View Full Version : In the cold forest...

Here's a painting I made during two sessions (couple of hours in total).
It really felt a bit like a painting because I used 'self-scanned-painted-brushes' (or whatever:P ) and most of the time 'other dynamics' option on.

Well, this is the REFERENCY...

just wanted to paint a natural environment with focus on an object but also wanted to give it a very natural feel and it was globally a (good, I must say) practise on blocking in textures. Made the most of it with sketchy brushes.
I'm quite happy with it, but something just doesn't feel in place. Is it the composition, or maybe do I have to pull the contrast some harder, must the animal be moved?...etc..

(I must say it's a little compressed and looks a tad sharper-and thus better-at my computer, it's also a lot bigger and blablabla)..

I'm a starter but don't be affraid to give some hard crits.
I'd really, really appreciate some feedback you know...

hi, in general it feels like a nice image to me, i like looking at it. There seem to be some issues with the legs though, the perspective or lighting doesnt seem to be quite right. Anywayz, nice work!

maybe give some ambience, some blues or something into the snow and up the tree, it could make it more interesting. unless you want to go exactly like the picture..

Well the head and/or front legs seems abit off and de-attached from the rest of the body other than that I quite like it it.

sorvan: thanks, I consider that as a compliment, especially because of the fact I just wanted it too look 'nice' not special or something. Your right about the legs I see now. :)

noche: yes your right. I added some blue/purple tones here and there but it just doesn't come forward in this tiny pic here. Maybe I should add more?

Thanks guys.

Any more suggestions still welcome!

More.... make 20 of these, try different compositions. What story are you telling here, telling me? Take risks, put something else in the picture, a kids toy, a dress, give your character something to be in relationship with.

thanks for sharing!!!!

Markwagner's got a point, not that u realy have to fix 20 of these if i were u haha.
But it would be cool if u put someting of ur self in it. Make's it also more
usefull to create stuff, ref is in my opinion more something to have a strong bassis.
Cool use of own brushes, how long did this one took u?

Well keep it up dude

It was really just a piece to practise some 'natural environment with an animal' and wanted to make it look quite natural like the ref (like I do a lot of that stuff lately, also good practise on textures...)
it took me,.. I think.. 2 houres or so. It's really different from the ref if you look at it though. Thanx for the reply man. Just practising my 'brushwork' in PS, especially because of the fact that I'm trying to do oilpaintings and acrylic stuff last weeks so I want to keep busy with digital worx as well to also keep processing on that front...
