so, here i am.
a little intimidated by all the great books on this board, but i decided to give it a shot.
always enjoyed drawing, but when i looked at a blank piece of paper a few weels ago i realized that quite a lot had changed since i last took a pencil in my hand: first i saw that working off photo-reference made me LOOK but never quite UNDERSTAND what i was drawing.
second i lacked a serious amount of penmanship after working so much on the computer... :)
well, don't know whether it is ok, but i'll post some of my older drawings to give you a hint where i am coming from...

well, and now to the "real" sketchbook, my first page.
tried to make it fun for me so that i can remember everything more easily... and hopefully you can enjoy it, too...
i'm thankful for every kind of hint what i do wrong, because i know that it's much harder giving up bad habits than learning how to do it right in the first place. :)
in case you can't read my handwriting just tell me and i'll type my comments in the future...

:) thanks for stopping by!
i guess the motto here is "back and beyond" if that makes any sense...
quick motion studies and everything like that -- the drawings above weren't quick at all, they took me a day or two in the making.
so i reeeeeaally want to improve that.
right now i'm working on a face study of bernini's "apoll and daphne", but i became awfully slow...:dad:
anyway, don't want to bore you, thanks for your comment. :D

hi, i guess, that's a wrap for today. learned a lot just by doing some sketches, now all has to settle in my brain... :)
got my third page, so here we go.
hmmm, the scans of the pencil-drawings always look a bit harsh on the screen, so if anyone has a tipp...?!
i'll try to use everything i learned today on a new page tomorrow...

so that's what i came up with this morning...
i guess i'll stick with the nearly-profile and get a feel for proportions. people have so much forehead! guess, i've always put the eyes too high... so in my free time i'll start "inventing" a lot of different faces...

Jesus, your older works are incredible. I nearly mistook your Madonna piece for a photo. The one of your sister has lovely color to it.
Nice studies so far, and I'm liking your note style/content (the muscle marriage cracked me up :D). I'll be watching you! :)

thanks, lotekk! liked your sketchbook a lot, hopefully i can get to such dynamic poses in the next few weeks...
now i notice that some proportions in these old drawings are a bit off. but anyway, it was fun making them... :)
i realized i made the eyes on that male head a bit big, so i'm trying to avoid that in my latest sketches.
guess, tonight i can post my next page...

it is very important to do lifedrawings.try to learn something about light; it will help you improve your drawings which now just seem too flat, they have no depth

March 10th, 2006, 08:40 AM
hi there and thanks for taking the time to look at my stuff...
bhanu, right now i'm using a regular anatomy book (the sobotta) and look at a drawing book i borrowed in our library. it's the only one i could get and by andras szunyoghy... also, a friend of mine was kind enough to lend me his bob kato gnomon dvd's, so i thought i was well set. :)
vali, you're definetely right! unfortunately no one wants to be my model and we don't have any classes here, so i try to do my best and work with photo-references and a mirror... :) i hope to get more lights and shadows involved in future drawings, right now i'm just so busy with getting the proportions right (beginner's mistake, i guess...). thanks a lot for pointing that out!
so, i've got my 5th page done.
it's a combination of reference photos for body parts i wasn't sure how to draw and the measure-method. so it's half-reference half-invented. but the lady isn't too happy... guess it's still a long way, but it's only day 2...

i did it from a photo reference - in case you're interested, it's here (http://www.stockholmsgruppen.com/index.asp). great source for faces, by the way... the photo is in the people-section, men, age 50-100, and the gentleman's name is tommy p. :)
don't know whether it has any copyright, so i only post a link, not the photo itself...
when you compare you see that i'm still far away from getting a serious resemblance, but i was really glad i could manage the proportions. one step after the other... :)
i decided to stick with faces for now -- got my hands on the loomis-books and try to read them over the weekend and hopefully finish another page.
again, thanks everybody for responding!

