Welcome back everyone, things are happening here once again.

You all know the drill:

New stuff added but it`s on the last page.

Cheers, I will update more often than once a year.

Yo! These are all looking quite good.

My suggestions are:
1) Get a drawing tablet. I have a Graphire4 and it is simply amazing - you'll improve three-fold at least with the newfound freedom.
2) Work light into your scenes, even if you need to find excuses to do so. Use PS's dodge to simulate light - it works brilliantly. Your first pic is pretty much spot-on.
3)Post more stuff!

These are real promising - keep it up!

Yup, thanks demented - you're absolutely right about the light - I believe I have an issue with lighting and contrast - especially in colour pieces, and also with direct (visible) light sources. And the tablet is the first thing I get as soon as I get some money ;)

In the meantime, here are some pen sketches. Junk'oid and random scribblies.

Thanks fooxoo ; I saw in your sketchbook you consider yourself "messy" - I have to say I dig your "messy" style!

Now for a new painted one...

I don't know, me and a friend had this thing going where we were supposed to do a piece every fortnight or so...the first "brief" was "spaceship". That was 3 months ago - here is my contribution, finally! He gave up on his...;)

Fortunately, I don't need him for projects now that I have all of conceptart and your great community activites! I love the Cohesion Campaign yay! :yayca:

Yeah!lookin much better!

I love your pen sketches. Solid, man!

Your last one also has the light your previous ones needed. Just doublecheck your shadows.

Good, solid and structural design. Nice stuff!

hi there!
demented is right, if you do this with a mouse, then you'll improve really fast with a tablet IMHO.Like the pen sketches (the first one).Nice enviros to ;) (man, i should really try to do some one of these days...)

hi,
and welcome!

I like your first steps in PS already! You should enter the IDoW, EoW & the DSG's
It will help you to improve fast!
Cool sketches you should try to render them!

March 19th, 2006, 04:40 PM
great line work + keep up the photoshop stuff - you seem to be getting there!! (you'll fall over yerself if/when you get a pen tablet - if your painting is good with a mouse just wait)

ohjay
March 19th, 2006, 05:53 PM
Thanks TheGnoll, Kei-th and setmonkey!

I will absolutely get myself a tablet soon - I was supposed to have one already but blew the money on one hell of a holiday ;)

I'm on the roll to enter the IDoW as well - just two assignments to finish up. In the meantime, may I present an excersice I did at a while back at Uni, it's called a "Morph" - basically, a creature morphing into a machine. I don't have the first stage digitized - which is okay cause that was in the beginning of the semester and it looked shite anyway ;)

Marker, pastel, pencil - the works.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h40/ojkiel/morph2.jpg

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h40/ojkiel/morph3.jpg

See you all later, thanks for feedback - TheGnoll when you start on your environments, does that mean I have to start mucking around with anatomy? Oh, the pain!

Alcian
March 19th, 2006, 07:33 PM
Love the pen skecthes. I think they stand out because they have more definition than your other work and are cleaner. With your digital work I think you need to make it crisper and less fussy. But overal you have some solid concepts - just the randering needs a little work. Getting a tablet will make everything so much more easier :).
I don't know if you have started to look at colour theory?. Experimenting with colour and really learning about it could enhance your pieces, keep posting.

March 20th, 2006, 12:10 AM
Nice! But the poor mouse :(!
hehe

Nice render! So are you a ID student? And did you learn how to draw like you did in http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h40/ojkiel/sketch1205.jpg in school or not?
I am going to study ID next year I hope I become this good!

March 21st, 2006, 12:47 AM
Yo, oj.

I love the last stage of the Owl.

Alcian is right: Your renderd stuff need to be a little more crisp, but that should automatically improve once you get your tablet, so don't worry too much.

Otherwise, not much to crit on. Solid stuff, man.

Post more!

ohjay
March 26th, 2006, 06:09 AM
Hey all, thanks for commenting!

Alcian and demented: Yup, what you say about crispness is taken into consideration. Basically, all you see here has been 'experimentation' - I'm trying to figure out what looks god and how rendering in ps really works.

