Skip this part if ur not too fond of waffle...

hey boys and girls, first off, just wanna repeat what roughly 1 billion guys have said before me. This website rules! as do the extreme artists that post their works here. i have learnt more in the two months ive been lurking on this website than i have in two years of doodling so...gee thanks guys!

Second thing is that almost every artist on here is 10 times better than me (there are exceptions, I mean im better than Marko but then again who isnt?!?:tihi: ) and for that reason im well aware im in store for sum heavy crits and minamal ass pats as you concept.orgians(thats wat people are calling u all i hope u realise?:x ) have become reknown for world wide! im really trying to come to this site with head held low and humbly, giving u guys the respect u deserve hopefully in exchange for sum crits?if EVER i come across as arrogant please tell me and know i really dont mean too thats just how i am sum times...

stop skipping im no longer waffling

ok so heres my master plan ive recently bought three sketch books of which my aim is to do at least 1 page in each per day, these sketchbooks are as follows
1)A4 From reference *
2)A3 Studies **
3)A4 from my amazing brain ***
the pages i post will be marked with the corresponding 'stars' so hopefully there wont be much confusion, gonna start with sum stuff from the past couple of days so u get a feel for where im at...

* I try to do as much from life as i can, but unfortunatly more often than not these pages normally consist of copys from the daily newspaper, i know its sucks and im really gonna try to get more life art in here
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/referencesketchbook1.gif
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/referencesketchbook2.gif
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/referencesketchbook3.gif
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/referencesketchbook4.gif
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/referencesketchbook5.gif

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/referencesketchbook7.gif
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/referencesketchbook8.gif

** ok next up is my studies i like to do these in A3 cause i dunno i just prefer to work bigger on studies, at the moment im working my way through the basics of anatomy this month is gonna be purely head(smankeymankeymankeymankeymankeymankeys), u see me going onto anything else slap my wrist, not hard though i bruise like a peach, also at the moment everythings taken from burne hogarth, sorry bout the poor camera pics
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/DSCF0028.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/DSCF0029.jpg

***now it REALLY starts to get depressing ive got really mixed emotions about this sketchbook sometimes i think its essential to my 'art growth' other times i think all im doing is filling up a perfectly good sketchbook with worthless doodles, lemmi know what u think?everything and anything purely from my brain, def my weakest area at the moment,
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/ownstuff1.gif
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/ownstuff2.gif

ok so there u go i dont really know why ive chosen to do it this way but it seems to be getting me drawing on all the essentials so, hey what ever works right?

im gonna draw daily however i might not udate daily ive forgotten how long all this stuff takes to scan in, upload, resize etc. ive lost almost 2 hours drawing time dammit!i also have other school work and stuff that im doing as well as this which i will prob upload monthly or summet?anyhoo heres hoping i keep to this

cheers for reading my oh so boring waffle

didnt really like doing these cause althoug hogarths book is amazing wen it comes to the specific measurements for parts of the eye nose lips etc he dosent give them so im just copying his drawings rather than taking his teachings and creating my own stuff like i was doing before, still thats why he made a whole other book devoted to just the head i guess....

Hey man, nice colour stuff. Some good ref drawings.
Form is a bit off, but thats just practise.
You've got something weird going on with a lot of the necks you've drawn.
When you are drawing from your head, have a peek at passing peopel, or guys in the pub, and it'll help you re-assess the form. In fact, just spend every waking moment LOOKING and taking in.
Keep on going.
Hope uni interviews went well.

i think you have some strong pencil stuff, and a pretty great understanding of the human figure. I would love to see more finished works, and maybe focus on stronger lines and higher contrast shading. Excelllent posts, keep 'em coming

HI Danny, got ur email, so here goes...

First off, the watercolor painting, and the 3 point perspective ink drawing stood out for me most, the colors in the painting, and ur observation is good, and the perspective drawing was striking too...consider drawing environments
:)
For life drawing, public/newspapers studies are good too; try and 'finish' them more with a softer pencil, add some dark/light contrasts, and try to be more sparing of the lines you put down on ur paper. So far, your sketches have an outline thats at least 3-4millimetres deep, causing a fuzzy line around your sketches.
Try drawing without taking your pencil off the paper - this is a good exercise, as it will teach you to draw the contours and shapes of the subject, and can help you with observing in a different light.
Sometimes, when drawing clothed, seated people, it helps to look at the negative and positive 'shape' within the figure to get the proportions right(I hope Im making sense) Negative and positive shapes help you measure distances and form; for example, the space in between a bent arm and the torso, can make such a big difference as to 'how' you draw ur figures. Master this technique, and you'll be able to place one line down exactly as it should be, instead of lines that are unsure and fuzzy.

