Storyline:

The year 2446 CE

Mankind and its technology have advanced at an exponential rate, however trivial political, religious and social demands have caused the splintering of former superpowers into smaller nation states, pitting themselves against each in a number of minor conflicts.

Since 2395 a minimum of 27 conflicts, hostile incursions and border disputes have been raging in various confined areas across the planets surface, sparking a new global economy.
Covenants of major corporations have banded together in various factions and are now the true international players, feeding the ever increasing demand of new weapons technology.
The change in style of warfare has rendered weapons of mass destruction virtually useless increasing an appetite for more unconventional weapon systems, specifically the VidaNova Corporations newest developments in the field of creating new species of animals bred for specific purposes.

The idea behind this new move is too harness the animals natural intelligence, sensory abilities, and ability to traverse difficult terrain. They are currently working on models for civilian implementation, ranging from beasts of burden for remote areas to leisure models as pets. However there have been worrying reports of certain products escaping from captivity, and having unexpected effects on the flora and fauna they interact with, conspiracy theorists place blame on a huge range of subjects, ranging from the Cytarabinoside used in manipulating metabolic pathways in the animals, to mother earth resting control back from humanity to satan himself.
Some minor political and religious groups are already rallying, trying to bring this series of unnerving events to the public eye, wild rumors and conspiracy theories are already calling this the 8th day of creation.

"The Head" - Chief of VidaNova

"The Head" is the founder and chief of The VidaNova Corporation. This man had a high position in the army of one of the leading states. He was known for his merciless command and for despising countries hostile to his own. His hate and cruelty made him a much sought-after target for the adverse military but also even inside his own ranks.

It wasn't a big surprise when he was a victim of an assassionation attempt. He survived the assassination, but some areas of his body were mutilated and deformed and could only be recovered by bionic technology. After this radical experience, he lost his position in the army, but due to his good connections got a high position in a different section of the military. He worked as a high ranked consultant in the research division for alternate military resources.

Reflecting his own life-story to the military area he was fascinated by the idea of military units which are partially organic and partially technological. The succes of the first resulting military units and his pertinacity and ambition made him the leader of the research division. With the achieved power and success he was able to gain independence for the institute, which resulted in founding VidaNova Corporation.

concept: After the incident he opted for intense surgery, completely replacing his lower half with bionics along with a fair portion of his upper body. His upgrades were manufactured in accordance with Visanova operating systems, allowing him to physically and electronically link up with the research and testing facility (amongst others). The legs are mobile and let him straddle the Visanova hubs, plugging into the sides and top to gain full system access. The extendable cables from his left shoulder allow him to equip a standard arm, weaponary, tools or operate equipment (as shown).

concept: Mr. V. Nova's body was devastated by the blast, taking everything but his torso and head which has had extensive reconstructive surgery. His biomechanics were some of the first to be created, hence their exposed cables and crude appearance. He saw his role in this world as the "James Watt" of the Biomechanical Revolution, and requested his portrait be painted with one of his first successful creature hybrids. Though he never saw himself as an evil man, opposition took his new 'goat-like' legs as a symbol of his transformation into The Devil Himself.

little of his upper torso remains, everything else is cybernetic. Although the rest of his body has had more refined prosthetics added over the years, his right arm has remained unchanged - he likes its crude appearance because it makes his already grim figure even more threatening to his subordinates (and it can easily crush a mans skull - pop!).

concept: President of Vida Nova Corporation
The assassination attempt on the president in 2432 delivered an opportunity to use advanced neural and retinal implants. The benefits of these implants were instantaneous, re-wiring neural pathways and severed areas of the nervous system. This renewed his life energy, but, because of other wounds, he was not fully mobile.
A stolen antique, semi-automatic gun from the 26th Century, which was used in the assassination inflicted several life threatening injuries. Many of them were healed after the implants were placed, but the right forearm had been permanently removed during the savage attack. The president optimised the current designs that the leading bionic surgeons had made for a new forearm. He also had a replacement kidney developed, although this has to be replaced every year due to degradation of the mechanics.

