it would help if u tell us what this logo is for. what company what they do... i always feel logos have more impact if they are in flat colors and more graphic. this doesnt give me a 'logo' feel

Well,
this is a graphic that will go in the top left corner of a mediawiki site. So in some ways I was modeling it after the mediawiki gerber daisy and the Wikipedia Globe, since those are images which people are used to seeing on a mediawiki style page.
Project Altura is a cooperative online literary endeavor. The genre is steam/clock punk, hence the cog. The setting is a foreboding gassy planet, hence the gaseous solar/globe shape.
I felt that this full color image could translate into something much more flat and iconic, since it could have a readily recognizable outline...
anyway, that’s what I thinking

Here (http://projectaltura.info/index.php?title=Main_Page) is the site, though it is not even close to being finished. It might help to see it in context.

ahh ic...
at first glance it looked like the bottom of a orange juice bottom cap.
im not very good with logos but i still think u might wanna try making the logo more graphic and flat and see how that looks. gas can still be conveyed thru flat shapes.
i guess my crit is that it looks too rendered to be a logo
also have u thought about making the brown rim blue instead? since orange and blue are complementary. just a thought

While I agree with Koncept that logos should be more 2D and graphic, the logo that you have used on the site doesn't seem too overly 'rendered'. If you are going to stick with this style then I suggest altering the image to blend it in with the rest of the site, rather than having those messy edges around it.

Remember when it comes to a logo/corporate identity it must read well on stationary, business cards, billboard, buses and park benches. Do you have any rough sketches other than just finished logo ideas? I would do about 10 roughs and pick the best 5 out of those and flesh them out.

I have to agree with Koncept, I think it would look better flatter, on the website it takes up too much of the attention if you draw a picture that's 90% flat and one piece is really 3D it Really stands out, that's kinda what your image is doing on your site - the rest is flat, that's really saturated and dimentional.
