Hi Everyone! I'm working on a new art book called "Creature Sketches" and I wanted to show some of the stuff from the book here.

This thread will be dedicated to the making of the Creature Sketches book and will have plenty of WIPs and sketches which I will be updating constantly so stay tuned!

To see more info on any of my art books CLICK HERE (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/books.html)

Here's the first wip that I'll be showing... it's about a mysterious black swordsman battling monsters. It started out for a quick sketch but I liked it so much, I decided to explore the idea further.

Hey

looks good man - real good. makin me think a little of Dan Milligan!

Carefull with that cut across the beast's body. It looks a little too straight - use it explain the form the creature's torso. Also try and simulate more movement.

Good work, post more!

I love the background textures in the last update.... is that actually digital or did you scan that in?? I can't seem to recreate gesso and scumbling digitally. The subject itself is looking creepy and cool. Nice sense of movement as well. Can't wait to see more!

Love the mood, love the colours! And great job on the movement! Man - it's not that big a change from the last update, but the subtle changes you have added are genius. It really exceeded my expectations, man.

Good job. Post more, and post other ones too!

Cool, surprised I missed this thread Bobby!
Great to see some previews, gonna have to buy this book as well! Love the Ferret, the pencil marks between the foreground and background really work well together!
The first creature one looks badass, too! The head of the creature reminds me of this weird installation artwork i saw recently at the harthouse at UofT :)

that baterpillar ferret is supa-cute. Very imaginative! My only crit is that it maybe needs some shape - look slightly flat.

Damn love what you did with the background there. Is that a custom brush or did you scan in some textures? Feels like watercolour!
I think some of the grass in the foreground gets a bit busy/heavy, maybe incorporate some cast shadows/fade/depth of field to balance it out more?

demented
April 15th, 2006, 11:58 AM
Wow, digi - that ferret is shaping up brilliantly! Loving the background texture. That thing is supercute - I want one!

bhanu - Thanks Bhanu! I'm really excited about this book! As Demented said WIP = work in progress

SirGreenSock - Thanks Nik! The crits are appreciated! I was thinking the same thing. You'll see the changes in the update. The texture in the back is mixed media. Most of it is india ink on watercolor with filters in Photoshop

demented - thx D! I'll keep you posted :D

ashrumm - yep i'm on cgtalk alot but actually been lurking around conceptart for even longer but I keep it on the DL. mostly lurking but I'll be posting here more.

Like where you're going with the fuzz/fur, and love the way you've rendered the ears!
I think I liked the slightly larger eyes like on the sketch better, has a bit more of a puppy-dog look to it!
Keep busting out these updates Bobby, great to see the progress!

Here's the next creature I'll be working on so stay tuned! I was thinking of a creature kind of like a Naked Mole Rat/Kangaroo with a sprinkle of a Bunny. This is what I came up with. I think it's gross and funny at the same time and I love it. Hopefully the final piece will be as good as the initial idea.

aagr! cute cute and damn good work! my god, that book looks very promesing.. totaly love how you did the watercolor-ish background and make the furry caterpillar (and normally I m frigging scared of those glibery yuks, but since this one is furry and so cute..) looks so realistic, wont mind to have him crowling over my grass.. if I had a garden..
I m looking forward for the result of the Naked Mole Rat.. bla..

Hi Bobby! I love your cute furry...animals!
One thing I'd like to know: In the piece for the cover of your book there suddenly pops up the watercolor background. Am I right to assume you did this piece analogue and then scanned it? Or is it Painter?

I also love this page: http://www.artofbob.com/images/books/creatures/sketch02.jpg
For the one in the center to the right and the one below it, did you use a normal brush (without texture) and assigned pen pressure to brush size? Love the looseness in these!

Sorry for the question bomb and keep it on! Something less cute like the very first one posted would also be cool for a change