Personally, I kinda like the style in the 'Stranded Ship' one - but it surely is quick and messy. I would love to give tight I.D.-style rendering in PS a try, just haven't had time yet. Give me time! ;)

Kei-th: No, that particular kind of drawing I actually stumbled upon myself - inspirations drawn from various artists, of course, like Robertson and Zhu.

thegreypencil: that sucks, I trust you'll stop by some other time. Maybe if I promise an update? ;) Images seem to be coming up fine now though. See you around.

Thanks, funny how people seem to like my silly junk'oid. That was just some crazy ideas runnung through my head and the perspective is slightly off...;) Oh well, guess I should do some more of those. 8) Personally, I like that sketching style, so it's all good then.

I don't normally do silhouettes, more like crazy, blurry, fuzzy thumbnails. Not much to look at, those...but they seem to be helpful. Maybe that's and idea. Maybe I should go clean the house. Hm...

Hey all, it's been a busy week! Well, for me anyway. So little time...

Thanks to anyone who might have given me awesome positive feedback just by voting for my funny tank in the IDoW, and thanks wakazou for your comment!

I decided to hop aboard the EoW, if for nothing else then just to practice ps rendering. Alas, where is my tablet? Money, I call thee vice.

In the meantime some thumbs for my contribution, think I will be going for some island-community living in buildings suspended between rock faces. Yoink!

ohjay - thanks for the comments in my SB!

*regarding a tablet - I bought a Cintiq 21ux from wacom. it's a lot like a really big, really expensive tablet PC. I like it, but its not a useful as i thought it would be.... I would recommend buying a cheaper one or finding one to test for a few weeks until you are sure it will benefit your work.

Also one thing i learned after buy the tablet - a tablet will definately make you faster, but is no replacement for strong drawing fundementals....

you may also want to ask some of the poeple on this site that do a lot of digital painting - they will probably have many more thoughts and tips than me regarding tablets and software for them.

*EoW(the last black line drawing) - it looks pretty sweet to me - nice composotion. the only recomodation i would have is - use a straght edge when drawing the suspension wires and the building's achitechture for a good contrast between the organic rocks and the city... Also depending on lighting you plan on using, the city would probably reflect to some degree in the water below....and the water may reflect on the city...

*the red/vanillia bike - you're right i was destartced drawing girls!

Hope this helps! I can't wait to see the finished EoW!

Hey thanks for the feedback rob-ot, quite helpful.

I've got some more thumbnails of the scene, trying to decide on the excact composition. Also, I started thinking about adding a vessel near the reef, some fisherman or something. Came up with this: (Nevermind the shoe-box car and flying stuff...:P )

Oh wow... i love how you prerendered your image before you painted it. Gosh, if only i would have done that first. haha - i'm so disorganized when it comes to things like this.

In the line of tablets..i agree with rob-ot about getting a cheaper tablet. If you were saving up for a tablet PC from Wacom, use the money to buy a small Wacom tablet (Graphire 4 i believe) and an Intuos 3... which would come up to around $400 more or less. i myself have has a Graphire 2 for several years, but never started really painting on it till summer of 2005. i'm enjoying it tremendously, but not forgetting my traditional stuff as well. back then the Graphire 2 was $99, but now it's like $50 or something because of the Graphire 3 and 4 that are out now (which are better, of coarse).

again, i like your pre-work on your images and how you think them out before you actually work on them. those concept vehicles are sweet and hilarious. ;D bbl

Post a more rendered one soon!

Real good job,

Hey thanks d., I haven't had a look in your sketchbook for awhile - I guess I oughta stop by. The rendered version of the village is in the current EoW, but here it is as well:

dude! This last one blew me away! That is simply amazing use of colour.
Two things though: carefull with shadows and reflections on water, and add some white to show the foam the waves create when breaking on the rocks. Working on the composition beforehand really payed off. Other than, that, I have a new background!

Great work (and i actually think it works better without the boat, now that i see the finished thing)

Post more soon

Thanks d., your comments regarding the water have been noted. This was the first time I've tried using custom brushes in PS though, so I think I deserve the leniency...;)

meanwhile, here's a quick and dirty rendering of my first post in the DSG. Slight remodification also.

really nice DSG! too bad there isn't any reflections of the ship on the ground, but nice quick rendering! ;)
as for custom brushes, i'm using some now too, and making my own. Here (http://www.sparth.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=44), Sparth shows how he paints with custom textures on his images. I tried it the other day, and it was freakin fun. If you can't understand the images, just ask and I'll show you how to make textures (and new brushes).
Keep up the art, and I better seen new stuff next time i come! haha jk

ohjay
April 9th, 2006, 03:57 AM
Hey Matt, yeah I've seen Sparth's custom texture section - and Mike Corriero's
here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=52822).

