Taking the plunge here. Typical story, been lurking for a while, thought I'd finally make a thread for c&c. I'm 17 (graduate from highschool this year) and have been drawing somewhat for most of my life. It's a hobby (I'm looking to go into a science-related field in college) but I put a little more work into it a year or so ago and have been getting a little better, so it's a more "serious" hobby. =]
I recent set myself a challenge to reach a certain point in a current sketchbook that I randomly marked off -- it's about 50 pages, for under a month, came to about 2 pages a day for me, which is more than I usually get done when not on vacation from school. Unfortunately since I don't quite like the paper in this particular sketchbook, and I have a lot of it to go through (400pg), some of what I've been putting in to make the goal is just...crap.
To offset that slightly, I'll post a not-so-recent, but favorite picture of mine to try and get on somebody's good side.

Here we go with the recent stuff, all done this past week.
I've been pseudo-planning a masked gladiator picture. This will not be him. :teeth:
03/02/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_02A.jpg)
A couple of sketches in a restaurant, more from my head.
03/04/2006 B (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_04B.jpg)
More on the gladiator costume research/planning.
03/04/2006 C (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_04C.jpg)
Still life sketchy from somewhere in my house... I think.
03/05/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_05A.jpg)
More still life, and from head concepts
03/05/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_05B.jpg)
Random stick figures to finish off for that night
03/05/2006 C (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_05C.jpg)
Started drawing the bowl, then got caught up in studying its reflection on the wood table
03/06/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_06A.jpg)
More silly stuff, I recopied notes from my Astronomy class and added from-mind imagery
03/06/2006 C (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_06C.jpg)
I drew some zebras from nat'l geo. a while back and thought I'd add one into the gladiator mix.
03/07/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_07A.jpg)
And a digital paint, which I am very marginal at. 15 minutes before I had to run off.
03/09/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_09A.jpg)
Which I am about to do now (run off). I'm looking at an art post probably every weekend after this, fyi. I'm mostly interested in concept art stuff, but I've decided to work on from life lately to polish up rendering, structure, and stuff like that, so general advice is appreciated. If you want to see some earlier stuff of mine, check out my dA gallery (http://rsnurkle.deviantart.com/), or this random directory (http://members.lycos.co.uk/rawrsnurkle/sketchfind/) of a few more uploads.

the sketch with the watch is awesome. it looks just like its on the paper.
good luck with the gladiator man.
the gladiator with the zebra seems like a cool concept.
thanks for stopping by my book.

Interesting stuff so far, just push those observation skills, really look at what your drawing. It obvious you can do it, the watch is a great example, nice work. Good luck with that!

Mort: Thanks, I had fun doing the watch. Zebras are kind of neat, so one might make it into the final *shrug*. Hey, thanks for stopping by my book. =]
Savii: Glad it's not boring, =D. Re: Observation; will do! Thanks.

Here's what went into the next few pages following my first post. Most are from when I was at a film festival, so they were drawn either in the dark or between bad science fiction movies (that is the reason "bad" and "wtf?" or "DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE" appear a few times in cropped-out spaces).
There was a page before this: I was warming up and trying to reference from face from "Signs." The page is pure crap, and would've been all blank stares anyways. Following that movie was a Star Trek double feature, the only ref'd sketch is the from-life of my foot on the back of some chairs.
03/10/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_10A.jpg)
Sometime after midnight we started on "The Black Hole" and the scribble on the right is inspired by the captive humanoids in that film (which was so odd). The left guy is another gladiator helmet consideration.
03/10/2006 B (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_10B.jpg)
Random clothing done during "Buckaroo Banzai", and not ref'd at all.
03/11/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_11A.jpg)
Done this morning, I think this is going to be the final helmet design for my gladiator, at least the face-plate.
03/12/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_12A.jpg)
And another silly digi-paint. 20mins of me paying absolutely no attention in OC.
03/12/2006 B (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_12B.jpg)
Apologies for the image qualities of this batch. I use a camera because my scanner is old (and cheap) enough to eat pencil-work on every scan, unless I promise it my first born.

That Zebra-mounted gladiator's pretty spiffy. I think you might need to work on necks and how the head connects to the body, because in your gladiators and other humans the heads all look a little off (in relation to the body).

March 14th, 2006, 12:21 PM
I like your gladiator ideas, they're awesome. National Geographic is the best reference, I have a pile of them. Shoulders and necks are hard, especially when someone's in a bit of an odd position, some more figure drawing can probably help that. Ask some friends to sit still for a few minutes, or take some photos (if your camera isn't bad) and draw from that, and of course there's lots of people in NG. Drawing upside-down is good if you find you're struggling. You have some great shading here though :}

March 14th, 2006, 02:53 PM
mlsfishi: Heads-necks/shoulder area, right!
Madfishmonger: Yay for National Geographic. Shoulder area is on ze list.
Half hour with my brain turned off. Because I just needed to do something PI-related before homework. :teeth:

You certainly have great skill just looks at that watch it’s amazing. That pie gladiator is great to epically since you said you did it without your brain on, keep up the good work look forward to seeing more of it.

