View Full Version : Trent Kaniuga daily sketch and book
creedguytrent

I like the idea of doing a daily sketchbook of sorts showing the progress of my next book. As it stands... the book has no publish date, no publisher, no deadlines, and no real set style. On that note, lets just say that it may never be printed either... but "the journey is the destination" as the saying goes. I may miss a few days, and I may decide to go off on something that is NOT the book. How's that for a disclaimer.
For the most part, the entire point of this excersize is to get immediate feedback DURING the process of painting these pages, as I'm still fairly new to digital painting and appreciate any constructive criticism.
An inked page before any color. This was done a few days ago.

This is the second day of painting. I only get a couple hours a day to work on this stuff so sometimes its slow going. I thought Id do the scene in the snow because it would be easier with splotches of white everywhere... but nooooooo. I set myself up for a job.

this was done in painter 8. looks a little too "liney" I know.

This one started out as a self portrait... but... took on a life of its own. I was feeling a little beat up that day.

We finished the prototype for a project with Capcom yesterday (cross your fingers)... so I took some time today to do some much needed cleaning around the house and get my oil changed. I guess i could have done it myself... but then i dont think i couldve made time for things like this.
http://www.trentkaniuga.com/daily/actionroughs1.gif
I tend to do rough action shots before i pencil a fight scene in a book. This helps to clarify some visual instances that will make for a dynamic kung fu extravaganza.
I did this Self Portrait in the rear view mirror during my 1.5 hour (actually 2.5 hour) wait at the Auto shop.
http://www.trentkaniuga.com/daily/SP_5_1.gif
Did the pencils for this one at the Auto shop... got home and did a photoshop job on it after I saw some of the new stuff in thunderdome.

Just to clarify... I cant post anything from the capcom prototype here, in fact i cant even really talk about it. But NONE of that material is posted here.
This is either all from my new book, or just junk that i geek out on.
Im gonna try to post an update to page 1 tomorrow night after work. hopefully itll be done by then.

Heres a close up on that snow lantern. Something about it is still a bit uncomfortable... its not warm and inviting yet subtle and non distracting enough yet. But it helps pull the eye to the next panel.

nice work. i think the problem with the lantern may be that the lines are too dark.. .if they werent as black it might work better. most of the self portraits are pretty successful... i really like the last one, great mood.. .the 2 above it are nice, but conventional (not necessarily a bad thing). ..and i would really like to see you take the style of the sepiatoned one further. the comic pages are lookin good. .keep em comin
creedguytrent
May 6th, 2003, 04:09 AM
Metalwinds- Thank you. The more traditional self portraits were done in photoshop while looking at photographs. Mostly I just did these as a light/color study.
I really want to get comfortable in painter. Im still using version 5, and this is my first piece with the oil tools. I like that you can get so many extra color variations that sorta... just happen in the brushstrokes.
This is my 3rd piece done in painter. not getting the look i want yet.

Nice Portraits. So, is the idea to do a self portrait in a different way everytime? I think that's brilliant. Exercises the technical as well as creative muscles. How about one in your "Creed" style?
creedguytrent
May 12th, 2003, 04:33 PM
I guess a self portrait is like a journal. Its whatever you feel at the moment. Ive just begun to experiment with painter, so these are all very primitive. The idea is to just keep painting from life until its actually good.

Trent, this is awesome!
I enjoyed every post...nice thread and ideas...
I thought about the lantern light, and even if you call it done, i want to let you know about my thoughts (i am sooo nice :))
I think the problem is the yellow/orange color. It's to much mixed with blue/cyan colors. Maybe there are some layers on top, which weaken the orange-yellow. Actually it should be just a warm tone, but currently it's a little bit "dirty"...i hope it helped anyway...
Keep posting, these are very interesting!

Good morning Mr.K, I bet you dont remember me, i made a creed webpage along time ago and we talked through email for a while. I have been a huge fan of your artwork since I first saw an article about you in combo magazine, I was very excited to finaly find your webpage, and this wonderful daily sketch book, Its hard to find creed fans online because every web search for creed brings up pictures of that stupid band...
anyway, I've noticed that your artwork has improved as well as diversified, and I eagerly await more of your published work, do you have any plans for a new creed series??
your artwork has inspired me and I hope you do whatever it takes to become a great artist, I belive that you have a great talent and one day you could be just as big a Todd Mcfarline, not to say that youd want to be, but I just thought you should know that you do have fans out there who really belive in you, and yes it does soud cheezy, but it is true.

