Greetings everyone, am I the only one in North Carolina? There has to be at least one or two more people. Come on, admit it. I took the first step, your not alone.

I'm in North Carolina! I was thinking of starting a North Carolina thread, but like you said, I think there are only a few people that live here. Besides you, so far I've only seen two other members from NC. We are a rare bunch indeed! :^^:

Hey westendgirl, thanks for posting. I was starting to think I was alone! Well, if there are only a few of us then we need to stick together. We can't let all those folks in New York and California have all the fun.

I live in Wilmington.

Excellent, so what does everyone specialize in? I create using traditional mediums. I'm afraid computers are the devil when it comes to art. Of course, that's just for me. I mostly create illustrations with graphite, ink, or acrylic. I recently became interested in concept art, so I'm exploring that as a possible job opportunity as well.

I don't have a specialty per say.

Look at my gallery, and be the judge: http://www.m00t.net/gallery

You have some nice images. Are you employed in the arts, or do you just work for fun?

Im from Greensboro and currently reside in Reidsville. I do both traditional and digital art. I really dont have any of my work uploaded. Most of my traditional work I do is assignments from art class (im still in highschool). I use whatever medium I need to get the effect i want. At home I do my digital work, I 3D model and do digitial painting. I also draw alot, pretty much every day.

It sounds as though you have a good start, Buckweisel. Do you plant to attend art school?

Is anyone going to Heroe's Con. in Charlotte?

Analoxe
April 11th, 2006, 03:21 PM
moot.xk- Nice artwork and man, I wish I was in Wilmington right now!

Buckweisel- Sounds like you're getting a lot of work done too, can't wait to see some of it if you ever get an online gallery!

As for me, I do most of my work in traditional mediums, but I do some 3D and I'm slowly getting better at using photoshop and painter to color stuff with. I signed up for the Ladies thunderdome, so I hope I can still manage to create something good even with my beginner skillz.
BTW Grendel Grack once again you keep on reading my mind!! I'm planning to go to the heroes con and I was going to post asking people if anyone else was going. That would be cool if there were others on Conceptart planning to go- Maybe then we could all meet together and I don't know... have a concept art cookout or something, hehe :yayca: :D

Yeah, westendgirl, that sounds excellent. I'm going to be selling artwork in indie island all three days. You should stop by and check out my stuff. I will be with two other artists under the title Counter Productive. You can view my art on www.darktreestudios.com

If anyone else is going to Heroe's Con, we should meet up!

Oh and I'm participating in the ladies thunderdome as well. I think it will be one hell of a show. I'm looking forward to seeing some great stuff.

Grendel - I'm an art student at a community college.

Westendgirl- Thanks, Wilmington is nice.

BuckWeisel - I'm considering the design+art degree at NC state.

No hero's convention for me. Charlotte is a 3 hour drive and I'm too busy with school and my weekends of dancing.

Awww, c'mon moot.xk. It's not a party until we can get at LEAST three people.
You're gonna be missing out. I guess this just leaves all the pressure on Buckweisel. Let's see, moot.xk already used school as an excuse so you have to come up with a new one. Come on westendgirl, back me up here.

Hey... some of us have other extra curricular activities. I'm an underground dancer and weekends are my time to bust out. Expression comes in many different shapes and sizes.

I go to CLT sometimes to hit up clubs and meet with other dancers, so I'll try to arrange something with you guys one day.

You guys are always welcome at my place in Wilmington also. We have plenty of inspirational landscape.

Yes, It's a comic convention held in charlotte on June 30th to July 2nd at the charlotte convention center. Their website is here (http://www.heroesonline.com/index2.htm). You should try and make it, and no kidnapping is involved! ;) But it would be nice to find other CA members that are going because that would make it all the more fun.

moot.xk, sorry to hear you won't be going then. Maybe next year? Well it's nice to know at least I have connections to someone at the beach! :teeth:

Okay, so that leaves me going, grendel grack will be there, and maybe buckweisal provided he doesn't need a permission slip for his parents to sign. heh just kidding, but seriously though buckweisal you should go with your friends or something, you'll probably enjoy it! So perhaps I'll just post in the lounge to see if anyone else is going and maybe we can draw in some more members.

Grendel Grack

no kidnapping is involved! ;)

I promise nothing!

If you're in to comic books, buckweisel, then Heroe's Con is for you. Just be aware that there is an admission fee, so if you're tight on cash you may want to sell a kidney. They bring a nice price on the black market these days.

moot.xk. forgive my ignorance, but what is underground dancing? It sounds uncomfortable.

Sorry to keep asking questions, I just like to plan out stuff like this really good.

What day are we meeting up and are yall planning on going more than one day.

But to keep this thread slightly interesting and not full of my Q&A, I think we should introduce ourselves a tad more formally/indepth.