okay, another small and quick sketch. did it this morning. try to use more b/w photos in the future to concentrate a little more on values (my rendering is poor so far...).
next time i want to use old photographs because they normally have interesting things like hats, unique glasses, strange hairdos etc...
well, i know this thread isn't very exciting, but i hope you can tell that i have a lot of fun learning the basics. so i'm just silently working on... :)

why don´t you get yourself a book with photographs by
August Sander
like: "Antlitz der Zeit" or "Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts"

they are great references and show a lot of different types of people
nice works btw
it´s just fine if they are fun to you cause thats the way it should be^^

hey guys, thanks a lot for commenting...
infinit - great tipp with the book. i used one of mine that has a huge collection of photos, but i didn't know that august-sander-book. our library has it, so i ordered it and can hopefully pick it up tomorrow.
tensai - nice of you to stop by a rookie's sketchbook, really appreciated!
and lotekk - if you like the clippings you will like my next page. :) thanks for your nice comment!
i was actually looking for a little more dramatic lights and tried to render the face a little more. i found portraits of 50's moviestars very interesting, but then decided to draw the explorer fridtjof nansen... i'm not totally happy with it and have to check more anatomy to get the lightning right...
so here we go. i guess that's the last page for today, but i'll try to post some more tomorrow. the photo of nigel kennedy is for reference. it's an extreme lightning, but i found it very interesting...
thanks again for visiting... :)

Hi there nice sketches and studys
be carefull not to concentrate on heads (or anything else) too much. if you do so you might get stuck and you will have problems to get a balanced overall feel
just jump in the cold water and do some fullbody drawings (we can´t say worse things then "you suck go home" ^^)
btw: my first postings of fullbody pics were grose, a shame, terrible and much more
but people will help you!

keep the studies up they are looking good. I find that pushing my knowledge and trying to draw the head at difficult angles improves your knowledge of the form and makes it much easier to draw. also try not to focus just on the head. start doing some studies on the body too.

you guys can really keep my motivation-level high! greatly appreciated!
so, here's my very first attempt in figure-drawing. i studied michelangelo, raffael and leonardo yesterday night and wanted to draw some of them. but then i watched a second-world-war-refugee-documentary on tv - they zoomed in photographs really slowly and i thought i could draw a little in that time.
after that i refined it with correct proportions etc.
well, it's a starting point, right? :)

so, there's my new page -- just getting used to the full figure proportions by drawing small silhouettes. these are much more forgiving for a beginner like me, but i'm planning to go into the details, don't worry! :)
oh, it's from photo-reference, old photos from the 1920's. each person took me 2-5 minutes. yeah, i know, i'm pretty slow, but it's only day 08... :P

good
you really show talent when it comes to figure drawing
I rly don´t know what scared you that much
I esp like the way you shade, it makes your figures very lifely
the legs of the policeman with the "pickelhaube" look odd, too thin and far apart imo

drawing silhouettes is actually a lot of fun! and you're right, the policeman looks a little strange...
i continued a little bit today - found some photos of a maneuver in 1913 and tried to draw horses, just for the fun of it.

hello again,
i'm still on "vacation" and found a book about soccer-world-championship 1978 in argentina. and since this year's world championship is here in germany i thought a little quiz would be nice: i draw small portraits of famous (?) soccer players/coaches and you can guess who it is if you like... (i give small hints)
hmmm, i like watching football (as we call it here), but i'm not a huge fan, so sorry if i don't pick the most famous players but the most interesting photos...
so here's my first one