To capture the spirit of awakening, or at least try... the opening of the minds eye. In order to master an art, much like anything, it seems you must first learn to distance yourself from it, and allow it to flow smoothly as if in a lucid dream state.
Applying reason upon reason upon technique upon excecution, only after these things naturally are released can it feel true to its form.

Back in the saddle, and feelin good! I really wanted to draw some mech designs. This is the first real robot ive drawn since I was a kid drawing transformers n whatnot. Hmm... maybe a transformers piece would be fun.
anyway, the plan is to do this in watercolor and acrylic on board. Im reluctant to work on board because you cant just try a bunch of stuff until it works out like you can digitally. So ill probably do some color mockups in painter 8 before i actually start applying colors.
Non digital painting is a fear Ive got... this is as good of a time as any to confront that fear. Im still working out the pencils and things will probably move around a lot at this stage. But i thought it would be neat to show the process.

The mech does look like a cross between Masamune Shirow and Yoji Shinkawa. But the fact that you could pull that off at all is impressive. The layout is excellent; it would make a good cover.

Yoji shinkawa inspired. Funny you should say that. I had bought Z.O.E. 2, and was so inspired by the character and mech art in that particular booklet that I decided that I want to try and make an illustration in the same style. The thing is... now i want to take it in a bit more of an oganic direction.

normally i despise neon colors. Lately ive been into classic and the new TRON, and something that i noticed is that one overal neon glow can have a strong impact against a darker background. This works really well when trying to bolster certain creases in the armor and even the characters expression.
But ive also been picking up a lot of little techniques from the guys on this board here and there.
Ive got a whole stack of new sketches to post, i just have to actually get them uploaded. will do that later tonight.

a few of the pictures that i have digitally painted on this thread have been from photos. Those pieces that have been painted from photos NOT credited to myself have been removed.
I believe that photography is an art also. I believe that when an artist has captured a moment in time, he/she should maintain credit for that auspicious eye. As it is a representation of their own efforts and emotions (or lack thereof).
I really wanted to learn why certain photos appealed to me. I wanted to capture what it was that made them beautiful, the lighting the composition, sometimes I even really wanted to see a new dimension of that person. I never want to take credit for someone elses work, so im removing them. If i could, i would erase them, and take what i have learned from the experiment.
I think it would be best to cease drawing from photographs. if nothing else, just as a challenge. maybe its time to get the laptop out again and do some outdoor digital art.

Many people ask me what im working on these days. Things like the piece below are an example of the type of thing that im trying to do to broaden my portfolio to show a larger amount of skill in mechanical design and environment design, or life drawings. Ill probably color this later, but its really late right now.
Based heavily upon Yoji Shinkawas metal gear style, what i had in mind when i drew this, was what the very first version of metal gear might have looked like. Although i think it still turned out a bit too future tech, i really wanted to make it look like it fit into the metal gear solid world.

excellent work, I like your robots the most, if it's an area you don't usually explore you should definitley do so. The chick with the robot is still my favorite, but the metal gear bot is runner up. Drawing robots is tedious and hard. it's not a passive activity either, you have to constantly conceptualize how the pieces are fitting together and what they will look like independantly while bringing it together as a whole. Keep it up, your end result makes it worth it a billion times over.

Its something that I enjoy because it really demands a great deal of thinking. I would really like to flesh out the sketches of "how the hatch opens" and "how the rotating guns come out from under the cockpit, what the interior of the cockpit looks like and other things, but this one is almost TOO shinkawa inspired, so ill just move on to show another mech style if i can. I need to add a few more vehicle designs to my folio.
Thanks guys, glad you like it. This is my second snake piece... heres the one of solid snake that i did a while back. Its not an original design, just a variation on the sneak suite the way it was described in the original text document for MGS2 sons of liberty. worn, tattered, altered suit from shadow moses with a bit more cartoony style. Yoji is awsome, and i find his work very inspiring.