Grendel Grack
April 14th, 2006, 08:14 PM
Hey, Buckweisel, ask as many questions as you want. No one's keeping track. I'll be camping out at my table all three days of Heroe's Con. You are all welcome to use that as a meeting place, or we can pick some kind of landmark. I forget what my table number is, so I'll have to get back to you about that.

As far as my personal info is concerned, My name is Kim and I'm starting out in the illustration business plus I do fine art on the side. I enjoy all types of anime, RPGs, and comics to a certain degree. Like Buckweisel, I've been involved with art all my life. Drawing is my pleasure but I also paint as well. I prefer traditional mediums especially graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic although I have experience with a wide array of different materials.

Grendel Grack
April 18th, 2006, 11:54 AM
Come on folks! Let's not let this thread die. We're a rare flock of birds and we need to stick together! Let's brainstorm about some topics we can discuss:

What is the future of the Arts in the southeast?

Do you think that it is necessary to move to New York or California to succeed?

What do you guys want to do at Heroes Con?

Would anyone like to start a NC sketchbook thread?

Does your family support your art?

I could go on like this forever. PLEASE, someone write back!

s.ketch
April 18th, 2006, 03:59 PM
1) I beleive the arts in the southeast will continue to be craft-oriented rather than just the fine arts. pottery, textiles, metal working, landscaping, and small crafts is what I think is the most common art forms found in the southeast. Also I know NC does alot with pottery and the performing arts. I would hope that the arts in NC evolve with technology cause its hard finding a job as a CG artist here.

2)No. While these places offer many employment oppurtunities for artists of all kinds, (i only can speak educatedly from a digital standpoint) the amount of game companies and animated movie studios are growing all over the country and soon there will plenty of places to go other than NY or CA.

3)I wouldnt mind spending some time looking through comic books. Im a fan of comic art and I would like to bring home some inspiration. We can all go eat dinner or somthing too.

4)Yes thats a good idea. Ill contribute when I can.

5)Yep. My dad backs my art and choice in a art related carreer.

Grendel Grack
April 20th, 2006, 10:08 PM
Hey Buckweisel, I agree that the south focuses mainly on craft-oriented art. Unfortunately, I don't see this changing anytime soon. With the onslought of retired Floridians that have invaded our state, I fear that NC wil become the craft capital of the world. This isn't bad, except for the floridians, but if people like us attempt to make it in this state, landing a job in a fine/design art area becomes that much more difficult. Some pockets of opportunity exists, but these are few and far between and generally cater to companies and organizations outside of the southeast. Thus, the job is here, but the product is sold elsewhere, therefore, not perpetuating any market in NC. It's depressing.

I think dinner would be great. I'm not too familiar with Charlotte, so if anyone has any suggestions, that would be excellent.

We need at least one more person to make the effort of a sketch thread worth our time. Although, if that doesn't happen I guess we can just post here.

Also, I'm glad to hear that your father supports your art, Buckweisel. Not too many folks have it so easy. My mom was supportive for the most part, but I had to fight tooth and nail to go to school out of state (I'm originally from Georgia).

Hey Buckweisel, sometimes it's best to be excluded. Like when everyone else at work has a stomach virus, or multi-car high way collisions. See? Just look on the bright side of things. Oh yeah, I meant to ask you, do you have any specific concepts behind the images that you posted? They all seem to be connected. I was wondering if they were all for a specific project or if they generally represented your style. Also, I just got my digital camera fixed, so I will have some stuff to post shortly. I just got done with the 3ch random topic project, so I should have some time tomorrow.

Grendel Grack
May 12th, 2006, 07:51 PM
Hey now, if you start using "I don't have enough time" as an excuse now, you'll never get through art school. You have to be a bit more creative...."I just contracted amoebic dysentary, I impaled my drawing hand on a piece of rebar, My corpus collosum is severed, now I suffer from alien hand syndrome..etc,etc."

Anyway, make time. That's the only way you'll get better. I say this out of friendly comeradere, perhaps with an intellectual British-style accent.:teeth:

Grendel Grack
May 12th, 2006, 08:36 PM
It sounds as though it is time for you to be introduced to the most socially acceptable of behavior altering substances - caffeine. Also, don't underestimate the usefullness of the recycle bin. Most of that paper in there is still perfectly usable. If you're going to pursue art as a career in NC, you're gonna have to learn to be financially resourceful.

Hello, I am Charlie and live in Raleigh, NC. I have found that there is a lacking of art related groups in NC. I would be down for a NC CA meetup from time to time just to meet up with ppl of simialar interests. I am the only person out of all my friends and family into art so it is hard for them to relate to why I am drawing all the time so I have to equate it to my cousin's scapbooking hobby or some other BS. Just would be nice to have some relatively local people to feed off of.

I really have liked the work from the people around here in NC. I figured with all the game development companies in RTP there would be more concept artists around.