Keep studying anatomy. (as your doing anyhoo) and the relationships between one muscle and another. When one muscle is bent, this will automatically affect the closest near by, so be observant in this matter.

Charcoal:
Try this, get a big piece of charcoal and cover your page in it. Then rub your hand over the page till its toned and you've rid the paper of exess charcoal powder. This will be you 'mid-tones'
Using the putty rubber for highlitghts, and a piece of charcoal for shades, experiment by drawing in 'tone's rather than as a 'pencil sketch'
Charcoal IMO is more a tone based medium, and cant or shouldnt be used as a pencil. Its too soft to be delicate with. The putty rubber acting as highlight is just a beautiful way of working, you can mold the putty rubber into a point for finer hightlights, make it into a ball to cover a larger area etc etc
I work this way because its fun and produces results(check my thread if ya want)

You on the right lines my friend, the only way you can truly improve your skill to work hard and draw all the time. At home, in the pub, cafe, on a train - the more you draw from life be it nudes or the public, the more you'll understand your own abilities, and how to develop them.

As for Uni, find a course that will give you what YOU want. If it gives you like 50% of what you need, go for evening classes or weekend classes. Look for drop-in life drawing classes too, they are untutored soem of the time, but looking at other peoples work can be influencial for you(sometimes crushing as theres ALWAYS someone whos awesome in the class) but fuck it, your always better than someone else! hehehe
I really do hope Im making sense, I really do...if not PM me to elaborate on more on subjects you dont understand:)

Happy to help
Mollyx

also, with regards to painting, keep at it. Create a color chart(childish I know, but so so useful) and keep experimenting!

ok so just a quick update of sketch book one and three, im still working on my anatomy sketchbook but im doing longer studies so im halfway through a page...

*as a result of trying to have more control over line weight and values everythings a bit light!im going to keep trying to push the contrasts in these studies, bare in mind that im very raw at this method

Hi man. I tell ya, I can see improvement from the top of the page to here! So you're moving fast have a go at ultra loosley laying down skull construction, then lightly again lay down the face. It should help you visualize the form in prespectve easier as you're not commiting to a dark line straight away.

DannySketch
April 27th, 2006, 02:14 PM
hey cheers kian man means alot and i'll try out wat u suggested, thanks alot for stopping by

just a quick update again from sketchbook 1 & 3

im gonna update with more stuff from my sketchbooks tonight but for now i'd thought i'd show you why i dont plan to work with colour for at least another half a year.

im doing four SP's for a school project and i figured it would be cool to do one in watercolour seeing as that seemed to be the only colour medium that didnt make me want to impale myself on a really heavy spike sumwhere, however i seem to have lost my ease with that as well...

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/dannysketch88/selfthing.jpg

to be honest im not too bothered about the colours, i havent studied colour theory yet so the fact that their dirty and muddy as hell is less annoying. wats really getting on my tits however is the structure of the face, cause fuk me if i know wats wrong with it. which is annoying because i thought i had gotten to a stage where i could at least KNOW where ive gone wrong with summet, even if i was unable to fix it. i know its summet to do with the left eye, and my first thought was it was too small, then i changed that and it didnt fit in with the structure of the face at all, and now ive gotten to a stage where the left side is COMPLETELY screwed up and the colours wont settle there! i mean i aint got a clue, sum1 PLEASE help me out on this?

Kian
April 30th, 2006, 03:57 PM
Looking good man! All it is now, is keeping at it. (watch your line quality, however, it'll come with practice)
Remeber DC's rules. Sometimes, aim to fuck up. I use a pencil with a snapped off clip. To remind me i'm creating something using a "broken" tool. It helps ground me and reminds me of the 3 rules.

DannySketch
April 30th, 2006, 09:24 PM
cheers kian man the road ahead of me's one hell of a long one and ur right using dirty C's three rules is one of the only ways u can keep sane, again thanks for replying man

*a strange things happening, this book which used to be my fave is rapidly becoming the one im least motivated for, still i'll keep them up

Don't talk yourself down so much, Danny - there's some admirable effort and considerable improvement visible here! One thing I'd recommend you keep your eye on in all your exercises is placement and proportion - there's some slanting evident in some of your sketchwork that could be corrected before toning. I'd suggest either lightly sketching your big graphic shapes and features first and checking to make sure everything has appropriate balance and placement (don't be afraid to draw lines across to be sure, especially for facial features) or really develop your ability to relate one shape to another (which is harder and usually comes by extensive use of the first method).

