Fozzy was suggesting that i add the def. for the Metrosexual:
The metrosexual, is an urban male of any sexual orientation who has a strong aesthetic sense and spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle.[M.Simpson]

isnt pirates pretty flamboyant in themselfs as a label? thinking more of the jewelery and the accessories that goes with the label.
so what you need is a urban living pirate ? with a flamboyant sence of fashion?
like the jack sparrow character but in a urban enviroment?
and he was wearing makeup and earrings and whatnot.
doesnt leave much to the imagination.
maybe i try this one still.

well one can define Pirate in a number of ways......think corporate raider. maybe?
pi·rate (pī'rĭt) pronunciation
n.
1.
1. One who robs at sea or plunders the land from the sea without commission from a sovereign nation.
2. A ship used for this purpose.
2. One who preys on others; a plunderer.
3. One who makes use of or reproduces the work of another without authorization.
4. One that operates an unlicensed, illegal television or radio station.
the other half of the definition.....
just stirring the pot

Push up the WIP's - spring the imagination to the sickest details. We can have a real art battle here.
There is no era for this - from traditional sea pirates, to space pirates or net pirates.
There is no age limit, no sex restricion, no religious orientation points.
It's all a battle of your imagination and your skills - and this is a good opportunity to sharpen both and kick some but.
Aim to take all the votes. AAALL OF THEM...

Rather than get too extreme, I decided to go with the basic idea of metrosexuality i.e. a guy who cares about his appearance and grooming.

Of course, the brief above says that everyone can interpret the topic any way they like. However...
I have a little real life knowledge in these matters, so if you please...
There is a distinct and clear difference between "metrosexual" and "anything vaguely or overtly gay looking." Vin Diesel, for all intents and purposes is a metrosexual. Prince is not. Christian Bale is a metrosexual. Little Richard is not. Men who spend a lot of time in the gym, get manicures and subtle eyebrow waxes are metrosexuals. Men wearing blousey shirts and velvet suits are not. There is a difference between being "metrosexual" and being a "dandy"...Metrosexuality is all about present day modernity... being up to date, with the times, healthy, fit, steamlined, sharp. Abercrombie and Fitch, Prada... those things are metrosexual. Boy George? not so much. Probably the best example of metrosexuality I can think of is Christian Bale's character Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Setting aside the serial killing for a moment, his character is the metrosexual archetype... body washes, face scrubs, ab crunches, Versace underwear, Armani couture suits, etc etc etc... A metrosexual can be very masculine. And even very conservative or mainstream in their appearance... but the point is to look ultra sharp, have the best of everything and in general really care about the way one presents onesself.
Despite what the quote above may say, the term "metrosexual" was originally coined to suggest a straight man. The stereotype is that straight men generally don't care about their appearance and that gay men do. Those few straight men who do happen to care are called "metrosexual."
So technically, Simon's buff guy with the tattoos and faux-hawk is the closest anyone has come to the metrosexual idea.
But again... you can interpret it any way you like...
Form
March 19th, 2006, 11:39 PM
ian thorpe (swimmer) = the first publicly recognised metrosexual in australia. he started wearing very trendy fashion stuff out, and at one point wore some mesh thing over his face at some function.. thats when the metrosexual term went mainstream (he was in the papers) and started getting confused with looking gay. So yeh technically metro was coined as a heterosexual term.
Michael Jaecks
March 20th, 2006, 06:56 AM
Yeah. I hear what you're saying, although I'm not sure I can picture the mesh thing you're talking about.
There are two other points I can make. First, metrosexuality is really about being contemporary, forward thinking and ultimately "pulled together." It also has a bit to do with status and success, because being a genuine metrosexual takes a bit of income (or at least credit cards) to pull off in a whole-lifestyle kind of way. Its not just a disguise or persona to wear out to the clubs... its a whole way of life that requires a lot of maintenence every day. Its extremely materialistic and expensive.
A dandy, on the other hand is more of a romantic revolutionary. Its about ostentation, flamboyance, standing out, making a statement. A dandy often incorporates historical or anachronistic elements into their personal style. Capes, puffy shirts, velvet, walking sticks, elaborate hair styles, even make-up. Leigh Bowery, Boy George, and (the new-wave pirate himself) Adam Ant were early 80s New Romantic Dandies. Being a dandy can often be a statement of personal style despite low income. You can pull off being a dandy by shopping in thrift stores.
In my opinion, no genuine, self-respecting metrosexual would be caught dead in a pirate suit, whereas a dandy might sleep every night in his.... but that irony I think is the challenge of the assignment.
One idea I had (and anyone else can use this because I don't think I'll have time) is to show a really handsome guy with a peg-leg getting a pedicure on his good foot. I think that would be hilarious. There would be ways to incorporate nautical and pirate themes into the sharp fashion of a metrosexual.... just no lace kercheifs on the head....