I use graphite, pen and I paint in photoshop. I more or less chose graphic design so I could have a steady job, but drawing and illustration is where my heart is at.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't checked in recently. It's great to hear from some new voices!

wheezy: If you are the only artsy person you know, this needs to change. You will feel much better after meeting those of your own kind. I'm not quite sure at this point how we could manage a meeting, but perhaps we can arrange something after the holidays. If you are interested in coming to Boone (hi balsamic!) I have a show opening in January. Who can say no to free food?

Balsamic: Ahh, appstate. Not to bring you down man, but the graphics department is...how should I say this....not quite in touch with the greater world of graphic design. Of course, that is just my humble opinion. If you really want to get into illustration, you will need to fight for it. Don't just settle for graphic design. There are some professors there that can help you out, you just need to know who to ask. I'd be happy to make some recommendations if you like, just pm me. Oh yeah, I graduated from the Fine Arts dept.

I live just outside of Charlotte. Full time graphic designer although I got my BFA at UNCC in art. I do a tiny bit of freelance illustration but wish everyday to do more.

Right now I'm teaching myself the digital mediam as I've only done traditional for many years. I haven't found a medium yet I don't get attached to. My present favorite is acrylic painting with oil on top with some colored pencils thrown in and maybe some photoshop tweeks.

I'm also writing a novel and doing my own comic book 1 shot to shop around or self publish at the Hero's con this year. I've only got 8 pages left to ink and then the lettering to do.

That's about it.

Grendel Grack

Hey bfowler, thanks for stoppin' in. Congrats on the nearly published book. Hero's is a great place to launch your project. I'm hoping this year will be even bigger than last.

I'm also in the process of exploring the digital creative realm. I really suck at it at the moment, but I'm saving up for a wacom so perhaps that will help.

Hey, guys, I'm Chad. I'm glad to see there's a thread here with some North Carolinians representin'. I live in Charlotte, NC and I attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I'm doing the BFA in Illustration. I'm learning under Jamie Franki, the guy who designed the new nickel with Thomas Jefferson facing forward and the 2005 Bison nickel. Awsome stuff, let me tell you. :)

Nothing really special about me other than I'm a junior and I'm hoping to live the life of a poverished illustrator. ;)

Welcome Chad! I guess Charlotte is the only place in NC where one could make it as an illustrator, so at least you have the right town. The rest of us have to scrape out a living in the sticks. But, scaring off mountain folk with a nail-studed two-by-four really gets the creative juices flowing.

How do you like that BFA program?

Thanks for the reply, Grendel. Charlotte is aight, but it's certainly not a place I'm going to stay in forever. However, Charlotte is (and has been) going through a major change and is becoming a big area of business and arts, much like Atlanta.

At any rate, to answer your question for the BFA program. It's decent (in general), but I don't mean it in a bad way... Just like any education, it depends on what you want to get out of it. Let me see if I can word this right...

UNCC is not Ringling, SCAD or CCAD or anything, but the instructors are very knowledgable and talented and truely care about the progression of their students. I personally think that Jamie Franki is one of the more talented art instructors at UNCC. And the Graphic Design instructors are awsome folks as well. However, I (and some of my student collegues) believe that there needs to be some improvement to the requirements based on one's concentration area. For instance, the 3D requirements for BFA art students... While abstract 3D art is nice and all, I fail to see how it applies to my education as an illustrator. I would rather do a figure sculpting class rather than installation art or fibers. Or, I would rather take 3D Illustration rather than Sculpture (which focuses on abstract/geometic forms). It would just be nice to have some classes that enhance my education in my concentration rather than feeling like some of my requirements are just "fillers".

But the Illustration program overall is nice though. Basically, it's fun, but frustrating at times.

I was looking at your website. I must say, you've got some really nice work. I really like your painted works on there. Great style. ;)

Grendel Grack
January 15th, 2007, 12:36 PM
Yeah, people tend to visit and never come back. It's hard to keep up interest when no one participates. I've been neglecting the thread as well, but at least I check my subscriptions regularly.

So, what's up in Raleigh? Are you planning on going to Animazement? I haven't decided yet. I really want to go, but I'm also planning on exhibiting at Heroes and DragonCon, so I'm not sure I can afford it. My friends will probably drag me along regardless of my decision, though.

If anyone is in the Boone area check out my show at the Turching Center. My paintings are on display in the Catwalk gallery.

Anyone else have any news or events going on in NC?

Chad: Thanks for the comments, man. Maybe since all of us are scattered about the state we can plan to participate in one of the weekly activites like COW, or 3CH. Any thoughts?

WOW Animazement (http://www.animazement.com/) looks cool. I will be going to that for sure.

Grack your url seems to be down. I met another CA member here in Raleigh on IRC recently. He goes by Chirp. We should have a CA get some beers thing if you come to the Animazement event. What? Where? When? is the Dragoncon thing?