If you want to push your line quality and control more, there are a few simple exercises you can do. Drop two points and try to connect them with one confident line. Draw circles until you can draw one with confident radial symmetry. Draw ellipses until you can draw one with confident bilateral symmetry (again, don't be afraid to drop a line and check). Draw compound curves until you can draw one with smooth transitions. You can do all this in less than half an hour, and it's a great way to warm up for the day - I do it every morning, and it's helped me a lot.

Keep it coming!

TheGnoll
May 4th, 2006, 03:16 PM
jeez man, don't worry, be happy :D
you've got some nice works here, very good work with portraits and sort. But maybe you could try and vary the subject, just to keep motivated...try full figure studies, vehicles, creature, anything you see or you think about...AND, try and vary mediums from time to time, it could be interesting. As i always say, i envy people which manage to draw from reference and actually and actually find the patience to render something, 'cause i just can't :D

keep it up n posted, SB actually help :D

Idiomatic- thanks a ton for the detailed crit, coming from someone of your talent it would be stupid for me not to take it up so expect my next update to be filled with sum of the stuff u suggested, again thank u so much for this crit dude

Very good Danny. I can see speedy improvement! Big time. your observation sketches are great. But I can still see the timidity in heads from your head. Feathering is still there. Try draw a face with a thick line not taking it off the page. This should help build confidence. But I'm getting impressed!

tensai man i dont think i really have to tell you how much a comment from yaself means, your stuff has been a fave of mine for a while now, exspecially ur inks, superd, i'll def try out wat u said.

theres one more of these but my scanner fecked up and i cant be assed to restart the comp, i had some pencils too but all half finished and i was getting tired of posting the same picture again and agian and again with just one more mark than the next so i was gonna leave those till 2morrow anyway, first 2 are from life, the third is from the paper, i think its gonna take me a while for my life drawing inks to start to look any good, but you guys were right, it was at least a laugh, shall keep doing them.:yayca:

OK so REALLY this should be day 22 of summer, but i had to take sum time out for me alevels, just kinda so i at least had somthing to write in the exams, im still gonna fail them but meh!point is ive finished them, had a weekend of drunken good times, recovered and now have absolutely no excuse not to draw untill my fingers bleed apart from lazyness...so we'll see how i do...heres a catach up a few tiny bits and pieces i managed to squeeze in between revision over the past 13 days

*a wip from ref still gonna try and push the more finished face in this, but am starting to get tied of this page>:|
***lots of heads and stuff
****and me pen exercises, i really thought hard about tensai's comment both about my lines being timid and the affect added line weight on shadowed sides would have, i was really happy that tensai liked the style my timid lines gave these exercises, but looking at them realisticly these exercises were ment to help my line control, weight and confidence, if they were still timid i needed to work on that which i tried to do in the 2nd image of these...any comments?

just a small update, hopefully i'll be adding more tonight, including some design studies (from fear of death by badger)

however after a non too happy results day for my a levels (i passed but only just) this really cheered me up, i went to pick up my sketchbooks and came across my year 11 GCSE book, it had hardly anything in it, but did have this self portrait!

this was two years ago, i was 16,

CA has brought me so fuking far and i love u all because of that.i did a quick up to date self portrait beneath just to make myself more happy, i keep thinking lately im just never gonna get as good as the guys on here, then i saw this and figure 'hell ive come this far, why not'

I like the last one Danny, so much improvement here btw.

Look at the legs of the character though, pay attention to where his feet are pointing and always question whether you have drawn a complete figure, or just added parts together. The torso is pretty nice imo, but you need to connect this properly with the hips and legs. Keep going dude, your getting better all the time.

Woah dude your rendering is moving fast, really cool work. Good to see your focusing on the basics at the moment like form and shape.

Really like the second page it has a good sense of space and perspective. Your making progress with likeness too, a lot of recognisable faces in the ref page.

keep at it!

Just popped my head in to see what you were up to.

The amount of work you're putting in with the still lifes etc is really impressive. And like Adam says, your rendering is coming on super fast. That page full of faces is very impressive. That Q in there?

It really doesn't seem to matter how old somebody is - if they start now, they'll accelerate at the same level as everyone else. Seriously impressed with the speed you're moving at, dude.

