Hmm i can't think how else to put it, the temple int the thrid portrait in post 244 is where it shows most. bleh it's not as important as the other things i said.

the latest batch are good, the straight on one is great. The placement of your nearest eye ( it usually the furthest eye for me) on 3/4 views is usually a little , on that last one is shows. The far eye is beautifully done though.

Excellent work mate. You're storming!

February 3rd, 2009, 08:41 PM
lefran I feel there is a creepy no eyebrowed fellow lurking deep within my soul that i captured quite well here...but FINE if you wish to ruin my fun i will add eyebrows:)

CamSyko Hey cheers man for stopping by, indeed your spot on about spending more time on these, I feel I should explain what it is I am doing, I have a brief for my course to do 30 sp in 2 weeks, my master plan is to rush through 30 crappy quick ones in the first week just so I know I have them and then to spend my time in the second week on really long poses so i can focus on all the things you pointed out, cheers for stopping in

Smarty hey poo face, please stay out of my sketchbook. :)

Kian Ah cheers brother, thanks a ton for stopping in.

So same drill as before gestures and sp's.

Smarty
February 4th, 2009, 03:22 AM
That last one is your strongest, strong sense of lighting. You've managed to let the face for the most part get lost i nshadow but because your placing is spot on it works really well.

BTW looking at your posemaniaks stuff, you approach the figure completely differently to me!

DannySketch
February 4th, 2009, 08:30 AM
kyle, aye I took a little more time with that one, really tried to focus on placement, the ones in this update are more quickys and i notice more floaty right horrors, gonna try and do one or two more this afternoon in pencil to really get some symetry down.

Kyle you have the nose of an otter.

So I am trying my best to update this thread more with my studies by the fine example set by the smarties loving mofo above.

Holy shitster Danny! You have come so far. Such great studies and excellent improvement. No crits just keep at it!

Love those sketchbook pages and self portraits!. What makes self portraits very hard is because you keep moving constantly as you draw. Doing portraits of someone else is much easier for this reason. Just a heads up.

Jacky-Boy Thanks man!

flamable Cheers for stopping in, aye these are all for a fairytale re-design book project for uni, and I am 21, your making me feel very old!:)

wookiedabo Ha thanks mate, I do love that man, and am very guilty of allowing him to influence me work.

lefran Merci McFran, aye, I am gonna play around with it in photoshop, see if I can make it a little bit better.

Smarty
March 20th, 2009, 08:04 PM
really like the first two, they have a nice flow. Not sure about the composition in the Beauty adn the beast on in retrospect. Specifically the use of dark and light sections should have maybe been swapped for stronger shapes. I dont know, The slice seems a little artificial. I dont mind the smudgy area tbh though.

Also maybe referance materials, specifically the old womans shirt. It looks like a cool circuit board. Something to think about. A suggestion would be some horrible william morris esque print. These things build up to assosiations remember.

Kyle Indeed I recognise all your crits, but its just down to a time thing now mate, this image for instance i am not happy with at all, but whatcha gonna do? We only got a week left.

Hey man whatsup! I really enjoy your lines man, i think you need to think of them as marks and value more though.. but i'm not sure of your intentions with these last ones anyway.. try to finish em up , the rendering looks pretty tight too! I really like this one http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=608653&stc=1&d=1236070927 and http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=623532&stc=1&d=1237483878 ! Try to be as confident with your marks on the wacom as you are with the pencil :) its very similar if you're not focusing on the medium to much :p anyyyways.. keep it up man :)

That old lady up there really rocks.

PieMonster
March 23rd, 2009, 06:44 PM
Cool shit man, lines are looking good. Be careful not to overdo the lines though, in some of the pieces it's sort of flattening them.
On that last piece, the big thing below the pig is nicely rendered, but the bottom part of it is way to light to make it read as round, it flattens the whole thing. If the white part is supposed to be reflected light, you have to make it darker, or at least reduce the amount of white. The way it is now makes it read as a big fat white outline, and this flattens the whole thing.
Really liking how you did the rest of the piece though.

Keep it up dude! :)

March 25th, 2009, 07:36 AM
haha i like the pig in suspenders harries, send me some of your printscreens as you go im interested to see what your gonna do

Smarty
March 25th, 2009, 08:31 AM
th giant is beutifully done, like the details in the vest and such. His waistband has been half rubbed out though, which is a quick fix. The trees in the foreground seem a lot more textural than the rest of your Mucha esque images with clean line work which makes them kinda jump

With the beastiality image, again nice clean lines but the cloth in her hand isn't convingsice, needs to be more subtle. with heavy directional line work like that it suggests heavy fabric with few folds. But the ammount of fold you've given it would make me think the opposite.

anyway all done and said i know the time constriants on these so I know oyur not looking fot nit picks like this lol. good job.

man that frog one relaly has a nice snese of colour and works well with the line work. It would have been nice to assign the others a strong key like the frog.