Raleigh is getting a little better now, there is a monthly Dr. Sketchies going on downtown now and some regular life study sessions at different places around town. Hard to meet others interested in art here, I am not really part of any group here, hence the reason I reach out on the internet.

Thanks for your word on my ssb and replying on here. I have now subscribed to this thread so i can see any updates coming through, that way i can keep up better myself.

Grendel,

Thanks for the reply. I have to agree, it is sort of tough to keep a thread going, but I will try my best to help keep it moving along. I think your idea of doing the weekly COW or something would be nice. However, I don't know if I can promise with certainty (is that how it's spelled?) that I'll be successful in delivering drawings, though I will try my hardest. I'm in school and I work, so the little time I do have is dedicated toward my school work. But sure, I think it's worth a shot. :)

Cheers!

Another North Carolina resident here. I have been lurking round here for many months without posting or starting a sketchbook ( I know, I know...bad me), but I hope to become more involved in the future here. I will be watching you guys to see if the NC people come out on top in those CHOW bouts. I will try to get something on here one of these days.

Oh yeah, as for what part of NC I live in, it is a very small town called Rutherfordton....Grendel, you may know it as it's not too far from Boone. Actually, I was in Boone last week, I had to go to Cheap Joe's. Good art supply stores are few and far between in these parts! Too bad I didn't know of your exhibit, I could have stopped in for a peek. How long is it going to be up?

Ok, that's all for now. Good Luck to all who participate in CHOW!

Hey guys,

sin-d: Welcome! I am familiar with Rutherfordton. I pass by there on my way to Atlanta to see the fam. I think Boone is pretty much the only place you can get art supplies until you get out of the mountains. It's kind of weird if you think about it. There are so many artists and craftsmen in the region but so few places to get supplies. I guess most people shop online.
My exhibit will be open until Feb. 2. I will have a small closing reception that evening. Stop buy, if you're in town. Glad to have a new member, start up a sketchbook! Let's see what ya' got.

Wheezy: Sorry man, but I had to bail on the CHOW. My freelance work kind of bottle-necked this week. I haven't checked the thread yet, but there was some interesting entries earlier in the week. I'll definitely want to participate again, though.

Chirp Chirp: Welcome! You don't have to be an artist to participate. Although, after browsing your sketchbook, I'm curious to know your definition of "artist." Your work looks like you have an eye for design and aesthetics to me. You should consider participating in one of the weeklies. I'll bet you'd get some great feedback from the EOW.

Check them out Chirp: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=74

Basically, you get one week to create an image for the topic. Then just post the image before the deadline. The moderators set up a poll, and the members of CA get to vote for the winner. Everyone is encouraged to post comments, and you can generaly get some helpful feedback.

Hey Buck, how did the contest go? I'd be up for a CHOW or two. Would you want to try for this week?

Also, sorry for the short notice but there is a figure drawing session tomorrow night from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at the ASU Art Dept for $2.50 if anyone is interested. I'll be there along with a few other friends. They have it every Tuesday until the end of the semester.

Wow. 2.50 for a figure drawing session. I live just east of charlotte and the closest place for figure drawing are classes in Salisbury for about 14.00 bucks for a 2 hours class and you have to sign up for about a 6 week session.

Chad - I had a number of illustration classes with Jamie Frankie. Tell him Bryan Fowler says hi. Like you say, UNCC is not Ringling but for the money it's not bad. I got my BFA in illustration from there in 99 and work fulltime as a graphic designer and do some freelance illustration.

Chirp chirp - are you working for any of the gaming companies in Raleigh? I know Epic is up there along with a couple of others. If so, I'd like to pick your brain on some stuff. Drop me an email if you can.

Yeah, we're really lucky to have such inexpensive drawing sessions. It's for the art students so keeping it cheap is kind of a necessity. I'm trying to put something in this week CHOW. I love the topic. It's one of those situations where I had an idea right away and I feel compelled to create it. Great stuff. I'll give people more heads up as we get closer to the con. I've called Heros to get my booth (they doubled the price this year to 200 bucks, ouch) If Sheldon isn't there they won't book you a booth. You have to mail or in the flyer from their website.

Honestly, I wouldn't go to a school like SCA. If you want to go the specialized school route, do Full Sail or DigiPen. Better yet, just go to a good university or art school and study there. ECU has a very good art program. UNCG does too. The School of Design at NCSU is very good. UNC is still stuck too much in old school art for art's sake, but you can't beat the UNC name brand. For pure art schools, consider places like SCAD and MCAD.

If you can't afford a pricey art or game school, then think about just buying the software and working really hard without a formal education. In this business, your portfolio is everything and you can work that to make it great without having to relocate or pay some school like SCA a fortune.

