Hi Everyone
Here is an image that I tried to do very quickly as a speed exercise - actually took 3 hours as I could not help playing with it a bit.
Idea - a stealth trooper, neat light weight gun, breathing ap - great lumious tageting graphic on his visor so people can see him from a mile off (not very stealth - I know)
let me know what you think...
(this fills the gap between my next even more adveturous project)

Well, I for one dig it! How do you get such nice fluid weapontry as a speed painting? Did you do paths or masks in Photoshop? Import shapes from Illustrator? Thanks for posting and answerin'!

Hi Guys
Firstly I had a couple of general army shots for refrence i.e holding a gun at the right angle etc, and pose. Then everthing was first just blocked in with a slim angled airbrush, with the hardness turned up a ntoch in CS2.
For the gun, again it was blocked in a dark colour first then I created quick straight selection areas. I often make them longer than I need so I can erase back to re ad a more fluid effect. These areas I used a generously sized white airbush at low opacity. (but I do make paths for my normal design work).
I made the gun more detailed, and crisp to add more of focal point, and left everything else much looser.
In terms of learning this type of technique I find my wacom essential, I wouldnt like to try it with a mouse. If I get time i might post the stages of the drawing if it helps.

shouldnt the sight on his goggles be on his other side?!
did you use a F-2000 for refferense?

Thanks,
I had to google f2000 to figure out what it was. I thought you meant eurofighter (jet) to start with which really confused me.
No the gun I used as reference was a really old looking thing, just used it for weight, feel, size etc. But I admit that there are some similarities between mine and the f2000, but I have never looked a one specifically. (I might post the reference stuff at some point).
your right about the tagerting gizmo - woops! - though you could argue he gets a second close up image through the left eye, leaving his right eye to see clearly - or something like that. People really pay attention here, I like that.

Nothing short of awesome. There's so many sci-fi or half-sci-fi armour suits out there, but this one stands out. And the gun's just great.

Good job! The design of the gun looks cool! nice job rendering too. The only thing I'm not too keen on is the little yellow light (sight) up on the helment. And if you were going to make it a finalized piece (rather then a quick paint) I would say his suit and stuff could use more detail. Stellar job! I wish I could paint like that!

For this peice I really aimed for a looser feel to give it some movement, but Im currently having a go at a really high detail image which will take me time to finsh.
Thanks for all your responses
As promised just a quick 'work in progress' sheet. I hope it answers some questions.
- enjoy

The trooper was completely sketched and rendered in Photoshop Cs2 or photoshop 9, whatever you want to call it.
Stage 2 is simply a colour blocking in layer. Where as stage 3 is simply the sketch layer switched on to see that I was roughly putting light and dark in the right places. However this sketch layer is switched off when no longer needed - its purley an initial guide. Sorry for not making that clear.
sharpness of lines? erm not sure exactly what you mean. But a small brush with high hardness for general sketching in more detailed areas and normal selection areas with a feather of about 1 to add a little softness to the edge.
I hope this answers your questions:teeth:

weir that you used that for a gun refference and ended up with something som alike the F-2000 (the gun samfisher uses in splinter cell) :)

Hi SiggE
It is obvious that I used the gun pictured above because of the hands and the angle.
I designed the gun myself (because I am a designer) but I intended it to be visually appropriate. i.e. I wanted to make it believable, so there are plenty of different visual refferences in my head, from real guns to guns in games - So I intended it to be a generic gun.
I have never played Splinter cell.......but I took alook on google AGAIN, and found a very large gun :-

(please note this linked image is not my work)
I hope this helps you, thanks for taking the time to look at my work.

Very nice work. It seams to have a few propblems with perspective towards the front of the gun, barrels, etc. but the overall feeling and looseness are really exceptional. Kick ass.

Thanks se7en,
your absolutely right, there is a touch of counter perspective at the top of the gun. Also towards the main barrel end. The elipses could do with tuning too. I'll make those changes, but I probabley wont repost this one.
thanks again.

Good looking and I dig the quick movement of the weapons (speedpaint). The angular looking weapon looks very much like the products offered by FN. Very futuristic
For a more realistic effect (*as a stealth weapons designer for a few years...*) there are my recommendiations and suggestions.
-CCD - Conceal, Camouflage, Decoy. Not yellow, but red, its harder for the eye to detect red or extreme blues from a distance.
-For the gun I'd add a Muzzle brake/flash supressor. For reference look up Barrett XM-107, look at the tip of the barrel.
-Shoulder flaps are a no-no, they make noise and can get caught on things as you go by.
-you have two targeting systems, in helmet and on scope, I'd have a movable flap on the gun mounted scope so as not to cause a reflection.
-For the armor I'd look into something like "Dragon Scale".or a multiplate design.
In general something stealth approaches quietly and lays a 10MT weapon in your lap. By the time you see it, its over and too late. More Ninja than Swat.
good luck

Spacetoy - Nice tutorial and piece - really love the movement and dig the stages. It's nice to see roads you went down then pulled back on to keep things moving in the right direction and sticking to the concept.

I dont get the stealth angle. For some reason it reminds me of laser tag. I dig the style. I cannot even begin to fathom speed painting.

pretty awesome stuff, only crit would be, wouldnt the cross hair be on his side of the helmet as opposed to the outside, I mean would that just be a target?