Hur. Pi day = love. My school...sold pie at midday. Our math team's always proud to celebrate Pi day.
The shading on the head is different from the rest of the body it seems, though. Always remember your lightsource! =D

EKU_11: Well, I think parts of my brain were on =], but thank you!
mlsfishi: I don't have math on tuesdays, so in my class we celebrated on monday with pie, and number cookies, and a story, several poems (I wrote a "pi-ku") and three people reciting the digits. Good stuff it was.
Here's another during-the-week-one-image update (I did five pages in my sketchbook the other day, but that gets to wait until the weekend to be uploaded).
My next assignment in commercial design deals with high contrast images, and we're to first create a black and white portrait to explore positive/negative space and for further work. I did a test run today (because I'm actually ahead - most everyone is still working on the previous assignment, which is due tomorrow) and thought I'd scan it before I showed my teacher and it went into my materials at school. Black acrylic paint, with remnants of pencil I did not erase. Referenced, guess who! :teeth:

That's a nice likeness. Now if you can construct me some kind of life-sized realistic and fuly animated reconstruction of Johhny Depp...
The mouth looks a teeeeny bit off to me, like it's straight while the rest of his head is tilted. That could just be me swooning, however.

March 16th, 2006, 09:26 PM
I agree with Madfishmonger, it's a good likeness, but the mouth looks like it's asymmetrical. It might just be the shadows, though. -shrug-
And in a side note, what part of the Midwest?
rsnurkle
March 17th, 2006, 04:25 PM
Madfishmonger: Swooning is perfectly acceptable - I would have to make an animated reconstruction for myself first, you understand. =] And yes! The line of his mouth is not aligned with his eyes - it is obvious to me now when I can't/won't change anything about it (it's stuck in my at-school stuff now, and I think my teacher wants it as it is...)
TheGnoll: Yay for 17! Hehe, sounds like a challenge there about the digital paintings, =], thanks.
Pesmerga: Thank you!
EKU_11: Cap'n Jack is very awesome! =D
mlsfishi: Yep, stuff's funky in the picture. I'm a Michigander, are you in the area?
From this week (I haven't done anything yet today).
I've been doing studies and random line-drawings in our student lounge at school. Gestures of my dog are at the bottom.
03/13/2006 B (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_13B.jpg)
And on that day I went to the park, it was cold and windy, but very sunny.
03/13/2006 C (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_13C.jpg)
I was wondering what fun facial painting could go on this possible zebra-rider/gladiator, didn't finish the rendering (obviously).
03/13/2006 D (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_13D.jpg)
First sketch of the day, warming up in english class during a movie, several of these are of classmates sitting (and sleeping).
03/14/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_14A.jpg)
Trying to figure out what my high-contrast portrait might look like (from before I painted it).
03/14/2006 B (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_14B.jpg)
More Captain Jack Sparrow, all are from handy reference (and not life...*sniffle*).
03/14/2006 C (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_14C.jpg)
A quick run through of the first five people in NG and on the cover of another book, looking at necks. Not very productive, but a start.
03/14/2006 D (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_14D.jpg)
Spewage from my brain, zebra-rider thing.
03/14/2006 E (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_14E.jpg[)
In the student lounge again...
03/14/2006 A (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_15A.jpg)
My shoe in lines, and quick scribbles to remember an idea for bathroom architecture.
03/15/2006 B (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_15B.jpg)
Various things, one being thumbnail for gladiator angle - the shiny gold of the face plate refects an approaching zebra rider and the gladiator's possible doom. Blah blah blah.
03/15/2006 C (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_15C.jpg)
A setup for a study of a NG cover; there is a chance I won't come back to this... I have to note that this picture of the page is actually at an angle - the left (our right) eye is not quite that squashed horizontally. If I finish it, I'll get a much better shot.
03/15/2006 D (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_15D.jpg)
And another page of from-mind spewage, I was tiring, so things got rather random.
03/15/2006 E (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/rsnurkle/ca_sketchbook/2006_03/2006_03_15E.jpg)

Hey rsnurkle
One thing I saw in your stuff that a lot of it is unfinished even for a sketch for example the spacesuit costume isnt finished.
The dynamics look good somewhere and somewhere look like you need to pay attention to anatomy and perspective.
But Yeah I enjoyed watching your sketching.
Keep posting

Orozc0: Eh, where? On the coverstudy? Thanks, and yea, my camera and scanner are not hi-quality.
bhanu: Thanks for pointing that out, I seem to have something against finished stuff and consistency, I'll need to work on that. =]
Dwezz: Heh, it's ok to want Jack Sparrow, he's extremely awesome.
Madfishmonger: That's nice to hear from two people, =] I'll keep going!
So, a week's full of stuff nearly. Some of it I'm embarassed with, but maybe tips will come of showing it. Here we go...