Overall, I think the University route is by far the best way to go and gives you the most back unless you're 100% you have the talent to be a great illustrator and don't really care about being well-rounded. Classes for digital tools and modeling are easy to find now, both at Universities and community colleges. Wake Tech and CPCC also have game / simulation programs now.

In the end though, everyone judges what you can do by your use of the pencil and anatomy. Everything else can be taught on the job.

I hail from Raleigh NC, and I must say I'm impressed to see this thread so saliently placed. As for schooling goes I'm at State in Communication and Art + Design. I'm mostly into low poly 3D stuff for games, but good 2D CA skills never hurt anyone right? Well, actually I'm more of a generalist. I do all sorts of stuff. From videography to writing, performing and recording songs, I have a fairly wide variety of creative skills.

kool-ka-lang: Welcome, pro artist or no, we appreciate anyone who seeks creative input here at the NC thread. Like I've said before, there are not very many of us here in the state, so we have to stick together :) Start up a sketchbook and let's see what you've got. I am always happy to give contructive criticism, if needed. Thanks for stopping by and introducing yourself! Also, I have to tell you that I laughed at "the wastelands of boredom." Wilmington can't be as bad as Boone, though. At least you're close to the beach. Out here people go to the local wal-mart for entertainment. It's quite scary.

jeunesang: Welcome! I think we have a few folks from Raleigh don't we? C'mon speak up! It's great that you have so many interests. I think that helps to maintain a high level of creativity. You tend to not get too burned out on one thing. For myself, I pretty much use any type of traditional media as I can and I have recently strarted paiting digitally, which is a blast. Glad you're here!

All: I am planning of participating in this week's COW (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=93869). The topic is quite interesting and I have already developed a story and some preliminary sketches for my entry. Anyone who wants to participate should check it out. Yeah, the beach is a pretty cool place to be. I like it here, it isn't too crowded and poluted like a big ass city, but it isn't no dead nowhere place either. and about my location thing, lol, I was just bored out of my mind that time.

What is this event you pplz are going to?

Grendel Grack
April 23rd, 2007, 01:29 PM
Wheezy: There is a meeting of the NC chapter of the IGDA at the School of Communication Arts tomorrow evening. We had to RSVP so I don't know if you can just stop by. This (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1252871&postcount=113) is one of the posts on page two with more info.

Chirp Chirp, would you know if people who didn't reserve a spot can show up?

I am completely unfamiliar with the area, so I have no idea about a meeting place. The event is at the Digital Circus campus, right? There has to be some sort of coffee shop or caffeteria or something around. Anybody know?
We are making a day trip out of our visit, so I'll be around all day before the panel starts at 7.

Chirp Chirp
April 23rd, 2007, 04:23 PM
Regarding the RSVP, it is not mandatory, Dana was just trying to get a general head count of the number of people to expect and she asked me to relay that info.

Meeting places.... the School of Communication Arts place is off by its self. Triangle Town Center is probably the nearest major landmark I think we will have plenty of time to hang out before it starts.

Here is the official itinerary for tomorrow.

All,

Here is the tentative program schedule for tomorrow:

6:45-7:15
- Refreshments in theatre lobby
- Destineer's demo reel will play while attendees get seated.

7:15-8:00
- Participants will take places on the stage. Rafael will have the podium,
panelists will have seats.
- I'll kick off the presentation, thank our sponsors and let them have a
quick word.
- Rafael will introduce each speaker and facilitate discussion. A
microphone will be passed among panelists.

8:00-8:30
- Q&A session with audience
- Wrap-up

8:30-9:00
- Social and door prizes

Ok so, the Town Center area seems to be pretty huge from what I can tell on Mapquest. It there a specific spot that you think might be best to meet at? Also, what time? I was thinking maybe around 5 or so. That would give us plenty of socializing and traveling time.

I guess the easiest way to meet would be to have a sign. I could make a big obnoxious one that says "CA NC Artists"

So let's do an official head count. Any one else think they can make it?

April 23rd, 2007, 04:56 PM
I had to ask to get off of work early so I can make it down, I'll have to run by my house first and shower, hopefully i can be on the road by 4pm so i should get there around 6:30 I might be a little later (doubt it though) because this will be my first time I traveled down there by myself. Ive already been to SCA 3 times, so I pretty much know where its at. As for meeting at the town center first, I think i know where thats at, im gonna get out maps tonight and plot my course. If I would have thought about us meeting up first I would have just got the day off (my shift starts at 12pm). That way I could be there around 5 or 5:30pm.

One question, I read the thread about this event and it wasnt made clear if we need a IDGA membership card so I went ahead and signed up for one but I havent gotten it yet, do I need one?

Heya,
I'm going to be in Asheboro from May 17th-28th.
Any of you CA'ers around the area?

Grendel Grack
April 23rd, 2007, 07:37 PM
Hey there Mr. Dos Santos! It's great to see that pro artists have an interest in the state. If we have a market for illustration, I haven't found it :) I'm in Boone, which is several hours away from Asheboro.

