View Full Version : Some serious selftutoring going down here (help out with crits)

hey people! i figured it's time to get serious for real with my art so I decided to quit my job at the assembly line in the volvo factory here and go for it (we have something called A-kassa which means I get 80%of my salory from the union, kinda unmoral to take adwantage of to alot of peolpe but I figure since I'm doing something productive with my time it's ok).

Anyhow, I have worked out a schedule to really keep me ambitiour, i'ts as follows..

mon: color theory, color excercises and /or painting nad evening school containing model, painting, life drawing, still life and so on. tue: free work so far. wed: anatomy theory, anatomy studies and life drawing in the evening. Thu: free work in the day and evening school in the evening. fri: perspective theory, perspective excercises and environments. sat: portrait/selfportrait or both, facestudies, heads in general. sun: drawing at my local natural historic muséeum.

i feel I need this to keep me from slacking of.. this is not ment to be a scheduele of military disciplin but more of a pointer and something to keep me at it instead of getting drunk or high with my friends and shit like that.

any pointers about the scheduele are welcome.

well now for the pictures, slap me if I miss updating any day without a good reason. it starts out kinda dull I guess but please have patience there will be more intersting stuff further down.

wait your getting paid by volvo to draw ? hehe.

The life drawings aren't bad at all, remember you should spend more time looking at the figure than your paper.

friday 3/3 perspective theory and excercise: Studied theory two hours or so here, alot of stuff to read - http://handprint.com/HP/WCL/tech10.html

Then I did some studys on cubes inspired by a thread at sijun (i think thats the name of the forum), most of the pictures was gone so kinda hard to understand averything..

the one of the bottom turned out aight I think but the one on the top should have hade vanishing points alot furthar away.. charcoal and 8B pencil:

Tobin: No by my union to look for a new job, heh! thats the immoral part of it. it's for people who get laid of and stuff really kinda like a safety net, but it's my only chance to follow my dreams right now so fuck it, it's only for a couple of months til I start school (hopefully) anyways.

ahh that makes more sense, im in a similar position although im working a part time job pumping petrol... i've basically got all the time in the world to work at it and get it right before i start trying to get money out of it. right now i have enough money for smokes and drink and the odd art supplies shopping spree.. try working for people, even if its cheap and not exactly what you want to be doing, im doing some design work on the side, real tedious stuff, but its a great way to get to know people who could help you later.

yeah would have to be under the table money if I did that, otherwise I would loose the money from my union and make even less..

i commend you for your bravery in leaving your position for study... it looks from your work that your heart is truly in this, and that with some hard work and dedication you will find some work doing what you truly want to. No criticism at this time unfortunately, Just encouragement--> Make every single drawing / painting you do the best one you've ever done, attempt to have flawless craftsmanship andyou'll be in a good place very soon, i promise! Because you are going to be trying to get into some school, i'd highly reccomend trying to keep up with your scanning and presentation aspects of your portfolio, even though, no, that part isn't nearly as fun as making the work itself. If you have to backtrack to get work together when ou need it, it costs you a lot of valuable time... good to have a running archive if you catch my drift

drifts away,
cheers and Bravo!

The work here does show that you are dedicated as guggenmaneuver has mentioned. But in order to get a sense of what characteristic mistakes or areas you might require help with, we might need to see a little more.

What I mean is - there is potentially a style emerging here that is all your own, particularly evident in the group of faces. I think they show an interesting approach to caricature and not neccessarily much to be criticized. Of course if you had a series of portraiture or long poses in figure drawing and we saw definate proportion or structure problems, then maybe crits would come much easier. As these are, the may need a little help with structure and porportion such as how big the ears are and where they are placed - in some caeses too small or placed too low or too high.

