the tool does not make the art, the artist does. doesn't matter what tool you use, just do your best to learn how to use it well.
I got caught up in the Maya vs Max vs Softimage thing for about 6-7 years, and after working for 3 companies, I realize that I just need to use one and use it well since I don't have time to learn them all.

I agree... in the long run it doesn't matter which program you choose, it's how you use the tools creativly.Max, Maya and XSI are all similar. However, I will say that I find I am faster in Maya and feel as if it is perhaps geared towards the artist over someone who takes a technical approach.....this is me though.

well i find lightwave very hard to use, and truespace i did use for a bit, but the buttons are confusing.

try as many as possible.
Fortunately most software has a free version such as Maya PLE.
Like what the others have said, its the artist and not the program. The trick is to find the app that you find easy to use which might not necessarily be the one that costs the most and has the better dynamics features ;P

i agree with afro, but i also think that maya is the way to go, if i had a choice id rather have started on maya, very powerful tool though no more powerful then max unless you have the unlimited version. though i love max, and have been using it for several years now. ive found that i can do the same things with max, but it jsut doesnt seem to be as powerful.

I've been using 3dsmax for about 5 years now. Don't see anything wrong with it. It has tons of plugins and of course the Brazil renderer :)