BuckWeisel: I don't think you need a mambership card. I don't have one either so we can muscle our way in together if needed :)

All: I've had a change of plans and I don't think I'll be able to get to the area until 6:30 or so. I guess I'll just meet you guys at the theater.

Chirp Chirp
April 23rd, 2007, 09:16 PM
Ok, it sounds like I'll see you guys tomorrow around 6:30ish.

DSillustration - I am not too sure what all there is to do in Asheboro other than see the Zoo. However, Raleigh is about 1 - 1.5 hours away and there is a fair amount more up here including quite a few game companies such as: Epic, Red Storm, Vicious Cycle, Destineer, and soon EA just to name the major ones. If you can make it this way I can give you a tour of Destineer Studios and possibly some of the others. In addition, I believe you did some art for Womengamers.com and you could definitely meet the women behind the site since one is my wife and the other is my sister-in-law. Let me know if you can head up this way during your stay at NC and I'll start making arrangements.

The IDGA meeting was very informative, great to hear from people in the game industry.

Chirp Chirp: Sorry I didnt get to say good bye. Thanks for taking time to speak at this meeting and it was great to meet you.

Now we need a sketch party!

The IGDA was enlightening. It was great to hear the info straight from the source.

Buck: We didn't get lost on the way back, thankfully. I enjoyed talking with you and I look forward to seeing you at Heroes!

Thanks, Chirp Chirp for your time! I enjoyed hearing about your experiences and I think I have a better idea about how to pursue my career. Your time and effort with all of the questions was very much appreciated.

Thanks! I am glad you guys enjoyed everything. I don't normally think of my story as being "enjoyable" but I am happy to hear there was some useful information buried in my babble. I wish I had some more time to hang out but by the time the line of people cleared, you guys had left.

Then of course on the way home I regretted not mentioning so many things and I hope the over all image of the industry didn't come across as a daunting and oppressive boyish fantasy because it really isn't even though it desperately needs more women.

Keep in mind every company has a different culture. It is just as important for you to like the company you are applying at as it is for them to like you and your work.

I was a bit disappointed that the links I mentioned were not handed out but the information can also be found here...

Hey guys, sorry for the long response time, I've been moving and traveling the past two weeks, so access to a computer has been difficult. I'm glad to see some new folks, don't be shy, start up a sketchbook and show us what you can do.

MSS1209:I'm partial to watercolor and graphite myself. In fact, most of the work that I do is in graphite. Love it. We all look forward to seeing your work. Be sure to let us know when you have some stuff posted.

kikaider2095: Awww, you just missed animazement in Raleigh. Here is the website (http://www.animazement.com/). It's not the largest convention I've ever been to, but it's fun and there is plenty of stuff to do and see. I don't know of any others in NC, but if you have the time and the money, Anime Weekend Atlanta (http://www.awa-con.com/) is the place to be. If you are interested in other types of conventions, Heroes (http://www.heroesonline.com/con-update.htm) in Charlotte is a comic convention (occuring Fathers' Day weekend). Eventhough it is mostly comics they have a few anime vendors that offer REALLY good prices on a variety of stuff, especially perfect collections.

Hey Buck, I'll be there from Friday (around 11 am) to Sunday at small press table 22 in the artists' alley. Look forward to seeing you there!

s.ketch
June 20th, 2007, 04:29 PM
I had a pretty decent time at HeroesCon. It was a bit overwhelming with all that there was to see. It was great seeing some of the artists and live demos. I didn't go on Friday as planned, I had stayed up all night Thursday working on a painting for my dad on fathers day. When dad got home I told him I didnt go and he said we could go Saturday, so thats when I was down there. We got lost because we had a crappy map. We didn't get there till 4 or 4:30.

I was surprised by the amount of comic books there. I wish I had the patience for looking through it all, but after 45 mins of flipping and trying to get around people I just gave up and skimmed the booths for things that caught my eye.

About half way through our time there, me and dad headed to Indie Island to check out the artists. It wasn't till we left that I realized the opportunity I had to do some networking, kinda wish I had spoken up more.

Grendel Grack: I went through artist ally a few times looking for you. I remember you saying table 22 so I was looking for that, I didn't see it. Then I was just trying to spot you. Once I got home I found the map in that book with spider man on it. Then I seen it was SP22 and where you were at and I kicked myself. So im sorry I didn't stop by to check out your stuff.

Before we left I stopped by one of the booths by the entrance to pick up the 300 book (for a lot less than barnes&nobles i might add). I wanted the Marvel Zombie books too, but I couldn't find them anywhere.

So all in all it was a good first time at a comic book convention. I got to see great local talent and my future competition. I came home and started drawing that night.

