View Full Version : Hey, Concept Art .org Girls!
magicgoo
March 21st, 2006, 03:57 AM
I just started an all-girl challenge for conceptart.org female only members in the Thunderdome area:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64285
(Sorry, if this is not OK to post this here, admins, but I really wanted to generate some interest in this contest.)
Thought it would be really fun to have an all girl art contest since I don't think it's been done here before and we have some awesome female artists here!

you can in the new profiles, though it's not going to be 100% acurate being that many people probably haven't filled out their info. My search returned 183 members, I'm sure there are many more than that

I'm not a woman, so I won't say what the females here should spend their time drawing, but I totally second that idea. Girlie art drawn by women is usually so much better than that drawn by guys. Guys usually end up focusing on their own particular fetishes and fixations, while women tend to draw more holistic character studies. Most male artists can draw a beautiful pair of legs, or beautiful eyes, or some particular set of features really well, but few male artists can draw a beautiful woman as well as a female artist can (and to those male artists who fall in this category, I salute you).
Anybody else want to start up a "girls drawn by girls" thread now?

I think what he meant to say was that women don't get stuck in the "DD Titty Vixens with Panty Armor"™ mindset as easily when they draw female characters, which results in a more realistic depiction.

Or perhaps women draw women more the way you like to see them, whatever your ideal is may be closer to the average woman's ideal than the average man's. we're really arguing over a matter of opinion here, but for myself I also disagree. The few female artists I know of who even do that sort of artwork, I see nothing that elevates them above their male peers, some of it even feels too cold to me. True, some male artists fixate on a particular anatomical area (Frazetta and the butt for example) but this is definitely not the case for everyone. It's also not always a bad thing, though I know what you mean when it gets out of hand. Besides, as said above, a competent artist should be able to draw or paint all features with skill. Artists who can only do the areas they're fixated on (which reads as "amateur" to me) should not be considered in the argument. I don't know if I could paint a handsomer dude than an equally skilled female, though I give her the edge for at least having a sexual attraction to the subject. You know? How can that possibly be a detriment?

Nothing like a sweeping generalization to make you look like a total idiot...
Guys usually end up focusing on their own particular fetishes and fixations,
Ironic, because It seems like your particular fetish is that you are aroused by the idea of women drawing hot women.

AAAHAHA nearly fell out of my chair on that one!
Besides the sex war, I think beauty is a whole other topic. We had a few threads on the subject already...
That mentionned (and to get back to boobies), the majority here consists of hetero males that are not *yet* excelling in anatomy. We're just seeing the result of chosen subject which lacks practice of a complex anatomic structure (musculature + fat construction) that is the female breast. And I'm sure it's not for lack of reference but perhaps lack of understanding what's going on tridimentionally. It's hard enough distancing yourself from the subject when you study anatomy (imagine being in front of a cadaver), but I'm sure it must be even more difficult for a lot of guys to do the same in front of a playboy bunny centerfold set of pictures.
The silicone and photoretouch aren't helping matters either.
sorry I need english classes :(

Heeeeey. Can we please have a HOT MAN PIN-UP CALENDAR?? I can appreciate a hot woman as well as anyone else, but we aren't lacking for boobies on conceptart. We are definately lacking in the depiction of fine looking men.
Men-drawing-women/women-drawing-women: I believe we draw genders as we would like to see them. Some men end up drawing big-tittied, bikini-armor girls and huge, muscled guys. Some women draw skinny, feminine looking boys and petite little girls. I also think in the beginning, most of us have issues drawing the opposite sex because we aren't used to seeing it as often. This changes. It's not the norm.
At least, I'd like to hope it's not 'cause I'm tired of seeing wandering nipples/boobs and androgious boys.

no, it doesnt.
however, in MEP's defense...
some of my favorite photographers & writers that deal with erotica ARE women.
(anais nin, for example)
there is no difference in skill, obviously,
but i do think there is a difference in sentiment.
women know what is sexy about women in a much more intimate manner.
its a bit more cerebral, imo.
not always the case,
but enough of the time to be worthy of note.

This reminds me WAY back of that "gay art and gay artists" thread.
It kind of strikes me as odd alot alot of people (be it a gender, race, religious group, political group) will say they want to be treated like everyone else and that they can do something just as good as anyone else, but then they go out of thier way to segregate themselves like this.
I'm not saying any of you girls are like that, it seems like a very fun competition, but this is just something I've been thinking about for a while.
A girls only thread is okay, but it's funny to think of how people would react if someone made a males only thread. My city has a filipino basketball league, and everyone is fine with that, but if someone were to dare start a caucasian only basketball league, people would start all kinds of protests.
And saying "girls can draw pretty things better than men" is exactly like saying "women can use power tools like men". The door swings both ways, hope this did'nt offend anybody.
Anyways, have fun, y'all :)
waronmars
March 21st, 2006, 06:41 PM
Marko: Muahahah!
Interceptor: As if this is segregation dude, if anything, we're going for MORE equality by encouraging female members in this hugely male dominated forum. Most threads around here are males only, by virtue of the sheer number difference...we're just evening it out a little.
Any gender being able to draw anything better than the other is bullshit, and you all know it. Guys like drawing big tits cause, face it, they're MEN. That doesnt mean any less skill.

