This place is so incredibly inspirational, everyone's so talented, that I wanted to make a sketchthread of my own. I am not an art major or specializing in anything art related (electrical engineering, just like falc-) so I don't get to do these awesome drawing classes like so many others, I turn to the mirror instead :D Below are some old and recent stuff, the semi-crazy headphone selfportraits are the latest one, C&C really appreciated! I'll try to update whenever I don't have to program or cram for tests~!

For someone who doesnt take art classes, these are pretty good. I like the mech ones, for your figure work, if you get the chance get some anatomy books. Try to think of basic forms, the painted self portrait looks nice, but somethings get alittle wierd like the nose, but you seem to have the right idea.

Thanks for the crit! By basic form do you mean proportions or more like alignment? I have Drawing the Human Body and hogarth's dynamic body or something like that that I try look over from time to time, plus some andrew loomis' books. But they are all already so refined that they are like pictures already. But I'll keep in mind what you said and focus more on the basics. (think more generally right?)

for a friend, ~25min. the slight texturing is the result of a partial cover up of the previous (failed) attempt

inspired by annisahmad, car pics! It's hard to make it look illustrative, this was just a try at reducing stroke count.

tried to pay more attention to the basic form. But I think you were talking more about doing more thumbnail type stuff right?

these two were from the Closet Artists club I founded at UT Austin. This time we watched (a lot) of Project Runway to help us get inspired to do more clothing design

You have something going on Omi-kun, something good. Some of the sketches look a little rushed, but the others look like you took your time, and they came together well, both in concept and in how precisely you picked out your lines. Might I suggest you avoid using a soft edged brush, or airbrush in your images, it is necessary, and make the painting look mushy. Keep up the good work.

I was just beginning to think I was abusing the softedge when I saw your post! But they're not all bad right? How else do you make something smooth looking if not blur it?

Well - most of your images don't seem to have any airbrushing, and they are sweet looking. The strokes of color that you are using, like in that self portrait communicate lighting, hue, planar changes etc just fine. Personally, I think seeing the strokes and letting the viewer's eye do the mixing and blending keeps the image lively.

Mechas ,
Can I ask a question?
ARe you japanese.Cuz I think you are looking at those mechas. I am not japanese but I am crazy about them too,Though I dont draw them much. The last post where you mix photos with paintings look good. Can you post a bit more sketches of mecha and some explanation about their structure and all that.
Omi-kun
April 9th, 2006, 07:47 PM
bhanu: Nope, I'm not Japanese, but I read Shogun and fell in love w/ the name Omi, and gundams, evas, shiro's mechs, steel battalion, motar heads, etc. I don't read much manga nowadays but that might change. Thanks for your interest in my mechs, I have some more at DA (http://omi-kun.deviantart.com/) if you care to look there. As for the mechs, I'll explain them when I flesh them out :)
some partial self ref, still gota learn more about anatomy, it's fsking hard from pictures or looking at my self in only one angle.
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch025.jpg
Hogarth studies, I do these every so often, I'm not sure if they help or not, cause I can't seem to remember any of these details I draw over and over again
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch026.jpg
A friend lend me SoulFire, some comic by aspen and I fell in love w/ the poses, they're so cool :) I wonder how do I find more poses like those? Anyone know?
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch027.jpg
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch028.jpg
and this is the new mecha (at the bottom right corner) is something that made me shriek with joy. I'm still fleshing it out, so I don't want to show it fully right now. But it follows under the jumping philosophy, a mech should be able to jump out of danger and be pretty damn agile, thus making them superior to tanks (other wise they are just tanks with a bigger profile). It's based on a different kind of leg design, something I hope haven't been used yet.

for my eventual story, the mech at the top left is a work in progress, really don' tknow how to fully arrange the legs... and the guy's suit needs to be the next generation g-suit, I just dunno how to make it look like that
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch034.jpg
random futuristic fashion that looks really horrible
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch035.jpg
and this is the mech I'm working on... the legs are the little tips at the bottom, they're meant to be dellicate and... some how transfer enough impulse to propel the mech hundreds of feet....

wow, really cool stuff!i like your pencil rendering damn much cleaner then mine :D, the anatomy even if you don't have formal art training loos really great, dig the self studies and the hogart work (it will help, I gotta find those damn books too). Most of the photoshop stuff looks too rush to actually judge, but you've got a good understanding of color and light...i'd like to see a finished work ;)
keep it up!;)

How do I suck at shading and everybdy else is god at it.
The guy and the girl in the you last pose have big head on their body. The girls' ass has some problems.Your last pic about futuristic fashion doesnt state much about the future. You studies are looking good.Sooner or later you will be able to put details by yourself ,dont worry ,just keep on practicing.

