Cool man. You're off to a good start. Keep up with the anatomy and always ask yourself "is this really what I'm seeing?" strive for perfection even if it does take you a long time. Always refine what you are drawing and I gurantee it will help you. You will be able to train your eye a lot better. And draw from life as much as you can. Take your sketchbook with you everywhere, seriosuly, EVERYWHERE. I carry a small one with me like it were my wallet, wouldn't leave the home without it. Keep at it man and draw everyday!

Just keep on practicing, your anatomy still has issues. I like the composition to your illustration, But think about edges and planes and how light affects that. Your edge work in the background needs to be really soft...its far off in the distance. When I squint down at your drawing...some of the buildings blend in with the background.

thanks for you advice Smitherines. i know i still need work on the anatomy, and ill continue to study it :)
took your advice on the speed paint concept.
made sense.
so i changed it a bit. hopefully its a bit better! thanks again!

hey there. just dropping an advice:
do direct observations of anatomy as frequently as possible, look at the mirror for example.
Keep an eye for the line of the shape; assumption always leads to the object being different than it actually is.
Practice is key, keep it up.

Just keep practicing your drawing. I think on your speed paint, try using bigger brushes first then go to the smaller ones. for instance on the landing pad, it looks messy and confusing, when you could have just used a bigger brush and make it in fewer strokes. And for the highlights on the dome part, dont put them on the edge unless its a rim light from the back. The highlight should be moved over a bit more and it will give the effect of more roundness. Just light any kind of ball to get the idea of what i am talking about. hope that helps.

thanks for the comments guys. definately something i can build on and
work towards.
doottles yesterday before school (just about 30 minutes worth)
tried drawing my pet lovebird....kinda hard when he wouldnt
sit still :D
http://dimitrioskounios.com/Portfolio/conceptart/sketchbook/sbapr1.jpg
and one i did today, focusing on the hand. using mine as refrence.
did these in about 45 minutes.
http://dimitrioskounios.com/Portfolio/conceptart/sketchbook/sbapr1_b.jpg
and a quick question,
what are the best anatomy books to have as good reference. i have 2 or 3, and i could use some better ones. just curious.
and i know this isnt a drawing, and ill probably start a 3d thread for it after this pic, but i started modeling the concept i came up with, a floatin city thingy. we'll see how it turns out:
http://dimitrioskounios.com/Portfolio/sketchbook/WIP_city.jpg
about 1 hrs worth of modeling. lots to do still.
thanks again.

hey all:
did this little ditty tonight. just a quick rough idea/concept
im trying to come up with a final project for my 3d/animation corse before i head out into the real world and look for a job. we have about 3 months to complete it, so it should be top notch stuff. well...im hopin mine will be...i need a job/money!
originally i had something else in mind before that would also involve a little animation (our finals are supposed to be geared towards what we want to do.....i know modeling quite well....so im going that route....but i also wanted to do animation...we'll see, maybe if i have time i could animte this/the final)
anyways, im picturing a beast rider of some sort. sorry if you cant read my chicken scratch. :blahblah: a rider ontop of a very bad ass looking creature.
having trouble what i want for the lower body/legs so i left it for now.
any ideas or suggestions on what you would like to see, im very open to a few suggestions!
oy....
also did some face studies but the GF is using the pc with the scanner playing her sims.... :|
upload those some other time then

heres a concept pice i did last night.
i took a different approach to this one and did a technique (i cant remember his name for the life of me) that i learned the other day. one where you make a bunch of abstract thumbs, put them together, and find your images. but he made his out of copic markers (which i want!) i did mine in PS.
i found and made this one out of 6 thumbs i made:
http://dimitrioskounios.com/Portfolio/conceptart/enviromentconcept001_a.jpg
this image is too big so ill post the link:
its for my final project in 3d. these are the 2 things ill be working on (along with a low poly game model) in the next 2/3 months.

near completion for my warrior/knight dudes weapon.
wanted to make something different so i combined
a mace, spear and axe into one.
heres what i got so far (modeled in less than a day)
http://www.dimitrioskounios.com/Portfolio/wip/weapon009.jpg
i was going for a realistic skull, but i got this different stylized one. since its
going to be a "fantasy" piece, it doesnt matter, and im happy with it. so for now thats what the skull will look like ;)

hey dude, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! i'm loving your 3d environments! top notch stuff. lets see that stuff textured! keep rocking those anatomy studies too. the last ones came out reallly nice, just watch those scratchy lines. try using longer, more unified strokes. like a sword slash or something. it's more effective in long slashes that a bunch of choppy ones. hope that makes sense. peace out dude

