Hey guys

Heres a portrait i did today of a colleague. We'll be using these for our new website, so ill be doing one of each of our studio members, probably about 6 all up. Ill post them here as i complete them.

Hope you enjoy.

Hey Form,
I like the portrait and I think this is really cool idea with these blue eyes. If you want make 6 portraits, make them black and white with the colored eyes, or maybe other one, small color accent.

Cheers

Lovely pose you drew. Too many images look forced in the posing... fake, stiff. Great job capturing the natural feel and weight of the body.

looking at this on another monitor... and it looks fking horrible... all the brushmarks are really harsh.. it looks so bad... please tell me how it looks on your monitors?

for instance, is the area under his crotch a fairly solid gradation to black (as it should be), or is it horrible and patchy? *scared*

The brushstrokes on his chest are kind off hatchy, but it doesnt bother me at all.

I love the piece, the pose is fantastic and so relaxed.

Great work

thx crash :) can i ask if ur on LCD or CRT? seems to be bugging on both my dads laptop and my own 2nd monitor (17" LCD)... I knew my 17" had notoriously bad contrast probs, but my dads VAIO i didnt expect to have issues... which gets me a bit worried.

If it appears excessively patchy to anyone could you let me know pls? i need to calibrate my monitors : /

Hey Form, I get that too. Anything I do on an LCD looks shithouse when I check it out on a CRT.

From what I can see the strokes aren't that hatchy, it looks cool :p I like how you let his irises be the only spot of colour, nice touch.

Excellent work dude :D it has a very "form" feel to it, really nice value control. And ofcourse the eyes are nice :)

The shirt and left arm are beautiful hatchingwise, but yeah, the pants look a bit messy, but I wouldn't think it's anything to change. I think it adds more than it takes away.

hey form
I like the relaxed feel of the pose too. The hatching on the BG and jeans does look pretty rough in comparison to his skin and most of the areas on his shirt- i'm looking at it via LCD...

Also, I wonder if the stomach area could be foreshortened more. It seems as though his torso should be coming toward us a little more to lead into the hips. I don't know about anyone else but it seems slightly disjointed.

The left arm is foreshortened excellently and the face is great.

I don't remember seeing your work before even though I know you've been a member here for ages so its cool (maybe you used to do SPs or something?)

iolarna - thanks man :)

rook - <3 U

pixel - thanks dude :P

expat - thanks for the reply. your crits are spot on, and i will change those things before i put the portraits on the website.

You probably know me as a fellow sydneysider.. tho u may also know me from running the old middle class, being an admin, starting Enviro of the week, organising sydney sketch meets, my sketchbook, uh... and i think we were pm'ing at some stage. We should get together for a sketch around town mate...

Im really disappointed at how this turned out... i think the problem is in the calibration of my crt which i will fix. Painting on laptop lcd at the moment. Lets hope the next turns out better
