Hey guys,

So, it's been a really long time as usual since I have put anything up here. Figured I should toss a few things up. A little while ago I landed a gig to do some t-shirt illustrations for SLAYER. It doesn't get much more metal than that! I've gotten a little bit of feedback from the band but am still awaiting their final decision. Here are the three designs I gave them. Two of which I did two versions of. Hope you like 'em.

Salute!

holy shit that's an awesome job - Slayer is the only metal band from yesteryear that doesn't suck it big now.

These are badass, but my favorite is the second down on the left. reminds me a bit of another "metal" artist, Pushead....but maybe that's just the imagery.

sorry for not knowing slayer, but your artwork is just great!

my personal fav is the first one.
great pieces for a great band.

edit: ohhhhhh, didn't think. on a t-shirt the third one would fit better, but as a cd cover the first one would be perfect.

last one, second version. no doubt.

second row right -- looks like a badass demonic shuriken or double-pronged hand weapon. surfaces maybe a little too polished, but the forms really pop.

The hesher in me loves these. They're so fucking metal.

couple minor, minor crits,

the flat red letters don't seem to integrate in the first 3 compared to the rendered stuff. i like the heavier outlines and varied values in second helmet logo better than the others.
for such an aggro graphic, sharp corners and maybe varied or thicker line weights on the letter outlines might work better than the thin lines with rounded corners... just a thought.
the helmets seem a little too bowl-like and close fitting to me as well, but that's probably just a personal taste thing.

Really love the images though,

Design wise I like the first one best, but as a t-shirt specifically the bottom right would be my pick. Bearing in mind that it's gonna' fade a bit over time and washings so starting out with the higher contrast might be a good idea.

By the way, I think you've said before that you don't do digital. Could you describe your process for work like this or the materials used? Or is it a secret?

Awesome pentagram at the top. I really like it the most 'cause I'm a big fan of symmetry. Nice work!

I think in the 2nd and 3rd, the revised (assuming the ones on the right are revised?) would work much better for t-shirts, so much punch! Were I to buy one, it'd be the first.

South of Heaven muthafuckas... I would proudly wear that last piece with the upside cross on the helmet, it's too damn cool. Every one of those designs rock...

N8 amazing jobs as always. Your style is shining right there. All of them look very "Slayer". They should produce all of them.

hell yes!! most slayer shirts i saw looked so cheap but i'd buy these in a second! particulary the second and third (second version of each one).
if they don't take them please produce the second one on your own without the slayer logo :).

oh man, I remember collecting the Iron Maiden "Eddie" art in jr. high. Metal has a great tradition of fantasy illustration behind it. These are extremely cool. I hope they have you do a whole series of work for them.

I love the bottom right image. Totally cool t-shirt design. Be sure to let us know which one is chosen.

When I was 15-16 I went over to their house for a party...they used to live in Pacific Grove, Kali. They wanted to be close to the Catylist that's in Santa Cruz.
They had the entire kitchen floor covered with 6 pack cartons with the empty bottles gathering dust. I think they were mainly concerned with partying and buying all leather outfits.
Great stuff...love the skulls in helmets w/dog tags.

Slither Astray
March 24th, 2006, 09:38 AM
it all looks awesome but the right one from the middle one you posted.. with the 2 shiny skulls.. well.. love it! The shape of those skulls looks really weird and cool and the shinyness makes it even more spectaculair.
Rock on!

Aweome job! So glad I saw this - I'm doing some stuff for another big old metal band. Though it's in a completely different area and they aren't letting me do anything nearly this creative :P Great work. Love the red drips in the backgrounds. I'd buy the bottom right one.

This is awesome. I've always remembered seeing 'band' shirts and thought the illustrations were badass. At present day, it's fucking cool to see someone on the boards DOING the art... and keeping the 'badass' art alive. Fucking killer. I liked the last set the best.

Awesome designs.
I like the last one, but I think theres no way they'll pick it. Too much like SOD. I've got a tee in a bottom drawer from about 15 years ago that looks alot like it. Your art is much better, just a similar concept.

not bad my boy. especially for someone who's so into jazz fusion and christian rock such as yourself. i really admire how you can put aside your christian values and tackle such taboo subject matter like this. you know, i was saying a prayer for you last night (like i do EVERY night before i go to bed) and as i recited christs rhetoric i was thinking about how special you really are, and how much more pure my soul is for knowing you as well as i do. ill be your howdy doodie any day, just stick your hand up my ass, and ill totally sit on your lap and drink a glass of water while you sing of christs glory. good work dude. im glad you finally posted theez.-c36

Marko Djurdjevic: They say you never forget your first. I'm glad it was you. Heh heh, thanks a lot, man. I give you all the M&M's you desire.

steak-tron: Thanks, man. Couldn't have said it better myself!

loomer: Yeah, I'd have to agree with you in all ways. it's hard not to be somewhat influenced by Pushead. That guy sets the standard.