At this point, I say do as much life drawing as you can to get yourself back in the swing of things, let yourself loosen up, do lots 1 minute gesturals and ease into the longer poses to add tones, shading and volume

That's it from me, but I will be back to see if there is any true critiquing I can offer. I think this will be a fun thread to visit and see progression.

guggenmaneuver : thanks for your comments.. the thing you say about always aim to make ones best picture ever is a very good point which I never really thought of even though it's vary logical, thanks for that..

mentler: thanks man! I will..

yeticatcher: yeah your absolutaly right, I cant excpect real crits before I have filled the thread a bit more.. Since I will update daily there should be enough to start getting some serious critique in a few weeks or so I guess.. yeah please be back, all critique is very welcome..

now I'm of to the natural historic muséum to draw some dead animals.. hungover and tired but cant let that stop me.. I'll be back with an update later this evening..

Your work is really quite impressive. Would like to see much more from you. Those shading/lighting studies have done wonders to you. Your talent (hard work) shows especially in the shading. Great stuff. Will be coming back once you update.

placeboast: thank you for those encouraging words and please be back..

Sunday 5/3, natural historic(al?) muséum:

Went to the natural historic muséum heavily hungover and with hardly any sleep last night (went home with a gorgeus muse, hah), things were kinda blurry and by the second drawing I felt really sick but at least I got something done and took some insights about values with me..

A rhino i charcole and a little graphite.. was mainly looking for vlues and to get that kinda blocky feeling of the rhinos massive face , plus I'm trying to learn to control charcole, a fairly new medium for me.. would probably have come out more beautiful in only graphite but I learned more this way I think:

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/7229/rhino00ss.jpg

And a pair of eagles, a mother andher kid I guess, in a nest.. Really dissatisfied with this one, the shading turned out pretty bad, should have been more patient and gone softer first to build it up, feathers are really hard I think, especialy when everything was hungover-blurry.. I was pleased with the original linework but not with the finished picture.. I feel I learnt alot from this pic though, I easily get caught up on details and sometimes ruin good drawings by doing that (as in this case).. What I should have done was to only go for the values and skipped trying to get all the feathers in there, and saved some detail for last:

I think you're on to something with the charcoal useage here. The texture patterns on the rhino's snout came out very nice. You may have gotten a little heavy-handed on the birds, but the softness shows along the neck and chest of mama bird and the lower part of the wing on baby. Overall I'd say it turned out quite nicely.

-Yeti

JoeHell
March 5th, 2006, 04:36 PM
yeticatcher: hey! yeah the snout turned out pretty good, maybe should have gone a little further with that, but on the other hand I might have made it worse.. Yeah you're right about the birds, should have kept that softness all over the thing..

well here's a small sketch from tonight, looks like shit now with no shading and boring outlines.. I'm gonna go for the same kinda look as with the bum up there but a bit more serious, so the boring lines are just that way so they will really show through the watercolor.. Kinda like this thing with mixing watercolors and ink..

Apocalypse Rex: Thanks man!

today will be mostly colortheory reading and shopping for colors and some material i need on the day, I think we have model painting at evening school..
The theory I will be reading is Richard Schmids book Alla Prima.. I'm gonna do his color charts, mincandyman recomended the book to me and it's great..
Think I need to do those colorcharts since I'm really new at colors and need to learn to really see colors and learn to mix the right ones before I can really start painting..

monday 6/3, colorstudies: today I have done some reading and been down town to buy colors and some other materials but I'm hoping we will paint at school later today..
Finished the last sketch, did'nt really come out like I had hoped but I'm pretty pleased with it.. Really happy with the way his hand and espacially his knuckles came out..

you're finished portrait styling is excellent... those colors are badass. you're pencil rendering is very good. Just one critique, in the body studies, some of them "look" kinda disproportioned, but maybe the model was just like that. The upper torso with the muscle arms coming out of it, made me think about that. It looks to compacted. That's it for now & keep up the good work!

The model study you posted today is probably my fav piece in here, its really nice. I feel though overall your stetches are lacking some structure. Would be good to see some anatomy sketches from books and what not. Just keep practicing, you have a good start.

Tobin
March 20th, 2006, 06:57 PM
your rendering is great, but as matt said you need to work on structure and anatomy, your noses particularly, you seem to have limited grasp on them... a little more structure would help alot. leveling up both corners of the eyes across the face and such, and blocking out forms more often.

hope that helps

JoeHell
March 21st, 2006, 09:33 AM
Matt Smith: thanks for the crits.. could you develope on that thing about structure? kinda slow when it comes to english, I know what the word means but not exactly what you mean with it, heh! is it composition and things like that you are talking about? or just that I should plan the sketches through more?

tensai: thak you! i'm quite happy with that one..

Tobin: same for you as for Matt, what do you mean with structure? know I sound dumb, hah! but "if you dont ask....."
yeah gonna work more on anatomy, any tips on good books on the subject?
I'll sit down later today and do a load of noses and eyes :)

tuesday 21/3: here's another modelstudie from today, not as good as the last one though.. mostly painted, but did'nt bring my camera so I'll have to upload that later, thursday or so..

When i say structure, i mean drawing in guide lines, making sure the eyes the bottom of nose and the chin and brow-line are all parallel, and then more detail line making sure the corner of the eye closest to the ear is in line with the corner of the eye closet to the ear on the other side of the face and and the same with the inner corners .. building up with simple lines and shapes that act as guidelines.

As for books, I like burne hogarths books, they are very stylized though, i find if learning from books (dissection isn't very popular these days) that using more than one artists works is a great way to learn anatomy. different artists have different methods and the more you learn the more ways you can do something the better.

Your life drawings are great, but when your in the class dont be afraid to attempt the head and do some head studies from life. When i did life drawing its the one thing i regretted not doing in the class.

amarryth: thanks you! glad you liked it enough to loose track of time.. I'm applying to art school at a pretty basic level here in sweden, dont know what the equivalent would be in other countries.. It's 1 or 2 years of painting and other basic stuff.. feel I need to pick alot of that up before I go to higher studies since I've mostly been drawing and learning myself..

wednsday 22/3: started a sketch last night and desided to make something with a more finished look of it, very inspired by rodrigo!s sketchthread but with my own touch as some of you might see, I really like this way of drawing, weaving your sketches together instead of swithing paper and spread them out like with wes9000 and rodrigo! and others do, alot of thanks to them for opening my eyes to that way of sketching, makes it so much more fun:

Very nice work! I've been checking you out for a while, just haven't had time to comment... Mainly because while I know you want crits, I'm not sure that I really have any to offer you. I really try to not just give ass-pats, so here goes...

Looking at your rendered peices (those with shadows and highlights, making the form seem three-dimensional) it seems like the images are still rather flat. The shadows etc. are all in the right places, but don't seem to follow the form of the object. Maybe try changing the direction of your marks to follow the shape of the object you are rendering? Maxtormer and ZebsFree both have really good examples of what I'm talking about... Also Jens is good at this too. You should check them out if you haven't already.

You're doing fantastic work here. I really enjoyed your perspective studies awhile back.
Later.

Loving the light!!!

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/6508/selfportraitkaos6as.jpg

but some of your features look a bit disaligned the lips and jaw do not align
with the nose, and the mouth does not align with the middle line of the jaw
the hand on the first plane looks really nice, but te arm that is atached
to it looks to cartoony and guessed

I love the watercolor color dog as well :^^:

yea really lovely work in here, i like the dog, and that one page you completely filled with graphite.

as for crits, when you're drawing from life you're being really carefull it seems, try taking a pen and without underdrawing or scratchy lines, try to get the figures/people in a fluent motion.. oh i just saw the ones in ink, can't hurt to keep trying it untill you get used to it more :)

You've got a great sense of volume, JoeHell, expecially where it comes down to the figure. If I had any crit, it would be to keep an eye on the perspective and proportion of features on your faces (this latest girl's jawline, for example, seems a bit high for the scale of the rest of her face). Awesome work overall!

Is that a duck with an amaeboid nose condom?! I've heard of them, but didn't think they really existed! How'd you get it to pose for you?

Seriously though, these last couple pics have been a lot of fun! I really that you're not only trying out a variety of media and techniques, but that you're also trying on a bunch of styles.

No real crits at the moment (sorry man, I really do try...), except to agree with Idiomatic about that girls' jaw. It makes her look awfully masculine, because it's so square... also you didn't leave enough room for her chin.

Oh... Here's another one I just thought of. In the picture of the bar scene. Check out the girl holding the drink over her head... I think her fore arm should be longer. Yeah... as I look at it again, that's it. Do you think you shortened it because you were running out of space at the top, and didn't want to just lop off her hand (she would get terribly thirsty if she couldn't hold her glass... though her boob is hanging out, and I'm sure that dude next to her wouldn't mind feeding her a couple of more drinks...)? I do that sometimes too. Anyway, it's something to keep in mind next time.

You're doing some effing awesome work here man! I really enjoy checking it out!

Later.

i've just started working a lot more with ink and water colour also, its a great mix of mediums!

I liked the abstractish piece... , just remember to remember your studies when your working out finished pieces.

This is just very good art.

Not to just ass pat, but i really love the life drawings, very soft, very knowledgable, strokes and shades. i am not the biggest fan of most of the watercolored stuff, but i think thats because it could be every bit as soft and clean as your sketches but your letting the media control your approach to your painting, instead of you grabbing the brush up and telling it who's boss.

there are allways tale tale things with every media that makes it stand out, and letting the paint drip is nice, but im not sure if its anything more then aesthetics.

though i think the last one (watercolor and ink) really is starting to come together.

keep it up man, awesome possum.

ArcoNL: thanks!

Tobin: yeah it's really fun to mix those.. yeah I know, those two were just for the fun of it and to let loose a bit but you're right, should probably have thought about it more..

Megamau_X: thanks mate! yeah guess I should do some watercolor pieces with more controlled colors, the ones I've done here are more like just having a more fun colorish background then just the white of the paper..

tried a portrait from a photo today and it was so fucking boring I almost fell asleep.. It's one thing using it for reference but yeah people ae right, just trying to copy a photo feels really unrewarding, would need alot more work to start looking good but I just cant continue on it.

selfportrait: started on a selfportrait, trying out a technique inspired by MagicMan's mona lisa study, smudging the paper before starting.. used charcole insted of graphite powder to smudge though.. really like the technique so far.. using prismacolors (even though I use some other similar brand, gonna get the real deal soon) with pencil and charcole is alot of fun. really regret going so hard at the ears so early should have left them more diffuse, a lesson for next time since they dont erase well. gonna finish it tomorrow when the light is right again:

Hi there, this is looking really good. Such conifident lines. And I can see that you're getting somewhere, this really inspire me. You're showing us what disciplin is.
I would like to see you interperate more of your studies in your concepts and imaginative art. I'm gonna quote Scott Fisher on this one -"Imagination is a muscle, so flex it!"

Well done sp <> I would not have lightened the background on the shadow side makes the bg look a little unnatural <> look at Rembranbt and other om portraits <> cover the face and you will see the background are generally the same on both sides <> you get the illusion of it being lighter because of the value than it is against <> my opinion of course but this treatment of the background tends to flatten out form.

Like a lot except for that <> this is a very common treatment and some well known portrait artist use it, I think it is because of the optical illusion I have pointed out, it just seems a little gimmicky to me, and I think your self-portrait would be better without.

You will notice in great portraits the use of reflected light on the shadon side of the head which generally comes from below (if the head is lighted from above)
and often will pick-up the bottom edge of the hairline or a hat.

here's a drawing I did today at the nature history muséum.. siamese calves.. really fun to draw freaks of nature like these, gonna draw a couple of siamese human twins they have in a jar up there next time.. I'm really quite happy with this drawing, the photo takes a bit out of it, had really low bat and cant find my charger so I stressed it and the pictures just turned out blue like they can do in daylight, so had to desaturate and lost some of the contrast in the process..