ArcoNL
March 29th, 2006, 07:47 AM
It was an educated guess. It's the only name of a French fussbal player I can come up with. :P
I told you I'm really not into football.
Especially those over the top crazy dutch football fans, all dressed in orange and wearing the most ridiculous outfits (giant wooden clogs, tulips, carrots) etc.
And if you really want to see something disgusting: go take a look at Helmpje (http://www.helmpje.nl). The guy who came up with this "fantastic" commercial idea should be shot....
stine
March 29th, 2006, 08:38 AM
thanks for the link, i really laughed out loud when seeing that page... some fans are just a little crazy... "unfortunately" they are not allowed to wear them in germany to the championships... at least that's what i understood reading the texts (my dutch isn't good at all).
well, it's a pity you "only" guessed. i didn't know platini was famous (sorry, i'm really not a football-fan!), but i guess i have to work on my resemblance-level anyway, so i better get going.
thanks for stopping by, arco. see you here or in your sketchbook (great leonardo-studies btw, but i'll tell you that in your book!).
ArcoNL
March 29th, 2006, 08:44 AM
They are not allowed to wear the helmets to the Orange training matches before the tournement, but the Dutch national football organization can't forbid anything in Germany. I personally find it a bit tasteless to wear bright orange nazi helmets to the championships in Germany.
But don't worry too much about your portraits. They are pretty good as far as I can tell.....

this is all good work i especially like the sp , but what the hell are you drawing on... is this printer paper on top of concrete ? Theres a texture there that doesn't seem to be from the pencil, and it makes the line and texture hard to read, and if it is something under the paper its probably making it hard for you to draw too...

I have three rather old encyclopedias which have a problem in that most of the images are drawings rather than photos. So last night I discussed this with my wife. I will start using her photo's (she's a horse & animal photographer).

arco - yeah, it's kind of hard to find a good book on animals. mine had photos, but they were all in a low quality and looked almost a little blurry... but i keep looking, although i guess i'm going to start my studies on the human figure now... great you have that "source" with your wife's photography, looking forward to your new sketches! :)
bhanu - thanks a lot for stopping by and the encouraging words. you're absolutely right with the hands. guess i fell for the beginner's mistake of redrawing a bad line and emphazising it with that instead of just leaving it alone...:) hands and feet are SO on my agenda for the next days/weeks.

hi! thanks for stopping by!
dile: thanks a lot! it's a german book called "hogarth's zeichenschule" (hogarth's drawing school) and it's a compilation of his books dynamic figure drawing, dynamic anatomy, drawing the human head, drawing dynamic hands, drawing wrinkles and drapery and dynamic light and shade
if i'm reading it right, it was originally published in the "evergreen"-series...
it's really great having all of these informations in one book, althought it's not newly sorted by topics so you have to flip through it some times...
skeiff: thank you! i will definetely have a look at your sketchbook then. i've only started my hogarth-studies yesterday, so i guess you're way ahead of me... :)
so, here's my latest page. still working on hands and feet and general rhythm. sometimes i find it a little bit difficult to work from somebody else's sketches instead of "objective" photos. but that's probably just getting used to it. i guess i will mix my hogarth-studies with photo-ref and life-drawing anyways...

well, hogarth is a lot to learn, so i did some small portraits from photo for relaxation...
did it with blue pencils my grandpa had for his office work and i now have (about 25 of them...:)). they have very fine pigments, but they are almost impossible to correct (because that's what they were made for). well, as if i needed another challenge... :) hmmm, the scan didn't get all the values, but i guess you get the idea.
looked for interesting people and found the old woman in a magazine. it's not often you get to see people without teeth. and the guy is a famous german politican from the 50s and NOT humphrey bogart...
i found it interesting to draw a little strange and uneven faces and see whether i can transport their features without people telling me the anatomy is off... so what do you think?

Yeah, hogarth is the man, his books are all you need a long with bridgman. Looks like you got good pencil skill, the latest faces look like they have been drawn so softly. Hi there, I'm here to prove that SSG's can help.
Judging by most of your sketches there are'nt any construction lines I would suggest you rectify this. Though there may not be any construction lines you show an aptitude for observing the outline of the form. Lastly keep drawing as much from life as possible, till next time bye for now.
p.s. The design of your website and content are welldone, I like it alot.
edit:Above I'm talking about the 1st page of your SB here did'nt realise there was a second so this doesnt apply to the second page.
I like how you did'nt get bogged down in copying the Hogarth legs and try to immitate his drawing style and used your own more comfortable way of deciphering his drawings I do the same thing. Also the reinactment of the Davinci drawing is nice also, is it a self portrait using a mirror must of been difficult to draw the eyes looking down if it was.

