-------------------------
DEADLINE
SUNDAY, APRIL 9
--------------------------
Here we are the 20th edition of our Character Creation Workshop. :yayca:
As promised i had a look on the suggestions thread and selected the first that sounded... mind tickling.
The kudos goes to nephilim. He summoned the...
Clockwork Collosus
a massive, intricate, and powerful automaton. Built by a race of long dead astronauts and left on a desolate moon.
keywords- enigmatic, intricate, massive.
[EDIT] - Oregano is right. Please try not to make just an object. Give him a mood, feelings, attitude - make a character out of this ideea.
Feel free to post your little story about this guy. Thx.

nice suggestion. have something like the statues from easter island in mind. i might participate if i dont have to color it. hehe
ok here it goes. a wip. not finished yet. wasnt i supposed to show the wip at all? need some things done onto the lower torso thats buried in the sand. and maybe add something that ensures that its a collossus.

Dammit, I work all week thinking I got the whole weekend for myself,
Then my brother comes to visit and brings the Flu with him.
Now it's Friday afternoon and I have what feels like some sort of plague.
looks like I'm gonna have to make a last minute rush on this on sunday.
cough!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/onionface/bohemoth3.jpg
don't know if I'll get to work anymore on this before deadline.
colors are a bit all over.
Caption would read:let sleeping dogs lie.

Interesting concept.
My only caveat is that the clockwork collosus as described is not a character, but a thing. If we ad some sort of peronsality that individualizes it, then it becomes a character.
Just my 2 cents worth.
~Oreg.
-------------------------{EDIT}------------------------------------
Well, decided to take a slightly different turn on the "Clockwork" aspect. Today (the fifth) is the fifth, ah... aniversary of my dad's death. So, I was thinking about him some when I did this. Anytime you see one of those classic style rockets in one of my pieces, it's a little tribute to him. He actually built a Jules Vern style rocket ship in HO scale out of a Legg's Egg way back when. If I can ever find the thing in my mom's garage, I'll post a photo of it. It's awesome.

Hey Shane!....nice to see you posting bro. Hope all's going better for ya man. But yeah in essence I agree with you...if there is a name or function or name and function behind the clockwork collosus then he/she/it becomes a definitive character. I mean everyone who enters could be asked to provide those details in a single paragraph. There's my rusty pennies.
Edit: Onionface: Just throwing this out there..don't get hung up on the literal bro. The brief is stating that this colossus was left by ancient astronauts on a desolate moon, so I doubt they would use conventional springs and cogs akin to human machinery. I think it let's you explore a greater set of dynamics.

Daisy wanders the moon, stricken with guilt and failure, that is, if a clockwork collosus can have such emotion.
She was a hard working giant, given 'Southern charm'. She single handedly created the colony for the makers until one day the makers started to stop functioning. She could build and build, but she couldn't stop the disease. All that remains on the lonely moon is a ghost colony and thousands of caskets for those that were buried, their red lights shining toward the heavens and into Daisy's lonely LED eyes.

I'm in. Still at the rough stage, but i think it's launched off in th right direction.
I think blaise's got the concept down the most accurate at the moment, looks very promising if i may say.
Helzon, wonderful design but it's more a vehicle of some kind, and i'm not getting a good idea of the size yet. OK, since i'm at it:
redehlert: Some nice effects (i like the little lines within the silhoutte), otherwise it's too early to tell. Could be fun to see what you come up with freewheeling like this.
onionface: Cool. It's massive, little infernal, could become a neat pic. But i'm getting more a giant coal mining device than a lonely iron giant. You know from the Final Fantasy games, that summon monster Alexander. Your pic sorta reminds me of him. Could be a direction worth investigating?
Mort: The lack of a clear perspective is really hurting the pic here. The idea is there, now put some composition into it.
EDIT: nearly finished. Perhaps i'll noodle it around some more.
OK, i'm gonna shut up now, hope you can stand all this unsollicited advice.

The Atlas Administrator ran the entire operation of moon 407 until they replaced him with a new operating system. His gigantic clockwork body was jettisoned on the nearby waste disposal planet. sadly they no longer use the alloys that make his massive frame and so, beaten and torn he lies there waiting to rust away. With any luck the primative native life forms will proclaim him a God, or a least, take up residence in his hollow shell.

Abandoned by its makers, the Colossus has begun to change its surroundings. No one fully knows the motive behind its actions, but some have speculated. Some believe that the Colossus creates these monoliths to mimic its own figure, in a way creating friends. Others believe that the monoliths represent the tall buildings of the ancient civilization. Still, others believe that they are a form of communication, a call for help, to anyone who can see them. We may never know the true meaning of these formations.

Red - Looks sweet, dude. Like an old school movie with scratched up film.
Goran - WOW! Favourite piece I've seen from you... Tryin to figure out how you rendered it so well. It looks very precise, like the work of a 3d program, but some parts show that it's painted. Great earth textures, too.
Blaise - nice angle to get the whole 'collosus' effect goin.

When he was first built, the people did cheer.
They marvelled his sight, their hearts were sincere.
For it’s existence marked a new frontier.
But to the colossus, it’s purpose was unclear.
He stood very still for more than a year.
He felt so alone, no stories to hear.
One day, he took a stroll and crushed all who held him dear.
Tick and Tack did the windings of his gear.
Now he was all alone, alone on this ruined sphere.
And all he ever wanted, was a listening ear.

Nice predator kinda feel, possessed. However, one crit: the landscape makes it look animal sized. It may help if you remove the background tree trunks (not actually sure what they are) and reshape the landforms.

More eye candy.
Charcoal, I'm lovin where your sketch is headed. Reminds me of Ghost in the Shell (especially around the mouth), how the parts kind of pop apart but otherwise fit smoothly together.
Bumskee - sweet.
Brandish - great perspective, and nice mechanics. However, one thing I notice is that its left arm looks slightly out of place. It looks like the shoulder is a bit too far forward, and consequently so is the rest of the arm. Shouldn't be hard to nudge it into place though.

Hi all I thought I’d have a go at a Chow so here its is

Description
On a small moon the clockwork colossus stands waiting for the return of his creators, he has toiled and finished preparing the rock for colonization. The completion signal has been sent, he now only has to wait for their reply. He looks forward to their arrival as he will be dismantled and will become the hart of a glorious new city but for now he merely waits looking to the sky for the signal and creators that will never come…

Didnt get time to take this guy to colour... towards the end it felt like i liked the idea but the visual approach had become stagnant... every element felt stuck on and not really a part of him... id like to have another go at this character using a different approach, and im thinking about developing his narrative further.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a67/thebohemian/Chowdetail.jpg
The poor clockwork colossus wandered the moon for many more years, carving twisting paths in the ashen surface. His search would yield no results, his labour would bear no insight into his plight. His singular purpose was to find a companion, someone to tell him the time. For if he knew the time, he would know when his creators would return, and he could be content.
But the true irony of his plight lay not in his blind obediance, nor in his inability to see that which was so close. The true irony was that his makers did not, and never had planned to return. They cared not for the clockwork colossus, or his endless and pointless journey for false hope.
As the rust of ages consumed him and his gears eventually wore to dust, the colossus' one regret was that he never stopped worrying about the time for long enough to sit, and admire the endless beauty of life that spread out around him.