Mar 24, 2006 - I spent most of this day sitting around at a science fair, on a cloudy day outside, which meant I was slowly drained of any real motivation to draw properly. So when I got home and glanced at some inspiring sketchbook pages from others, I got angry, got a pen, and randomly assigned myself to do nearly ten pages, whatever they were of.

Wow your on fire, I thought you had improved since last time then bang your drawings got even better. Epically that Skelton head with the bandana and those last 2 pages of drawing with the people are very good.

EKU_11: Thank you =D
Madfishmonger: Anatomy studies...right! Onto those...after break. :teeth:
I'm basically on spring break - leaving tomorrow for a sunnier place. I'm taking my less-than-liked sketchbook (I'm on page 149/400), my watercolor paints, and another book with heavier paper that I need to finish - no art reference, so it's just going to be from life on the island. I should be back April 10th with a lot of stuff, some of it fun, some of crap, but lots of stuff.
Also! Was cleaning and found this, back from Sept. '05...spoon!

The Cap'n is looking good, I like the contrasting colours. Something in it though, doesn't quite look like Johnny Depp, maybe his face is too long? I can't quite place it.

Dwezz: Thanks. I'm not quite sure I "get" gestures, but I'll try 'em out anyways.
Madfishmonger: I keep thinking on my studies that I tend to shorten/squash his face, but I do think it's a weird reference picture regardless. He looks very impish, but not very Deppish...
EKU_11: Thanks!
Ham-e: Cool, thanks for stopping by.
So, I went on vacation for my spring break, which as usual meant I had a reasonable amount of time allotted to sitting around doing whatever I wanted to. And since I still want to get rid of my current sketchboook (it is seriously just falling apart, and I don't like the book enough to want to fix it) I worked on filled pages with whatever was handy - which produced a lot of outright scribbles no browser should be subjected to. Ask if you need comments, I'm just putting pictures up to the 3rd, and then going to bed, the rest can come tomorrow.

First: Thanks for droping by my sketchbook, man!
Went through your thread just now.. Your dedication is admirable! For example the captain Jack piece you're working on.. Obviously you learn a lot from redoing it that many times.
I like that you're working that much from life.. helps you "see" correctly.
Your should top off all the stuff your doing with some anatomystudies (yeah.. the adage (sp?) of conceptart.org.. hehe... And if you spend just a bit more time on the ones you decide to render out more, I bet they'd take a big jump up! :)
Keep it up man!

The birds are great, you're doing some very nice things with colour there. Your figure drawings are definately improving, and it's nice to see so many. You can't help but get better the more you draw. Drawing the feet, heh heh, it's kind of fun, isn't it? You never really look at your feet until you sit and draw them.

Ham-e: I love comments! Hmm...which iguana? (I'm guessing not the scribbly one) The crouching girl I did put some thought into, I had to give her up after so long though, my head was screaming for me to stop before I messed something up really bad. Thanks!
dCepT: Thanks for stopping by mine! Anatomy studies and rendering for longer... :teeth: I really need to get on that so people will stop mentioning it, hehe. Alright, keep an eye out for that jump. =]
Madfishmonger: You should've met the birds in real life, they were so neat. I'm glad the colors look alright, was trying to mimic them without having the paper get too soggy. Heh, drawing the feet is fun - although I did pay relative attention to my feet anyways (I dance, so...yea).
EKU_11: Cool, I don't think I'll run out of sketches to show. That girl seems to notable... thank ya!
Unforunately, on the weekend I was rather unmotivated to post - my relative amount of drawing is dismal compared to on spring break, because I'm busy again with school and projects. But anyways! Stuff from last week, the "final" for component three of the contrast assignment (Jack Sparrow - I am a shoddy painter), and two digitals from today. =]

Working on a poster now for my commercial design class, as well as an entry for the song tdome. Unfortunately I don't think I'll have time to properly paint the entry... Working on it made me wish I had a larger mental library of ref'd anatomy, *sheepish* will go at that with renewed purpose when I get clear of this stuff.

Its good to see that you are doing some anatomy studies from life, but also reference books because you may see that foot infront of you, but you may not understand its planes and structure without knowing what it looks like on the inside. Keep on studying, you'll get the hang of it.