nii - thanks for stopping by! well noticed! i still try and avoid looking for the outline first. bad habit... but i'm glad it shows a little on the second page... :) i normally use construction lines, i just try to get rid of them in the end, cause i find them kind of disturbing. mostly i just keep the measurement points (as you see in most sketches on the first page)... oh, and the portrait was done with the mirror but also with leonardo's sketch in front of me. it was my goal to understand everything he did by seeing it "in life". so the drawing is a combination of both... oh, and thanks for the compliments on my website. it's always so hard to decide what could possibly represent yourself a little... :)

Hey Stine, i really like your style, i see you're in to portraits like i am in to portraits. The hand studies are showing improvement. When drawing hands look at the negative spaces between the fingers - they are more helpful than just drawing the fingers as you see them. What works best is: draw the overal shape (a few straight lines), lightly indicate where the fingers are then draw in the negative spaces, hope that helps. ~Alcian

Hey Stine, about your hands they are coming along quite nicely you have a nice gesture, but i also see hesitation lines in your work as well. What you may want to try doing is pick some of your favorite artists works and draw thier hands. Do a whole page of hands. Not only draw from life but also from other artists to see how they approach hands. Also if you have a digital camera take pictures of your hand in contorted and crazy poses this will help see how the hand moves as well at the hands limitations. I'm glad to be in the sketchgroup
And here's another tip to break the hand up into 2 parts. From the wrist to the knuckles is one half and from the knuckles to the tip of the middle finger is the second half. Thats way way to mentally gear your mind to breaking it down into 2 parts.
stine
April 13th, 2006, 03:00 PM
thanks, ashrumm. you bet there are hesitation lines! :) thanks for the tipp, i'll draw hands from reference tomorrow. but drawing from life today was good, gave me a general idea for the volume, now i just have to practise and get those measurements in my head...
yup, i'm glad we have our "ssg no.20", too! :)
oh, btw: you study 3d modelling? wow, that's great...
Ashrumm
April 14th, 2006, 03:49 AM
Yeah i study 3d modeling, its interesting you asked, because i had a talk with my department head and we both agreed the better you can draw means the better you can understand and see form. Which basically means you can pretty much do anything artistically speaking. So i'm actually customizing my curriculum to more of an illustartion/3d hybrid kind of duo. I'm really excited he said i could customize my curriculum. I can't wait to see what you have up i'll talk to you later.

Your gesture drwings are comming along nicely, I also find dynamic poses alot more enjoyable to draw especialy with a good silhouette. Try and draw quik skeletal roughs of the gestures, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. That said your doing well without them, I like the few lines it took for you to define the face top left of the last sketch, well done.

Hi Stine:)
Really like your updates, the marx brothers poses are great! My humble suggestion for the hands is that you aproach them as though they were a dynamic figure, hands are very expressive think of them as having a life of their own. loosen up a bit: Try to do a few blind pure contour drawings really slowly, it won't look much like a hand, but I find it's a useful exercise.
waiting for the next update:overhere:

I love seeing hand studies, always helps me see more poses and foreshortening. One thing I like to do is block out hands using...well blocky shapes:) One for the palm, one or two for groups of fingers then one last one for the thumb. Don't be afraid to make blocky hand studies because it really help with form and the understanding of lighting on the hand.
After you are comfy with that you can add more facets to your blocks and make separate blocked out fingers. This is juts the way I like to do it anyways, everyone has their methods:)
Keep up the good works!