Well, when 90% of the thunderdomes are male only by default, it's not much fun to make it male only isn't it? The idea is not to exclude guys but to include girls.
I have an anecdote about this and Egerie might concur as she was there too: We had a female only IGDA meeting in Montreal this winter and while many guys grumbled about it, it was a great success, many women from the game industry were there, many many of which NEVER go to IGDA meetings. It was great and friendly and it wasn't made AGAINST males, it was just nice to go to IGDA and know you're not going to be 1 of 3 females out of the 80 people there and no one's going to wonder who's gf you are or who dragged you there.
This thunderdome is just the same, it's fun because it's unusual, no one would want most thunderdomes to be women only, where would the fun be.
By the way, I want october! (we might also want the guys to do a hot men calendar as they are already practicing their metrosexual pirates)

Can ya tell me why at least? Seems exactly half the people here are into the pin-up idea, the other half think it's retar - erm, shallow and stereotypical.
THe types of pin-ups I had in mind didn't have to be X-rated, stereotypes, degrading or really venture too far from the realm of sci-fi and fantasy. Maybe I'm one of the few girls here who thinks war era pin-up art is actually a positive look at women. I'd want to keep the subject matter of each month fairly flexible, so we can get a lot of women here to participate but I still want to stick with the "girls drawing girls" theme.

I like the idea of males drawing males, VirusArtist, as long as there aren't too many 'roid popping guys. It would be made more interesting by seeing men drawing their idea of "sexy" men (as this theme is obviously what women think sexy girls look like).
*siiigh* I don't mind the idea of a women-only project as it builds the community and offers a kick in the ass for some women to participate. I think a "secret forum" creates barriers in the community, though.
I'm disappointed by some of the stereotypical uber-girlie T-dome topics. I'm just not that kind of girl and I sort of resent a shout-out to female artists BY female artists, that enforces those stereotypes. The calendar theme gives me that feeling too--at least for a first time project. I do enjoy drawing sexy women, but so do most men. It doesn't seem like a theme that sets itself apart. It doesn't break out for me.
No offense to the projects--which I do support--I just felt the need to voice a minority opinion.

You know what, I was always much more of a lego type than a barbie type but I can think of dozens of ways to spin stereotypical topics on their heads. Let's bring the pink (carnivorous) flowers and the (evil leperchaun inhabited) rainbows.

I think there should be a pros pinup calender, like with pictures of marko with photoshopped breasts and an xmen redesign picture hanging off eaach nipple...or one with him on the floor wearing german shephards ears and jason behind him holding a leash....and maybe a paddle...
also hear hear for the CA girlies pinups!:yayca: :D

"rod popping guys", LOL I dont think that would happen (or lets say I HOPE it wouldnt happen). THAT part aint sexy to me... if I would do a pinup, I propably would focus only on 4 things:
- the eyes ("mirrors of the soul" as they are sometimes called)
basically because as a heterosexual male I judge other men by their character... same applies to women- if the character aint right, I'm not willing to invest more than a handshake on both genders.
- the pose
has to do with the character too. I wouldnt do a "calvin kline" pose or a pose like the ones on these cheesy 80's posters, simply because those are boring and too cliche. I wouldnt even do a heroic pose or something. I like broken characters.. marko's he-man redesign would be a good example for what I mean with the little difference that I would try to fit characteristics of a pin-up pose inthere (not easy to explain)
-no androgyneous/young/manga (hope i spelled that one right) or "model" or "homosexual"- type guys.
when I call a man "sexy", he has to be interesting to look at. call me crazy but, iggy pop, willem dafoe and willam sadler fall into that category for me basically because of their character faces and their somewhat skinny but masculine bodies.
-a certain "tick"/breaks from the norm
scars, tattoes, piercings, a wild haircut, maybe balding, maybe distorted zones on the body- all these things tell a story. the more little "un-regularities" there are, the more interesting the character, ergo the sexier he becomes to me.
now that I think about it, i guess I will make a pic like that if I find the time...
cheers,
Etienne

shockhorrorfaint. Had a vision of shemales art that had previously been floating around here :D
We should ask HPX to do a full calendar of shemales! After seeing what he could do in prague i dont doubt for a second that it would be completely AWESOME. And with his speed he would probably be finished with all twelve months while reading this thread. :D

It's fun to be responsible for a riot thread :)
Really interesting theories are springing up. I'm really liking to hear everyone's take on girls drawing girls vs. guys drawing girls.
And, Steph, hijack away. I don't mind a bit :)

Now, now, boys and girls.
Stop with the incetuous molestering comments and play nice with each other!
This is a happy PINK rainbow sparkle thread, remember? Flowers and candy and puppies and hugs?