April 16th, 2006, 09:58 PM
Wow 3 replies, that's so much more than I could have hoped for.
Thanks guys for dropping by!
TheGnoll: I don't think I've made a finished piece in 3 years >_< I don't think I am capable of such lofty goals anymore, but I will try... with the soldier dude below
bhanu: Hmm, you might be right about the ass, but I'm not so sure about the heads, the girl maybe.... but the guy is pretty average for my ref pics. And yeah my fashion design is pretty blah, I was just thinking about how skirts and shorts will be even shorter in the future... I really can't draw anymore trends beyond that. Maybe even more layering?
Here's more mechs and military stuff:
I'm slowly figuring out what the leg should look like, after that I'll refine the top, but right now I'm thinking of a helicopter-esque turret mounted shortbarrel gattling gun, weapons bay in the back that can fold out like in the bottom left front view, and smoke grenades mounted at the side. The legs look pretty ugly right now though...
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch036.jpg
it just kinda came out of nowhere, and then I drooled over FF: Spirits within for a long time, still figuring out the thigh and stomach area..

Hey man, wanted to come by and drop a prop bomb. I'm digging the variety of shits you're pushing, especially the mechs. I'm always slightly envious of people that can handle them well, as I can't at all. But combining robots and cute girls is a great idea. The first digi. SP [or atleast I'm guessing SP] was well done. Your line weight with pencil is already there too, just continue those studies and it'll all tie in together nicely. And one last thing, this is all really impressive for an E.E. major. I have a friend who's doing the same thing, and he's a bad ass drummer. It's like E.E.'s have a double talent thing going. So keep it up man!
Omi-kun
April 18th, 2006, 12:39 AM
Thanks Zord! I don't know what line weight you're talking about, I think I stumble onto them every once in a while. Thanks for the encouragement. Girls and mechs aren't original (like Shiro Masamune is, who is a great inspiration) but I hope to craft up a decent story about the combination of the two!
Update, used a little bit of color picking from Mista Spooge (http://goodbrush.com)!

Art must be some malicious sickness akin to melancholy or lazyness, because it's killing my microprocessor programming grade by sucking up the last 2 hours instead letting me study for tomorrow's test :)

C&C desperately needed! This started out as a joke of all the sleezy armored girls out there, and also my desire to recreate an early concept of the Ghost before they added that horrid/cliche underware armor on her, cause otherwise I would've left her nude, but as it is now, I don't know how to paint white or light grey in shadow :( Help!

These are great studies. Your concepts are also kick ass. you need to change your major to art. That's some raw talent wasted. the only c&c that I can come up with is to make your edges sharper on your mech drawings. it'll give that metalic texture pop out more.
great thread! keep it coming!

haha thanks Theo, here's another babe, esque... still a wip. This is my "wtf am I doing I have a microprocessor programming final tomorrow and I still don't want to study"
I realized painting a non-abstract bg really gets me in to the mood for painting figures. This one started out really loose, only used texture brushes, and threw in as many colors as I could think of, and then some. Tried not to smudge up everything and managed to leave SOME of the original colors there. Still studying up spooge's work :D

the girl is based off of this (http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sketch042.jpg) which is it self based off dreamofdoll.com (http://www.dreamofdoll.com) (the face anyway)
I really, REALLY didn't think it was going to be any more than pure crap but it turned out not nearly as bad as was expecting.. had to repaint the face though, first try was a mess and will never see the light of day.
edit>oh wow didn't even realize how off the pose is right now. Heh. I've only been working on the upper half in a separate file. Still a lot more to do before I start detailing... eventhough I started already on the face... spent about... 90min so far I think.