March 20th, 2006, 09:38 AM
So what should really come out in the character is loads and loads of vanity? I mean, someone who spends that much attention to his appearance wouldn't be troubled too much by any modesty right? It'd sort of be yuppie snob scum more than flamboyant sexually ambiguous freebooter. Or a combination of the two? I don't know man, going to have to do some heavy brainstorming on that one.
Michael Jaecks
March 20th, 2006, 10:03 AM
Yeah, I don't think "metrosexual" means "androgynous."
Again, the term "metrosexual" was originally coined to refer to a guy who spent a lot of time on his personal appearance, fitness, physique, style, grooming, hygene, etc... and that extends then to his apartment, job, car, friends, hang out places, what he drinks, etc. etc. etc. This person is so consumed with his self presentation that he is often (in accordance with conventional stereotypes) mistaken for gay. But he's not.
I think there are things that can be done with this theme. Lets take the Christian Bale type guy I talked about before as a template and add:
Hook hand/ manicure on the good hand
peg leg/pedicure on the good foot
jolly roger/skull and cross bones tattoo
hanging out in a sushi bar
Nautica brand clothing
the guy owns a boat but its a yacht.
guy with an eyepatch getting his brows waxed
a Calvin Klein looking ad for a new cologne called "Pirate"
Anyway, that's just what *I* brainstorm for the topic. May not be the way you want to go.

Hmm, well although I like alot of the entries thus far very few seem to be hitting the nail on the head. They all seem more gay than anything else. Metrosexual doesnt mean flamboyant it just means well groomed. If it helps think of a pirate thats infatuated with his own looks, a real egotistical bastard. Id say SimonL is the closest so far, that guy is full of himself, like some strange cross between an Abercrombie model and a buccaneer. I also like where AndrewLey was going, that guys expression really says Im better looking than all of you and I know it.

dude, what you`re describing sounds more like a megalomaniac or a narcissist.
i know guys who shower 3 times a day, have manicure appoinments, use every moisturizer available, got hair-do that cost more than their house, and only wear clothes with famous designers name on them.
and none of them is self-centered or think they`re the most gorgeous creature that ever lived. infact most of them are really unsatisfied and insecure with their looks. (which i guess can explain the over-grooming thing..)
while serving in the army, there was this guy in my platoon, that was all of the above and more,
and looked and sounded so GAY i was actually convinced he IS one.
it turned out that not only he`s not homosexsual, he was doing girls by the hundreds,
every chance he got. apparantley they were falling for his sensitivity and "gayish" charm.
go figure. the M.F. even stole my army girlfriend at the time. (but that`s a whole new different story...)
my point being - metrosexual dudes come in all size shape and color.
Nexus
March 21st, 2006, 03:38 AM
Chuck thats fair enough, perhaps I didnt explain myself very well. Ok first of all megalomaniac is someone obsessed with gaining power not his looks. A narcissist is someone obsessed with their own body. I think maybe I was looking more along the lines of extreme vanity. And yes I realize that metrosexual doesnt mean that you think your the most gorgeous thing ever. Im well aware that alot of the grooming and attention to appearance is from a lack of confidence. However thats not the aura that someone like that exudes, they give off a palpable cloud of vanity. You dont have to be confident to be vain. I have a friend that worries about his looks all the time and wont go to the movies unless hes dressed a certain way and hes extremely underconfident. My point still stands. The vast majority of the entries look more homosexual than they do metrosexual. Most metrosexuals dress nicely but they dont wear anything that would be considered gay. They may groom themselves excessively to keep a certain appearance which is commonly associated with the stereotypical gay person, but once again not gay. On the outside a metrosexual will look full of himself regardless of how he actually is. Its a side effect of the extreme attention to appearance, vanity is apparent through something like that. Honestly I dont care what the pirates end up looking like as long as they dont look gay. And yes its a fine line but the subject is "metrosexual pirate" not homosexual pirate.

