Double your money! Buy a painting and help support the next generation of science fiction and fantasy artists.
MICROVISIONS:
These paintings were created as a special fund raiser for Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Fund. All proceeds will go to a scholarship to be awarded a student creating an exceptional work with a speculative or fantastic theme.
All artworks are original and measure 5x7. The paintings are small so the minimum bid will be easy on the pocket -- bids will start at just $50.00!
The auction will run on eBay from April 8th to April 15th, 12:00 noon.

pixel,
the scholarship is to be awarded to an individual who makes it into the society of illsutrators student scholarship competition
to make it into that show you need to be a student of a 4 year accredited college.
most art schools in the US submit to it.
it is incredibly competitive, and the largest of its kind.
once you are in, there are 10's of thousands of dollars awarded to students.
this will be just one scholarship of many.
i believe there was a thread about the competition a while back if you need more info.

A little info of the Society's Scholarship:
The history of the Student Scholarship is an impressive one. Since its inception, the it has bestowed over one million dollars to the award winners and their respective schools. The Society's Education Committee reviews approximately 5000 entries every year from over 300 colleges. From those entries, the jurors, comprised of illustrators and art directors, select an exhibition of just over 100 images. From this selection the jury reconvenes to review the original paintings and honor select pieces with cash awards. Illustrators who have won awards, or exhibited in, this exhibition have gone on to become among the field's brightest stars - John Jude Palencar, Patrick Arrasmith, Peter deSevé, Daniel Dos Santos, Greg Spalenka, Adam Rex, Terese Nielsen, James Jean, Tomar Hanuka, Jeff Soto, to name just a few.

Pix - as far as i know, the scholarship is skill based, not need based.
The student work in this years annual is even better than in the last one. most work cand hold their own with the pros.

Pix - as far as i know, the scholarship is skill based, not need based.
Commy speaks the truth. Individual works are judged. There is no application process beyond that. In fact, it is important that the jury not know the artist, school, or professor associated with the piece.
The word "scholarship" may be a little misleading. All the funds raised throughout the year are broken down to a number of 5, 4, 3, and many 1 thousand dollar prizes. Plus the work is printed in both a student catalog and in the Society's annual.
As a nice aside, the Spectrum editors were super kind this year and sponsored an award. And last year's Art Out Loud raised a lot of money for the awards this year as well.

Full disclosure: I volunteer my time there as a board member, so I am obviously biased. That said...
It's true that anyone living out of driving distance doesn't get as much out of their membership as those that can visit the place frequently, but, I fully believe it's worth joining to support illustration and to be part of it's history. I've been to the "New Members" dinner a bunch of times and each year I get choked up when the director does his History of the Society slide show.
As a member you will also get discounts on entry fees, the annual, and such. Still, it is a drag of you can't come in a see the shows and utilize the sketch sessions as such. You may want to PM Dan or Elwell to get their take on it.
If you do decide to join, tell them that either Dan or Tristan Elwell is sponsoring you. (Fight it out, boys!) It means that they and you will get a discount of some sort....if that membership drive is still running. I think it runs until June but I'm not 100% sure.

you are also eligible for a "young professionals" discount.
so yearly dues will only be 50% until you are 32.

and the society has a TON over-seas members.
but honestly, im not quite certain why.
you might be better off asking an international member.

On a mildly off-topic note, what was your method for doing the "microvisions" type for the show? It looks like printed and then cut paper, but I'm not sure how you raised it off the wall... I'm just curious. :)It was all very high tech. I printed the logo onto cover stock paper and Dan cut them out....by hand. He's insane, they look machine cut. Then we taped the "visions" onto the backs of silver pushpins. You can only see the pushpins if your looking at an extrem angle, and because they are silver, they just look like silver rods. Smoke and mirrors.
The auction was about 5x more sucessful than I had hoped it would be! (Dan is more optimistic than I and knew all along it would go this well.:teeth: ) I noticed some CAers on the bids. Thank you, thank you. It will go to create one of the largest awards for next year's scholarships.

considering i've never seen a vallejo go for less than 10k,
i figured this little one would be a great opportunity for a LOT of collectors.
that goes for most of these artists.
like irene said,

Sadly, John has not been in good health for quite some time. If anyone is serious about wanting to buy a piece from him, they should contact Jane Frank at Wolrds of Wonder. She has been handling John's paintings for the past bunch of years. She has tons of color sketches as well as final paintings.
John came to NY about two years ago for his induction into the Illustrators Hall of Fame. It was a pleasure to meet him. He is, hands down, one of the best artists that the field has seen.