How are you coming with that 50head stuff, id really like to see how you were coming on with that, as the last lot were really nice. You also got me into doing them so id its a really nice exercise :P
You say youre in class half the day, what about the other half of the day? :P

Oh yeah.... I've been slacking on the heads... everytime I look at Mal-1 or Zhuzhu it just makes me sad.
I'm in class for half a day,and then I go home and goof off. Somehow, it's really hard to concentrate after driving home... ok, I'll be really productive today, just wait! (I just discovered opencanvas again, the last robot was done in an OC session w/ a couple of guys, so I should have enough motivation..)
speaking of oc, is there a forum or a thread for getting people together in OC or pchat?

That looks great - don't know if that's zhuzhu speaking, or if OC really has a distinct pen tool - I really struggly to get that effect in PS, but you've pulled it off beautifully here.
And yeah there is an OC thing here somewhere, but I have no idea where. would like to go check it out myself.

I really like your stuff, but where did you get your art training from if your not an art student? I went to art school, but it was mostly theory and photo, not enough drawing and painting. I'm trying to use these forums as a sort of "art school" since I'm working now and can't go back. :( It looks to me like you're doing a little bit of the same thing?

<3
Your last few dumps are great but you already know im your fan... so liek even if i aint replying to everything im always watching in some sort of weird voyuer perverted way. It can be a bit of a bummer to not get replies but, ive changed my opinion on that lately. Im improving myself for myself and by the time i get good if my sketchbook is mainly art and not random bumps of "nice stuff." it'll hopefully be a nice bit of sex for the viewers eyes (haha yea...)
Less about me more about you!
This is going to be so fucking erratic youll have to try stay with me, exporting from oC > Photoshop? - save it as a bmp, save as or savecopy as... that seems pretty quality lossless to me, its what i do anyway then i just bump up the dpi or whatever and chip at it in Photoshop. Those mech designs are cool, particularly that half circle thing, ive not seen that before. The second one youre doing is starting to look like Koros work, know of koro? If not then check these out, its his old stuff but i really like it and you may do too, view at your discression though because theirs plenty of perverted shit in that thread, and it aint skat either so dont worry.

^ Those 2? I would, in a flash! I like how youve drawn their eyes in particular... wow.. in good with specifics
The way you give your ladies curves is cool... although that sketchbook page is pushing it a little bit, I checked out rebeccak's stuff lately and that hole shebang on bodies curves are only? convex and they dont concave... im trying to keep to that for a while for practice perposes. I can understand yours is stylistic but having a shin do that is pushing it :P <3 the curvy torsos though. Although the abdomen area (?) Seems a bit long... not to sure though cuz im piss poor at that.
One last thing, for your faces... im guessing opencanvas anddd in this :
http://gallery.plasmahawk.com/albums/userpics/10001/sp170.jpg
Are you using the watercolor and just using white? building it up like that? :o
Seems cool but you could always trying getting x/y/z values and then blocking them in as opposed to just working to white. Entirely up to you though, dont see any reason not to work your way :P
Fuck me sideways this is a sketchbook takeover... oh and do you have msn? Seems like the easiest way to contact someone if you ever wanna oC, cuz that would rock... hard!

nathonicus: I'm self taught. I've been lurking around CA, sijun, and cgtalk for the longest time (stopped for an even longer time). I don't know how much everyone else has, but I had to burn a couple of dvds to backup all the great works of art I've saved over the years.
JackWhat: thanks for the links! I loved Koro, that crazy ass guy. Didn't know he was Japanese though, figured it'd be french (I thought of Bengal :) Anyway I was disappointed I couldn't export into PSD so I can retain the layers. Anyway, I'll get around to that spider bot eventually, unless I forget...
my quality varies a lot, it's because I'm in a state of transition between really sucky and not so sucky (it depends on my mood and patience), that and I sometimes post warmups or doodles I really should not. There're a lot of really bad drawings I never scan in =P
where did you read about the convex curves?? I couldn't find the thread I was thinking, the anatomy challenge 2? The head challenge ended, but I can't find the next one.
as for the face you asked, it was in PS, and yes I worked off of white for a good portion of it to make it super bright... it didn't have the effect I was after...
and yes I do have msn (it's in my profile now) we should OC if that's possible (I can't seem to ever connect to anyone)