Damn man youve got some really nice rendering going on in your sketches and some really solid observational drawing.
The only thing I can suggest at the moment is the structure and fluidity of your full figures. They seem just a tad stiff. Have a go at doing some gestures in simple stick form to start off, trying out extreme and simple poses. But your stuff Is still pretty sick man.

Chr wow i must admit i havent noticed that before, thanks for pointing it out to me i'll work on it.

ok so first some more still life thats a response to my 'dead drawings' (i was being ironical:bashful:) post, link is in my sig

next is another page of faces from reference, then we have the 'james land' thing sorry mate couldnt be bothered to finish it :( yeah i know i suck, and the last one is last weeks, chow, not very orginal but i dunno i am only just starting to do full figure drawings wanna have fun with the 'un orginal' stuff for a while,

oh and on a slightly peeved note, me dads gona and replaced our perfectly good old scanner with a crappy new one which is making all the scans come out all crappy.....so meh.

ive started a '5 hour a day' personal studie thing that i am doing on top of my foundation course, which includes still life, drawing from ref and imagination, animal studies, anatomy studies, colour theory and charcoal drawing, i have included all my work except for the colour theory as its mainly just reading and making colour wheels so far. oh and i am also working through a scott robertson rendering DVD but thats also pretty much just note making so far so no updates from there.

1) my self portrait for the SP day

2) next four are some more still life, trying to free up my technique, last ones a WIP

3)next two are reference studies

4)next two are animal studies

5)last more hogarth studies of the back. yes yes, the photos suck :er:

mmm...life drawings look very good, good eye for value, and you have patiece too (i wish i had enought patience to do something like that), the hogart studies, the ref studies, they are all good. But i don't know why you're studying the detail proprieties of the torso, the neck and all those other hogart studies you did, without first understanding the whole basic structure.I mean, from what i see from your CHOW attempt, you've got good ideas, good rendering skills, but you still have to learn how and when to use reference, and most of all, the whole basic structure of the body is not that clear to ya.If i were you, i'd check out loomis for the first part (basic proportions, mannequins, gestures etc) before going into detail with hogart (IMHO hogart can help you a lot with muscle masses, movement and "mechanics" of the body, but not with the basic)...hope you understand what i'm trying to say, and taking as a constructive crit ;)

keep 'em comin, make the updates regular!

Hey there brother. Just gotta say, Looking at the first post in this book compared to these latest one fills me with pride! What I love most is that instead of saying what you're gonna do [which is what most of my friends & classmates do] you do it and the work speak for itself, which is always the way IMO. You're doing great. All I can say is keep at it. Respect

Thanks for your comment in my SB, it hit the spot :teeth:
Looking thru your sketchbook, I definitely see vast improvement as well. I also see something inspirational ... you draw with a loving sensitivity. Your figures are emotive, heck, even your technology stillLifes have this hint of gentle sadness. I really like that.

In response the The Gnolls thorough comment, why don't you join me in my two new practices. The first one is alot of fun, it's taking the Loomis barebones skeleton and drawing tons of poses with it both from mind and ref. Using it to tell little stories, etc. I'm getting alot of good knowledge about movement and proportion in action, plus it helps me actively apply the anatomy I'm learning. Second one is fun too. Get a sports type DVD, whatever you enjoy, gymnastics, football, whatever. I have a breakdancing and a martial arts joint I've selected, and work through it frame by frame, drawing the figures in motion for 5 to 10 minutes a piece, minimal rendering, get a feel of how those pieces work together. Then we'll share our progress. (I'm gonna post some of mine as soon as my scanner bulb comes in.)

Nice work man. Thanks for the inspiration :.

These are looking good. Nice to see you taking on a Foundation year too, they are very helpful I found. Your rendering is improving, but sometimes the faces look out of proportion. Maybe you rushed into the detailing stage a bit (I know that feeling). You ever worked with some construction lines? I think they will help you a lot.
Good to see you experimenting with the black paper, but I think you'll need more experimenting. Foundation year has taught me to be more versatile and draw with anything you can pick up. Try going for a few days without using a pencil, its good fun :)

TheGnoll An excellent crit dude thankyou, i am 'on it' as it were, check back here for the next update, in the process of doing loads of the loomis 'stick figure' gestures, am gonna study loomis along side hogarth, rather than giving up on hogarth all together though, they seem to bounce off each other quite well, again cheers for the crit, its summet i have overlooked for far too long.