Well I voted for digitalfly in the end, as I struggled with all the great ideas that were brought forth. A very dramatic shot and you get a strong sense of depth with this character.

Wow, fantastic entries everyone, it's really hard just to pick a few favorites. Regardless, Marco Mazzoni got my vote in the end, because it struck me as very plausible for that design to have suffered through an assassination attempt , yet still have the power/presence to guide VidaNova--the pose seemed very commanding to me. DigitalFly's was another top one in my book, just felt it was a little too blurred out...I wanted to see more of the detail on the head to get a grasp on what he may have been through. Also, liked Shamagin's, because besides being a great design, when I first read the description and did some drawings I always pictured him with a cigar too.

lots a good stuff here people! I went with Digitalfly's. I thought that best captured the sinister personal that I think would be found in this character. A dark, twisted man with little regard for the pain inflicted by his design.

As much as I love DigitalFly's, I've definitely got to go for Shamagim's. All in all, he looks cold and intimidating without being overly simplified and a healthy mix of man and machine. Design wise, everything flows together very well. The neck piece is especially strong, and shares enough details with the head to make a curious little link showing just how similiar the Head and his machines really are.

A great turn out this time, I wish I could say more on all the entries.

I voted for Hideyoshi. I really like how he took the whole cybernetic implant thing to the next level by basically making it the guys entire body. It just looks cool. I also really like the colors. I can almost hear his robotically enhanced voice. :)

Lots of other good ones too, it was a hard choice!

My vote went to Simonl, becuse the expression on that mans face, it says so much and gives the charecter so much personality and depth. His regretfull eyes gives a very nice contrast to the "big faceless corporation".

Voted for Marco Mazzoni. I like your take on the futuristic setting and bionics. Also, the character itself looks very plausible, as imp_pixel said. He looks dominating and a bit sinister. My one crit is that I'm not really sure what's going on with the grey gas coming from his head/neck.

I went with Digitalfly, at first I thought the pose might have been a bit obvious but it really grew on me as I took in the subtleties, like the embroidery stuff on his cuffs, really great almost old master feel to the. The character is regal in a hike-taxes-quell-rebellions way!!

I also really like Drake's piece, nice relaxed pose and utilitarian feel to him.

Also Cognition.sb I like, reminded me of the Master from Fallout series.

Nice showing guys, good range of personalities and cyber-enhancement levels.

I went with digitalfly's, the pose is great, looking out a window. He does look like he would squash a rebellion, as matias said. My seconds would have been Marco Mazzoni's or Hideyoshi's. All are well rendered, with believable forms.

I think a lot of there are a lot of super-creative people on here! But, I think a lot of the artists would see major improvements in their work if they took a figure drawing course, if that's possible in their location. I will enter one of these one of these days, but it's been a long time since I've tried any figure work, and I am out of practice. I cannot overstress the importance of figure drawing and knowing anatomy. But keep the creative muscles flexing everybody!

I voted for Duke, i think he made a really nice work considering objectically the concept. A really effective and accurate design.( love the face and the clean enviroment too :))

I wish i could say more stuff about all the other pictures, but im moving back to my country tomorrow....lots of stuff to check ( and i have to pack the laptop).


Looking forward for the next ChOW, it will be something to think about on the plane ( 36 hours :) )

I love the sadness and lonliness of the character. I also like the cold, impersonal, meaningless image on the computer screen behind him that seems to symbolize the character's psyche. It looks like the old man is caught in a daze of sewlf reflection wondering what the world he's built around him is all for anyway. the blueish grey emphasises these themes

Voted for Hideyoshi. I stopped the longest on this concept because it is the one that is most different. The expression on the face is empty, or in pain, or lifeless, kinda robotic too. Interesting because it's so different.