The standard mechanized infantry of the military. It's modular connection module located behind the cockpit allows numerous attachments from extendable grapplers, manipulators, all-terrain legs, jet packs, observation modules, radar/communication/ECM/ECCM, sonar/weapon, rescue beds, experimental weapons, multi-pylons for ordnance deployment (3x rocket launchers, laser/gps/infrared/AI guided missile launcher, 20-40mm gattling cannons, 1 80-120mm cannon with twenty external ammo pack). The two box like attachments at the head of the cockpit are evasion/defense mechanism such as smoke grenades and optical flares and anti-missile defense, which can be replaced with single rocket launcher/20mm cannons or zero-range manipulators (useful for the unlikely-but-climatic hand-to-hand combat). At the head of the cockpit is a defense mechanism (still in testing) that deflects 120mm shells with a high-intensity EMF.

Your drawings of mecha and women is so....sexy. I think I'll put a subscription on this thread. I like modeling hot mecha. Would you mind if I model anything I like that I see on this sb?
Well, it's not so much mecha, as it is your particular style of mecha. I just like them. They aren't the gundam style. They aren't the semi-biologically shaped ones (Like metal gears from mgs2 or mgs4). They're not overly blocky like battletech mecha (which are very old-school designs, seeing how far battletech dates back). They're just right. I dunno, maybe anatomically probable while eye-pleasing at the same time are the right words.
Also, I aspire to be a game artist while I am yet a Computer Science major. Yeah, our two majors have their differences, but I know how you feel. I think I do. Stuck in one place when you'd rather be somewhere else entirely.

Hmm it seems switching over to a new host fubared my gallery... sorry about that.
Hope it's ok to revive such an old thread. Getting back into painting but my designs have gotten so bad... need to get that up to speed...
Been really busy lately... hmm finally have time after midterms..
so here are some odds and ends of my sketches since... gosh october last year:

So... I don't have much really... got a couple of projects in the burner right now. School is killing me what with lab after lab. But I do manage to squeeze in 20min every other day and do a speedy (below). I started up a thread for 20min paintings from ref. They're relaxing and readies me for bed after a long day/night of debugging/studying....

I'm digging your digital paint skills Omi. Can I ask, with those do you block in everything or do you at times just dive in with the color?
Omi-kun
March 1st, 2008, 08:36 PM
Hmm for the no opacity paintings I do block them in. For the last one with the shirtless guy I block the face in and randomly paint the the body with a few colors.

Nice paint here. I also went to UT, but I live in space city now. Your first mech wasn't bad. You got skillz! Good luch with the work. Did you have any drawing or painting proffessors?
Omi-kun
March 6th, 2008, 06:05 PM
haha I like your name cout<mecha. What major were you at UT? I'm still working on the mechs. I don't generally like anything I do... but I'm starting to dislike them less, so that's a good thing. No I never had any drawing or painting professors. I went to a few art classes informally and it sucked horribly. I don't mean to sound arrogant but no one drew as well as I did, and if they did it took them a painfully long time to do it. It feels like almost nobody in art major actually likes to draw or practice in their spare time. It's sad.
Ok guys, if you want to mimic what I do, don't mimic the time I do it. Pace your self out. I've been painting... more or less like this for two years now so I've had quite a bit of experienced. If you want to paint well, I recommend doing the following:

I've been in a creative jam, can't design anything at all... so I resort to photoshoping :D
I'm still looking for my perfect mech, and I think I have made a step closer with this rehash of the Gundam ES-X it has a lower center of gravity and a slightly more durable sensor module. I'll rehash it some more tonight.

Used another similar mecha painting for reference. That painting was posted December of 06 prob at sijun where I found it, dunno who it's by. Any who, here's a concept of the early in the history of mecha when designs were still conservative and engineers used what they knew was a sturdy cockpit design.
It has a sensor module similar to the ones on the Cobra attached to the under side of a 50 cal machine gune (to be refitted with a 30mm vulcan in later versions) two multi-purpose pylons, capable of carrying 4 rocket launchers, 16 hell-fire missiles, 4 long range anti-air missiles, or any combination of them. There is another cannon fitted in the back, for anti-missiles (not a very good place I know, but where else could you put it?? I guess at the top huh... but that would ruin the silhouette!). Main engines are housed in the upper thighs, free the lower extremities of unnecessary weight for greater mobility. There are pads on the knees in case it trips forward and something in the back in case it topples backward. haven't really thought too much on the feet yet...
C&C on my mecha design would be great!

