Wow. The detail in this is phenomenal.
My only crit would be that the farther eye socket looks larger than the nearer one - which may just be an effect of the lighting. Other than that, the modeling of the form is lovely. Hope this one's going in your portfolio!

Appreciate the responses, thanks.
I used Raw Umber and Flake White both grumbacher. Thier RU has less chroma than many and that's what I wanted.
Gryphon: good eye,(pun intended) I'm impressed that you noticed. I didn't want to repaint... just left it as is. Ready to move on I guess.
Manley: Do you guys still have oil paints laying around over there in the land where all is digital?? :rendered:
Cheers,

GREAT job man
I read about using raw umber and white in Harold Speed's Oilpainting and drawing books for cast painting. Your's is a great example of that.

Awesome painting. I have a question though. Trying to do monochromatic paintings in the past I've run into a problem with the lights appearing "chalky" I'm not sure how else to desribe it, but when it happens it looks like ass. Your painting has none of that. I was wondering if you did something to specifically avoid that, or was ever even a problem? Just improperly judged values on my part, or something else?

Again, I do appreciate the responses everyone.
Infinit: It was good having you along for the trip.
Cthogua: To be honest this is only my 3rd painting so I'm not sure what you're encountering. Doug mentioned that it was probably a value problem; trying to visually match what you think you're seeing and blowing way out of the actual value range you should be in.
Don't know if you can relate to that or not???
I wanted to correct something from earlier, I used Titamium white not Flake.

Sorry to sound so newbish, but what is a cast painting?
Every time someone says "cast painting" in a thread title, it's always something great and realistic like this.
I still don't know the connection though.

A Cast is a model made out of Plaster (usually), A replica of something else. They are usually really white, good for doing values, and usually take up to weeks/months to complete.

Wow, really great detail! The texture! Damn... I can't do a thing with real paint. Not a thing. I'm so jealous. Gotta practice.