Hey Stine, you've been busy as well, Your gestures are awesome, and thanks for the comments regarding the anatomy, I don't think i'm that much further along than you are. Just give it a try just put basic shapes where you know key muscle groups go, for example balls for the shoulders and head, a cube or an egg for the rib cage etc. Actually i should probably go a bit more basic so i can get better understanding of how we are all connected. Your hands, yeah are pretty good but your fingers are a bit sausagey thats fine though everyone else already gave you really good advice on practicing hands just work real gestural for now don't worry about how they look try and get good structure first.

thanks a lot for stopping by, guys.
's been a busy day (still is...), so no update (sorry)...
ham-e: thanks for having a look. so we're both doing our hand studies, eh? :) thanks for the tipp with the dynamic silhouettes. strange that i could get it fairly with the persons and struggle with the hands... and i'll definetely try that blind drawing. have heard of it before but forgot about it. thanks for reminding me. :)
dreln - hey, welcome to my little book and thanks for the comment. still need to get rid of the habit drawing everything from the outline and instead think of volumes and masses... thanks!
wolfbane - thanks for stopping by again! eyes are my friends, noses my natural enemies. :) so much to learn... guess my next drawing will be a portrait again. just for the fun of it... :)
ashrumm - thanks a lot. i will get into the body masses soon. wanted to get a general feel for proportions by these little silhouettes, now i have to start doing the nude figures to get the anatomy down. did some arm studies while watching nba yesterday (don't laugh!), but that's just a small beginning... thanks for stopping by! oh, my little apple sketch in bumskees thread was actually my very first post here. very cool you're doing that there. your apple's looking great! G'day Stine. Go hard on that thesis don't stress over updating if you'r too busy, not saying you can't juggle both I'm sure your having no problems. You hands are stil an issue, try pretending like your about to exagerate the curves but also stick with what your observing at the same time (I may sound more confusing than helpful). Good to see youve done some animal studies, have a go at more. Till next time.

Wow, been a while since I last visited your sketchbook. Looking fantastic, and great to see you've been keeping up with it. Love the Hogarth studies, they're showing some really nice form and lines. As before, I really like how you're doing your little thumbnail figures; it's impressive how much you're able to express with so little. :) The Marx brothers page is probably my favorite so far. :P Great animal studies, too. Are you doing any of the animals from life, or are you working from photos? If I could be so bold, I'd like to see more stuff from life. :)

lotekk - hey, nice of you to visit again and thanks for the compliment - guess with my silhouette the bad habit of working with the outline pays off a little... :) i'm mostly working from photographs and from dvd. trying to get away from freeze framing and getting to realtime. hands are mostly mine (from life). and the fact that i really struggle with them shows i should do more stuff from life! :)

I find it funny that you enjoy drawing older ladies, because from my personal experience older people are harder to draw due to the wrinkles and facial detail it can be a pain if you know what i mean. I really like your portraits they look very fine art, due to the line variation and suddle tones in certain areas. Good work Stine, don't worry an update is an update. If its only one piece or a hundred progress is progress. See you on the flip side. :D

Ok get out of the comfort zone and into the danger zone...im a dork, sorry. When it comes to your quick studies, try to draw the figure in the least amount of lines as possible...this also goes for longer poses. You are getting the chicken scratch effect by constantly drawing the same line over and over to define a shape....1 line is all you need. Remember that lines should be "S" and "C" curvers or straights

Woot, more hand studies! I realy like the last one at the bottom of the page with the knuckles, I also like the bottom one in the previous page!
Ham-e uses a perfect term for over doing it on your lines, the shapes tend to lose their...well, shape when it happens to much. Maybe as an experiment after you have feathered out your hand shape lightly, draw in some heavier outlines to pop the hand right out of all the lines, dunno how that will look to you but it might be worth a try.
The portrait is looking great too!

April 25th, 2006, 05:05 PM

damn, you're all so perfectly right! i always tend to scribble way too much when i'm a bit in a hurry (which has been the case the last few days). need to concentrate more on the single line, that lack of confidence surely shows. thanks a lot for pointing that out again. sorry, should have focused on that before. i'll try and use more precise lines, i promise! more hands tomorrow, thanks a lot for having a look! :)

today i have an "almost) free day so i took my time this morning to draw a little slower, more concentrated page. sorry it took me so long to actually change my lines. guess i thought the better line quality would come along the way, but it's mostly about staying calm and relax while drawing.
so i tried it this morning. not happy with all of the hands, but that's the learning process and i got 94% ahead of me... :)

To help with forming your lines I would suggest this exercise. Draw something anything that's satic not moving like dirty washing (I got lots) or set something up. But when you draw do not I repeat do not look at your paper, slowly draw around and through the forms you see, following contours and such, take your time don't rush concentrate on what your observing. This helps your observational skill and train your hand to better convey the forms your looking at. Hope you haven't heard of this before cause you know, I would suggest this exercise to any one it really helps. Keep going Stine your doing great. Knock that bastard off.