No I don't know AJtron unfortunately, I'm just an EE student drawing whenever I can.
I just got my new battery. Been painting on it and I think I can squeeze 2-3 hours worth in the next figure drawing session :D

Awesome and inspiring stuff, Omikun ^_^
It was nice to finally meet you at last night's life drawing session, too.
Keep it up...oh, and you used Painter X for some of these figure paintings right? I'm learning Painter, and I was wondering if you'd show me how you did those sometime ^_^

Never thought an engineer could paint like this :P j/k It's great someone with that background getting this good at art. I used to be an electrical engineer student too, getting into control systems before I switched to something more art related. I like drawing these more than the boring circuit diagrams and equations hehehe.
Anyways, it seems you are having fun with these. Would like to see your previous work in the last pages, but somehow is not being displayed. Anyhow, your figure work is getting better. It's awesome how fast you are getting with them. The mech designs are cool too, nice shape variation and rendering. Seems your imaginative figure work would need some improvement, which can mainly be achieved by studying some anatomy and applying it to your figure work to get a better understanding for the imaginative work. Just a suggestion. Keep looking forward for more! :D

those are beautifull anatomy stuides, and beautifull mech designs... i`m so jelous about your engineering experience whatever field
exactly you are :] can you give an example of how it has helped you in your art?

CecelyV: It was nice meeting you too! I don't use Painter. Only Photoshop :(
Thanks Maestro Andres. I'm working on drawing without ref but it's hard. I still need a lot more practice yeah.
Mattinian: EE has taken so much time away from drawing that it makes me want to draw :) That's the only example I can give.

Omi-kun;
Your postings keep getting better in both figure and mech renderings; especially with this last one!
Whats just as amazing is that your going for a EE degree and still have time to do all this. Are you taking it at UT? Most people spend their whole semester studying and doing labs till waay late at night.
Great stuff!

Sup man, this is Brian from the figurative session. Your environmental paintings are quite impressive. I'm really digging your mech concepts as well, not to mention that you have a strong color sense especially evident in your digital figurative paintings. You should keep add some more pages to this here sketchbook cause it's inspiring:) Hope to see ya again, in the meantime keep me informed of your art stuffs.

Thanks guys! I haven't been doing much art lately other than what I have been doing at the AVAA stuff and those have been pretty bad lately. But I am done! Graduated out of EE from UT. All those long hours at 2nd floor ENS has been worth it. Check out my senior design project with 3 other awesome guys: Rosie the self balancing robot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmcQKV-EbX4)
Oh I guess I have a legitimate update, it's not much. I seem to be more interested in making robot stuff than art these days. But then again that is probably because I haven't been surfing the forums of late.

background. That is an impressive self balancing robot you've designed. Nice lighting on the Mech pilot, keep us updated!

big update! There's a bunch here, a collection of what I've been up to lately, or rather, within the past month. Finally got over my dry spell during spring break. I don't think this is all I've done, but it's most of the ones I'd want to show...
There are... portraits of friends, of a Korean pop star, of space ships, more space ships for an RTS, mech for a commission, a Homeworld fanart tribute, a Gurren lagann fan art of Yoko, and the beginning of an asteroid mining station for a personal universe I'm working on.
Found a whole bunch of brushes I've downloaded over the years and I've been playing with them. There's probably more than a hundred in my preset right now and I can't seem to ever find the same brush twice. How do you guys texture metal anyway? I'm having a really hard time making it look right for the mech piece. It needs to be uber polished so I'm really taking my time with it, and even piecing together from a 3D render to make sure the parts are lit right.
Omi-kun

Hey man, your latest updates are wonderful! I've enjoyed watching the progression of your mech designs, they are becoming more and more advanced.
The textures you've incorporated in your figurative work are pleasing and add
great variety to the piece. Awesome stuff, hope to see you sometime at a local life drawing session.