I was thinking when I was looking at your earlier life drawings that you needed to do some muscle studies, and now I see that you're doing just that.:rendered: Your foot studies and 3D work are looking great.
I noticed that in many of your digital paintings, like that Triceratops beast (which I'm eager to see in 3D), you're mixing black in to darken the colors. Adding black muddies a color and kills it. Instead, make shadows a cooler, less saturated color. At the same time, make highlights warmer.
Nice sketchbook! I'll be checking back.

thank you Moai. thats why i love this site...you post something...if you need to practice/study something, people tell you (and nicely..unlike EP or DA). but yeah...ive been drawin some sort of anatomy every day lately. somethin i been tryin do for a long time.

been playing around in 3d again. kind of a mental block of what to really make then i remembered i wanted to make a siege tower of some sort...just something to practice UV laying out and try to find the best/fastest route to do it...cuz really..laying out uvs stops me from finishing models unfortunately.

Very nice mountain city thumbnails. I don't think you've found the magic one yet, though. Like like the first and last ones the best, so maybe something that's a mixture of the two. That's only an opinion, though. Excellent foot, studies, too. You seem to be getting a thorough understanding of its anatomy. More thorough than mine, that's for sure.:rendered:
Be sure to think about color temperature when you're coloring, though. On that knight, all your shadows, midtones, and highlights seem to be just different values of the same local hue. Try mxing in some warmer colors for the highlights and cooler colors for the shadows. On the red cloak, for example, the lighter areas can tend towards orange and the darker areas can tend towards purple.
Keep practicing! I'll be checking back.:rendered:

this isnt a sketch or anything art related, but i thought id give everyone a look at one of my love birds. we didnt buy him like this. in fact he was fine for the first few weeks we had him. then all of a sudden he started plucking his feathers out for no apparent reason.
thankfully he has stopped now and they are starting to grow back in slowly.
he took them all out through his entire body, and parts of his wings on the back. he looked hilarious when he had no feathers. we (me and my gf) only laugh at him now cause we know he will be ok.
oh, our other one is a fat love bird whos quite snobby. this one loves the attention but went "emo" on himself. cant win i guess.
so here he is with his feathers growing in now:

Emo birds man, glad he put down the razors:)
Good SB, I am a fan of the 3-d so you hit a spot there, you've got some nice renders too, i'm guessing you use mental ray:)
Anyway, the biggest thing I see is that your colored stuff feels relatively flat, and my suggestion is this:
After you get a set of base colors in an image, darken the areas that are intented or close together (in 3-d its occlusion and is what makes mental ray look so good, places like armpits and creases just don't get as much light:) ) Than add a light source one at a time, remember that no light source can cover more than half the form (like shining 1 light at a basketball, it can only be half covered with that light etc etc) And then add your fill light and ambient light whatever. Its a great way to do a digital painting thinking in 3-d which you clearly understand~* Even if you already know this I just thought i'd casually throw it in:)
Good work its good to see someone who does everything, and thnx for the tag.

Hey dkounios!
Your sketchbook is looking pretty good, and its coming along well, my advice
is to try to explain the form with lines "better" You leave a lot of areas empty
for example the Mech-legs! use some diagonal lines to clear that up for example, just try to think of how the form/shape looks in your head.
You do 3D , so you probably have an easy time to visualize things if you have been doing it for a while.. Thats it for now, keep it up dude!

luv evanescence :) I see you have tons of stuffs here. Look like you are very busy. The more you do the better u'll be. I used to do 3D stuffs in Maya and Zbrush and I know how hard it is. it takes a lot of patience and hardwork. Study drawing + painting too will be very helpful to you in the long run even when when you're doing 3D. Both your 3D and drawing are above the average. you also have some pretty good concept/idea here and you will go pretty far.

Lookin' good so far, lots of study (which looks to be paying off) and lots of fun stuff too. That ami lee portrait is pretty accurate, I knew it was her from the get-go.
I'd say your biggest weaknes right now is colour. Don't worry, it's mine too :\ Best thing to do is colour studies. After I'm done some more faces and hands I plan on doing a lot of references colour studies in PS (no colour picker!) to help develop my sense of colour more. I'd suggest mixing some of that in to your regemin too.