PieMonster
March 28th, 2009, 11:21 AM
Cool stuff lately. The frog is looking good, really liking the colours, you might want to put some more red or purple in there for complementary colours. The leftmost leg seems to be too saturated, you should bring the values down and make a cast shadow from the leg in front of it. Also remember to not use black and white for highlights and shadows, like it seems you did in the giant piece. Instead of making the shadows desaturated like that, use a darker saturated blue to make it look like reflected light from the sky.

PieMonster cheers mate, awesome crit, i have recently found out we now have another month for these so I'll def revisit them with what you said in mind.

Smarty
April 2nd, 2009, 06:38 PM
lovely face studies, not sure aboutthe painting though. it's hard to tell where the lighting is. You have your planes mapped out pretty good well. I would just make the lighting more intentional for now.

wookiedabo
April 3rd, 2009, 07:35 AM

DannySketch
April 9th, 2009, 04:59 PM
So this is the first ever real attempt I have given to doing a full blown colour face from imagination, that is really quite stupid when I think about it.
Its messy, muddy and a little bit yucky, but its a start.

PieMonster
April 9th, 2009, 05:12 PM
Cool work recently man, really liking all those colour studies you've been doing. You can probably push the value and saturation on some of them though. Keep it up! (:

DannySketch
April 10th, 2009, 07:16 AM

This mornings session, colour is reffed, B&W is not. 2 hours each, aye I know, i am slow.

crashMMVII
April 10th, 2009, 08:26 AM
Your heads / portraits are awesome.

I'd say your environments are probably your weakest element right now, but you seem aware of that and you're practicing them so much that I can already see an improvement on this page alone (errr...previous page).

Keep 'em coming!

NateShaw
April 10th, 2009, 08:35 AM

crashMMVII Thanks for the comments and encouragement mate, desperately trying to push through the hideous enviroments at the moment!argh!

NateShaw Cheers!

Ok so the first is just under two hours and the second is just under three, both reffed, not sure if I should be trying to speed these up or slow them down, I shall try both tomorrow!:)

And then a wip digi from me brain, trying to use scarier colours!About 2 and a half hours in.

Sleep time.

DannySketch
April 11th, 2009, 05:26 AM
Not a very good morning session at all :(

first an hour of 6 quicker 10 min studies from ref, then a longer hour long one, then an imagination piece that was supposed to be 2 hours long, but I struggled. gotta work harder.

The first 10 min one looks like play dough :(

DannySketch
April 11th, 2009, 11:56 AM
so I felt very guilty about my lazy enviroment attempt this morning and decided to spend some more time on them, so I did these thumbnails, 10 mins each and then painted up the last one for just under 2 hours.

Really gotta do a lot more of these.

Toffeeliz
April 11th, 2009, 04:10 PM
Good work for 10 minutes each! :D
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=643312&stc=1&d=1239402914 really striking colours, will you finish this do you reckon?

DannySketch
April 11th, 2009, 04:57 PM
Toffeeliz Thanks for stopping in, probably not no, but I did give it a few more hours tonight,

so here, I got slightly lost and never really managed to get a handle on those feather type things, but it was fun nonetheless.:)

DannySketch
April 12th, 2009, 04:41 PM
Ok, so first off 6 10 min quick ref studies to get warmed up.

Then a 50 min ref enviroment study.

Next a B&W imagination enviroment thing, cant remember how long I spent on it, I think anywhere between 1 hour or two.

A shoe from life, I had to call this one quits at 2 and a half hours just cause I was running out of time, need to do more of these and speed up in placing form and colour.

A quick 50 min study of a face, and then some lips which were 15 mins each (rather amazing how much pornography one finds when one googles 'lips')

And then a crappy half hour or so doodle which has told me I seriously need to work on my skin tones.