Awesome technique - it's not so much that I didn't catch the theory behind it, just need some experience to make it really stick, I guess :P

And seeing as I'd hate to piss you off by not updating until your next visit ;), here's a sketch for the current EoW. Realised after a while the guys were actually performing some melting process rather than assembling anything, but hey! Still got a week!

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h40/ojkiel/assemblyline1.jpg

Thanks, Stine and Kei-th, for your compliments - now I guess I should walk away from the computer for a while...

Hey oj,

These last two look just as good, and i really like the colours on the last one. I'm asuming that's molten metal or something? You can use PS's dodge tool to really make it glow and look hot.

And if these are still done with a mouse, i can't wait to see what you do with a tablet.

Great job, bro. Keep posting.

Thanks d. - you just made my day. Sure, it's supposed to be molten metal...I'll keep the dodge tool in mind. Although I think I need practice in seeing what colours need to be pushed and choosing the tones 'consciously'.

Thanks skeiff!

great sketches! I love them! you should do more!
When I try things like that I have the problem that I can't start.. and if I start it looks like crap. I just never know what to draw. And when I have a idea it gets a mess. But when I try to redraw/steal other people's work I van draw the shapes.. Do you have any idea's how I can solve the problem?

ohjay
April 9th, 2006, 09:55 PM
Heh, you're right - I should definitely do more! I love sketching this way, and I could use the practice. But for now, for some reason, I'm all hooked on playing in PS and doing environments...

Hey ohjay,

Your vehicle designs are really inventive. I can't tell you how many times i've seen a movie or game and thought "Hey, aren't those ripped off from Star Wars." These belong right in a movie, bro.

As for the PS - I love love the metal texture you've created. The composition is very interesting, though feels sort of unbalanced. And I like the mood.

As for pushing those tones consciously - that'd be great practice, go for it!

Most of the pros, though, don't refrain from using dodge (as far as I can tell). Some like Alexi and Pringle don't use visibly use dodge but still maintain great values. It's good practice and more "pure."

Anyways - keep at it, man. Playing around in PS is probably the best way to learn it.

These are really good - Keep on posting, bro.

Hey ArcoNL, thanks alot! Toned paper is a quick and easy way to get forms to pop out...some white highlight, some marker for shadow, and it's done! ;)

Thanks for that compliment Lewis, always cool when someone comments on improvement :D

tgfx - Thanks!

There's another concept brewing in my head anyways. I'll probably never get this EoW done...:P Need faster :ninja++: painting skills!

Nice work as usual ohjay. Your style taking more shape with every new post. A tip on organics: try doing anatomy - i found it to be really fun, plus once you start working with muscles, organic things look so much more organic. Even if you are working with essentially inorganic matter, knowledge of anatomy is a great benefit to drawing.

Can't wait to see that EoW!

Oooh about that, I guess I should get started...I might not do any drawing in a week or so, guys. (Blatant lie, of course)

Ohjay...kick ass stuff man. You and me are alike, tech is our thing. Thats why we are in ID hah. I would really recommend studying the figure, i have been doing it alot lately and i feel like it has helped my drawing immensly. It is a huge pain in the ass, but it helps knowing that stuff, it will just expand ur creativty even more. Those environemnts are quite nice, especially that village atop the water, very slick.

By the way, where do u go to school? I have been studying ID for 2 years at ccs and decided to switch to an ID minor and Illustration major so that i can do concept design. I am too obsessed with illustration, though the ID chair is trying to tell me that i can still do concept design through the ID department. A confusing bit if u ask em. Keep drawin man! By the way, check out some books on drawing environments if u havent already. I think it could help u to learn more about the composition and ways to guide the eye in environments, and ways to establish scale. Such as repeating shapes off into the distance and etc. have u checked out any gnomon workshop DVD's? GOod luck my friend.