Busy busy busy, lots of stuff being pumped out, good show on that!
I don't know how far along that last one is, but don't be afraid to let musculature show through on creatures, and make sure the creature's design actually makes sense. A creatuer with such heft like that would probably have its legs directly or nearly directly under it to support the weight, as having them spread like that would put uneeded strain on the muscles.

some more updates for the night. i plan on going hardcore this weekend as I begin planning out my next 3d demo reel (the one that will hopefully get me more bites than nibbles) :xpld:
anyways, i plan on doing 5 concepts and using at least 4 of them (2 high poly and 2 low poly game models.)
if you saw before, I attempted some sort of beast thing...it didn't really flow for me (and others). This time around, since I am very into the whole CA.org thing and accepting all harsh crits, I want to make this reel really good. And I believe you guys can help. Cuz if I have good concepts than I can get some good models :D
anyways, stay updated for the other ideas. as of right now, I have been working away when I have time at the mountain beast (the previous model redone). I tweaked the original a bit more (bottom version), did some sort of variation (top version) and grew him a bit more (size comparison).

thx for posting in my thread :D
soooo....coming from your first post here, I see a lot of improvement.
However, there is of course always something new you want to tackle.
For example that EOW, it is really flat right now, you started it in greyscale, which is basically a good thing, but you rushed on way to early. render it completely in greys, than slap on the color afterwards. One thing at a time, otherwise you miss a lot and are overwhelmed by the task.
same for heads...
ähm, sorry for the speech, but it might help you as it did help me. just always take your time until one stage is ready and you can confidently move on ;P
keep on rocking

few more doodles, ill post more tonight hopefully!
3s: the sculpting was practice and took about an hr..the real issue i was trying to solve was rendering in ZB without them darn jagged edges (anti aliasing). so in all, it took me about 2 hrs to finally figure it out and render (it was just a darn click of a button too....)

saw an image of a beetle with a smaller beetle. it was supposed to be a speed paint and practice but in about 2 hrs it turned into this sand beetle creature thing. weird.

gotta move on to the next ones (4 more to do at least) so
this is it for now, and thanks to everyone who helped me with it :yayca:

I'm working on a personal project, and I want to create a certain environment. Iit's a valley, known as a "pass" in this world that I'm creating. Anyway, it does have a small back story where an ancient race used to live there long ago, but now are extinct and the lands are barren. The Pass is going to lead up into a higher elevated ground leading to a huge fortress. Within the valley/pass, you can see old ruins from the ancient race. Also, since this land has been consumed by evil, tiny rivers of lava flow through on the sides. I'm trying to get this valley big enough to have an army march through/in it. i know i know..your thinking lord of the rings now..but its not! anyways, I'll be speed painting a bunch more ideas for this.

a siege tower I started tonight. about 3-4 hrs worth, maybe a bit less.
speed modeling!
I was thinking it would be used by the dwarfs.and the little slots under that wooden port, would be where their archers or spear men could poke out. I still gotta add the top opening mechanism, and the back to show how it would be pushed, some banners, etc. just for fun :)

its only 11pm tonight and its raining cats n dogs outside.
just recently bought a condo and got engaged too. quite the week.
me and the gf (now fiance) have been living at my parents to save up some cash while looking for a house. we weren't strapped for cash or anything at all like that...but we realized how much we could save in the 3-4 months and did it.
and, its been 7 and a half years so I figured why not level her up from GF to Fiance. now another 7 and a half for the wedding!! :bashful:

I enjoyed looking at your work. I think the rhino beast is cool. You should try doing another version with the backlegs and thighs being thicker and shorter. This way the weight is on the back leg and he has a slope instead of straight across. Just a suggestion, it looks cool though.

hey man the 3d work is looking great, and i like the landscape speed paints. i think you could play around with color a little more though. that matte painting is interesting but the perpectives on the photos are all different so it looks like that tower's about to topple over. anyways congrats on the engagement and keep posting!

Just some quick sketches of some sci fi creatures
http://www.dimitrioskounios.com/Portfolio/conceptart/charactercreatures/creatures.jpg
the last one there interested me, and for some reason I was thinking about those big vases people have as decorations. why not place 2 of those vases on the back of a ugly weird looking creature, where alien eggs come out of? And what if this creature was a palm walker, had a short stumpy tail, drooled alot, and was kinda fat?
so using the last concept from the previous row, I started going 3d on it. WIP with a paint over following.

this newer one is the result of 1hr-45 min.