Smarty
April 12th, 2009, 04:50 PM
man your killing it. Your colours seem to be getting alot easier on the eye. The 10 minute ones are showing this. Things are starting to look blotchy on the ones your spent more time on though. Watch your stroke economy, the means using a bigger brush alot more often than you think. It shows up particuarly on the toe area of the converse if you can't see what I'm saying.

armando
April 12th, 2009, 07:45 PM
Self portraits are a good way to study skin tones, the only draw back is that it's always the same race and gender. There's all these little shifts in saturation, value, warmer and cooler. Go back and forth between self portraits and photos.
I think it would be helpful on these short environment studies to concentrate on only a few things at a time: only lines and shapes and proportion, only values and proportion, only colors and proportion.
Consider the image as a flat rectangle and cut out smaller shapes on that rectangle using lines. Then with that out of the way more of your mind is freed up to compare colors. You could also just trace over the general proportions first, that way the shapes are as close as possible in the shortest amount of time, again freeing you up to concentrate on the colors.
Somber mysterious colors are always desaturated colors posing as other colors: reds can look like blue or purple, orange can look green. Use the eye dropper at the end of a color study to compare choices with actuality. It's probably possible to make any color look like any other color.

armando Long time no see dude, thanks for dropping in, your words of wisdom are always welcome, thanks for the crit.

Toffeeliz Ha, thanks! :)

Gah CA is being well moody at the mo. Took me forever to load these up.

Had a horrible day today, nothing seemed to go right.

First 10 min warm ups

Spent a couple of hours on one of them

645668

words cannot quite desrcibe how much I hate the image below, i hate how all my imagination faces are both muddy and cartoony, gotta work on this.

645671

And thats all, no updates for a while. I am off to the coast of this wonderful little island tomorrow for four days armed with naught but a few sketchbooks and a pencil. Hopefully lots of scans shall be produced.

Smarty
April 13th, 2009, 05:38 PM
the BW and the castle one look great. Your choices of brushes are seeming a tad random sometimes though, perhaps decide which brushes to use in your picture before you start seeming as these are just copies of photos.

The most succesful skin study is the centre one. The others look a little muddy due to using greeny browns with yellow i tihnk.

DannySketch
April 18th, 2009, 04:35 AM
Cheers man. colours are destroying me at the mo.

So I am back, didnt manage to get that much done, mostly scribbles that aint worth scanning in, heres a couple of pages of some faces and shizzle from imagination, gotta get better.

Smarty
April 18th, 2009, 05:42 AM
nice to be back? anyway I've been doing sooom loomis and I've just realised, you heads are SOOOOOOOOO loomis. Which aint a bad thing. I wanna see that painting!

DannySketch
April 18th, 2009, 02:41 PM
ha really? I've never actually studied Loomis's heads so thats a bit weird. And its not a painting its a drawing and shh!I dont know whose watching.

Spent most of the day working on some crappy pencil gesture studies that I cannot be bothered to scan (there are many pages, all poo) but I squeezed these two in towards the end of the day,

one studie
649922

and one crappy doodle, I need to start giving these a bit more love.
649925

Tomorrow= enviroments + imagination/design x lighting/still life + everything!:)

Virg
April 18th, 2009, 04:12 PM
good stuff man, keep refining your brushwork and those digis will be kick ass. I think you should use the pen pressure with the opacity setting a bit more often with your brushes, your edges are pretty hard where they should be soft in many of your paintings. Love the pencil sketches they got great linework.

DannySketch
April 19th, 2009, 04:52 AM
Shantih What can I say missy, I am a lazy mofo. And as I have already made quite clear to Kyle it is a drawing and not a painting and SHH!! people are watching!!!

hey man, i see what whiteC is saying, your brushes don't have a ver long lead of with the pocaity making the transitions a bit forced with more stokresthan you need if it were a bit more sensitive.

Are those head after I spotted the feature thing by any chance, some of them are really strong and not cartoony!

I was planning on doing a page like this, you beat me too it ha.

The self portrait looks pretty accurate if memory serves correctly. I like the eye on the right, all the flat shapes sticking together like pieces of a puzzle. I don't like the cheek on the left so much because the values are jumping around a lot, nothing's sticking together, everything is blending in and out of the thing next to it. Only thing I can say is that it's worth taking your time on those, because the solutions you find can be used in your imagination stuff.