I'm digging the hands, your line quality has gotten better. The way to improve line quality is just to loosen up your whole arm. Sometimes when I draw, and I want it to look perfect, I notice my arm will stiffen up and I start drawing really small strokes and usually they come out crappy, but if I just loosen up and see it from a learning perspective, usuing bigger more fluid strokes, I notice my stuff looks better. Try it out, it really does help the whole hand eye coordination and also time limit. Try it as well with your portraits. Good job!

Skeiff makes some great points on broad strokes and staying loose. He's absolutely right, I need to take the info and loosen up as well. I think this is a very nice portrait. I really like how you simplified the hair but you also chose to shade it in so it reads better. I think you have the right approach, i don't have any more crits its quite simple the more you draw the better you will get. Again, nice portrait can't wait to see what you have for us next.

hey guys, small update...
skeiff - thanks for the tipp. funny how feeling comfortable and drawing good relates to each other, isn't it? i'll definetely try to loose up a bit more when drawing. guess i'm so used to only working with the wrist from my tablet/mouse that i have to "learn" drawing with a pencil again...
ashrumm - thanks! started to have my reference not directly in front of me but more far away so i don't get lost in details. guess that helped a bit. but sometimes doing all the tiny things is great, too...

Hi Stine liking your last few portraits, is the first of Emily umm something Klimts girlfriend? Well your doing well and I guess you already know you need to venture out of your comfort zone a bit more. I guess drwing things you like

Now that's what i'm talking about! The last couple of portraits are looking damn fine. Nice loose lines, proportions looking real good. A good thing to work on are the planes of the face. Whenever you shade you kind of seem to shade whichever direction, but if you think about the planes and which way those planes face, try shading in that direction. The planes of the face are so crucial and I myself have been learning and realizing that as well. Check out how GaBoArTpAgE does it in his first post: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18792
and also check out how Daarken approaches shading in his Life Drawing section:
http://www.daarken.com/Flash2005/main.html
Very very cool techniques. Hoped that helped a bit!

nii - thanks! yup, it's her, althought i don't think the resemblance is very obvious, so i'm really surprised you recognized her. guess it's more the hairdo... :)
skeiff - thanks a ton for these links, had a look at them and i find them very helpful. will study them more later, thanks!
aether - thanks for visiting my small book! :)
okay, having another look at leonardo's "grotesques" i thought it was time to get away from reference for a bit and have a little fun. just testing what i can remember and draw from mind... ended up with some kind of caricatures...
here we go, just a little gimmick:

ham-e - thanks! i guess the colored pencils are a bit softer and i can handle them a little bit better... trying to get some prismacolors now... :)
dile - hey, thanks for stopping by!
cleaned my harddrive today and found this little sketch i made several months ago. my very first attempt in some sort of character design. note that i made this long before getting into drawing again, so i had to go with the humor... just thought i'd post it to show some sort of progress...
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41/stine17/sketchbook/have-you-met-bruce.jpg
right now i just try to step back a bit and think about what i'm gonna do next. did some characters as i liked to push face features as far as possible. alsways wanted to make some sketches for oscar wilde's "the remarkable rocket" with all those little firework-characters. so here we go, first bunch...

That's cool Stine it helps to just draw cartoony stuff now and then. I think we should just do ref anatomy studies once or twice a week or more if so inclined, as Ash suggested before cause frankly I was struggling to keep up with the reff studies. Way to go I'd like to see more from off the top of your head. Till next time :teeth: .
edit: Oh updated just when I posted did'nt see you there Stine wow you read my mind, nice update.

