Hi there
I honestly dont know why i opened this thread, while being surrounded by artworld most gifted and experienced people, but here it goes:
Im Lewis, 17 years old and living in the tiny and grey country of the Netherlands.
I recently signed in to an arteducation. Made some admissionassignments, and now im awaiting the response. When its positive i get invited for a conversation where i show off my portfolio.
And there we come to my main reason to open this thread. I hope u guys can help me improve my portfolio.
So here we go:

Cute dog, draw more of him. In general just do more from life. From what I hear life drawings are what most art schools are interested. Also drawing alot from life is arguably the best way to learn how to draw representationally plus it's alot of fun. So if you want my advice, draw as much as you can from life and use your best stuff in your folio.

Thank you for visiting my SB:)
You work with a wacom? Try to make more exactly lines, use smaller brushes and try to improve your coloration skills. Have a look at some tutorials.
But before: Try to practice anatomy and figures. It's hard to learn and it needs much time but I think you'll get it.
The dog sketches look good, lifedrawing is a great practice:)
Keep it up:D

Pugs! Boogieman is dead on, draw from life. Anything and everything around you. I lived in Holland when I was in junior high and high school and I took a lot of after school lessons in oil painting and life drawing and um, ceramics too. It was a ton of fun.

Tnx for the comments ^^
Boogieman > Tnx, ill definately do some more from life drawings (and some more pugs ;)). Kinda weird u like drawing from life so much, because i prefer drawing from my mind. But i have to admit drawing from life/reference can help a man improve a lot.
Guntrouver > Hey, np, i really loved watching ur sb. Be sure to update it! And yes i use a wacom (graphire 3 or somthing) and ive heard ur crit by some other people aswell, so i will try to change my wacombehaviour :P
Wetterschneider > Especially for you, a selfportrait in this update ;) And btw where do u live now? Im guessing some kind of englishspeaking country, seeing ur sentences.

Yep, I am an American, and I moved to Holland in 1979 and back to the US in 1984. It was a lot of fun, living there, and travelling around Europe. One of the things I like so much about CA is that so many people are from so many countries.

Hi!
I live in the netherlands my self!
Cool sb! The Drawing with a pencil look great but you should work on your digitals a bit more. DO you use a tablet? if not you should ;) It improves most of the guys who can draw with a pencil a lot!

Hey there. Thanks for popping by my sketchbook and please come again if you will. The last sp of yours is definately your best one so far and that is the way you should be going. On yesterdays sp the features seem a bit distorted to me. I'm myself practising proportions, taking measurements and building the construction lines everyday and it's a very slow process and even more slow progress (at least it is for me). I hope you have access to a loomis book 'cause it has helped me a lot. See you again.

So.... i didnt got invited to the arteducation i aplied for. Sad, but true.
Ive not lost my hope, tho. Another arteducation has caught my eye, so we'll see if i can get my hands on that.
This site also gives many hope, its great to see how people get into the artworld in many different ways, so an education is certainly not the only way.
Anyway, worked a bit more on my COWentry

I can already see an improvement, and your dog is so cute! I want to see more of him. Like everyone else said, more life drawing. Try and do a little every day. Draw anything and everything, your hands, your dog, a bowl, an orange on the table, everything. Date your work too, so you can go back and see how much you've improved. Keep going, and thanks for the comments :)

WIP
This one is for a teenchallenge at thunderdome
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64249
Topic: visualise "Death" in an original and creative way
This is Death w/ his almighty hammer. He liberates suffering people from their pain, knocks out the unfair or just bangs someones head for fun. Death hits people with his hammer, like they are some kinda fairatractions. When he hits them hard theyre dead, sometimes tho people survive such a blow and go unconsious, and in other cases people just end up with a terrible headache.

hey there bro....I like what you have going here, you have a bunch of really interesting designs.
My only peice of advice to you right now would be to slow down a little. Right now it look to me at least like your speedig through these possibly, and in the process arn't really getting the planes of the form down solid.
Hehe, that looks like a run on sentance, but it's true. Just take a little more time and make sure that all your angles are worked out. Laying down the planes on forms correctly will really give your images a sense of depth.
P.S. Thanks for commenting in my SB

Hey Lewis.. I keep wanting to call you 'boo' lol. The Eagle Warrior piece really caught my eye, great concept. To push your imaginative work more do studies from ref as well. If your still working on your portfolio try and see it from the 'examiners' point of view. What are they looking for. Often you will find that they are looking for good knowledge of the human form - so if you haven't tried life drawing, you should def give that a go.
Drawing from life will help and look good to - have a go at museum sketching, its very addictive *_*.
You got some great drawings here, if you could get a cleaner line they would look more polished.

Thanks for posting in my sketchbook!
I see some nice things here. What I would suggest in your way of painting, use some more color diversity, like smashing some low-opacity complementary color in the shadows here and there. Also, don't just pick the lighter or darker tone of a color from the light-to-dark color slider. That will make it more intresting and alive.

Hey guys,
My entry to this weeks COW
The breathing birches
These trees may appear like any tree but they arent. The birches feed themselves from birds and other mammals browsing through the forest. When a unlucky bird comes to close to the "killertrees" the birches suddenly come alive and grab their victim.
Because the breathing birches originate from normal birches they dont have eyes or such. Instead they have many leaves and twigs who contain highly sensitive nerves. The nerves can sense small windwaves caused by animals and humans and thus give the trees the exact location of their preys...

that kahjiu monster. mmm looks too much like the balrog from LOTR but I think its great you're able to reflect influence hmmm maybe try breaking up the mass into different parts and assembling without thinking about the finalproduct? sorta like turn it into lego and repositioning legs where heads should be. forget about the detailing or the shading..and think about the final in silhouette..if ye like it you can move onto rendering the creature. mmm well it works for me at least :D
hope it helps and keep drawin!

COW Firestarter
The Firestarter is a far descendant from the family of rats. It feeds itself all day long with the freshest and youngest leafs, twigs and tubers.
One problem remains for the Firestarter tho. Because just like every rat his teeth keep growing. Thus he smoothens his teeth against rocks. However his teeth arent regular teeth, theyre made from flint. So when smoothenening his teeth against rocks it has caused many forestfires.
Many scientists believe the firestarters have flint-teeth for a natural purpose. The fires keep the forest young and alive. From the ashes young trees and twigs arise, the Firestarter's main foodsource.

Eum, nope my name is not realy oma, its Rob. But you have to take a nick, my reallife nickname is mini by the way. (maar dacht dat die al in gebruik was dus pakte een andere rare nickname) (heb ook nog niet besloten waar ik naar de kunstacademie wil, ik woon in limburg, dus moet even kijken. Maastricht zou een goeie moeten zijn.)
I like the clothings. hope to see some girls in that clothes.

Nice sketchbook :)
I like most of your drawings, and you've done a good job colouring them :P
I think that you, like me, should draw more things from life.
A desk, your brother/sister, more of your dog etc.
I'll stop by every now and then to see your progress ;P

thanx for poppin by my book mate.
Good progress mate, these are coming along well. Work on your anatomy some - learning anatomy will also help you draw creatures and inhuman things, and will aide you in improving your technique.
Keep up the good works mate!

Good job for a 17 year old... but you need to draw more from life and copy photographs, anatomy books and so on. It's boring but it's the only way you even have a chance of getting better.
bkdev
August 17th, 2006, 08:11 PM

August 17th, 2006, 09:28 PM
Great,, where are you working?
zie ik duinen op de achtergrond?.. Try to think where the line have to go, they gonna look a loot cleaner, it's said many time to me. and realy it works :).
I like you ideas. you should work them out better. > more shading contrast etc.
but you will get my point, do some studying. like i do. it's realy helping, and you will improve a lot lot faster.
Maar onthoud, het gaat er uiteindelijk alleen maar om dat 'jij' je vermaakt.
blijf posten, hier zul jij nog veel leren. ( ik ook hoor, daar niet van :P. hoe meer hoe beter :D:D:D )

that first one looks cool.
To your SP, normally the middle eye corners are a little lower than the outside corners. the lips normally are in the same line as the pupils, and don't try to do the hole iris between the eye lids. that is all said to me. :) and it helped me out well!
hope to see more off you soon!

Translation:
Weak: Catching trains, lazy, going to bed too late
Strong: Ambition, incredibly handsome, intelligent, cool, tough etc etc
Explenation:
Imagening myself stands for my childly enthusiasm and ambition.
On the line are the goals i want to reach -> trains and good grades

I love seeing peoples sketches from life, I got to try doing some of them some day! Definately seeing improvements, especially with stuff like proportions. Keep concentraiting on those though by training your eyes and such. I find that measuring things out with my pencil really helps at first.
The figures are showing a lot of promise - when doing studies keep in mind negative space and reflective light. Doing good, keep sketching.

damn i still have so much work to scan in, but for now ill leave this COWthingie in my hopelessly unupdated sketchbook
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/7686/cow85silvertoothnl3.jpg
As they hide in the many shadows the rainforests offer, this monkeyspecies is searching for future preys.
When a fat boar, an unknowing deer or for that matter a lost human is passing by the Silvertooth grabs his chance.
In no less then a split-second they jump out their hidingtree and throw themselves upon their prey.
Their secret lies within the special fur and teeth. Since theyre both incredibly white, reflective and shiney, the prey will simply get blinded by the lightintensivity.
Once blinded, the prey stands no chance... This because the Silvertooth, as natives call these kind of monkeys, have another weapon (besides their enormous jaws) to ensure their meal --> Their left "smashingarm".
This arm is held backwords while jumping, but when the struggle on the ground begins this ridiculously strong arm usually turns the tide towards the Silvertooth.

those moleskin pencil drawings are dope, lots of personality in them. overall the life drawings are the strongest of your stuff you have in here technical wise. i think you just need to translate the attention to detail you have in your analog sketches to your digital pieces to make them really shine.

Little story about other assignment for drawing.
We had to make an object that had 5 kinds of material implemented in it.
Some guys on school made beautifull things, but me and some m8 were just chilling till late night with some beer.
Then we broke some wood and bricks. Took the beerbottles, nails and a plastic cup and made this xD
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/8822/follyjn7.jpg
Then we had to draw it in different perspectives, but also as if it was a building or a monster or a robot. Weird assignment xD
But it was for the sake of lighting of different materials.
ANYWAY, i chose some tanklike thing for the robotassignment.

"The Apple Gatherer is an outdoor bogeyman. Sublime, subtle, deceitful and malicious.
He is known to keep company with goblins, kobolds, redcaps and other foul ferries. He is especially fond of children, small dogs, and farm cats.
Seen most frequently in apple orchards, he haunts only during the twilight hours, when he is most likely to catch a farmer's child lingering unawares."

"The gothic angel is a story of Satans most malicious plan to rule the world above hell.
He created a demonic angel and gave him half of his dark powers.
Within days hundreds of heavenly angels were killed. Nothing seemed to match the creatures ancient powers. His axe poured through any shield, his helmet could withhold any blow and the hellish aura that surrounded him drove the weakminded mad.
Hope came when after 600 horrific days the demon began to weaken.
Even though his dark armor was perfect in design, his pale skin was no match for the sun.
Finally at the 666th day since his arrival the Gothic angel fell from the sky."
