with such a flair that I felt compelled to to respond.

Maaaaan, chill the hell out. This is the internet. I doubt anyone really gives a crap about how ppl talk on here. Eiy cud tawlk liek diss eff eiy whonted tew (I could talk like this if I wanted to). And like i said, I do have a good vocabulary. im jsut a lazy ass typer at times and dont really feel the need to use it in an internet forum. I doubt anyone is gonna go "ooooh, he has a big vocabulary" if i use the word "cataclysmic" or even "bombastic." In the end, maaaan just chill the hell out. I know better than to talk to ppl (let alone write) in a professional with words like 'aint' or 'naw' or 'cuz' or any other slang terms or colloquialisms (hah, another big word). Once again, maaaan just chill out.

Well actually there are alot of people from all around the world on CA. Alot from Europe and Asia who have to have translation software, using all of this wacky internet jargon may throw them off.

I would suggest considering the risks involved with taking artwork too seriously.
You may give it your best shot and become successful, yet on the other hand years of trying may end in disaster ruining your life. It's a gamble, some people have a desire to do something yet just do not have the genius. This field of endeavor is extremely competitive and monetary success is at odds similar to winning a million dollar lottery. There are thousands of people out there trying artwork and never really finding a way to make a living or monetary success from this pursuit. Your best off to take it as a hobby on your free available time, if it leads to something, well fine, yet do not take unnecessary risks when the realities of life and survival need attention and consumption of your time.
Sadly the realities of the human condition need consideration. I could walk down any street anywhere in the world and see a multitude of vendors and business people selling food products. People need food and are willing to pay for this since it is necessary for survival. Sadly what they eat today will end up in the toilet tomorrow with nothing substantial in materialism resulting from what they are willing to pay for. Seems like a waste yet you will always be able to sell food since the human condition demands this for nourishment and our survival. On the other hand artwork is a luxury most people will not pay a penny for. You need to find that special place somewhere if you can even find a buyer. Most people that attempt artwork fail and their hard work and effort goes unrecognized or in the garbage. Unlike food people may not continuously come back to buy more artwork since disposable income for this type of product is generally limited and based solely upon a personal attraction towards a style and subject matter within an art piece. If you are simply looking for a good way to make a living this is probably not the type of work to pursue. If you have a passion for artwork, starting as a hobby and hoping it will lead to something is the practical approach.
