I like the style, and I like all the white space with an image like this. Something seems like it might be off with the lips, but I'm not sure. Nice work.
I'm guessing you did this traditional cause you said simple inks and paint? Looks alot like illustrator work to me though, maybe I misunderstood?

Very nice style, but I think there is too much ambient light from the lighsaber on this girl.

i think this is a nicely executed painting and stuff. i would recommend you try something a bit more original. i realize you may be a big star wars fan and stuff...but that has been beaten to a pulp. move on. try something new.

wow, I sure am drawing a lot of flack about that lightsabre..( on some other forums too) ...
really it was just an afterthought to add a laser sword, and it kinda turned into something like a jedi weapon.
anyway...the whole drawing was something I threw together rather quickly to test my new scanner and some color methods in photoslop.
MonkeyAssSlapper: very good.. looks like u used that cutout thing on photoshop..is that true? nice work
not sure exactly what youre referring to, i assume you mean a filter of somesort....no filters were used. I simply penciled and inked it traditionally and scanned and colored in photoshop. thanks....
keyth: i think this is a nicely executed painting and stuff. i would recommend you try something a bit more original. i realize you may be a big star wars fan and stuff...but that has been beaten to a pulp. move on. try something new.
I mean no offense but I have run into this belief before...in art school from both teachers and students regurgitating what teachers tell them....you would think that of all places artschools would be able to see past subject matter. I went to artschool, got my degrees....hell I even went to a special highschool for artists where I earned college credit. and all through school i was told that this form of illustration is not art, or its been done.
Well so what...I like it, it inspires me, and its fun to do...Its certainly not representative of my entire portfolio or my diversity of styles, and is in fact the only star wars fan piece I have ever done.
what if I had drawn a whip instead of a lightsabre, would you say that THAT has been done to death as well....?
hmmm........
and lets see...what I have Recieved in return for all my close mindedness.....well I am a professional concept artist in the games and movie industry, and I'm designing original characters for 2k4's version of one of the hottest games around...

Yeah I totaly agree with Keyth. Hes not basheing your style, hes just saying people have been doing starwars art since the 70s. If your take such offense to comments, dont ask for them...

not offended by the comment....as I stated in the previous post.....just dissappointed that people cant get past subject matter. I've run into this before, not just in this piece but in others as well and reading critiques of others art...people get really hung on subject matter...
does it really matter ?

May 4th, 2003, 07:36 PM
Subject matter is always a factor. What if I had the talent of the great masters and I painted pictures of KKK members hanging black people, do you think people would say Im a great painter? Probabley not, my point is, especially at a CONCEPT site that the subject reflects ideas and concepts about the piece of work. In this case you are showing us the concept of something thats been done a million times, your talent level has nothing to do with it. We are critiquing your creative prosess, nothing more.

I appreciate your thoughts and comments....I'm not mad or anything, and nardfrog I see your point.....I really do, but I think I havent made mine clear...
a chick holding a lightsabre is hardly the same thing as kkk lynchings.
my point is just that it was a VERY quick sketch to test my new scanner and somecolor methods in photoshop..thats it...
thanks for taking the time...dont mean to sound rude or anything.
but the whole "subject matter" topoic goes back years with me...I could argue on for hours...so I'll just bow out for now before I make any enemies....
no more jedi...I promise..:)

Okay, the KKK thing was an extreme just to help clearify the point. By none means do I think your stuff is evil like that.

May 5th, 2003, 04:58 AM
sigh.
I think the subject is not beyond pin-up. The chick has no character, only big tits and a sabre. Nothing makes me think she's a jedi, she looks more like : 'Hey Luke, why do you keep your toys lying around - mind if i use 'em? oops!'
I think that's what Keyth and others are trying to tell you. There is no background, no character and no story. But otherwise it's neatly done. The execution part is good.
I don't mean offense, and i'm not pretending to be better or anything but if you claim you design original game characters i'd sure like to see some of those and not pin-up art.

personally i find the comment completely uncalled for ceenda,
i don't think the artist was trying for BREATH TAKING ORIGINALITY, but more just out of the spirit of drawing something for fun. as the artist said he was quick and simple.