Arne S.: Thanks a lot. Yeah, Slayer is like the Ty Cobb (baseball) of metal. Old school and hard ass.

Carnifex: Yeah, the first is my fave also. I think you are right about the album cover. It has a nice square look to it.

Eriboss: Heh heh, a man who appreciates his roots. I like that. Thanks. It's good to be on the boards again.

GreenThumbArt: Thanks a lot.

DSillustration: Thanks for the post. I dig your stuff. Oddly enough the last one is the one they liked the least. Go figure.

Matt Dixon: Thanks a lot. Your another one of those guys who's stuff I dig. Thanks for the reply. Yeah, you're on top of things knowing about the book and all. In my next post I gotta drop that bomb.

tensai: Thanks. I love to hear what people pick as their favorite.

masque: Yeah, I'd agree with you. It's a bit glossy. Thats why I did the other version because they wanted one with a little more funk to it.

Nigel Q: Thanks. I think a lot of your crits are actually really spot on. A lot of the stuff I actually think about that bug me as well.

Summer Pudding: Heh heh, glad I did them justice from a true listeners perspective. I myself am a big Hell Awaits fan.

Lord Blue: Awesome. Good to hear. Thanks.

Lone Wolf: Thanks, man. Yeah, I don't mess with cg musc. A little bit for these. I put the stroke around them and composited them on the bloody backgrounds. That's actually a lot of computer compared to my usual.

Xpose: Thanks. Yeah, I love to be able to say I did anything for them.

Gilead: Interesting. Never thought about it like that. Getting washed and faded and all. Interesting thing to keep in mind. Yeah, not much cg in this. I mentioned that a couple back. All the art is really done by hand. A lond drawn out process that would take a good while to break down.

Sinix: Thanks, I was pretty proud of the upsidedown cross. I wanted it to look like someone did it in blood with their finger.

bwkeough: Heh heh, I'm happy to help bring you to the dark side! Thanks.

Scrawl: Thanks. Yeah, sadly that was their least favorite.

magicgoo: Thanks. Yeah, I think I just about pissed my pants myself when I got the gig.

Mirana: Thanks. Glad you have a hard time picking a fave. That's a good sign.

DavePalumbo: Yeah, oddly the ones on the right were the originals. I don't know why I put them that way. They wanted to see different versions of 'em. Yeah, the first one is the one in my book!

strych9ine: Great, man. Thanks for all the votes of confidence.

Android: I think you are one of the main reasons I posted this. I teased you about it for too long. I'm sure you would have outshined me if you got this gig. You make me try harder.

dibumac: Thanks. Yeah, it has a nice punch/impact to it.

oDaYWaLKeRo: Thanks! Yeah, this was an easy gig to work on. Didn't have to twist my arm to do it.

janni: Thanks. Yeah, seriously, I'd print that one up myself!

Geophillyx: Thanks a lot. Glad they stand on the art alone. This is the biggest band I've worked for. I've done a lot of smaller stuff. BUT, I did just finish some work for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'll post it soon.

VirusArtist: I'd be happy to have your sweaty armpits in my shirt!

lyon: Yeah, I think Iron Maiden art changed my world as a kid. I will deff keep all y'all posted on the outcome. Thanks.

Infinit: Thanks a lot. A paying customer!

Fisch: Thanks a lot. Glad you appreciate them. A TRUE metal head! Thanks for posting, I dig your work.

IILooney: Yeah they fucking do!

theincredibleandy: Yeah, similar colors. Can't go wrong with J.C. Thanks!

viag: Thanks. Yeah, I love to render.

vogemudet: Thats a great story! That is beond words. Going to their place as a kid for a party!

Slither Astray: Great, thanks a lot. Yeah, I wanted to make a crazy "s" with the skulls.

Pencilator: Thanks a lot. Another paying customer! Yeah, that one has a Pantera feel to it for me. Not sure why.

nonie: Thanks a lot. Creative freedom is a powerful thing!

sve: Thanks a lot. Good to hear.

TheGnoll:Thnaks. Glad you are feelin' em.

Sarcophagus: Yeah, it was a bit surreal. It doesn't get much better than that.

Bomba: Thanks a lot! Yeah, they have a standard. It's great to be a part of it.

dropkick99: Yeah, I think that may be one of the reasons they didn't feel that one. It's not the most orinal concept. A fun one to do, though.

Ramzeal: Yeah, they've been slaying for over 20 years! Nutts. Still kicking.

JoeHell : Thanks. Love it!

sweet swett el coro: You make the jam between my toes wet. I get that ass sweat everytime I see something posted by you. Believe me, I had to do a LOT of hail mary's after doing this. My soul has been darkened like a smoker's lungs. I owed it to you to post these. I told you about it too fuckin' long ago. I tease because I love.

No Shit!! I used to live in Santa Cruz! I went with my parents to see Stevie Ray Vaughn at the Catalyst when I was about 11 or 12. Too bad I wasn't into Slayer then. If I'd only known then what I know now.