in the mid-22nd century, we've screwed the Earth up something awful, corporations have replaced nations (sound familiar?), and the hottest high-end recreational activity in which young execs can count social coup on one another is full-immersion interactive gaming. these two and their chums play the pirate game, but they gotta look shark, none of this fancy dress crap; lean, clean, predatory, and above all, expensive. takes a damn good (read "pricey") couterier to enable them to "dress down" with high style.
spikeheel buccaneer thigh-highs for her, iridescent 300-thread polysilk jumpsuit, silver plated demi-cutlass with matching hoop accessories, DavyJones temptat (no one does the pain thing any more), lotsa attitude hair by ZeeBrusch.
camo-influenced tabi-style bootmocs for the dude (fully integrated arch support), coordinated with 220-thread neoKhadi muslin trousers, tastefully striped in 18K gold, an accent carried into the swashbuckling Flash Gordon-influenced polo shirt. his equine ivory (black market) skull & crossbones earring echoes the ivory & oyster handgrips of his two 1.3mm neuroflechettes (nonlethal). the Maazon-Sondaizo visuocortical implant has been custom styled by 3Geeks of Atlanta to lend the crowning touch to the cap'n's persona.

Sweet mother of christ. I think Nexus, Simon and I are the only people who understand what a metrosexual is.
Okay people here are my credentials: I am the exact opposite of a metrosexual. I am a gay man who invests almost NOTHING into trying to look good. I shave infrequently. Maybe once every three days. I buy my levis at a thrift store. I have long shaggy hair. I'm skinny, but I've never set foot in a gym, ever. I'm pale as a ghost 365 days a year. If yer lucky, I shower every other day. Cologne makes me ill. Manicure? What's that? I don't have a BMW. My apartment is filled with action figures. I loathe shopping at Williams and Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, A&F and the Gap. I have NEVER owned anything that has the name Armani or Prada stitched to it.
I'm not closeted, but, because I live outside the stereotype, I am often mistaken for straight. That makes me an antimetrosexual. Nevertheless, some philosophers will tell you that everything contains its opposite, and as such, I know what I'm talking about:
You can call it narcissism or vanity or self-centeredness, but ultimately being a metrosexual is really about having the best (materially) of everything and letting it show outwardly in the way you look, dress, groom, drive, drink, eat, hang out, and probably even sleep. Its an attitude that applies to every facet of life that ends up looking like a style because it can be seen outwardly. Its more of a synergistic effect of being sharp and pulled together and in a way, professional looking. Again, being a metrosexual can be a very conventional look. Very preppy or yuppy, even. Its about being fit, and groomed and tailored and sharp.
Short, expensive salon cut hair
eyebrows, and chest waxed
tattoos... minimal if any
manicures and pedicures
gym body
clean cut, no pencil moustaches...
expressions of color in dress are pointed and intentional. No mixing of crazy patterns. Bold, power tie. Tailored trendy shirt when casual.
an expensive wristwatch
minimal jewelry. too much looks cheap
Masque: you know I think yer super smart and I love the paintings yer doing lately but that midrift shirt has got to go. Last time someone wore one was 1989 and even he got laughed at. They're all in landfills now.
Wait wait! There's the key phrase!... let me repeat...
TOO MUCH LOOKS CHEAP.
Thats it in a nutshell. Thats the biggest difference between the mentality of a metrosexual and a dandy. Too much looks cheap.
Cheap is the last thing a true metro wants to convey.
**and the slovenly antimetrosexual climbs down off the soapbox. He should probably open the soapbox and consider using the contents.***

I've got to agree with Neo. Most people do seem to be going with 'Pirate Queen' rather than Metrosexual. For me, 'sharp and masculine' has much more to do with Metrosexuality than 'frilly and silly'.
Remember, Metro rhymes with hetero (almost).