I'm not sure if you're looking for general critiques and suggestions or just comments, but I'll reply anyways.
First, the white background is pretty distracting in it's brightness. Any kind of darker colors back there would help to make the image much more pleasing to the eye, and thus, easier to define.
Some of the facial features are slightly skewed and look somewhat odd.
The linework is interesting, and very clean, however, the pose looks somewhat awkward/strange, especially the position of the lightsaber.
Although the style looks to be somewhat stylized/cartoony, some of the proportions don't work very well, such as the fingers on the gloved hand, and the size of the feet.
Speaking of which, the way the feet are cut off is pretty distracting, and could be easily fixed.
There's just a few thoughts/suggestions for improvement. If this is just a quick doodle/test, then I recommend not posting in the "Finished Works" section, and perhaps the "Sketches" section instead. Hope to see more art from you soon.

i agree with brasshorsekiller on the part about the face looking odd, i just think it's teh way one side of the lip curves up and the other goes down.
anyways i forgot to say i like this piece.

I'm sorry if my comment came out too strong -- i like the picture (except the breasts ;-) ) my comment was just in reaction to the ones above it maybe impulsive and maybe it read wrong too. But it stands. Let's see the good stuff!
I could not draw this picture and it's nice to look at so that is the value it has for me.

HEY DAVI, you actually get it...youre the only one it seems...thanks man....;)
I updated the above pic with a color background. I had a few comments about the white and was curious myself what it would do.....technique wise that is.

Hnn......I like this piece, I'm not a SW fan but I still like it. It doesn't really look StarWarsish, it's pretty original in my opinion. People, lazer sword concepts were around LONG before Star Wars was. I like the coloring, the face does look a bit odd, but art is allowed to have errors, that's really what makes everything unique.
Originality is not really in question here. Ok, if no one has figured it out yet, I mostly draw porn. So when I'm drawing different 'positions' *coughcoughs* The chances are, it's been drawn before. You have to take something that might have been done before, but make it done by -YOU- make it special. This artist has done a damn good job in doing that. The picture's overall aura wouldn't change no matter what she had in her hand. If the character had a GUN in her hand it would still look cool. I wouldn't submit this in a portfolio to Ringling, but hehe ^^' I wouldn't submit a lot of things I draw for fun. It's a great piece. ^^ love it.

Thanks man I appreciate you taking the time, no flash here, it was hand pencilled and inked and scanned and colored. yeah I dont deny any influences, and Hawk is a good friend of mine...so I take that as a compliment, I only hope to be half as good as him...but by the same token I'm trying to expand into new styles and my own look....

concept art is cool if not frustrating when you have to crank out 20 iterations of the same character in a day or so. but it is a great job, if you like to draw characters. I actually started out as a jim lee wanna be(comic artist) about 12 years ago. Only recently did I try to get concept work. Currently I am freelancing with a couple different companies, including epic.

i dont want to start an arguement, or be rude, but i really hate it when people take offense to crits and have to throw a comment back like "oh yeah, well im a professional in the game industry." when we look at a piece of art and crit it, we do not care if you are some hot shot professional. that is not even part of the thought process. we are simply trying to give suggestions no matter how good or bad you think they are. not only that, but if you are a professional then you should be able to respond like a professional when you receive crits. because honestly, by making a come back of how you went to some special art highschool and are a pro in the hottest game industry around, it just makes you look like a pompous jerk who can not take crits with a grain of salt.