Great studies Stine.
I wish I could draw realistic faces with that quality. It's so hard for me to make the proportions right :S
I agree about one of the comments about the contrast. Though I really like the soft shading (one of my favourite comic artist draws really soft).
Other thing is you could pay a little more attention to your shading lines. You are using them only to make values (in some pieces), and lines can help to create volume, and in hair help to define which kind of hair you are drawing.
Hope that helps :)
Keep the cool studies!

Okay, you got me, i was stalking you :p
Man, youve got some good finger and feet sketches.. wow!
Personal question though.. do you think an artist in the photography section could do well in a drawing/sketching/painting section? Or do you think its a talent that should be given to you from God?

oh, so many replies... thanks a lot! :)
nii - heh, that was synchronal posting...
dile - yeah, i feel more comfortable with the realistic stuff, too. but that's just another reason to practice the cartoony ones...:) glad you're okay. that lamp can surely freak one out...
ham-e - thanks a lot!
joiton - thanks for visiting, man! you're right with my hatching and my lines. need to improve that a lot. trying to show overlapping lines and create volume with that, but it didn't work out the way i wanted it. it's definetely on my agenda. thanks for telling me again! :)
ashrumm - thanks, bud!
claude - hey! nice to see you here and thanks for your comment. as to your question: well, i guess i don't believe in talent that much. more in work, practise, patience and will. and a little ambition can't hurt, either...:) i think you can be talented as hell, but when you don't have the patience to hold on or you don't have the will to start you won't go far. in the end it all comes down to being creative. the rest is only a choice of medium. hmmmm, did that answer your question?!
ivan - thanks! :)
so, i worked a bit on the different characters and gave them some notes t explain the characters. well, it's the first time i'm doing something like that, so it can only get better... hope you like it.

Hi stine, these layouts look great! One issue I have with them is the scale of the drawings in relation to the other elements, basically I think the drawings should be bigger and the column of text narrower. Nice work!
Ashrumm
May 1st, 2006, 12:21 PM
I agree with Ham- E I also thing the drawings should be a bit bigger since they are the focal point of the design. But its awesome to actually write a description of the different personality traits of each character that is something we should all do when designing characters. Great Job.

The direction of your lines (side of pencil tip) suggests you are trying your hand at the hatching rendering technique in a way, good start keep going with that, you've done well to define the mass of that arm. As long as you know what it's supposed to look like, in the end you will have learnt something. Do it again if your not happy or move on. Welcome to the 5th Dungeon ,Level 6 Gladiator: Provocator Stine. Prepare to level up.

just some quick arm studies from the masters to get a general feel for the form and male/female arms. and a very rough 10-minutes-portrait for fun.

Hey (again) Stine! You doing some improvement.. :)
hm, Im just wanna know how many of those arm is based on reference, or
/and knowledge, cause on the very first ones there is just some muscles
everywere.
those who are in the middle seem abit deforemed, and last ones
also dont seem to be based on anything exept imagination, Im sorry if im
wrong..
You improveing , but keep to lifedrawings / references, to get it right first!
then try it differntly!
Keep it up! your doing well! :)
(sorry if I sounds different with what I use to, but I have seen my self that when I got those "Good" & even "Awsome"
then I wont get back to the paper, if someone tell me "Your not so good at that" or "hm, do some more of this"
Im sure getting back to the paper/ software to complete the request :P even if its not 100% I m just giving it
a try to improve, No one wanna get stuck with those cute "good" you want to have those, you know WOW AWSOME, 5 STARS
Comments, but you dont want em cause of that ppl think your art is "cute") You maybe have another thoughts of this,
but thats my opinion, and thats what makes me motivated to improve! :)

Your master study of the portraits are freakin awesome!! Similiar to what Hurricane has said and i'll say it again your portraits are improving speedily. Your arm studies are a bit morphed in a few of them the hands are too small and i can see you're not comfortable yet due to the repeated marks along the edges of them. Keep doing them i want to see more arm studies keep it up. :tihi:
