I actually posted this one a long long time ago and I did get around to finishing it, I incorporated a lot of the great suggestions given to me, such as doing better research on the blade and adjusting the foreground.
I am still open to suggestions, though I don't know if I want to go back and work on it more...

These are very accomplished images. I think the first image is fine as is, but if you see room for improvement, by all means make changes.

My eye immediately focuses on the figure's pale face, which is as it should be. The colors are great.

I like the robot image a lot as well, but there are a few issues there. The tree looks a bit flat, and it looks like it's on the same plane as the robot. It took me a while to figure out what was going on in the background--looks like a large rock, with a hill topped with some trees further back. That's most likely because I'm a moron.

These are just very, very solid.

great stuff

the robot picture looks little "plain" in the background. might want to make it contrast more... make some stuff stand out to give it a kick

Thanks for the kind thoughts and good critiques.

Davi, I thought about that some, my only concern was any kind of distraction from the bot. I will have to take a look and see if that would help.

R_M, There really aren't any details in the shadows.

blackhand, I think (and maybe I'm wrong) its just one of those digital picture problems, where things will look different on one persons monitor than on mine. (the death pic is a good example of that, on some peoples monitor the red is really intense, while on mine its a bit more subdued) I will look at the picture plane, though a little.

Amazing stuff. She has a lazy eye, but judging by the quality of your work I assume you know that already.
Is this CG or actual paint?

I thought that the lazy eye thing helped to add some motion to the image and also added to her apathy she has about her work.

...yeah you shouldn't listen to me...it's just my own opinion and critique.....but what I find a lot of out there are works drawn on the technical side........I have a lot of respect for technical work but I believe there's also an intellectual side ....it's rare that I see that.....especially on a commercial level.

I think these pieces are great! They have excellent color and composition, and show exceptional technical skill.

That being said, the first piece is a bit contrived when it comes to the pose. It offers a somewhat unique approach to the image of death, as it is a female, but the skull in hand is an oft-used visual element WHICH IS NOT TO SAY that it is a bad thing neccessarily, but in this case seems a bit overly melodramatic.

Think of it this way: if the pose of the character seems like it would only occur in a photographers studio, then try to re-think it: maybe shes kneeling over the grave, or she is holding it in a different way, maybe tucked under her arm or balancing on the end of her finger. I don't think you should try to re-do this entire piece, but just think about the pose of your character being more real-world based the next time, even if the subject is fantasy....

DoomSkull- A critique is worth nothing if it does not present you with a viewpoint on your piece that makes you see something that you did not before. Nobody is "jipping" or breaking-down anybody. A critique is not meant to be negative, but should be taken in the spirit of helping a fellow artist to improve his or her next piece. Sakievich is a much better painter than I am, but I think I am able to see the piece with a different perspective than he had, and maybe that will help him next time!

i havent seen one person tell him something good about his artwork besides "it looks good", that he should continue on with, so dont lecture me, i feel his skull is perfect placement, over melodramatic, YA THATS THE POINT I THINK. Alot of writing is just a waist of ink

Doomskull- I apologize if it sounded like I was lecturing you, but the reason people post their artwork here is so that they can get other people's perspective on it. If He only wanted praise, then he would have posted it in the OOHS and AHHS section.

You said that art is meant to be enjoyed and not analyzed, to which I agree, but this message board exists for artists to show what they have done and hopefully get some feedback that will help us all become better artists. Even the best artists on this board WANT critical feedback, and I am sure Sakeivich is no different.

Again, I think these pieces are amazing, very well-done! And other people had plenty of good things to say about it as well.

If you want to post your own artwork, you have to have it on a web-site that you can link to (at least as far as I know, that's how I do it).

Thank you all for your thougts and critiques (about time!).

3bleadpencil- you are certainly entitled to your opinion and far be it from me to take that away from anyone. Yes, this piece is simple in terms of thematic elements, which was my intention. I try to focus more on learning the technical aspects of artistic creation right now, because I want to be good enough to paint the themes I wish paint. I don't see myself there yet, so I keep it simple and then focus on drawing, value, color and edge.

Doomskull-don't worry, if I let myself go around in some sort of self-delusion about my own abilities and disabilities I wouldn't get very far and I certainly learn anything. Alternate perspectives are always appreciated.

Muttonhead-its funny you mention the photographers studio...One of the reasons I painted this was that I liked the photo-scrap so much, this piece is from an old project that I originally painted in oil, but wasn't as satisfied with. I decided to redo it in painter based on the strength of the scrap. As for the pose, I prefered the Lady of the graveyard stance as opposed to someone more "realworld".

Zaphod-the webpage was down this morning. I had trouble with it too.