what midrift shirt? did you see... naaaa. couldn't 'a' been :P
thanks neo', i freely admitted in the Critique Corner i was sailing unknown waters sans compass when it comes to this topic, a wise man recognizes the limits to his "smarts", and i'm way beyond mine. but i'm always willin' to learn, so, presto, quick work on the warp & the woof, shave & a haircut (two bits + $350 tip) and maybe(?) i'm back on track.
that's what i get for almost believing what i see on the web
expect further updates
the other aspect that's bakin' my cookies is reconciling the metrosexual aspect -- super clean and sharp, understated opulence, that bit -- with the frikkin' pirate, which always raises the spectres of Long John SIlver, Cap'n Jack Sparrow, and hordes of filthy, rotten-toothed, over-dressed, over-bejeweled scoundrels. Well maybe Yul Brynner in one pirate flick i dimly recall, he was pretty lean & mean and slick, totally black jumpsuit kinda thing... hmmmm

Very intresting neorepto, but you should also consider the time period of some of these. If you walked up to a pirate in a suit and tie, they'd probably think you were some sort of witch, then they'd probably steal your wallet and wonder what the weird plastic thing is for.
Super fancy and frilly was in style back then. Feathered hats, lacey sleeve cuffs, oh yea, that was the shit. Not to mention swords and guns and anything else that helped you loot. Once again, among pirates, pencil line mustaches might of been the thing.
And for something that might be a more futuristic pirate, same thing. Who know what they'll think is hot.
Michael Jaecks

Here's an excellent link for metrosexual explanation:
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-05/12/content_330015.htm
Keng: I hear what you're saying, but the idea of a metrosexual pirate presents a concept design challenge of an ironic sort. I don't think its a matter of keeping the pirate in his time period. Its more about how one fuses these two very different and even opposite concepts into one character. And that means understanding the ideas. And metrosexual does not mean "anything flamboyant or gay looking"...

You know who really comes to mind when I think of this topic? Dave Navarro. Hes extremely well groomed but yet he retains his facial hair. He has the gym physique and is always dressed with a strong sense of fashion. Look up some pics and youll see what I mean.

Fozzy was suggesting that i add the def. for the Metrosexual:
The metrosexual, is an urban male of any sexual orientation who has a strong aesthetic sense and spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle.[M.Simpson]
This is the definition they provided, no? Any sexual orientation means they might be gay, yes? You'd want to be in context but as long as its within the challenge parameter, its fair game. Besides, metrosexuals existed long before Ryan Seacrest. Its the term that is fairly new. Look at all the cool French doods back when they didn't have any flushing toilets inside buildings... they look gay to us now, but theyre straight as a straight twig, at least most of them were, they couldn't really tell back then. Why, if you want the first ever metrosexual who roamed the high seas, lets have some Cap'n Hook why dont we. Looks rather gay doesn't he? Dunno, maybe he is, but the story says he's not. He just looks it. What about that Simon guy from American Idol? Gay, metro? I don't know really, I guess he's just British.
Andrew: looks good as always!

ChOW 18 - Metrosexual Pirate
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a48/-Michael-/MetrosexualPirate.jpg
This metrosexual pirate has the looks of a gigolo. Lots of jewels and a high vanity-level. Tidy bearded with a big chest and characteristic small/slim legs. Chin up, cause he's proud of the way he looks, he's full of himself. "Look at me! Standing here in my best/strongest pose". Black shiny patent leather boots with 5 wide buckle straps. Oh and yes, he misses his left pinky, he still is a pirate you know..

Yeah well my thought on that one is the topic says "apple" and everyone's drawing an "orange" then why do we need more "oranges?"
Lukavi, nice avatar by the way. Looks like Klaus Nomi (not a metro, BTW)...The term was coined in 1994. Eleven years ago. It was coined by an openly gay social and cultural commentator to describe a specific trend among straight men. No one else has said it yet, but I guess that means the brief itself is off.
Ah well. Draw yer gay pirates then.

come on.. Neo,
we can
(A) - draw some more "oranges", because honestly - we all see things differently,
and we can
(B) - keep going on and on and on about how an "apple" should look like.
as i see it - with (A) we could at least enjoy a nice fruit (no pun intended) basket at the end of the process.
(B) just means we`ll all stay very hungry.