even though you say you're poo at them the characters do have a certain amount of natural life about them, rather than the forced energy you get from most peoples poses, the only thing I'd say is don't always have them looking at the viewer, the eyes distract from the rest of the design. i dont get why u keep colour picking to see how close u are to ref, it shouldnt matter , afaik the important thing is to keep the relationship between the colour temperatures the same. if ur keepn the warms and cools in the right places then matching the precise hues doesnt really matter. if your trying to get better at mixing colours then grab some oils and just do loads of colour mixing...theres a post by jason manley or someone like that in the techniques section about it.... its a bit boring but the amount u learn is phenomenal (allegedly.....ive never done it but its on my to do list)

this is sick, but the composition doesnt appear to have a focal point and this is compounded by an even spread of darks and lights. try to simplify the light...its tempting to show off , but it doesnt do a lot for readability.

bottom right and top left badgers are so cute i just want to take them home!!! well done

some of ur imagination (and even ur ref stuff) comes out looking a bit plasticine like in terms of colours, your not taking into account the harmonizing affect of ambient light, how light source temperature affects shadows etc. like with these

last study is really nice- chloe will love it- is has boobs

i think with your female figures from imagination, it doesnt look as if your trying to draw the chunkier set girl, but i think its because your drawing the torso too wide, like the rib cage too wide esp on the punk pirate girl, and on the bird girl perhaps the boobs are slightly too low?, which then means youve drawn the hips quite wide, and the head looks a bit small in proportion then. Theyre looking good as character studies, but i think theres just the odd bit that makes them look a bit off, not with the guys those are looking great, just with female figures, some of these issues seem a bit present in the quick figure sketches too. When its reffed, you hit the marks much better i think, for some reason you draw the naked porn girls much better lol, i think just try and apply that a bit more. Not saying every girl you draw is like young hot skinny, just certain bits are a bit out

DRAW KATE WITH SPOCK

edit: i take it back she does not approve of tan line boobs, i concurr, they are not good with tan lines. I wasnt sure of how high her boob standards are. now i know.

Bushido Aye mate I am running scared of clours from me head at the moment and I need to face up to it.

lol, although you may still say my legs are still to short, your legs are looking a little too long to me. I tihnk it's kinda an issue of where the eyelines lies though. Alot of your figures seem to look like we are chrouched on the floor looking up. Takea closer look at those fasion shoot style full poses (like on that hel looks or whatever) With photos taken like that they look natural because the camera is eye level. With this in mind the bottom of th foot to the waist line is the same as the waistline to the top of the head most of the time. I don't know if its on prupose but your images have a skew in perspective, perspective from the bottom, which isn't that natural.

Also feet! your hands are miles better than your feet, or placement of. Get a load of feet and just draw how they sit and support on the ground.

Gah! So much work! So productive!

I would agree with what smarty says really, i think perhaps the solution to some of the things raised like with head size though, the heads are ever slightly on the small side, which creates that "crouched on the floor looking up." and makes the limbs seem longer

You say your scared of colour in an earlier post and i look at the beautiful colour studies in post #425 and i'm thinking...why?

Nice character sketches. I'm amazed you can do them so clearly with so few lines. Personally I would have to build them up in layers like the violinist one, but I guess all your anatomy studies are paying off! Not much to crit, perhaps the heads are a little small, and it seems as though you have the tendency to draw them leaning to the left a bit. Otherwise great stuff!

Smarty Cheers for the crits dude, always helpful

Pic ha, colour is still a beast to me, specially from my imagination, its a killer, thanks for your comment. both of them :)

Meon Cheers dude.

Finn Diesel cheers for the crits man, and aye, the character sketches are in fact sketched out before hand, if I kept all the layers on they would all end up looking a lot more like the violin guy.

BlackGuy Cheers mate.

Just a small update, I should prob be spending more time on this, and I got lost in layers and textures, but I learned a fair bit.

last digi is killer, really kinda weird graphic style sitting between vector and ps painting, just thrown off by ambiguous lightsources (plus a mysterious one emanating from gorillas chest). given the strong light in the background it would look really good if he was backlit, making him much darker, almost a silhouette with rim lighting. but the strongest part of the drawing by far is the monkeys bum and the leg coming down from it. there is a clear light source on the left so the shadow looks good, and theres some nice subtle variations in hue. and if the rest of the drawing was done to that standard it would be siiiiiiick but right now its just cool and a bit strange (like you)
much luv bruv XXXX

the woman's face could do with more contrast but those last two studies are gorgeous. Really seeing some lights turn on with that stuff. Specular placement and contrast is getting better.

Hey. Nice to see some new stuff. I like this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=781683&stc=1&d=1253317984) a lot, and I think this sketch (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=776511&stc=1&d=1252786792) has great potential. Would love to see a version painted up, although perhaps the head is just a teeny bit small? I don't know. Looks great though. Second year going alright?