More random stuff from yesterday and then stuff from today (went to see a show, so several more pages of me scribbling in a dark audience). Pulled out some anatomy books, though I didn't do a lot of study from them. Went to a museum exhibit and then a wedding shower today. Wedding showers are kind of odd - besides the provided food. Exhibit was cool, even though I had never actually tried to do any serious drawing standing up and balancing my unwieldy (6x6 or 7x7 and 200 sheets) sketchbook on an arm as lots of people walked around me. We were also only there for maybe an hour or two, so more was being simplified or scribbled than paid attention to.
Any tips for drawing in museums lacking places to sit?

Unforunately today, there is no full self-portrait for the unofficial ssg18 challenge. I did a few studies on my facial features this week, a fish tank, got interrupted on another torso study, and then did a portrait of a friend at a party. The portrait is not a likeness, :| .

Sorry about that, wandered off for a while there. I suck.
Anyway, some amazing improvements! Volume and making things not-flat is very difficult, takes a loooot of work,a nd some ability to see that seems to be difficult to grasp. Your shading and your faces are muchly improved, there's a few faces in there that are just fantastic. I noticed your shoe...feet are easier to draw than shoes, who knows why. Shoes are so bloody hard to draw.
You've also inspired me. I recently aquired a small purse-sized sketchbook, with a hard cover, so it's much easier to carry around and use in your lap or in your hands. I'm going to be going on a field trip with the kids at work to the museum, so I'll be bringing it along and maybe I'll get some stuff like yours. That cat is lovely. All I can say is keep it up :) and I am sorry for not being around

You do not suck, in fact, regarding your being inspired and taking a sketchbook with you to draw things out in public makes you extremely cool and inspiring to me. Some of our group's just been on the Extremely Lite side, and I've kind of wondered where they all went.
On the updates front: I spent a week in Indy and did some stuff on the travel day there, but I don't really like it, and I'm about to scream through another five days of stuff happening all at once in addition to me playing catch-up. With luck, I'll drop off what I have of my poster and some better basic work later this week, I just don't have anything right now. =|

QUESTION: Is this page too long of a load?
Some stuff. The colorful, pointless, magenta digital is what tends to happen when I play obliviously with the paintbrush tool and color in photoshop. The charcoal figure was done for my phantom poster, but I started another version in class today that fits the format I need better. Other stuff, from life and mind.

So, in my sudden onslaught of free no-studying time I have done very little. =D Today, I did some concept stuff for a friend's game project I'm involved in, and then decided to try to learn anything about texture with brushes in photoshop. Two ridiculously experiements with color, a more interesting value doodle and me getting bored 20 minutes into the decent idea of a study.

I kind of enjoy doing out'n'abouts, they're good for remembering places, and they're an interesting way for me to do studies. I'm intending to do a more imagination stuff, but in the past few days most things have been crap.
A very meager update. I did a few concepts and studies for a game project I'm involved in, and then two pages of (bad) hand studies to finish off my nearly 400-page sketchbook. Here is the last page, and before-starting and after-finishing photos of the book. I was desperate on a trip for a sb, so I bought this cheap, mildly interesting looking one from Meijers, or somewhere. A bad idea...

On the first page it looked like you were still sorta struggling with constructing the head but it looks like youre getting a lot better at it, some of the last sketches on the first page are getting nice.
Either way, you may or may not already know of it but, http://www.anticz.com/heads.htm is a really nice way to construct heads, or at least i find it quiet simple to follow now.
I sorta fell into a rut of drawing heads n faces :P my anatomy reflects that ;<

Tee hee, good ol' blind contours. Be wary of some of the bends in the fingers - some of the ones you've drawn would only occur if they were...well, broken. Reference the fourth page, top right hand. Really enjoy the 5th and 6th pages, though. Nice shading overall, where you put it. Good mark.

Eheh, thank you, =] the result of long hours of near-mindless practice. The trick for me now is to try and construct shading to place correctly on stuff from imagination, as opposed to referencing from examples.
Something...crappy to serve as a self-reminder. This was done in charcoal, and more as an experiment in conveying shading using "planes" without worrying about detailed structure. I did not do so well.

So, technically I was supposed to reopen this thread back in June, just after I got home from school. I was also supposed to have finished a lot of summer projects by now... =]
I really neglected my physical sketchbooks, and didn't doodle much during lectures, but I did take a non-credit figure drawing class my fall semester at school, which was pretty cool. I don't really have much stuff besides sketches from that. There are about 20 drawings that I was okay with, so here aresome of my favorites, with links to the others...
Done with vine charcoal on 18x24 paper (either newsprint or sketch paper).

Howdy Snurkle! I'm not sure about those scratchy lines you're using in those figure drawings. Though I really like the use of blacks in some of these.
You should update more :)
