Greetings,
I'm the Producer and Lead Programmer for "Savage2: The Barbarian Chronicles", an official modification for an upcoming game (http://savage2.s2games.com) - we expect our modification to sell for between $9.99 and $14.99 on S2's website when it is released. We already have full access to the required codebase, and expect to be in a sellable state just a couple of months after the original game's release, providing for interesting profit potential, but also a tight schedule that we can't afford to screw up on too much.
We began design consolidification and programming just a short while ago, and we are currently ramping up artist recruitment. I've already talked to a couple of interested 3D artists/modellers/etc., although far from enough (so we're still highly interested in those), but we are in severe lack of concept artists, and obviously that's why I'm posting here today, and am looking for feedback from you guys! :)
Basically, we're looking for dedicated, talented concept artists, initially for environment work but also for characters. The first thing we need to do is to create high-quality sketches showing the atmosphere of the modification a bit, with barbarian villages etc. - I'll give more details on what I'm thinking of to those interested in contributing. We also need building, character and weapon sketches, of course!
Considering the amount of required work here, it's obvious that more than one concept artist will likely be involved. I don't have any problem having more of them with less time on their hands, just that considering the profit-sharing scheme, I'd rather have one or two highly dedicated ones, obviously - but if someone's relatively dedicated & talented, we'd love to see what he can do to help us no matter what! ;)
It is important to realize that since there is no guarantee of how much money we make on this, it's fully proportional to mod sales, this should NOT be considered a reliable form of revenue. So fundamentally, consider this as a generous work compensation system, with no real guarantee - we wouldn't be proposing it if we weren't confident about it, though.
Finally, it might be worth explaining who's [currently] working on this. Some of us are uni/college students, from both the USA and Europe. Personally, I'm also working on the official Savage2 OpenGL/Linux port for S2Games, as is another programmer on the team. Ken Morse is also on the team as artist; he has been the Lead Artist for City of Villains by Cryptic Studios, and is currently Art Director for the City of [...] games there.
In summary, I feel this is an amazing opportunity for anyone interested. You'll (most likely) get compensated for your work if you're active, and if you want to get into the videogame industry or a cousin one, this can be a huge boost to achieve that goal. Heck, unlike many other modifications, you could even classify it as an official paid job on a resume, which can be an immensely valuable addition. I think everyone will be quite excited by the gameplay mechanisms, too.
Looking forward to your feedback, questions, and interest,
Uttar