Oh yeah, how could I forget, Rosario Dawson!!!! I seen a long line, I came around the corner and there she was. It was cool that she took the time to come out and talk to fans.

Heroes Con was fun. I attend it every year (I live in Charlotte). It's always great to walk around and meet the artists, talk to them about their work and processes.

Grendel, it was great to finally meet you. Once I figured out it was you, everything suddenly hit me and I remembered your work that I had seen on your website. It was nice to see your work in person as opposed to a screen. :) I hope you will make it out next year.

Hey Guys, Heores was great fun and also very lucrative. We did a lot better than last year, so there is a good chance we will go again. My friends and I had a great time at the table and I met several CA members, which was a real treat. Cheeks-74 (Sean Galloway) was there and gave me some very helpful advice and tips on improving my portfolio. Thanks Sean!

Chad: It was a pleasure meeting you. I'm glad I decided to wear my CA t-shirt that day!

Buck: It's too bad you couldn't find us but I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Heores is a great first time convention. Everyone is very friendly and some of the vendors have great discounts (as you discovered). I'm glad you had fun.

Hey, I'm gonna be at Dragon Con with the Atlanta Sketch Group (we have a fan table). I'm also in the art show. You should come hang out and sketch with us if you have a chance.

I'm kind of in limbo between North Carolina and Atlanta at the moment. I visit Charlotte several times a year and I always have a great time. If you are interested in comics you should check out Heroes, it's really fun and there are usually several other CA members there. There is also Hickory Con, Trinoc Con, and Animazement.

Silly me for never looking here in the North Carolina Artists thread...especially after Chirp Chirp (coworker) told me about it..Dur. Anyway, I'm living in Raleigh working at Destineer Studios as an environment artist, and occasionally they let me out of my cage and do some concept art :)

On an activity note, I've been thinking about going to the life drawing sessions on tuesday nights at Artspace. From what I've read there's no instructor, its more of a free for all kinda thing. Oh and its like 8 bucks. If there's any Raleigh CAers out there with a spare 8 bucks and a tuesday evening we should make it a thing. I'm getting married next week and will be on my honeymoon the next, so I probably won't go till the end of Sept. but I'll be sure to post some info/thoughts/sketches when I do go.

Congrats on getting married. I get married next April so I am just starting the fun of planning with my other half.(thank goodness for beer)

I have been getting mail messages about the Artspace life drawing sessions for quite some time now and I have always had it in the back of my mind to go. So when you get back from your honeymoon give me a shout and I will make it a regular thing to go with ya. I have never had anyone to go with to these things like the Dr. Sketchy's thing and such, so I have always pussed out.

I would also be interested in starting a sketch group or something in Raleigh with you if you are interested.

I know for a fact that I will be at Heroes again. Animazement is out this year, but I think I will try to make it to one of the Hickory cons. More news will be posted as it is available!

So SugarCrcl down in Fayetnam huh? You military? I am up in Raleigh. Good to hear from you and I can't wait to see some of your work.

This is the best art place on the web imho. Don't forget to take time to look at all the cool features in your User CP. You can make a signature and other things. Another great feature on this forum is when you find a thread you want to keep track of, you can click on Thread Tools and subsicribe to the thread and define how and when you want to be notified of updates. I do that for this forum so when my NC CA.org pplz speak up I can listen in. :P

So do you do digital art yet SugaCrcl? You have a Wacom etc? There are more resources on this site than you can imagine, I can get lost in the posts sometimes. Have fun swimming in the CA.org knowledge. Some of the best artist in the world contribute here.

The Artspace figure studies are every Tuesday night from 7:30 - 10pm. Well I am in my hotel room and have had a blast at the Heroes Con with one more day to go. I had the pleasure of meeting two of our NC ca.org members in person and purchased prints from them to support the cause. bfowler and Grendel thank you very much!

I have to say however, the best time I have had so far was talking with the guys from SidebarNation.com and Bobby Chiu having cold beers at the Westin hotel bar. We talked about art, future projects, politics, and everything else under the sun for several hours. Like many people, I am a huge fan of Bobby's work and his podcasts. Dwight and Swain from SidebarNation.com are also really cool, and do great interviews including ones with Marko and Manley so you check them out if you haven't before.

I also got a chance to talk with Brian Stelfreeze at the hotel, he was a really cool guy, another educator that is really open. Some of his water colors are to die for.

Anyways, I am so wound up I decided to check email and wanted to share the love with the other NC peeps. :D

As far as what is up with me. I just started Bobby Chiu's digital painting class last week and I am having a blast and learning a lot. I have been drawing every day trying to improve on anatomy and such. I have been drinkinig a lot of beers with friends and anxious for football to get into full swing. I get married in October. :D

I'm lazy, thats what's up. If its any consolation, the 18th I start GTCC Jamestown for two semesters of general education classes. Then next fall I plan on transferring to UNCG for a BFA in Painting of which I might switch to Sculpture because I plan on being a 3D modeler (but i want to be able to paint kick ass too) I still do some art here and there, I don't draw much anymore. A few weeks ago I got into some color theory on my own and did a few things with it. I don't know, right now i'm trying to fix some other things in my life before I put all my focus back into art. </serious talk>

Anyway, congrats on the marriage. There are few things better in life than being with a person you truly love.