Chuck, dude, i seem to remember you getting into a bit of a snit at one time not long ago, over people not following a ChOW brief, seriously ruffled a few feathers and all. Has that attitude changed recently? Seems to me Neorepto's makin' some cogent points about just whatthehell the brief actually means, and where the challenge really lays. i say "post on, McDuff!" (truly sorry, Billy, about the twice-thrashed directive).

The good thing about this contest is that YOU will do the VOTING.
I'm sure you will consider all your deffinitions and understanding of this subject in your own way before voting.
As far as i am concern - (but i am not a judge) one can draw a pirate of metrosexuality (if tha tmakes any sense) or any vision spawned from those words.
I thought it is a good topic.
Tribute to the best pirates of all.

yeah the attidue changed - since most of the time no one really DO follow the briefs, and the voting process is laughable and remotely related to who posted a brief-tight entry.
i tried being serious and a pro about things here, but it seems everyone just wants to "have fun". so here i am, having fun. and loving it.
about neo`s points - they`re all strong and relevant and well put, but we`re going on and on about what a metrosexual pirate should be - while very little ACTUALL metrosexual pirate artwork is being done.
that`s all i said. no beefs or bad blood anywhere.
we both know eventually most of the voters won`t even give a flying F about what metrosexual guys tell to their shrink and stuff.
that`s all.

'tis a good topic, Oblio, 'cause it doesn't necessarily suggest easy solutions; presents opportunities for peeps to think past the facile & cliche interpretations of both terms.
____
yeah, but Chuck, i ain't in it for the votes, i'm in it for the money! :P :teeth: (apologies to Han Solo -- man am i the quote butcher today or what?)
seriously, though, what's a little bandwidth between friends? if a bit of discussion helps a fashion numbnuts like myself hone a concept, who's diminished by it? if a post doesn't appeal, just skip it.

combined with some pirate genes this is how far i've got so far...

Alright, I see what you're saying about that fusing togeather bit. Pirate and Vanity are complete oxymorons no matter how small an amount of vanity it is. Fair enough. But that's the whole challenge of this now isn't it? ;)

Awesome stuff going on here. So, here's an early WIP of my metro-pirate, kinda going for Pirate Ken here, I guess..Ken's old school metro-sexual. About 15 mins in on this..sorry for the roughness.
UPDATE:: This may be as finished as it gets for me, hopefully will have more time later in the work day.

Metrosexual Pirate.
how to be a metrosexual pirate
by Jason Manley (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=716152&postcount=19).
1. take dress clothes (anything with pin stripes...black preferred..). add four safety pins, six buttons, random tears, two pieces of electrical or duct tape, and two straps. place buttons on jacket. wrap duct tape on arms. tear jacket arm at seam. rip lapel or collar partially off for added effect. fix with safety pins so they are clearly visible. attatch straps to your pants pockets and tie your keys or lighter to them.
1a. one old blue or black sock is also needed for a fancy wrist to elbow arm band so you dont have to change your clothes every day! IT WORKS GREAT! stripes on sock are ok. cut off toe end of sock so that your hand can fit through silly!
2. get one scissors, three bottles of peroxide and fifteen sharpie markers. close eyes. cut hairs on head. when it feels like you have totally fucked it up, stop. dunk head in peroxide. wait until it turns yellow and rinse. dry hair well. break sharpies and dump ink in large bowl. dip different parts of your head. paint fingernails with remaining ink.
3. one pair of shoes stolen or "bought" from homeless man. Marko informed me that black socks are necessary.
4. for an added touch, painting skulls and fancy text on your sweet wardrobe is easy if you have a bottle of white out!!!"
5. place 2-6 drawing pencils in pockets.
6. Flip collar up so you are "cool"
You have now reached the goal of becoming a "METROSEXUAL PIRATE!!!!"
viola!
and a small description of what he's wearing... two dress shirts. the top one is buttoned to the bottom one. there is an extra flap hanging underneath, and one flap blowing in the breeze (i have worn this before, and it confuses the hell out of people... so i had to make sure everyone knows what they're looking at:)). popped collars for coolness. it's got the android pencil arm band, striped socks and pseudo rollerblade boots. and a utilikilt
of course, i referenced android's myspace photos. there aren't any 3/4 view, so i had to make it up myself. :}
Android is THE metrosexual pirate... marko too, but i didn't draw him, did i?
that is where they got the idea for this week's topic... silly pirates.