Kian cheers bro, means a ton :yayca:

max xiantu hey thanks man, i have already PM'd you saying i am up for that 'challenge' like i said to Gnoll check back next update for the loomis and gesture studies

Bendragon cheers for the crit and compliments man, i will take them all on board, thank you

ok so ive been MAJOR busy with college work lately and should be doing it even as i type this, but i havent updated in over a week (bad danny) so i thought i'd do another small update, i really need a free evening where i can photo and scan everything in(which, seeing as its 'fashion and textiles' for the next three weeks at college, i think i might get) :)

1)chow from summet like 2 weeks ago that i never got round to scanning in, a fairy hitman

2)a HORRIBLY rendered self portrait that i did at the start of last week, ive been so desperate to at least START to learn how to render like rodrigo and skeiff (both my age :() and this is what i get, grrr must work harder

3)first is a warm up for a still life and the second is a longer study of the same still life

Badger i really do need to thank you mate its your constant 'badgering' (hehe) on me about colour and design that made me really give it a go, and i am starting to enjoy it now, check back hopefully this evening for when i get round to scanning my A3 sketchbook for my first reall attempts at some 'colour and landcape' pieces.

pavelpangrac haha thanks alot mate.

jar cheers:)

max xiantu again thanks alot bro.

ok so i am splitting this update into 2 dumps this is all my A4 stuff cause thats nice and easy to scan, my A3 stuff should be coming later tonight and include painting (yes expect horrible noobness), enviroments and LOTS of bridgeman:)

First is a study from ref, i do ref studys from film magazines and wanted to do a study that look more like a 'final piece' than just a study so i arranged all the characters into a poster type thing,

The second page is me playing around with the ideas of those charcters in different skins and story, all from my head, but was getting incredibly impatient with it so its still a wip

next 2 are more ref studies, my art tutor challenged me to do quicker pieces experimenting with different methods of mark making, so from the first page downwards it goes 2h, 6b, biro, fine liner, then 2nd page, brush pen, calligraphy pen, and then three shades of grey brush pen.

next five are from life, first three focusing on line or warming up next 2 focusing on core shadows.

and lastly 2 process shots of the masters study workshop in the fine arts section i am working on, still, obviously, a wip

thanks alot for taking the time :)

EDIT:bah i'll update my A3 stuff 2moz i am just SO dam tied.

Bartovan thanks alot man, shall do

asoir haha cheers dude, i shall try!

ok so the first picture is the latest attempt at a few acyrilic paintings, the apple on the white part of the paper was how most of the paintings were coming out previously, but then i remebered a crit i was given by DSILLUSTRATION 'NEVER paint on white paper' always tone your paper first, its amazing how much more fun this simple thing makes painting for me, still have to finish the 'toned' apple so is still a wip

second are three thumbnails which are my first real stab at enviroments, and the result of some perspective studies, alot wrong with them, but i have to start somewhere

next lot is LOADS of bridgeman, as soon as i started the bridgeman book i went slightly nuts, overlapping studys, i just couldnt stop drawing, i 'freed up' my drawing style alot more, however i am trying to use hogarth studys here and there to make sure that i keep doing some longer studys.

lastly some more animal studies, and thats all

cheers for looking :)

PS:sorry for the horrible scan lines in some of these:O

Nice banana ;)
No seriously, I like the color work. The environment thumbnails are really cool too. I gotta take a stab at that.
Check the proportions on the master copy. I find it best to use tons of level and plumb lines when doing a master study.
The face poster are just plain excellent. I love the way you so nicely fill up a page. The overlaps are the jam!

Wow sweet Danny! That banana is indeed really nicely painted. Good job =D

Basically I'd say keep doing what your doing, but remember to put into practice the things you have learnt. Reinforce them in your memory and see how you can change or distort things to good effect. Keep up the updating spree my friend!

December 11th, 2006, 07:55 AM
Hiya mate.
Ok, heres goes.

thumb1:
This is by far my favourite as im taken into the image by the strong perspective which is counteracted by the washing lines that break up the hard lines. Its this balance in an image which increases visual interest. Analyse what windows look like when they're really small. The key is to indicate a window or vent. Look at Tensai's enviro work, and look at how he handles windows and building exteriors. Its genius!
Anyways, work on that thumb, its very promising.

thumb2:One of my main problems is that i cant see whats going on with the ground. You might wanna work on getting the ground in there.
Another thing is the composition. Imagine a little metal ball dropping from anywhere at the top of the image. Like a pinball machine, where will it fall off the page? This is the path your eye will take. At the moment my eye drops right off the bottom left hand corner. Not a good thing at all for an enviro concept.
To remedy this, Get some value behind the house on the left. You were right in putting trees at the bottom put they should be far more powerful in scale and value so that the eye [pinball] will rest at the house. Imagine you are trying to "frame" your focal point with supporting elements.

thumb3: The problem with this is probably the domination of the major hanger. When i squint i just see a giant arc. You did right in repeating shapes to increase scale, but theres very little extra detail. I know its hard to do when deadling with a little thumbnail, but youll be surprised what adding some dots here and there can do. If you put a staircase on the side of the hanger, scale will pop! and make the thing look massive
Try playing with tilting the horizon line also, keeping the pinball technique in mind.

Pm me if theres anything you want me to elaborate on mate :yayca:

Danny! Seeing your progress over the past couple of years is super inspiring! Kudos for all the hard work it's definitely been paying off.

Here's the few things I've noticed, and these are weaknesses that I'm also hammering on in my own work (that's so I don't sound like a douchebag for critting you on things that I myself haven't mastered).

Take more time with your lay in. What I mean is don't jump ahead to rendering. Make sure that your line drawing is PERFECT before you move on. You can learn more from 1 PERFECT drawing than 1000 imperfect ones. Otherwise you just repeat the same mistakes over and over. Would you rather have a full sketchbook of sloppy drawings or a near empty one with 5 mind blowing pieces? Slow it down and break it up into multiple sessions so that you can come back with fresh eyes. Lately I've been doodling for about and hour just to get the crap out of my brain so I can focus for a longer more delicate session. The cool thing about doing it slowly and carefully is that once you are ready to render you'll have spent so much time with every feature that you'll have a mental roadmap of all the planes and lighting. You'll almost be able to do it without reference. Then you can "carve" out the lights and darks with intention rather than simply copying patterns. I would avoid laying down large patches of flat color. Start out with your most shaded areas (at a step above your final value scale) then develop across the whole piece. After that start adding in the darkest darks and lighter blending greys all the while reinforcing your shadows. You'll never have to throw a bunch of long lines across the drawing this way.
The other thing to watch out for is shapes. Everything has a shape. This includes lines, shadows, highlights, negative space, etc... Make sure that these shapes have intention. Think of it as a puzzle with pieces that interlock and interelate. Each shape should push your eye around to another shape. This is where design comes in. As long as you think about and put effort into designing your shapes you'll be amazed by the results. One of the basic ideas is what my friend calls "the buddy system" every line and shape should have a "buddy"..... something that it relates and points to. In this way you can achieve rhythm not only in your lines but also in your masses.
I have to say again, meeting you was a great experience. Your attitude and work ethic are truly impressive. I expect to see awesome things from you in the years to come!

Quicksilver
January 15th, 2007, 04:42 PM
Very, VERY impressive, Dan. Christ, the effort is definitely paying off, mate!! Keep up the good work, and try and grab a pencil with a letter B on it for your studies sometime - they look like they could do with some darker shades in there.

Hope all is going well with your course. Have you applied for uni yet? Which ones you going for?

January 21st, 2007, 09:39 PM
Thought it had been a while since i popped by. Those ref studies are doing wonders and I can see that your paying attention to the planes and structure. I would suggest spending a bit longer nailed the proportions, you have a bit of a habit of making eyes a bit too small. Also pay attention to the relationships between values, this is very important to make something read properly if you are doing a tonal drawing. For example it is odd that on the faces the skin is lighter than the white of the eye.

Anyway your doing really well. Its all moving fast.
Oh and UPDATE.

Illustrations look good, in a style I'm pretty sure I've never seen from you, the monkey is the best of the group. Comic was mostly easy to comprehend, but I think the character's shoe laces can be gotten rid of since they're difficult to make out. It took me a while to see that the chick was timing him like in a race in that first image, they're too close together and his baggy clothes hide the track pose. When did Max say that?

timpaatkins cheers for the advice Tim:) unfortunately the title stays at least for now, I failed to get into a university, my application was deemed 'unsuccessful'. I’m not sitting here crying about it, its simply a reminder of how much I still have left to do. thanks again bro.

Mate these are effin great. Much respect on your progress.