Yay, time for a quick update before going to bed. Done some work for the new EoW, topic "breeding grounds". One sketch is an alien, swamp-dwelling thing. The other one is some cave/water thing, a popular fishing spot when the Akika fish are breeding. I am probably going with the last one, I liked the colour palette. Thoughts, anyone?

Hey ohjay

Both look great - really like the spooky Alien feel of the first one, could do with some light though.

The second one is the best, but I think it could do with a more prominent foreground. It almost start to look like the foreground has been cut away ... almost.

Love the way you work your colours.

Thanks d. - yeah yeah. Light, light, right, I know...;) I will put some more detail in, some light reflecting of what's supposedly trees and vine and maybe try a "light coming through a canopy" effect.

As for the second one, you're absolutely right, again. I need to do something to the foreground, especially the left part to draw the attention towards the fisherman. I will try that now. Appreciate your input, see ya later.

I try to do some repetition and throw in some new poses as well. I find repetition is key, even if it is from life it helps my memory of how stuff looks. Oh, by the way these are all with reference. No way I'm concstructing yet, maybe when I hit page 50 :D

Hey ohjay

Great studies bro!! These are going in the right direction - looking real good. My only advice is to, whilst studying hands, to exaggerate features and muscles - that way you will remember them quicker. Also try drawing the bones/skeletal structure on the referenced drawings - that'll definitely help when you start drawing them unreferenced.

Keep us updated!

Thanks so much Renier, Kei-th and slayer - I do intend to extend my studies in a while...maybe not yet, though ;)

In the meantime, demented will be happy to see that I am practicing my lighting :P ( I just had to do an environment sketch tonight: )

Hey Ham-e, thanks for the compliments.

And thanks d., that speedpaint you did in your sketchbook shows that it pays off to be obsessed with lighting ;)

Here's one of my bug doodles made into a racing vehicle...

Quick and messy, I just couldn't stop picturing that bug painted up in racing yellow so I had to put this out :P

normally i'm not so much into insects, but i like THAT bug! :) color choice is great and working with more light and shadow effects gives it a nice sense of reality, even if it's a speed paint. the only tiny thing is that it could've used a little more space above the vehicle so you don't crop the "bug"... great work, ohjay!

Hey ohjay

that looks great - the yellow really does it for the composition. The perspective seems slightly off, but I think you've really handled the surfaces and textures very well. keep painting man!!

Nice update! Love the bug!

Thanks people, d. you're right about the perspective, I guess. I did some design modifications during the painting phase, my trusty old mouse started to piss off my wrist and I ended up not caring that much. I'll make it all pretty in a month, with my soon to be best friend the Intous3 ;)

I swear I remember replying in this thread.. :| couldn't go past another aussie, nice solid sketchbook. EOWs looking great. nice hand studies, ermm not sure if you are know already but there's a nice book by bridgman on hands, it's called book of hundred hands, but I swear there's lot more than 100 hands. It's very rough but teaches the overall feel of the hands. ooop

Allo allo, wot's this?

Nice signature :D, how come I haven't seen you in there?

Really nice traditional work- very clean and interesting. On the digitals - I think it may do you some good to focus a bit on edges, what a hard edge means and what a soft edge means. Search the Fine Art section for a post on edges by elwell, it's good stuff.

Ahhh I was hoping I could go on without ever posting in my sketchbook again. But how could I, seeing as you all love me so much? :D

Seriously, I'm very much in love with my 9x12 - haven't got too much of an update but here is my very first sketch using it, plus another one somewhat inspired by WhiteWolf's WoD

Intuos 3? sonuvabitch.... :P

Great works ohjay, especially like the first one - making me think of Dave Levy (aka Vyle). Second has a killer atmosphere too. now, don't stop posting!

ciao dude

Thanks demented - the mere mention of Vyle in that sentence is a huge compliment.

The spaceship is funny to say the least, though. But it was all about trying out the wacom at that point :D

Anyways...working on this Space Marine concept - some first sketches:

Alright, so it`s time (about a year since last post, right?) to make this thing into an actual sketchbook. Meaning, I will try and show some stuff that I sketch on paper.

These I did last semester, but finding my scanner took that long. Maybe.