daarken, we dont need to drag this up again...I feel extremely lucky to be doing what I'm doing and I by no means think that I am better than anyone else......if you read the post i didnt say what I said in response to any art crit..I said what I said in response to:
i think this is a nicely executed painting and stuff. i would recommend you try something a bit more original. i realize you may be a big star wars fan and stuff...but that has been beaten to a pulp. move on. try something new.
He doesnt know me or anything about me or my art experience and made a judgement about me based on 1 piece of art that I posted. From the sound of it I was called close minded because I drew a chick with a lightsabre....I respondd in kind to the insult.....am I not allowed to defend myself?
had it been an art crit...then you might have a point....thats all I have to say about this subject and i bare no ill will against anyone....

i have been watching this thread and will respond only to two things: 1) lynching=bad. and 2) titan, your recent post has the word insult related to my first response. twas just a comment. nothing else. i'm sorry if you feel insulted. but that didn't come from me. and like i said, i think it's a nicely executed drawing. keep it up.

Lame............. wheres the love........ come on........
That said, I would agree about the way you handled the comments....... it shouldnt matter what the subject is, if he states that the star wars/ jedi subject is beaten to a pulp, thats his opinion. It shouldnt matter if you are in kindergarten or friggin Doug Chiang himself, these are opinions based upon the art, not the person. What we see here, in this thread, is what we are presented by you. So his comments, and the crits of others would reflect this one piece, not you or your art as whole. That said, even if its quick and for fun, half-naked jedi girls are a little cliche, if not overdone, but that doesnt mean you cant do them. They are fun to do, no doubt. I think all he meant was dont make it a habit, where your art becomes star wars fan art and thats it. Anyways, nice post, look at what brasshorse said, and that will make it all the better. keep it up, and draw whatever you want, whenever you want. :)

*shrugs and sits there mostly ignored but watches anyways*
I think that if he had drawn a whip in her hand and not a light saber then most everyone would freak out and say "Indiana Jones! Nuuuuu!" and start running around like crazy. Or They'd just say "heh, dominatrix girl, nice but overdone" there are too many things in the art world that are 'overdone' but they are so fun to do! It's really stupid. This artist took something that is 'overdone' *glares at certian people* and made it look REALLY damn good. The artist wasn't arrogant about it, but ya know, I get irritated to when I draw a furre and people dismiss it as overdonek, so he has a right to irritation. He said this drawing was for fun, it isn't like he put it in his portfolio ya know! It's a really good drawing, nice clean lines and good coloring. Stop kicking a dead horse while it's down. He didn't do anything wrong, unless making a really saucy pinup is a crime?
*sighs and just watches some more*
That's my ten cents.....
ps. sorry for the partial flame but I've been stuck in a situation like this, I think it should really stop.

Wow, this is a funny thread. It amazes me how a Jedi girl with a nice rack can spawned such venomous debate.
Is it a cliché? Sure...just as much as elves, vampires and apocalyptic nomads are...and, God, only knows how many threads have endured these subjects.
Most of us work within certain genres and a few are talented enough to exercise extreme creativity and even originality within their inherit limitations. Is this post one of them? Um, maybe not, but even the artist claimed his intentions were light and fun. Who could knock that? I personally like it for what it is: a cartoony Jedi chick. If the artist is serious about developing this piece, then I could suggest many things: background, personality, color, composition, etc. However, asking him to change subject matter is outside the realm of critique. I can't imagine traveling back in time and telling Degas that if he painted circus elephants instead of ballerinas that, then, I would only like his work. In essence, I would like his work regardless of the subject matter.
Concerning another post about the merits of a great painter and the KKK. Personally, I don't think the KKK as an organization has the acumen to determine what's good or bad art. With that said, a great painter remains great regardless of his affiliation. For instance, I'm not a Neo-Stalinist, nor am I a communist, but I do enjoy the "socialist art" of that era. Because Stalin killed millions of people does that mean I should discard the talent of many artists who promoted his regime and ideology? Many centuries ago, the Catholic Church wasn't exactly a tolerant organization either, yet Michelangelo worked for the Pope. Should I discard him as a great artist as well?
Well, that's my 2cents worth,
Dan