I think you undersestimate yourself//

a tip for doing the cartoon colouring style. Try not to use black for your lines. Use a darker more saturated version of the same same colour you're outlining. Its like in graphic design, i hate seeing black used for the type. Esp when theres soo many colours in the world.

ill have a better chat with you later on. But you 5 stars from me. Simply because of your determination//

Hi Danny
Your linework is really confident, say for example in this http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=231166&stc=1&d=1194044992 , but also remember to vary line thickness'
Your drawing are really quite good, but I notice small mistakes in mostly everything( proportions off just slightly.)
Also the rendering has only a few values. Darker drawings create more interest, and having a wide range of values is really important too.

take this drawing( my fav ) from steak-tron http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/4831/dec0501vz1.jpg
the drawing is obviously darker than in real life, but because it's so dark you want to keep looking at it.
My best advice for you is to do some observational work of easy objects, jars, cups etc. Find the direction of the light source, find the darkess and lightest points and spend some time rendering it as best you can.
:)

tensai
November 5th, 2007, 05:59 AM
i think the line quality varies a bit with some really nice ones and then some lesser ones (who doesn't have that ey?). lines from today are less spot on, and less confident as the ones from the third for example. i really like the rendered out faces from today, they've got some cool shapes and good lively feeling about them.

DannySketch
November 5th, 2007, 07:30 AM
AlexC thankyou so much for the juicy crit, its given me a highly productive morning, i will get round updating soon with some proportion studies but for now i have done a couple of still life drawings, you see why i shy away from darker values?i have trouble controlling any contrast the darker i get. Thats why i love your pencils so much you seem to be able to isolate the induvidual values from one another with minimal strokes, it would be great to get some advice on that if you have a min?also tried focusing on line weight a bit more but i'll look more into that with the next update i think. thanks again.

tensai aye its a little bit frustrating to be honest with you, some days all it feels like i am doing is back peddling over old ground and losing anything that i have learnt, thanks for dropping in.

still life, about an hour and a half each

aye its a little bit frustrating to be honest with you, some days all it feels like i am doing is back peddling over old ground and losing anything that i have learnt...

don't sweat it man, really. you're doing some really cool work but don't focus on that too much. just focus on doing the drawings, keep on doing them keep on learning and enjoying just the act of drawing (of course you'll enjoy it a bit more when shit comes out right). milage matters so so much and if you just keep on drawing every day your 'hit' rate automatically goes up. (after which of course you'll adjust your expectations and will still be pumped to keep on improving).

still lives looking good mate. still agree that the blacks can be darker, but the insides and the reflected light shapes that you defined over there are bootiful. :confident

actually http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=233045&stc=1&d=1194265734
these look really great, solid form and good values.
As for line variation, I suggest using many types of pencils and getting a handle on each. IMO, a hb is always too light unless you plan on inking over the top. I use a 2b mech pencil for most sketching. I also use 4b and 6b wooden pencils( which are fantastic, use them sharp for rendering, and blunt for thumbnails or doodling)
Last update is really great man, but also think about the cast shadow on the ground.

i didn't see this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=145513&stc=1&d=1180448085) before but i think that is a seriously wicked illustration man. taken separately there are some really nice unexpected shapes in there that just work really well. as a serie the whole thing becomes even stronger. your drawing is very different but it still remindedme of the animation paprika by kon satoshi - which makes sense cause that movie is about dreams.

i know, three times in a row is maybe overstaying my welcome but just really dug that piece and it made my morning.

keep it coming man.

Hey Danny, thought I should check up on how you are doing mate. Hope work isn't grinding you down too much.

I haven't read any comments so I apologize if some things are repeated.
I like the fact you are very delicate when it comes to shading, I'm wondering though if you should darken those darks every so slightly more. Your sketches are just lacking that little bit of contrast I think.
The abstract shapes in some sketches are developing pretty well, you might be onto something there you know.
I also think doing some full figure gestures will help you out a lot.
Sorry if my info is somewhat scattered, I haven't typed properly in ages.
Keep cracking at it mate. Hard work is always worth it :)

Bendragon
February 23rd, 2008, 01:48 PM
Hey, really liking your pen and ink work. Youve got some good confident linequality there. I think you can make the pencil work more for you though. Sometimes the hard outlines youve got flattens the image. Be ruthless about shading cast shadows. Be more selective, which tones really do need to be drawn? I think addressing these problems will help you achieve a more three dimensional look to your drawings.
Oh, and your watercolour stuff is looking greeeeeeeeat! :)

Danny,

What can I say, you're an inspiration. It is great to see a fellow artist like yourself being so determined and devoted and to see the actual results.