I don't know if you know this, but the museum is currently going through a overhaul adding a new education center where the permanent display of the Rodin will be. This, last I checked, has closed a couple of the exhibits.

I live in Raleigh and I am very interested in going. Oct. 11th and 18th are both Saturdays and I am pretty sure I could join in on the fun. Maybe I could learn some things too.

My work is like a block from the art museum, in one of the Westchase buildings, right where you turn to get to the RBC center from Blue Ridge. If you ever go during the week, lemme know and I could probably duck out during my lunch break and cruise around there with ya. Just found the NC group ... newby old fart here. I'm so old I fart dust, in fact. :perv:

Anyone know of a life drawing group near Winston-Salem or Greensboro? I used to draw with some pros at a local illustrator/portraitists studio, but they've disbanded, last I heard. I miss it. And my figurative work desperately NEEDS it. My lovely wife won't disrobe for me ... portraits only.

Unfortunately, the UNC department ain't got much happening. And I mean that in a couple different ways. :D I've met a few guys and girls over the years from UNC-G who were killer artists, but they were the exception.

About Raleigh ... it is the closest thing I have to a 'hometown' ... lived there for a couple years before going ito the Army. Then returned for college and career afterward for twelve more years. I miss it. I've been in the triad area for almost ten years now and I like it. But I will always be a 'Raleighite' in my heart. :)

Nice to see other NC folks here. I know a few NC artists and illustrators who've built careers in fine arts and/or illustration. David Gaadt has illustrated probably hundreds of books and promo posters and does awesome portrait work, and Kyle Webster from UNC-G (the most awesome artist I've seen from UNC-G) is making a great living with illustration and has a new graphic novel. Check it out ... http://www.lightchildren.com/

I used to draw with kyle at David's studio from time-to-time. You'd think drawing with people like David, kyle, and Mark Spangenburg for a few months each year I'd be much better with figures than I am. :D That's what I get for laying off for over two years. :(

Good luck with the figure drawing classes. The only schools I know of that offer it near me are UNCC and Art Institute of Charlotte.

I have just completed my first semester of community college. Completed the drawing course their but we really don't have enough time to really get into drawing. My teacher has stated that the class she teaches at Gaston is a very light class compared to what she would teach elsewhere.

Been working 2 jobs so I've not had much time to draw outside of school.

Phlipper - You're not the only one who desperately misses his figure drawing. While my wife will disrobe she won't hold still for very long.

I've been thinking of starting up a figure drawing group around the concord, east Charlotte area. Anybody on here interested. I talked with a local gallery some time ago who was open to having it for a small fee and there is always the locl libraries but that would probably have to be clothed models. I don't know, I hadn't checked into that.

Hello. I'm from North Carolina too as you can see. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about art so I can contribute to the community and simply enjoy life to a higher extent. ;) Nice to meet you all.

My favorite medium would be oil paints. I love doing landscapes. Figure drawing in pastels is something I enjoy as well, although I do need a lot more experience with it. I can't quite put correct anatomy down on paper yet (besides faces) without a reference. I'm attempting to attend UNC-CH as a freshman next year.

Greensboro is a pretty central location. I would drive to Greensboro from Raleigh one Saturday a month to get together to art it up with you guys. We could do some theme, figure, life drawing, or single topic sketching etc. Would be worth the drive to meet some people interested in the same thing etc. for like a 4 hour get together. Something along the lines of 1pm-5pm. Be home by dinner etc.

I am not familiar with Greensboro or where it would be cool to get together. But I am just throwing this idea out there.

Thats a cool idea Wheezy. UNCG has a new art studio or gallery and there are some other artistically endowed places to meet at. I think hanging around downtown could be fun, some nice bars and pubs there. Sadly I am not in touch with the art crowds of Greensboro so I have no other ideas beyond that.

The lady at the gallery said she'd only charge 5 bucks a head to use the space but I'd have to take care of the model, finding and paying. I may put up some flyers, try to generate some interest. The last thing I want to do is get stuck paying the model out of pocket every week.

I've even thought about just getting a clothed model and do something at the local library. Do the nude model thing after I build up some interest and models. Plus, it's pretty easy to find somebody to just sit around with their clothes on.

SigonWulf
January 24th, 2009, 07:47 PM
That seems like a real good idea. Nice way to start things off and if it gets going we can then seek a proper studio and a nude model or whatever. Also car pooling to art museums, art galleries, etc.. would be nice.