After rambling into my sketchbook for several years and growing my love and determination to art I'm finally in a place where I am determined enough to work my ass off. Also in the recent months I'm finally starting to find the right materials to learn from and drawing is starting to make much more sense to me. I definitely got some good tips for new improved ways to learn from you and I got a lot more determination. Thanks for being an inspiration and keep up the great work!!!

The last one the colours are looking a little tired, which i know is a pain in the arse getting right using the method you have (colourize). I tihnk it needs some more intense or saturated spots of colour in contrast to the grey'ish palette. BOLDER

It has been a while since my last update, since that time i have applied, gone to an interview for, and been accepted by UWE uni. As anyone who has been paying attention to my rather emo title shall attest to, this is something that i have been waiting for for over a year since i got rejected from uni last year,

so a change of title and hopefully a change of pace once uni starts

i have a ton of traditional stuff i wish to scan in but it looks like i wont get the opportunity to now until uni starts in september, so here are some digi picture copys, alot of these are little more than sketchs but i'm just trying to get the feel for both colour and photoshop, i have included a step by step of how i am approaching these in the last image and would greatly appreciate your help in where and how you think i could improve.

Hey Danny, nice to see new stuff. Congratulations on getting accepted to the university. Remember to motivate your self and don't expect the UNI to motivate you if you know what I mean.

As for the digital sketches. Personally I haven't done much digi work but from what I can tell I'd suggest you to spend more time on each piece so you can get more detail in. Unless you are meaningly leaving them loose. I assume you are not using a color picker and if you aren't that's great cause it will train your eye to see the colors better.
All the pictures are very look alike and proportions looks right to me.

Good job and good to see you posting again!

struggling with me new scanner, its making me pencils look yucky.

aw that scan aint too bad ( havn't seen the original thought) Very solid contrast in the values, but the face is a little off. I think its to do with the bridge of her nose. How big are you doing these?

ive just noticed one thing id suggest you could work on- texturs and folds in fabric, in pencils more than others, but you tend to render them quite flat, and the texture is quite flat (good example is the guy standing at the top of this page)

i like the teddy bear t shirt too, but i think you need to be more selective and careful on your colour scheme including the t shirt background, i dont think the green was a particularly good choice!

Well done on your project mark though, was awesome!

oh yeah scan more work in that you did for that because i didnt see half of it

Smarty Aye your right, trying to get better on faces, these were done in me little A5 moleskin. How you feeling man?shame you missed last night.

Lefran Aye the colour choice was a moment of slight madness!cheers for pointing out about the fabrics, I had not noticed it before, shall have to do some clothe studies.

Just some face studies and stuff from my imagination, they are all mixed in together but I think its pretty obvious which are refed. Really trying to get a nice line in photoshop going ala bumskee. shall have to work on it.

very nice faces. The one, bottom left, looks like a young bruce willis. Generally the structure in these is very strong, you tend to lose it on the far edge in a couple though. You can see this most in the girls face.

the figures in a couple of posts up are gorgeous and the appl aint half bad either although the use of black is a little harsh and apparent. Myabe distracting?

A good start to the portraits too, although the rendering does seem a little parralel to planes, if you get what i mean. Not that thats always a bad thing, but here it lets the viewer interpret/dissect your pattern of drawing to easily. Sorry rambling a bit. The lighting in the marker one also looks as if you've left the picture unfinished, not as if those spots were meant to be like that.

hallo harries, you seem to love rendering your nose lol, im sure its not darker than the rest of your face lol i think the second one is most successful in terms of looking like you- maybe try one or 2 from a photo and really analyse your features and placing, a straight on one would always be useful, then im sure it would be easier to place and shape more accurately when looking from a mirror

Kyle hey man aye your spot on with both the marker portrait and the black in the digi painting, both are down to laziness. *sigh*

Not sure i'm completely certain what you mean with the shading, gonna have to get you to explain that one to me.

Franigan haha i KNOW its mainly down to it being such a bulbous little thing that it catchs the light in an interesting way and i just cant resist going to town on it....I am talking of my nose just in case that aint clear. Shall have to try the ones from a picture, tommorrows effort perhaps, ta for the wise words franwise.

So some more gestures and self portraits, i'm having some serious 'floating left' issues, need to train me eye some more.

I like the 3/4 view SP in your latest post. My only suggestion would be to spend more time than you thought you could bare on a single drawing. You will discover hidden details and develop more patience.
